The rivalry between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla is legendary. It’s the classic tale of genius versus genius, a tale about how the crossroads of art and commerce can lead to riches beyond your wildest dreams or financial ruin. But that’s an oversimplification. These guys were more than yesteryear’s version of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. In truth, both men were technological visionaries and savvy businessmen, but in completely different ways. One was a man who invented and the other was a man who perfected.
So, whereas Nikola Tesla envisioned a future where humans could video call with devices in their pockets, Thomas Edison realized the inventions of others, like a prototype of Silicon Valley. In time, Edison would live on as a synonym for American engineering and entrepreneurism. Tesla, thought, would die penniless living in a hotel, slowly going mad and obsessed with feeding the pigeons. But together they changed the world. And they did it by doing things that anyone could do.
It’s time to learn How History Works as we explore ‘The Business Dos and Don’ts of Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla’.
Lesson number. Nurture your talents.
On July 10th, 1856 in what is now modern-day-Croatia, a woman was giving birth during a thunderstorm. The midwife remarked that this dramatic fallacy proved the baby would be a child of darkness. “No”, the mother replied, “he will be a child of light”. She was right. The child would grow up to be a pioneer in electrical lighting: Nikola Tesla.
It’s a good thing that his parents did not discourage him from following his destiny. They did not encourage him to take a laboring job or brush off his interest in scientific experimentation. Everyone knows how much parents worry about ensuring their children have a stable life. Yet far too many people never get to display their talents because their wings are clipped before they leave the nest.

Ya know, for all their battling over AC & DC, both are incredibly important today and the video doesn't seem to understand that. Yes A/C is important for long-range transportation at high voltage -- our modern power grid as imagined could not function well or at all if not for AC. However, while some large appliances use A/C, D/C is used by nearly every device like your phone, computer, TV, etc. If it's not a permanent appliance, and sometimes even if it is, usually it's DC (with a few exceptions like fans). The device you watched this on is DC. If it uses a dongle to plug into the wall, or has a power brick inside of it, chances are it's converting AC -> DC. We needed BOTH Tesla and Edison, and both AC and DC power, to make the modern world so effective.

Good video, always a good story to tell. Painting either as good or bad is short sighted. Both had shortcomings and whilst Edison was certainly less tasteful in his actions there was some good in him.

Tesla was not Edison's rival. Westinghouse was. Tesla was one of Westinghouse's developers, along with a number of others. Edison and Tesla were on friendly terms, through their life. Meeting for lunch, writing letters to each other, and Tesla was even a guest at Edison’s daughters wedding. So much of this dislike nonsense is just that, nonsense. But everyone could see with Tesla, he was smart, but really was not able to follow through on many things. Most of his inventions were only theoretical, but rarely made to a practical finished state.

Thomas Edison was a ruthless businessman who was willing to do anything to protect his interests. Nikola Tesla was a brilliant inventor, and Eddie was afraid that Tesla's AC electricity would put his DC electricity business out of business. So Edison stole Tesla's work, claimed it as his own, and used his influence to discredit Tesla. Edison's campaign against AC electricity was a success. He convinced the public that AC was dangerous, and he even staged public demonstrations in which he electrocuted animals with AC current. This helped to create a fear of AC electricity, which benefited Edison's DC business. Tesla was never able to achieve the same level of success as Edison. Tesla was a scientistist and inventor, he never had the ruthless businessman mentality of Edison. He was often broke and he died in poverty alone in a dingy small apartment. Edison and his thugs stole the last of Tesla's work when he died, it was not just a business decision, but a deliberate attempt to suppress Tesla's revolutionary ideas. Tesla was working on a number of technologies that could have revolutionized the world, such as free energy and wireless communication. Edison knew that these technologies would threaten his own business interests, so he set out to discredit/character assassintate Tesla and suppress his work. Edison was a businessman first and foremost, his invention were often bought or stolen and slapped with his name on it.

I hate that Edison bastard with passion. Tesla's story is always a sad reminder of reality.
@jfs78
@jfs78 3 месяца назад
This is incorrect. Study Edison's papers. Then look and see if he invented things. Like Tesla, he borrowed ideas and improved them. Tesla did not invent AC, nor did Edison invent DC. There were AC Arc systems lighting NYC before Edison. But people were being killed by the AC. This is the reason Edison went with DC. It was a safety issue. Flawed, yes it was. Stanley's AC system developed for Westinghouse was better than Edison's DC system. Tesla was an important part of the Westinghouse team. But the battle was never Tesla vs Edison. It was Westinghouse vs Edison. Read some primary sources. What is on the internet is frighteningly flawed.

Go take a look at Kathy Loves Physics & History, Tesla wasn't the amazing genius inventor counterpart to Edison and Westinghouse didn't take advantage of Westinghouse and the three phase induction motor was essentially invented by Mikhail Dolivo-Dobrovolsky.

You know, as a kid i tended to view Edison with tepid respect qnd Telsa with gkowing adoration byt after this video, i have come t o respect Edison way more. Edison and Telsa were both genuises but Edison had better social and pragmatic skills and more foresight and all this hel d him and led to many improvements in technology. Telsa was a great innovator but it takes more to change the world and to be successful.

Edision was certainly a terrible person. Edit: Okay both of them were terrible person. Here's something that Tesla said I just read in wikipedia : "..man's new sense of pity began to interfere with the ruthless workings of nature. *The only method compatible with our notions of civilization and the race is to prevent the breeding of the unfit by sterilization and the deliberate guidance of the mating instinct* ... The trend of opinion among eugenists is that we must make marriage more difficult. Certainly no one who is not a desirable parent should be permitted to produce progeny. A century from now it will no more occur to a normal person to mate with a person eugenically unfit than to marry a habitual criminal".
