What I find so interesting about Rise from the Ashes as a case is that, while it is set between games, you can *really* tell that the writers for it were way more experienced at writing cases. You can do this just by comparing it to the other cases in the first game. It's not that those cases were bad or anything, but over the years of writing the trilogy, you can really tell that they honed their craft. Rise from the Ashes is the first 3-day trial that actually feels like it *needs* to be a 3-day trial. After the first game, the writers didn't make any other three-day trials. This is because the 3rd investigation day tended to be rather perfunctory. By that point, you know who the killer is and probably have a good idea of how to prove it, so the only thing you're doing is filling in a few blanks. RftA avoids this problem cleverly. Because it's not 1 3-day trial; it's *three* one-day trials. The first trial is the trial of what happened in the parking lot. The second day is what happened in the evidence room. And the third day is what *really* happened in SL-9. It's extremely clever and engaging, as you're frequently investigating new areas and crime scenes. But ultimately, the game ties them all together at the end. You can also tell that the writers of RftA struggled a bit with not having the Magatama as a mechanic. As a game design tool, Magatama interactions were used to structure your discussions and investigations. When you found someone with a lock that couldn't be broken, the game was able to prompt you as to where you might need to investigate further. This replaced some of the fetch quests in the first game, and it was a very welcome mechanic. But RftA didn't have that mechanic. So the third investigation day involves a lot of lengthy conversations and exposition dumps that are important and essential, but they don't involve much interaction. It's just people talking at you until they run out of dialog. It works, but it feels... off. And you can really tell the developers wanted that final conversation with Lana to be a Magatama thing very badly.
@@Lucario1121 They could have implemented the *mechanic*, but it would conflict with the plot, since Rise from the Ashes is set before all of the cases in the second game.
@@Lucario1121Technically they could do it, but it would cause a really glaring contradiction with the story as its not until the 2nd game, Justice for all, that Wright receives the magtama and knowledge on how to use it.
Even Capcom themselves were surprised that this series took off in the West. They had to make like four more shipments worth of copies for the first one. I think the reason why AA and Danganronpa proved popular is that, unlike most visual novels, they have actual gameplay elements to them.
While that may contribute, I myself love these games primarily for the story and characters. I don't know if the presence of gameplay elements is really the main factor to their success.
This series is what really got me into visual novels. I wouldn’t have found games like ghost trick or danganronpa back in 2012 if it wasn’t for Ace attorney. I love this series to death and it is to this day super special to me Edit: also yes I’d absolutely love more ace attorney content
He just like me fr fr Took me sometime to get used to reading (i was a dumb kid who didn't think reading was important for a game) Now im mostly into visual novels over anything else lol
this series ruined visual novel for me. crazy animations on 2d portrait and able to move around the world is such a game changer for immersion. i know tokimeki memorial does similar things but i want to know more visual novel that are at least this animated .
I know this is a lot to ask, but if Ace Attorney returns, I really hope that it sorta strays away from the entire story of the first 6 games and starts anew. Furthermore, I want it to be created with a trilogy already planned out, that way events from the first game can be more cleverly foreshadowing the events of the subsequent games. Maybe themes and symbols can carry over. I dunno. Just an idea
@@TwilightFlower9 This is actually wrong; and in fact, the opposite happened: The Great Ace Attorney was meant to only be one game, but the story got large enough during the planning stages that it was split into two
I've thought about a now-adult Pearl Fey becoming either an attorney or investigator, while continuing her spirit-medium training. At the same time, I kinda want an Ace Attorney game where the defense isn't so reliant on the supernatural.
@@afterdinnercreations936GAA might be for you. There’s a few moments of Herlock Sholmes creating obviously unrealistic inventions but that’s mostly it.
@@questionmarkquestionmarkques Postgame.. in a visual novel. It’s yeah, I can see it, Turnabout Time Traveler from AA6 feels like that to me as well. For Rise it’s literally that it wasn’t part of the initial release, so in a way it’s a standalone case where the scope is designed for a final case.
I first played through the original trilogy when my dad (a lawyer) was terminally ill with cancer. Even though it's not directly related to the game itself, I'll always hold very fond memories of it just because it reminds me so much of him.
