Why The Apple Logo Used To Be Rainbow

Apple Explained

Back in 1977, Apple changed their logo from this line drawing of Issac newton, to one that looks a bit more familiar. But the most striking part of this modernized logo are the rainbow stripes. Why did Apple, a company known for their minimal design, add so much visual complexity to their logo?
Well, the story behind the stripes began with Ron Janoff. A graphic designer who worked at Regis McKenna’s marketing agency.

The original logo, while a complex line drawing, is essentially black, a single color. While full color presses are common today, back then, printers charged for each color ink. Black was the main color used for printing and it was the standard. If you wanted other colors, not only did you pay for the ink, but to clean the press of the color after it was used. The same is true for injection molding. Thus, despite the visual complexity of the original logo, it would have been simple and easy to print.

#1, Apple was NOT known for minimalism until the late 1990s. #2, the Apple logo did not stand synonymous with the word Apple until more than 20 years had passed. Prior to that, the name Apple Computer was always written in full next to or near the Apple logo form. #3, the solid black Apple logo was not the direct iteration after the rainbow version. There were numerous iterations in between with all kinds of shading and effects. The colors were there because the original Apple ][ was one of the first color computers. The 6 colors shown were the same 6 colors the computer could display and it was a big selling point at the time.

The original Apple I was $666.66 back in 1977. The same money in constant dollars is about $3,259.33. That amount today will buy two fully-loaded 24" iMacs or the top-of-the-line 16" MacBook Pro. I think Apple started at the top and never left it.

@@parlor3115 Apple sort of abandoned their dedication to clarity and simplicity when they banished skeumorphic design (Controls that emulated real world things like buttons, sliders, etc.) for a minimalist look with no clear path for their designers or third-party developers. How were the software developers supposed to show the user interface? If most things on the screen were textual, what was the cue to the user as to what part was merely displayed and what text you could touch and acted as a button? Apple was never clear, software developers were left to make their own choices and the result is apps that vary widely in the UI experience. when text or numbers serve as a button in some cases they change from one color to another, in other cases it is underscored, in other cases it disappears and is replaced by something else. iPhone apps are all over the place; with some you tap an on screen target, with others you double tamp, with others you swipe, with others you press and hold. Apple has purged photo realistic icons in favor of a Soviet style sameness but in the absence of these clearer iconography confusion is the rule, not order.; there are only so many icons that can be designed around circles, squares, triangles and silhouettes. Apple abandoned it’s human interface standards. Additionally, Apple went from supremely usable to boutique: it is no longer the device that “just works“, it just works if you buy enough adapters and dongles. It is no longer “the device for the rest of us“, it is the device for the most affluent. Granted, there is economy in buying an Apple product at a premium price and using it until the wheels fall off. But the upfront price isn’t cheap.

NBC's logo is still to this day a peacock for the same reason, they were the first with the most color shows in their primetime lineup (vertical integration - NBC was owned by RCA at the time so they pushed out the content and the hardware solving what had been a chicken-and-egg dilemma). The peacock was meant to give viewers watching on black-and-white sets an idea of what they were missing.

What caught my eye: No one who has every programmed graphics on an Apple II would ever refer to it as "superior technology". We have to remember that Woz was literally a design genius and he pulled so many tricks to reduce the component count and make the II cheaper that it really made it inconvenient to program. For example, the II couldn't directly display a white pixel. It had four colors in two sets of two. If you displayed two pixels from the same set adjacent to each other in an even column followed by the odd, then the two pixels were not colored, but white. So the effective horizontal resolution was actually 140 pixels, not 280, if you cared about white. And it had a way of affecting the video timing circuitry with bit 7 of every byte in the frame buffer that indicated which set of colors would be used in the group of 7 pixels. Setting and clearing bit 7 allowed you to literally see all the pixels in that 7 bit cell shift left or right by HALF a pixel. And finally, doing bitmapped graphics therefore required division by 7, something digital computers cannot do nearly as efficiently as dividing by 8. The Atari 400/800 introduced shortly after had NONE of these complications and every Apple users I knew was envious of the architecture they enjoyed.
@nickwallette6201
@nickwallette6201 Год назад
Well, it was around 2 years after, which was pretty substantial at the time. The Apple II is one of those products that might not be tour de force of technical superiority, but it used a lot of clever engineering to bring features and cost into some kind of alignment that made it both desirable and attainable to a sizable market. Of course it's compromised, and limited, and hacky. That's the reality of machines of that era. They were _all_ flawed in one way or another, usually in an attempt to cut costs and manufacturing complexity, because a product for and by engineers would've been out of reach for nearly everyone.
@donalddade5643
@donalddade5643 Год назад
@@nickwallette6201 Agree on all points. But my point was that the Apple II was not superior technology; It was inferior technology made affordable by Woz's design talent. No concomitant S-100 user was *EVER* impressed by anything that Apple did with the Apple II line, I guarantee that.
@nickwallette6201
@nickwallette6201 Год назад
@@donalddade5643 I gotcha, but I still struggle a bit with the "inferior" part. Inferior to what, exactly? This was a fight between contestants that each had one limb tied behind their back. I might not be familiar enough to really argue this, as I was only a kid when these things were in schools, and I haven't gotten back into them as an adult. I did a little bit of programming on them -- in BASIC, so I was hardly poking at hardware registers. 😀 Still, my points of reference were a C64 and TRS-80 model II at home. The C64 was definitely more impressive, but it was also quite a bit newer. Not really a fair fight. Compared to the more contemporary TRS-80, the Apple II was no slouch. It was still capable enough that it didn't feel archaic. All of these systems had these really weird, often crippling, architectural quirks. You could probably list a dozen reasons why any one of them was better than any other. For that reason, yeah "superior" might be a stretch. But so might "inferior." After all, most 8-bit and early 16-bit computers seemed to have a lifespan of maybe 3 years. The lucky ones had half a decade. Nobody was designing forever computers. :-)
@donalddade5643
@donalddade5643 Год назад
@@nickwallette6201 Again, I can't really find fault in anything you've said, but if you want a particular example, consider the S-100 of the day which was Z-80 powered, and the name comes from the fact that it had a 100 bit expansion bus, compared to the Apple's 8/16. It could drive the cool displays of the day made by companies like Tektronix with (gasp) 1024 horizontal resolution. It's architecture ensured that it had a more vibrant hardware ecosystem around it. But, as you can imagine, they were a more expensive hobby.
