I think it's so close between him and daniels it doesn't really matter. daniels "looked" better this season but that was with a wr duo that could look like jefferson-jamarr in a couple years, while maye still played well for how bad his team is. I think it comes down to preference in physicals - game breaking speed or a herbert style build. either way, I think it comes down to coaching who turns out better. hope they both ball
@@wasru. Yeah I feel QB2 and QB3 success in the league for this years' draft will come down to situation. I bet ownership gave Poles a pass on Fields either way because he's not 'their' guy. Caleb will be Pole's true project for the immediate future. I'd def be okay with Maye with the Pats staff despite also needing to develop their O-line and receiver weapons. But I def do not trust Kliff with Maye.
Seems very similar to the profiles of guys like Herbert and Allen coming out of college. Biggest thing to me is that his elite traits are things that can't be taught, worthy of the 2nd pick.
@@user-jv7qn6eu1cNah Mariota isn’t on Mayes level as a college qb. Maye is levels above Mariota. Mariota was just a typical fast qb who made good decisions and stuff but Maye is the total package different arm angles big arm big body can scoot he can do it all. His biggest flaw is his mechanics which will tighten up in the NFL with better coaching. That and if he can get rid of that wind up he has when he throws other than that Mariota as a college QB doesn’t come close to Maye and Mayes supporting cast is dog shit at UNC those WR are shitty
dude Maye is trash he's garbanzo beans Quarterback? more like Nickelback cause he's fallen off... bro's arm is so weak he couldn't toss a salad... jkjkjkjkjk
No, it's normal. Ever notice how there are several villains for each superhero? The Vast Majority Of People can't think, only react. They have room for Only One Entity they're willing to see as Elevated. This is why Americans can't see "politicians." They only think they're looking at 'Government' whenever they see one, 'Government' a solitary Being whose only priority is Our Protection. Same with QBs. Whoever people see as The GOAT, "there can only be one."
A future gun slingers who is 21 and can develop, I would love for him to sit half to the whole season just to learn , while the patriots figure out our Oline and wide receiver depth chart . then give game that is against a weaker opponent when first starting but they say the strongest iron need to heated and forged in fire . The skills are next Level and your analysis is spot on only time will tell. Just glad we got him some offensive help.
this video is 100% CORRECT!!!! Love Drake He Can be GREAT!!! He has Some Work to do! I look forward 2 seeing him play in the Big League!!! #TarHeelNation
The issue with this is that he was coached to do so. That was the systems answer to being hot and it really set him up for faillure. Having said that, I would hate for my team to draft him that high with such inconsistent tape.
@@destinocanton Sometimes drifting is the right thing to do. For as raw and young as he is, he had the highest PFF rating against power 5 teams. He's a long way from where he could end up. Easily the most potential in this draft.
@@guyincognito320 Agreed! But not always and that was UNC's answer to being hot. They essentialy asked him to be the answer, and that set him up for faillure. He'll be more ready for that specific situation in the NFL.
13:53 This is what it all comes down to. Lacking the ability to complete the fundamental aspects of the task with consistency will always limit one's ceiling.
Josh Allen couldn’t even complete a simple slant throw on time when he first came into the league. I never thought he would be as good as he is now. That’s not to say that Maye is the same prospect that Allen was, but those things can be improved.
@@IamnotJokic True. No one is saying these things can't be learned. But for every Josh Allen, there's a Justin Fields. Two players who have all of the talent necessary to be elite, but one learned how to be consistent and the other hasn't yet. Time will always tell. The earlier one learns these things, the better.
@@hackprefectfields isn’t a good comparison, dude had no help. A guy like Naggy would do a lot to help fields but he still had no weapons to speak of in Chicago, and Allen got diggs, a better o line, and a defense that would bend and not break.
@@IamnotJokic They can be, but the chances are against it. The Bills got lucky with Josh Allen, frankly. Not all players are capable of growing like that. This kid reminds me way more of Daniel Jones.