1 more point for the HD version is that they have the quality of life feature of having the magnifying glass have a check mark after you check the location that was added in the 5th game That's a great quality of life feature in my opinion at the other point towards the version
You mentioned that you haven't played Chronicles early in the video but I honestly think that game is just as investing and impactful as the trilogy, possibly even better. If you're ever thinking of trying that game in the future, I definitely recommend it. I'd love to see you do a video on it if you ever decide to make one
I'm a massive simp for Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations, but I do have to agree with you: Chronicles, especially the second game, is damn near perfection. The first one's really slow, but it's all necessary setup for what comes in the second game and the payoffs in Great Ace Attorney 2 match the impact of AA3, imo.
Oh yeah, plus it feels like a love letter to the ace attorney series with the way it plays on your expectations and experience from the series and subverts them. They’re both my favourite games in the series for a reason
This gets the Apollo Justisn't seal of approval Seriously though, you did an amazing job with this one. If you have played the Great Ace Attorney Chronicles and plan to make a video for it, I'd love to see it
Glad you decided to cover this series. It is one of my favourites and despite being one of the most popular visual novels I would say that this series STILL doesn't get enough appreciation. If you haven't then i recommend checking out the great ace attorney games and also a video on the investigation games(Investigation 2 is a fu*king masterpiece)and the appollo justice trilogy as it is coming soon would be dope.
@@Exlayer-pk8hyHmm I think they are underapreciated, it had a lot of fun cases and many new characters that were really enjoyable. They aren't the best (especially Apollo justice) but I still hold dual destinies and spirit of justice higher then the first game.
Justice For All´s finale is to this day my favorite case. It just had everything I loved in the series. For Trials and Tribulations, I can see why it is so beloved, but remember hating the ending, making Godot look like an idiot for having Misty Fey die. I just thought that was the most avoidable death ever as a kid.
Well, it IS an avoidable death, but that’s an intentional bit of writing. Godot’s entire plan was enacted not just out of a selfless desire to protect Maya, but out of a misguided attempt to escape his self-loathing by making up for what he perceived as a failure on his part to protect Mia. Godot isn’t an idiot, he’s a man with a savior complex processing his grief in an unhealthy manner. He himself admits that he should’ve handled things better and gotten help from someone else like Phoenix, instead of trying to be the hero and solving everything by himself. Misty’s death WAS completely pointless in the end, happening due to Godot’s actions as a tragic villain, and that intentionally adds to the tragedy of the entire case.
@@thunderphoenix256 Nicely said. What bothers me is that Godot didn´t even consider simply talking to Pearl, instead going right away with the convoluted plan of forcing Misty out of hiding, trying to distract Pearl and when that failed have Misty channel Dahlia herself. Simply telling Pearl "please be nice and don´t channel this one murderous psychopath for Maya´s sake" might have been worth a try. I know she was a child and under instructions from her mother to do so, but I also remember her being smart and very loyal to Maya, so it was always jarring to me that an option of just explaining the situation to her was never presented in the story. It made Pearl look less like a sentient being and more like a ticking timebomb. Now that I think of it, I actually don´t remember how stabbing Misty even solved the situation. Sure, it was to save Mays, but wasn´t Dahlia then just set free to be channeled by someone else? Couldn´t the grown man just apprehend and incapacitate this vengeful university student? What also bothers me is that Godot then tried to hide this act and not take responsibility for the outcome of his plan right away, all in some sick pursuit of testing Wright.
I love ace attorney. It’s one of the few visual novels that are genuinely enjoyable to almost anyone. I almost exclusively play platformers but I fell in love with this trilogy the moment I started the first case!
Would love to see more Ace Attorney, was a really fresh change of pace and an in-depth retrospective of the second trilogy, Great Ace Attorney games, or Investigations duology would be really interesting videos, I think.
I’d love to see more videos on the other games in the series! Investigations, the Apollo Justice Trilogy and The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles would work great as videos like this and I’d be super into hearing what you thought of them!
