It seems to me as an SC fan that his biggest strength is also his biggest weakness. He know how magical he can be, but that causes him to opt into a lot of these crazy plays off of something broken, instead of just taking the L, throwing the ball away, and living to see another down or drive.
@@ajkk909 just comes with who he is as a player too, why I said it was only part of the reason. You get the magical plays and you get the "omg just throw it already" plays. The great QBs like Mahomes, Allen, and Lamar found a balance and that's what he'll need if he wants to succeed
always a good day when Thinking Football drops - the amount of work that goes into these videos and the amount of knowledge contained within them is truly second to none, thank you sir.

@@kyledabearsfan What scares me is the thought that the Bears might have to actually...dare I say...coach and develop him. I have yet to see them do that with any QB. Everyone can't hit the ground running like CJ Stroud.
@quinnjackson731 fans like you just echo the same shit over and over. "Chicago can't develop.a dbjwndhwksofh" you realize staff changes? Right? You realize we hear this shit every day. But yall echo it because you have nothing of value to add to the conversation. Just annoying cacophony of uneducated opinions, we get it. Nobody has had to live chicago QB history like Chicago fans. But damn. Find another opinion than everyone else, or at least an educated one.
@mrb.2497 If he plays how he's playing here, there's no development needed. If our play calls are legit and he can learn them, we'll be nearly unstoppable.
Great summary. Josh Allen and Mahomes had to learn it's okay to take 5 yards, not every play needs to be a splash play and Caleb will hopefully learn that. I'd rather try and teach a guy to play a bit more safe than try and teach a guy to be more aggressive. NFL teams will at times make him see if he can take those 5 to 7 yard plays every down all game to test whether he has the patience to do that and for guys like Williams it's so hard to do as it goes against his instincts but he just has to learn a bit of patience and realize, we know what you can do and it's great, now add on to it so defenses can see there is more to you and then you'll be unstoppable.
jamesmarshall - you nailed it bud. it's so hard for guys like allen, mahomes & caleb because they've got that rocket arm. it's hard to break the hero ball habit because it's so, so damn fun. i was a QB at a super small highschool - i thought i was the shit, i thought i could read defenses. played the big schools a couple of times my senior year and boy was i humbled. those defenses were so much different. i used to get away with ripping it all over the yard and it was so fucking fun. played the big boys - figured out i couldn't but still couldn't make myself take the check down. i know it sounds shitty but... it just wasn't fun, it's so fun to be a QB and rip it. i saw an interview with Josh Allen & i could tell he was basically saying the same thing - he just tried to say it more professionally hahahaha.
@@8barbies779heck man, I never played qb, too short, but if I did I'm sure I would be playing hero ball as well. I doubt I would have ever been a decent starting qb at any level of high school, I have no pocket awareness playing NCAA14, I doubt I have pocket awareness in real life.

I wanted to keep Fields too since I thought he was developing. I think Caleb's got a faster release and love his accuracy. I just feel his weaknesses are the same as Fields (not anticipating throws or playing in schedule) while he's not as powerful as a runner more of a scrambler. I'm worried he's gonna be another Manziel. 😬 excited to see his Jayden Daniel's video.
@@Ryan-wx1bi how can he read a defense in the 1.5 seconds after the snap before he gets pressured? How can he read the defense without a competent skill group? If you think Caleb is gonna save them from that then you’re mistaken.
Although I agree that Caleb missed some easy passes to the flat or just not throwing the ball away, he was also with a defense that was 116/130 and he constantly had to score every possession. He also did not have a line or any players on offense that will be in the first or second round. You put him with the Washington or LSU’s offensive talent, he would look even better. Good video, thanks for the hard work.
That’s what I’m saying it’s insane that he’s doing this with this level of subpar talent around him. Dude is gonna be fucking lethal with a competent team around him
Looks like every snap he took is in shotgun. We need to see what he looks like reading a defense and making decisions behind the center. Even see him hand the ball off in I formation.
That’s Lincoln Riley’s system. 99.5% of snaps are going to be either from shotgun or occasionally the pistol. Just something Caleb was rarely ever asked to do was play under center. It’s that way with many college QB’s anymore. To me, I believe Caleb has most all of the traits needed to be a special QB. He has all the skills that cannot be coached, and should get more refined as time goes by. Plus, he’ll have D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen to throw to next season, which should help.
