Mike Beltrandi last week I had to ship a Les Paul with DHL through the whole country.. It were a few sleepless nights since it was only wrapped in lots and lots of bubble foil and put in a box. No case since the buyer did not want to pay for it. It survived, but I was very anxious until it arrived. I got a nice Strat out of the trade so in the end it was worth it!

I grew up on strats and absolutely hated teles. I hated the way they looked and I hated the way they sounded. Now that I'm older I've become enlightened to how cool and versatile a tele actually is. And without trying, tele has become my favorite. I still love strats, but I find I rarely play mine anymore as the feel and sound of the tele is just a better fit for me. Completely unintended and strange, but there it is.

Similar here... I bought a Fender MiM Tele and I can't put it down. My current #1 was an Ibanez Jem and I was a low-rent Vai/Satriani wannabe. But the Tele on clean or crunch is so fun that it has transformed me entirely as a player. (Though for a desert-island guitar I don't think I can choose between a Tele and a Strat... a brutal dilemma)

Same here, but i went a little out of the ordinary with my Strat, got a Tele bridge pickup installed (with a custom pickguard ), a clapton-style midboost circuit and some switching magic that allows me to get something quite similar to a Tele middle position as well as all three pickups at once. Had to drop the tone pots though, so i have a master volume, a mid boost volume and a blend for the brigde pickup. The amount of dynamics i get out of that guitar is insane.
@sparkijones

If that’s the case I’m an outlier too, even though i don’t know what one is! I find the middle great for rhythm sitting nicely in the mix but still clear. With gain it can yield the full spectrum if you pick near the neck or near the bridge - totally different sounds!

The answer to it is to buy both. I had a Strat that I've been playing over a decade. I started to feel like I was a Tele-man and resented the Strat. I looked for the perfect Tele for years and when I finally got it, the Strat became so much better. I was no longer wishing it was a Tele because I had a Tele. The Strat could be a Strat. Turns out I'm not a Tele-man. I play both equally now and they both do different things well.

OK, in my opinion , the tele is like the polygraph test for guitar players. It reflects what you bring to the table. The strat is where I have mostly ended up and, in my opinion, the key to the strat is to not be gentle or shy about hitting it hard. Single coil pickups allow you a type of depth that you can really explore. One of the beauties of both is the pickups you choose and the in-the-room sound and feel you get.

Strat middle pickup is so useful and I've used it for years. Great clean for funk and soul, reggae, etc. and with dirt, not as dark as the neck, not overly bright like the bridge and sits well in the mix. Fantastic video. Thanks My entry: After decades of gigging I found (and used it to my benefit) ; That if you play a strat and you have another player equal in tallent to you, compete with a humbucker or good P90 based guitar, the strat tends to be relegated and disappears somewhat. With a Tele not so. A telecaster can hold its own against any humbucker based guitar. Strats really shine if they are used with other strats or teles.

I love em both but prefer Teles. One thing I prefer about Strats, though, is that they have a more singing lead tone without that extra attack. I find that if I use a higher output single coil in the bridge position of a Strat and attach it to a tone pot, it excuses you from having to make stereotypical Strat noises the whole time (although realistically, when you listen to recordings, it still sounds pretty Stratty a lot of the time). But you can play AC/DC songs on a Tele but not a Strat.

Ergonomics of the Strat are definitely nicer. When I play a Tele, I press my forearm down in a way, that will some times make my right hand almost fall asleep! That comfort extends to normal playing and soloing. I have my Strat bridge flush on the body, but there is still a sponginess when doing bends. I have a Bigsby Tele so there’s also a little give, but there’s a slinkiness to the Strat? My Tele has p-90’s so it’s not a “real” Tele. I have had, and would like to have again, a “Real Tele”, but I think it will be a Frankenstein Parts-caster? I like the idea of comfort cuts. I’ve putting my Strat into Open G, and the sound is very unique...in contrast to using a Tele, which sounds like every other Open G player? I’ve also thought about building a Hard Tail Strat, with a base plate under the Bridge P/U?

Alternated between a Les Paul and Strat for years, but found a sweet seafoam green tele last year and can't believe how much I love it. Really love the simplicity and feel that the pickup selector is superior in that I often hit the strat pickup selector when I get too crazy playing rhythm. The neck and bridge pickups on the tele are superior to the strat pickup sounds, but nothing beats the in between positions on a strat!

I love both, but should point out the Strat was initially supposed to be the new version of the Tele. The Tele we all love is actually a newer version of the Esquire (which had no rhythm pickup or truss rod). Leo Fender was always tinkering. He had the Tele in the hands of some local players, and was getting a lot of feedback about what they wanted to see in the next version. Leo added the tremolo (to compete with Bigsby), he contoured it, added another pickup, added deeper cutouts for higher fret access and realized he had a whole new model. The Stratocaster was a big hit, and it was the flagship Fender instrument. But, as I said, I like both since they are both amazing guitars.