Awesome to see coverage of one of my favorite gaming trilogies from one of my favorite channels. Funny enough you pointed out the issues with how the legal system works in the series when it's legit based on how the Japanese legal system does indeed work (to an extent). Yep the odds are severely stacked against defense attorneys, the prosecution works with the police investigation, and a guilty verdict is more likely than not. It's extremely common for Japanese prosecutors to have a perfect or near perfect record. The series was partially meant to be a criticism of how messed up the justice system is over there.
I saw a bunch of comments like this, and I was already playing it at the time, and I just… did not agree. But that was before I finished it. After the final credits rolled, I understood. It’s definitely a slow burn, but it’s SO DAMN GOOD.
@@ktshipman21 Once you understand how every little detail in the games link together to form this one massive picture it suddenly clicks that this is the best narrative in the series.
When I finished the video I told myself "Oh man, I can't believe I slept on J's review of the Ace Attorney trilogy, I have to see all of his videos on the franchise", then I realised this was uploaded yesterday. I need more of this, and I am curious as to what is your opinion on the second trilogy, given how polarising they are in the community.
It's actually sort of a hybrid of a visual novel and a point and click adventure, two highly underrated genres of gaming. Love the series, played every game sans PLvsPW (but I'll get to it eventually).
man this trilogy have a special place i my heart it came with my used 3ds and i didnt really care about it at first but 3 months later my curiosity got the best out of me well lets just say that over the next month i binged the entire, staying up all night just to progress a little further, the story had me that hooked
Hold IT! You definitely need to continue with this! I remember my first time playing Ace Attorney. My relatives keep looking at me in the sofa when I scream objection to the DS mic. (didnt know there was a button for that lol)
Rise from the Ashes made the blue badger theme a fight or flight response for me lmao In all seriousness, Farewell my Turnabout is genuinely my favorite case in the entire series, even somehow beating Bridge to the Turnabout
I love this series but as a visual novel fan and RU-vidr... Ace Attorney are NOT visual novels. Too much gameplay which is likely why it reaches a much wider audience.
Seriously between This and Ghost Trick Takumi-san is a Great Storyteller and a trailblazer for playable visual novel awareness to the mainstream also thanks to the DS and 3DS now almost all on Steam with the Apollo Justice Trilogy on the way Thank You Capcom for giving him the chance on this entirely unique set of IPs and let them come to the US I would love to see the story of Takumi-san's pitch of the AA series to Capcom btw Dalia is The Ultimate THOT or at least up there with one of the most manipulative women in gaming and Gumshoe and Gadot both will always be BASED
I played JFA first, since I borrowed it from a friend who was adamant about me experiencing these games, and I was absolutely hooked from the Forgotten Turnabout. I needed to play the other two games immediately afterwards so I went out and bought them with my own money as a sophomore in high school. I don't regret it for a second. I really can't get into The Great Ace Attorney (the first two cases of the first one drag on so damn long that I got bored halfway through case 2 and didn't pick it back up), but these three games will always be at the top of my favorites list, with JFA being my favorite since it was the first one I experienced. That being said, I'd love to see you do more videos like this! And if you enjoy Ace Attorney, you might also enjoy another Shu Takumi game, Ghost Trick, that also recently got a re-release on Steam!
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles really only picks up the pace by the 2nd game, but man was all that wait in the first game worth it in the end! (For me at least)
One of my favorite series. I played all 6 main games, ace attorney investigations and phoenix wright vs professr layton. I still hope that some day, ace attorney investigations 2 will be officially released outside of Japan. As for the main series, the first and fifth game are my favorite.
Also, have you seen the anime series of Ace Attorney? It’s pretty good although it has its problems (rushed cases occasionally, stiff animation in season 1, etc)
I absolutely loved Season 2. Don’t really remember Season 1 much other than thinking it was alright. The game was still better than Season 2, but I still think they did a great job with it when I saw it. I especially thought the Dub voice for Godot was fantastic. I now read all his dialogue in that voice.
@@JsReviewsAlright, glad you enjoyed it! Godots English Dub does sound pretty good lol, though so do a lot of the dubs in my opinion. The English Dub does a good job of using voices that fit the characters
Fantastic video! I would love to see one on the other games. My personal favorites are the Apollo Justice series. Dual Destinies especially is quite good.