@@CrypticCabal In terms of learning, practicing, and improving fundamentals for someone who lacks consistency but can do everything that's asked of him physically, Fields is a perfect comparison to Allen. Fields had a much improved line, DJ Moore, and a decent second option in his tight end. Was his early time in Chicago difficult? Yes. But his situation was much better this past season, yet he made no significant improvement. Regardless of the talent around someone, that does not excuse poor fundamentals and lack of work on said fundamentals. If anything failed him, it was the coaching. But even that can only shoulder so much of the blame. Even in a bad coaching situation, good players will find a way to improve. Sadly, time ran out for him.
Seems to be the best prospect in this draft, imo. Footwork can be taught, his anticipation and reads are the best in this class, and that's the recipe for success in the NFL.
No they ain't. His anticipation and reads are the worst in the class among at least the top 5. He makes the wrong reads all the time, it's impossible to tell what he's thinking back there. And he's way more of a see it, throw it type guy. Even the play at 10:00 where they were trying to highlight his anticipation, that isn't NFL anticipation. He saw his guy win on the route then threw the ball. In the NFL you need to throw that pass before the receiver is even out of their break, just going on leverage and DB position. And that's an easy read as far as anticipation is concerned, a comeback route on the sideline where you only need to watch one defender.
Happened to see this video on my RU-vid feed. Great breakdowns. This video is just another reason why I’d be fine with my team taking Drake Maye @ #2, if we don’t draft Jayden Daniels. There’s just throws that he makes that throws that nobody outside of Caleb Williams can make. THEN, he’s mobile, as well. My comps for him is Justin Herbert, Big Ben and Jay Cutler.
@@PlaySA Ouch! Honestly, he needs to sit. I believe a team like the Jets or a team with a veteran QB would be a better fit. Jayden Daniels is more ready to play, NOW. Drake Maye has lots of upside, but his flaws won’t be fixed with him starting right away.
@@1Dub79 Lets pump the brakes here. Nobody who said Herbert was going to be a good prospect ever mentioned he'd fix his weaknesses in the offseason and look like a different QB by game 2 in the regular season taking over for Tyrod Taylor. I think Maye could def start considering he can make plays in structure. It just comes down to the situation he ends up in and how his OC utilizes him while covering his possible weaknesses. He'll def need more help than he had in UNC because simulated pressures is getting super trendy in the NFL along with blitzes to confuse the hell out of young QBs.
He's young & young minded. Happy footed as well. I sincerely hope we sit him all season. ... Even if outta the playoffs early I'd still only want to see him out there for the last 2 games at the most. Am worried that the Kraft's will want him playing earlier. ... I don't believe Mayo will, but you know, is what it is. ... They were in Bill's ear & don't see that changing. Kraft's tend to cave to local media pressures. Plus, they'll want to see if he plays well early without talent, so they can continue not coming anywhere close to the cap. Shall see though. ... Hopefully I'm way off on that. Thanks for the video. ... The given time & efforts are indeed appreciated
People badly need to call out his awful OL, poor OC and scheme, plus the OC was new, as well as the lost WRs and poor weapons around him in 2023. His 2022 tape is more indicative of his potential and talent. Plus, he's young and has only played two full seasons. He has the highest ceiling of any QB in this draft.
FYI - all of the highlights shown are against non-ACC weak opponents, some of them FCS. They show one throw against Clemson and against NC State, both UNC losses.
10:00 I would not call that anticipation. The receiver won on the route. Maye doesn't throw the ball until the receiver has completely turned around. That's not NFL anticipation, in the NFL you gotta read the leverage and throw that ball before the receiver has even finished their break.
I mean, isn't every draft a gamble, regardless of the player drafted? Like you can make the case for almost every player in history. You never know until they actually play in the league.