I'm no football expert but based upon this and the other Thinking Football video I just watched (Rome Odunze), this is a high quality analytical channel. Both incisive deep dives. Very well done!
Caleb has to be the first player called a bust before draft day. With that being said I truly hope this kid takes the NFL by storm. All of this unwarranted hatred is pouring gasoline on the fire.
@@IFlyMileHighthat might be true but that’s a whole different situation. People who actually watch Caleb play know he has arm talent we haven’t seen from a prospect in a minute and should develop well in the NFL
Caleb williams will be the best quarterback in the nfl the day he is drafted. Better than mahomes, allen , burrow, prescott, jackson, he will own them all.
it seems like the only people who dont understand how much better this guy is than Justin Fields, and how good of a position their team is actually in, are Bears fans 😂 CW is on an entirely different level to Fields, and the difference in their ceiling is enormous. If Caleb is even 70% as good as people expect him to be, he will still be significantly better than Justin Fields.
As a Bears fan, the great divide between us is of those who watch college film, and those who just watch Bears games. Those who watch film always want Caleb. Especially compared to Fields’ final season of college, Caleb’s arm and creativity are clearly brilliant.
I don't even want fields but this is just a dumb comment by an armchair QB who thinks he's a football expert. 98% of the people in both camps don't watch film.
@@majripple the funniest trend in the last couple years is average dudes throwing around the word “film.” maybe this guy really is “watching film” but it seems most people just watch a couple videos like this and maybe catch a few college games and then go around acting like they’re nfl scout lol
As a Lions fan I can guarantee you we want yall to take Caleb. What you could do with Fields and the draft capitol from trading out of the pick would be ridiculous. Possibly another top 5 selection next year. If. You take Caleb and he's a bust or just average, then you're basically the Jags. Not bad but not amazing, and not getting a top 10 pick
@@wlnlax14as a bear fan I agree with you, we have a chance to make a nfl roster that might even make Blain Gabbert look ok. Shopping the #1 pick could make bears pieces great for years. Thats just the system, but Johnnys arm talent and accuracy are nowhere near Caleb, Johnny had Mike and just quick feet to scramble. Caleb isnt a great athlete but he has elite arm talent that with just enough mobility can still make a big play, id say Rodgers is his best comp for how good he could be.
Its gonna be a lot of Josh Allen where he has a tendecy to do too much which is why i think the bears are trying to prep for this with moves like Swift and Allen. A cowbell back and a reliable 3rd down target

He consistently does things at the QB position that you can't even pull off in Madden. He wont have to play hero ball on the Bears and they've built a great offense around him to give him a really good chance at succeeding. He's going into a way better situation than most 1st overall QBs. His ceiling is absurdly high. I am a Bears fan and I had the pleasure of witnessing the greatest of all time at setting up blockers Devin Hester but watching Caleb I see a lot of the same magic. Watching it in slow motion it seems obvious and simple but at full speed you realize these special players can slow the game down and do the impossible for the rest of us!!

I think you undersell the pressure he seems to be constantly under. Of course he's not going to have textbook drops or mechanics when he's constantly running for his life.
Which is more of a reason why he isn't worthy of first overall. He doesn't play in rhythm. You think NFL pressure is going to be any easier? Pressure is a lot worse in the NFL dude.
@@DaBaltimoron Which is why he is going to be a bust. Dude played in a terrible o-line and still hasn't learn to play in rhythm and anticipation. If you have a bad o-line than playing in rhythm is that much more important.
Excellent A+ Breakdown. I do think people often put too lofty of a baseline for what NFL success is on these college QBs, but this was excellent stuff. Like right now the 12th best QB in the NFL overall has a LOT of flaws to their game; let alone someone whose closer to 20th like a Baker Mayfield or even Russell Wilson at this point. The criticisms of Caleb taking the easy play are fair but what is interesting is most of his criticisms are things that Bo Nix absolutely excels at; yet people hate Bo lol or at least they hate the idea of him as a 1st rounder (weird but okay). Being good in the quick game and short game has a LOT to do with presnap reads and confidence. Caleb lacks zero confidence and will be starting a lot of games so I am confident he will progress in that area. End of the day it is easier, far easier, to tone down a guy's big game hunting than it is to turn a check down artist into one.