Fantastic video as always! One of the rhings that makes AA so great is how it mixes extreme goofiness with serious drama perfectly, which is something I believe it's very difficult to do. I thought the same about Godot not being as agressive as Edgeworh and Franziska, but I thing it's because despite his grudge with Phoenix, he doesn't cheat with fake evidence or tampering his witness testimonies. Btw, I love Big Top Turnabout (with the exception of the minor-thing creepiness, of course)
It fills my heart with joy whenever I see a video praising Ace Attorney pop up in my feed, the fact people are still talking about it 20 years later is awesome! I got into it about a year ago, so I'm glad the fandom is still alive and kicking :D
As someone who could only play JFA first and couldn't touch any other AA games until muuuuch later, I haven't seen a lot of problems with Turnabout Big Top. Sure, I could tell it was filler, and back then I wasn't too bothered in checking people's ages, I've never ticked about Regina's age, and as you mentionned, Phoenix never commented on that. But I didn't find this case to be "bad" by any means - The last two cases introduced me to how goofy and un-serious the characters were that, when I arrived at the circus, I wasn't surprised they tuned it up to 11... or maybe I was just that oblivious to the side gags. Farewell, My Turnabout gave me a lot of trouble. I could tell something was wrong when I had to corner Andrews. I usually took pleasure in finding contradictions, but this time, what rewarded me for my logic was a breakdown. The kind of breakdown I've done a lot as a kid when I was blamed for something I didn't do. That was the moment I realized "Oh shit. This game got too serious too fast." That said, catching Engarde was cathartic, especially with the cold line Edgeworth gave him after I pleaded "Not Guilty". On a side note, if you were playing with an "Infinite Health" cheat, these 100% penalities will still give you a Game Over, since there is no redirection to the question you just failed.
When I won a 3DS from IGN (At a launch party) my catalogue in the years thereafter was 90% DS games, as I'd heard the console highly spoken about for its entire lifetime. I admit that I wasn't using the 3DS to anywhere NEAR its full potential, but the Phoenix Wright games were some of the first I picked up.
Ace Attorney was a key part to me discovering Ghost Trick. Had I not watched the best part of the game (the witness and lawyer breakdowns), I wouldn't have notified the algorithm to show me more similar videos, and as a result, I never would've encountered Ghost Trick. Also of note, there's a spinoff series that focuses on Edgeworth! It was only released in Japan, though, IIRC, so you'll have to find fan-localized versons. I think. Anyways, I highly recommend covering the rest of the games in the series, as well as Ghost Trick if you haven't done so already!
I would argue there are only one other series of games that matches the original trilogy in this franchise, and that's the Great Ace Attourney, i would say that Duology is as brilliant as the original, and it's clear that they were meant to be one whole game instead of 2 games divided on 2.
Thank you so much for perfectly summing up what makes this series such a great experience, I hope you cover the Apollo Justice trilogy and the Ace Attorney investigations duology in the future. FYI, The AAI games focus on Edgeworth except his role is more like a detective investigating the crime, so don't expect any trials, but you still interrogate a lot of witnesses, including the true culprit of every case, which pretty similar to the trial sections of classic AA, and investigation sections, instead of being point and click, now have you moving Edgeworth and his partner around the crime scene and inspecting every suspicious nook and cranny. The 2nd AAI game is Japan exclusive tho, so you would have to play the pretty faithful fan translation instead But the AAI duology is definitely worth it IMO, Id really like to hear your thoughts on it.
It’s tongue in cheek stuff to cover their Butz so nobody raises an Objection to them. When Dangan V3 made an in-universe audience so as to not call out their actual audience so said an interview was a similar deal. AA is a very appreciable world in its own way with a lot of troublemakers to uncover.
I would love if you covered Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright, since this game doesn't get enough appreciatation. While not my favourite from both series, it does have some of my favourite AA moments in it.