I'll stick to my T-style. For one I don't like trems. And if you Absolutely must have the position 2&4 sounds of a strat, just get a 3pickup tele. You get the best of both worlds. My go to single coil guitar is a 3pup T-STYLE always. Great playing & cool video 👍👍

We shall see 😀 . keep up the great vids, they help to encourage my old hands to keep trying 👍👍

The most general way to put it would be saying a tele is all about the bridge and the strat is all about the neck. Though a 50s, fat maple strat bridge will get tele-ish, even more so if it's hard tail. For me it's the feel of a strat and the, personal thought, that they fair better with a mid boosted pedal whereas a tele into a tweed amp and you're good to go. So for me it's a tele but I'm still searching for a strat I can jibe with

to be fair there is greater diffs in wiring and pickups between the 2 - Strats are 85% 3 pickups + 3 knob with Bridge wired direct with no tone - inc HSS - maybe 15% get the buttons or special switching or HH 3 ways - compare that to all the Tele pickup layouts, combos + switches inc Nashville

Why do people keep saying no one uses the middle pickup? SRV? Hendrix? Clapton? Knopfler? Bonamassa? Sayce? Hello?! Lots of people use the middle pickup, and y'all are missing out if you aren't ;) I think the problem is for some reason not many people know what the middle pickup even sounds like, so when it's on a record they often just think it's a biting neck pickup, or a fat bridge pickup. And that's kinda the beauty of that pickup. There's a whole other set of usable rhythm or lead tones, and most people are just like "nah" lol

Quoting David Gilmour: "I'd always kind of wanted a Gibson Les Paul. We used to be sent various circulars of guitars that were on sale throughout the world. "There was one guitar trader in New Jersey who had the 1955 Les Paul on his list. It was all gold - the back and the sides and the back of the neck, and it looked great. "I bought it and had it sent to LA where we were working on [1979's] 'The Wall' album. Not long after it arrived I used it for the solo on 'Another Brick in the Wall, (Part 2).' "We injected it straight through the desk and onto tape, not through any amplifier at all. I've always loved that guitar." So, no. That's possibly the only audible piece in all of Pink Floyd history where he used a Gibson Les Paul. Not exactly the most suitable bit of guitar work to demo a strat.

So like i say you need both . 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 just my opinion 😋

Put a cheap ceramic pickup, in the neck position on the Telecaster, and you'll get even a more muted jazz tone. Alnico magnets, just by their nature are more scooped sounding, with apparently brighter highs. Use a ceramic mag pickup and you won't have as much of the high end. Also his right hand (the guy playing the Tele) has been trained to play funkier, more aggressively. Because of this his display of a "muted jazz sound" isn't exactly as good a jazz tone as his guitar is capable of. If he were used to playing in a jazz style, he'd be using a lighter touch and the guitar would produce a sound that is jazzier. Also, if he were using a fatter pick, he'd get more jazz tone.

I think it's more true to say that a strat always sounds like a strat whereas a Tele has a less idiosyncratic tone which allows the player to come through more. In other words, strats always seem to sound stratty but teles tend to sound like some dude playing a guitar.

Team tele all the way bro. Both of them are versatile guitars, but I will forever love the tele. A simple, proven, and humble design. Lots of famous guitarists gave it a good look much like the strat, and it proves that you don’t have to complicate things, simple can be just as effective.

A strat is like a keyboard, a tele is like a piano. I currently own a tele, I sold my strat. I guess i have upgraded.
@SurfingSerpent
@SurfingSerpent 4 года назад
Rashid Rani Wow, I did NOT expect this analogy to be so accurate. There definitely is a 3D kind of quality to the tele tone that makes it pop out in a way the strat doesn’t. In the video, they had mentioned that the tele has a certain resonance to it, which is basically caused by the large metal bridge plate and its big contact with the body. I find that when you hit the strings harder, the instrument does naturally compress the sound and make it more nasal, while hitting softer sounds less compressed and more open. Very musical. The strat doesn’t have that resonant contrast when you play at different dynamics. It gets louder and softer, sure, but the strat doesn’t really change the way the harmonics squeeze with harder playing the way the tele does. And all of this is natural to the instrument, because I notice it acoustically.

So the way I look at this dilemma is that the strat is very well rounded, you can play almost every type of music with it but with the Tele its pretty well rounded but its more suited for blues, jazz, country etc. I mean I can add some distortion but it wont be as heavy and will have a bright " sharp attack ". So for me it just means whatever genre I feel like playing is what I'll pick up although if i feel in the mood to play as many styles then go strat yet the tone on the Tele is just phenomenal.

Don't forget that cats like Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead), Jim Root (Slipknot) and John 5 (Marilyn Manson) get huge distortion tones out of Teles. In fact, Jimmy Page used a tele all they way up to Zepplin IV: even the "Stairway to Heaven" Solo was a Telecaster ;)

Telecasters are much more versatile guitars. Better for recording, cuts better, better for chords, thicker, can play jazz with, blues, punk, rock, even metal etc... However, strat has that sweet spot that no guitar in the world could ever touch, not even tele. That one thing that's bigger than life.