Caleb reminds me Favre. You always knew Farve would throw 2-3 interceptable balls a game. And even if you caught them all, he might still pull off a miracle in the 4th quarter.
He hardly threw any interceptions in college. Favre wasn't a particularly intelligent player. Williams impresses as very bright, with a high capacity to learn.
@@dylankrejci9965 Caleb moves great in the pocket, but he also takes forever (like Justin) to throw after the ball is snapped. A lot of these crazy plays only happen because of that issue, and he's forced to escape the pocket or move around more than he should be, almost skittishly. I love that he keeps his eyes downfield though when that happens, something that Justin had trouble doing until this last year. But yeah, with Caleb, you can see his strengths and his weaknesses all in the same play.
@@davidcarr2689Poles will be fired if caleb is a bust. We will always remember how he had the choice to ride with fields when we finally got some talent, and traded him for a fkn 6th round pick and chose to draft caleb with the 1st ovr pick instead of trading down to keep building around fields.
The bears are going to be so good this year. FINALLY. I was disappointed about fields getting traded. But now that i know this is what we’re getting, and the team hes going to step into…. Im SUPER excited BEAR DOWN BABY 🏆
Hate to bring up fields but this is exactly what he doesn’t do, the pocket awareness on Caleb is top tier. Fields would just sit and let the guy sack him because it was either that or run, Caleb shows the pocket awareness but wants to throw after using the angles to create another pocket. This guy looks super legit.
A slower Lamar Jackson with a better arm. His lateral agility behind the line of scrimmage is the best I have seen ever. Probably better than Lamar. Lamar is faster though. This guy is good.
Lots of clean pockets in these clips and those USC wide receiver's definitely were good at getting separation. He's shifty and can throw a nice ball. I'm still not sold on him being the answer for the Bears at least. Let's see what Williams can do with an average offensive line going against NFL defenses. We will find out.
The player with number 0 at 14:10 could've totally stopped that touchdown if he wasn't jogging. Great video, didn't watch any CFB of this guy so really enjoyed this breakdown of his abilities.
I think his problems are also a product of his team. The O-Line was terrible and u can't tell me the defense giving up 35 ppg isn't on his mind when he tries to make these superman plays. It seemed like he never got to play a regular game. I think some of his flaws you have to live with it. Can he have bad footwork and miss off platform? Sure, but i'll take that every so often because of the throws he MAKES when throwing off platform and from these crazy angles. Super talented, physically gifted, SPECIAL playmaker. Accurate. Shown flashes to read defenses. Great Pocket movement. Chicago would be dumb to not take him #1
I also don't think USC is very talented and i don't really like their offense. It feels like caleb or bust. The offense never really felt like it had flow. RPO, screen, Quick Game, with the occasional NFL concept, and "Caleb work your magic" It works against the less talented teams, but against the better teams, USC would get outmatched. Again, it felt like Caleb never really got to play a real college
Guys potential is sky high, just hopes he's able to improve on his weaknesses once he's in the league. It was encouraging seeing him play more in structure in the second half of the season, especially after the Norte Dame game since that was one of my biggest criticisms of Caleb. Just hope he keeps getting better.
Honestly fantastic analysis. Slight disagreement with the anticipation aspect. He has quite a few plus anticipatory throws but i understand where you're coming from. My argument for why he didnt have more is this draft. He really didn't have much talent around him and his defensive talent was even worse. I'll also add that DJ Moore has come out multiple times saying he's surprised by Caleb's Anticipation. He wasnt trying to hate on Justin, (who he voted for to stay,) he was honestly surprised the ball was arriving that quick from Caleb.
Send me the anticipatory throws please - because I've watched every game from 23 and I couldn't find barely any He had plenty of talent round him for a college QB, many have played with worse
Best draft analysis is the business!! They better not fu**ing delete your videos again this year I’m not playing!!! We want videos everyday until draft lol!!
This might be the best breakdown on him I've ever seen. The missed pre-snap and progression reads mixed in with him trying to play hero ball a lot are really concerning, but the upside is way too high to hold those against him.. I think he can and will be coached up on those things.. My ideal scenario would be to have him sit a year while you coach it. This won't be the case and most teams don't have that option, but it would be best for his confidence and the mental game at the next level. I hope he ends up being the talent he was in college because boy was he fun to watch, but only time will tell..