Idk why the media discourse has now essentially been reduced to talking teams into taking a flawed qb prospect. If a prospect is not there, don’t talk yourself into it. There are superb non-qb prospects that should be taken at the top of the draft but dumb GMs feel like taking a qb is necessary.
Yeah man that happens all the time. Usually a team picking top 10 is so far from being good that they need almost everything (especially a solid O line), but usually end up throwing questionable guys into impossible situations and just ruining them. Just because your team needs a QB does not mean you should just take whichever one is available when there is top talent in other positions of need. Then when you do finally get a QB, they actually have a chance to pan out.
Because almost no QB prospect is ever flaw free - The CJ Strouds and Andrew Lucks don't come around very often Most of these guys got to this position through being great position coaches (and nepotism) so always think they can fix a players flaws, if you don't think that, you are unlikely to be an NFL coach There are fantastic players available, but the QB position is the most valuable on the roster, and defines the offense - if you dont have one, you're desperate to get one.
@@ThinkingFootball Stroud was flawed as welll... He just went to a QB system that 90% of QBs would be good in... Brock Purdy Kirk Cousins Baker Mayfield for 3 games... That system makes it easier.
@@jefeseason4990stroud is not a system qb. His touch, timing, anticipation, ability to deal with pressure are all more advanced than Brock Purdy. Brock Purdy benefits from the system AND that roster. He’s a good QB but CJ proved he’s a top tier qb as a rookie
You can’t teach size ,athleticism,or arm talent the rest con be developed. The biggest variable for these prospect is where they end up in The NFL. Mahomes might not be as successful if he had been taken by the Bears or the Patriots. Th initial coaching they receive at the next level is a major factor in their future success
at 16:21: "When the pressure piles on, the chaos multiplies". The most severe charge I ever heard you bring against a player! But it is close to your opinion of Will Lewis last year, isn't it? BTW, I learn more about the game every time I check your vids. A big thank you for your work.
Definitely not the same as Levis! I have major concerns over Mayes game, but he flashes every high level skill you wanna see - Levis never showed the anticipation and reading skills of Maye. Glad you learn more every vid - hoping to do a proper football tutorial series this summer for people to learn the game
TF's Levis opinion endured in the regular season. Granted the Titans didn't have much to work with and Levis did have a couple games where going deep got him on the highlight reel. But overall his game was eh.
If he cleans up his mechanics n pocket discipline (watching the rush instead of downfield, leaving and runnin round the pocket when not needed etc etc) he’ll be good.
Totally agree with the assessment and keeping him away from Kingsbury LOL. I do think Daniels is a better fit anyway for the Kingsbury's O, but we'll see
Commanders will sent him raw directly to war, he'll look more like the second part of the vid. But the Pats may have the patience to sit him behind Brisset for a while
Jetfan brethren here. Their breakdown on Zach Wilson was spot on. I wish JD watched it before drafting him. They said he was a 3rd round pick at best before the draft.
@@jasonderby7635he def has bad traits, I just dont thing his processing is one of them. For example, at 15:50 to me it looks more like he didn’t want to get his receiver killed by the LB, and was looking for something in the endzone. Plus, by the time the whip is really open, he is under heavy pressure. I think a lot of his processing issues (not all of them) can be put on poor scheme and OL play
That's a big ask in this league man. There are a lot of good quarterbacks already playing in it. And no way in hell does he do that if he DOESN'T work out his mechanics. He won't be doing jack if he doesn't fix his feet and overall throwing mechanics to improve his accuracy.
The good is SO good. If he just puts in the work to clean up that footwork and we don't rush to start him behind a mediocre (at best) offensive line with barely above average (including our new rookies) WRs, he could be our guy for the next 10-15 years. A new age of Patriots dominance could rise again!
@@ThinkingFootball They're silly because one trade or unexpected move ruins the whole board. I think going through each teams needs vs the prospects who could realistically be on the board for them would be very interesting though.