4:41 The reason to why they eager to testify, it's a Japanese one, you see in Japan, if you are call to court to testify and refuse it's seen almost as bad as a crime, so seeing as this are Japanese games, they are more written with this in mind, as such the reason to why they are eager it's to not call attention. Even more, if they have positive image, they would think they have more edge because of how the Japanese system works (At less at the time, i don't know if this has changed)
I Discovered the Ace Attorney series in 2021, and after playing the Trilogy, the TGAA Duology and seeing a LP of the rest of the series, I have to say, I love this series and everything that Shu Takumi does, this video was great on showing how special thoses games are, thank you for making this video. Also, you should definitely play The Great Ace Attorney Duology, their are one of the best if not the best games in the Ace Attorney Series, also a little off but I have to say, Ghost Trick is pretty good as well, I really recommend checking it out if you like Ace Attorney.
I still can't believe Von Karma left the bullet in. Like I get the reason, but he's a shady mf. He has to know a guy who knows a guy who knows a backalley doctor who won't ask questions. I guess he must be super paranoid. And wouldn't issues arrise from lead poisoning? And back to with a bullet hole after one recovery day? Its fiction but still fun to think about
Small mistake: you said that doing too many mistakes during psyche-lock segments can lead to a game over. That is not true, as losing all your "health" during those segments merely boots you out of the sequence and you can just start over from the beginning of the psyche-lock segment. All the old locks need to be done again, but since you know the answers it's just filling them in again.
A enjoyer of Turnabout Big Top. Ok with the Amnesia Plotline of Forgotten Turnabout. *_I am suing you for Identity Fraud! I thought I was the only one!_*
I purchased the physical version for the switch really enjoying 1 so far one of the few games I played that when I make a mistake a feel dumb but still enjoying it
One thing I noticed for the first time thanks to the crisp HD backgrounds was that during Rise from the Ashes, Gumshoe had a picture of Maggey Byrde in his locker.
Please, for the love of God, do the rest of the Ace Attorney series! I'd love to watch your videos on them! Ace Attorney is my favorite series of all time, so any content is great content in my opinion, and yours was fantastic! :D
Awesome that you covered the full trilogy like this. Would love to see your thoughts on the others. I find myself going back and forth on how much I enjoy them.
In terms of the anime adaptation, my personal interpretation is that while the anime is definitely not an equal replacement for the games, I think it's great at depicting the smaller things you think of like the backstories of Phoenix, Edgeworth, and Larry. And in terms of what to definitely watch from this anime, watch the Turnabout Big Top episodes as it's the one case where I'd say the anime version is far more superior than the game version. And the anime even has it's own original case called Northward Turnabout Express and it's a classic train murder mystery. Can't go wrong with a classic.
I'm guessing why so many people turned against Turnabout Big Top is that the localization team didn't adjust Regina's age to a legal marriage age, which IIRC would have zero impact in the case overall. Her character being a sheltered happy-go-lucky girl would still make sense even if she's aged up to let's say, 20. Yes, 16 is the legal marriage age for women in Japan, I'm not here to argue for or against that fact but this is an issue of cultural difference and players enforcing their ideals on a game. It's somewhat comparable to a previously mentioned example as to why Franziska can crack her whip inside the courtroom as she wishes, because within the game it makes sense. The game originally was set in Japan, where Regina would pass as a valid marriage candidate (although being the bare minimum age is still creepy but not outright criminal). When the game is localized and the setting is retconned to take place in L.A., they should adjust her age for the case to make sense, much like keeping Adriana Andrews' name androgynous to fit the case.
While I don't play visual novels, this was an interesting video J. Didn't think you'd cover something like this. I've heard about Ace Attorney, but I didn't know the main games were this good, based on how you described them. They got my respect now. Hey, do you think you can cover a series from Bandai Namco sometime?
"Those might be some of the longest titles in gaming history, but still" Excuse you? *Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth By Sleep: A Fragmentary Passage* would like to make and manage phone calls
I really hate Trials and Tribulations simply because of Godot. Everything about the game is fantastic but Godot just drags the whole game down with his misplaced hatred of and blaming Phoenix for Mia's death.
Rise from the Ashes was placed simply to make a fun case that uses the DS's features. That's why it's so long, because if the case wasn't hefty and complex, something worth your while, then why even buy the DS version if you played the GBA original?
