Why The 2021 African Cup of Nations Is So Controversial

Cameroon have waited almost 50 years to host the Africa Cup of Nations, despite having played in more World Cups than any other African national team, but now that they're finally hosting the tournament, not everyone is happy.
Cameroon's AFCON has twice been postponed, amidst allegations of corruption, a separatist inspired civil war, and a much-maligned pandemic response.
In this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at each of those issues, the presidency of Paul Biya, and whether the 2021 AFCON should even be going ahead at all.

It's really sad and heart breaking to see after so many years many Africa countries are still corrupt and backwards, most of the times it just feel like some presidents and other high political personnel are just there to eat money and not leave the post vacant, because they almost never change anything for the good, some make life worse than it was b4 they came. I've never been to Cameroon (I'm from ur North Western neighboring country🇳🇬) so I don't know how things are there, but even over here things get as de be

@@sorryhackeryouloose7072 I hope you didn’t close your ears at the part where he said B*** is a cold bloody oppressive leader. But we tried, we refused corruption, some even tried to start revolutions, but what are you gonna do ? The police is corrupt at even level, even at the level of simple patrol officer raqueteering the population. The government is corrupt at every level. The justice system is a joke that failed time and time again. Essentially the guy who wins the case is the highest bidder. The educative system is a joke. For every ten places accepted in competitive exams 8 are corrupted and the cycle restarts. Even teachers are corrupted, regularly selling marks for money or sex. You may try to resist it, but you can’t go very far without being stopped because of it. And you can’t even start a revolution because the country is sooo divided( by tribes, religion and even language). The country is essentially divided by the tribes in it, and whenever one of them says enough is enough, the others just stay in the corner and say « It is their problem », making it easy for the army to essentially kill the resistance. Today Cameroon is a shame, and the country has become so poor, retarded and divided that people just accepted « surfacturation » as a fact of life.

I'd love to see a video of how John Delaney ruined Irish football, and how he basically dropped all FAI funding of grassroots and what he called 'The Problem Child', League of Ireland football. His corruption would make Biya and other African dictators blush. He would be prosecuted in any other European country but he has connections within Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, the two parties that have ruled Ireland since independence (very similar parties ideology-wise, crony capitalism). A video exposing this to the world would be amazing since it is what many European viewers attribute to dictatorships in the developing world but is really happening on their doorstep. Their have been some success stories in the LOI in spite of this corruption and mismanagement of the league (one example of mismanagement being a rumour that the FAI vetoed a Sky Sports TV deal that would've been very lucrative for the clubs in favour of RTE), like Shamrock Rovers' Europa League run in 2011, beating Partizan away to reach the group stages, and Stephen Kenny taking Dundalk from relegation (saved by Monaghan United folding) to narrowly missing out on the Europa League knockout stages in 2016/17. He is now, against all odds, Ireland manager and doing very well. The FAI has had a change of governance but some of Delaney's cronies are still there slowing down change. The LOI has been resilient and come through a dark patch even stronger although some scandals remain (proposed sale of Tolka Park, home of Shelbourne, for housing and having them move in with their arch rivals Bohemian FC in Dalymount). An international audience needs to hear about this.

@@Micfri300 I get what you mean, it does have many benefits like you've mentioned, I just get a bad feeling about it personally. It's sounds daft, but if we did it once, how long before it's always held in Europe? And the other international tournaments too, it'd feel wrong to deny the people of those nations their football tournament. Just postpone it longer and go ahead when things are safe, it might force some of these nations to treat the situation a little more seriously.

Great video as ever Alfie. Another thing about African countries and colonialism is that the modern day African countries’ borders don’t actually make any sense, because historically Africa has tended to have regions run by tribes, often different and hostile to one another. It wasn’t until the British, French etc rocked up and decided that ‘this land is now Cameroon, Nigeria, etc’ - introducing the hitherto alien concept of nation states to Africa - that these disparate tribes were suddenly part of the same political jurisdiction. It’s one reason why a lot of African countries have had civil war and why a lot of these countries struggle to function coherently.

It was a light hearted comment highlighting that he's the only one to be wearing a helmet. That's not to say that he should have to fork out on 8 helmets - just that he's wearing one at all.