@@Rudipu It just seems like they're designed to get clicks to me - link a player with a team to get fans excited and draw views, whilst offering basically nothing of substance We aim to bring nuance to the game as efficiently as possible - im not here to steal your attention for the sake of it.
Such a tough evaluation, hope he gets a chance to sit for a bit to work on his footwork. Kinda looks like Jordan Love, but somehow Love gets away with the bouncy footwork
What is the ideal landing spot where you think he would develop properly? Denver doesnt have the WR to reward those lapses. NE needs to rebuild their Oline. Seattle? Edit - Jets to sit a year?
Behind Brisket or Geno and sit for a year, give him a chance to tune the mechanics and eye placement, and he could be deadly Both those are new coaching staffs though, so hard to know how they'll develop a QB I think almost every QB should come out and sit for a year, it just makes sense
@@21Kolb Pickett wasn't going to save a team hell bent on Canada's play calling until Thanksgiving last year. Along with a HC whose also hell bent on trying to win with his defense.
if the vikings manage to trade up and get him it will really be a match made in heaven for both sides, its gonna take good coaching but his ceiling could be just as high if not higher than williams
So far Drake only started in 26 college games and zero NFL Practice , so I hope Drake and the coaches are paying attention to this and we will see how he looks after a full NFL season .
As a Jets fan, i wanted them to be in a position to draft him before we got Rodgers. I just hope NE doesn't get him. If he isn't a bust, his potential is better than Herbert.
as a patriots fan, I'm hoping we get him at 3 lol. I think he's a great fit, we can sit him for a year and let brissett start to see where the weapons/oline really is at as to not exacerbate his footwork/oline trust issues. then, make the corresponding changes in the offseason and let him loose the following year
All the rumors now are the Giants are aggressively trying to get the 3rd pick from the Patriots. Some are saying that the Patriots are more interested in JJ McCarthy compared to Drake and may be looking to move down, draft JJ, and get some additional draft capital in the process. It's definitely intriguing to see if the Giants get him though and Brian Daboll can work with him in the same way he did with Josh Allen in Buffalo. There's some comparisons there. Big arm strength, athleticism, but some major concerns regarding his footwork and accuracy...definitely reminds me of Josh Allen coming out of the draft, and look at what Josh is now. Don't know what'll happen on draft night but Maye to the Giants is definitely the most intriguing outcome for me, just because of what Daboll was able to do with Josh Allen in a relatively short amount of time. Giants definitely need receiver help and secondary help, but lord knows Daniel Jones aint it for them. That ship has sailed.
As a UNC fan who has followed his career, I hope he gets a chance to sit behind someone for a season or two. There's a lot of promise, but his mechanics are not day 1 ready. I also hope he gets the O-Line he never got at UNC. He needs a team that won't rely on him to play hero ball.
I think his footwork issue being 'alleviated' will come down to the situation he's drafted in. Also some of these top prospects are already trying to fix their footwork in the time period before getting drafted and before the regular season. Maybe even to the point where the footwork issues aren't as pronounced as they are on their college tape when they get their first start in September.
Maye is like buying one of those billion dollar lottery tickets. You know that it is a long shot but if you hit with his trait if the stars align you could have something special. If he ends up in Minnesota I give him a decent chance to be a good QB. If he goes to NE or Washington his rooky contract will be his only contract.
I feel Maye can grow with the Pats. O-line is a huge weakness for them to fix but when its good, they aren't afraid to run the ball with their bruiser in Stevenson. Plus their defense when healthy is rock solid. Their coaching staff on offense has something to prove but certainly not the known sore commodity that is Kliff being the OC with the Washington team. Where he is most certainly going to waste the existing receiver talents there because he can't program a competent passing game.
There is good and bad in every prospect. None of them are perfect. They all make mistakes. Maye will work hard to correct his. He chose to stay in Carolina despite Bama and other NIL offers. His loyalty will pay off
