Why the BMPCC 4k is still amazing

I can't think of a single camera that has affected the filmmaking industry more than the Pocket Cinema 4k. I see them laying around on nearly every production I'm on, whether it's film or broadcast type work. So why does everyone love the BMPCC 4k so much? Is the BMPCC still worth it in 2023? What is the image quality like? How much does a BMPCC 4k cost? Should you buy a BMPCC 4k in 2023? I'll try to answer all of these questions in this review, so thanks for coming by. I hope you enjoy.

This camera to this day is still my easy recommendation. Only reason I sold mine was because I realized I was rigging it out well beyond its "pocket" size. Went to Canon for a year, but i desperately missed the Blackmagic "Look" and BRAW. Pulling the trigger on the Ursa 12K today, but would happily shoot on the Pocket 4K if the opportunity ever came up again:) thankful for this camera, it started my career!

Blackmagic is also a great company to deal with. I fried the powerboard of the camera, (my stupid fault) I contacted BM and I found out that their service centre was just 15 min from where I live in Melbourne, Australia. I dropped it off at 11am and at 3pm they called to say it was ready to pick up! Can't do that with most camera companies...

Absolutely! My BMPCC stays locked in the same position as my main camera which has got a 8-16mm Lumix G Vario lens. I don’t have a speed booster so there’s a crop (I think right? lol) but it works perfect for my small space! The other two cams I use are Sony a6400’s! I have a cheap 12mm on one and the kit lens for my overhead! I’ll eventually put more money into lenses (and likely another BM cam to have a more matched look for the angles!

I've been using this camera for 3.5 years . I also upgraded from two Sony APSC cameras (6500 and 6300 which I still own). I'm still blown away by the image quality from this with the right lenses (I use Zeiss milvus glass with and without metabones .64xl). I'm looking at adding a Pyxis or BMCC 6K FF soon for more detail, and to get away from using the metabones where I currently use it, but I can't see myself ever getting rid of this camera due to it's image and versatility. The image should not be possible for the price they sell these at!

Yep, love this camera. Bought it a couple years ago to go with my OG (which I still use and recently got a cage for) and also have the 6k g2 and yeah it's funny, i grab the 4k way more than any of those other cameras.

I've been using this camera for a few years and it's a workhorse for all kinds of shooting! The small size even when built out causes less attention when out in public and being in the LA area, that is a must if you don't want to be harassed for permits. Recently, I went to a park to film with a lens I barely get to use and it's just great! Even though I'm adding the Broadcast G2 to my gear, the Pocket 4K will always have a place for my shooting needs.

I still have one of these as my main camera. Of course I would be more merrier with a 6K pro, for the built in ND-s alone, but for this price and value, this camera is unbeatable! However its not for run and gun situations, and maybe most of the oneman crews will prefer a good autofucos system, good in body stabilization camera ower this; but in image, its quite unbeatable.

Hi Jake. I have never done any sort of video (I mostly like to shoot stills) but this year I ended up with a BMPCC4k that I decided to buy because of the lens that it came with as part of a kit (canon 70-200 L 2.8 IS II and metabones Ultra x.71 speed booster) and my plan was to sell the body to get some of my money back but now I am wanting to explore video. I also own a Panasonic LUMIX G9 with the Leica DG 10-25 f1.7 that I purchase for stills but can also do video using that lens on both bodies. What do you think I would be better off with ? The black magic or the G9?

lol I’m in the same boat. I used one for a shoot when it just got out, but didn’t buy one, I got a gh5S instead that got used a lot (needed the smaller codecs, tilt screen, evf, slow motion, battery life…). More Recently bought one second hand to put on drones but the studio 4k g2 replaced it before it could fly… In the meantime all projects I do I shoot internal with gh6 and s5 II Was about to list the pocket for sale but I’ll do a personal project or something with it before.

The 4k wont grow old or unused. Ive used them on and off since they were brought out, they color match so easily with so many other sensors, plenty of latitude and can CST easily to another space to match easy. Its not arri skin tones but it's also not 35,000.

I love the video, we all know what happens if you lose your favorite cup of coffee. I bought a 6k pro and a 4k at the same time and perhaps because the 6 has a cage, a Milvus 50mm and weighs a lot, almost all the time I use the 4k with an 8-18 PanaLeica. That camera has something very attractive and I don't find that much difference with the 6k Pro.
@jakehayden998
@jakehayden998 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for saying that, I'm glad you liked it. How do you like the 8-18mm? I've only heard good things about that lens
@dondouglas
@dondouglas 9 месяцев назад
@@jakehayden998 I shot most of this clip with 4k 8-18 and the close-ups with a 6k/Milvus 50mm. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eX7CwFETsfc.html&ab_channel=DonDouglas Actually, I bought the 8-18 first because it seemed like a good lens, and also with the same filter thread as the Millvus 50. That's why I bought the 4K. It is a very versatile lens and there is a lot of quality and I am very happy with it. I have a large collection of Tiffen filters, almost all of them diffusion and I wanted to obtain homogeneous images with both cameras. very happy with the choice. But I am not unaware that there are many more videographers who prefer focus and other characteristics that BMPCC makes them different, for me the most important thing is the "type" of image it makes. More organic and if in the end you are going to edit, filter, pass the Dehancer, add noise... They are two opposite profiles, author/documentarian. And I have a career as a professional photographer and I wanted something with which I could shoot what I thought because I was lucky that they wanted my photos because of my "style", because of the type of magazines, which is a privilege. BMPCC is like a friend.

I just got one second hand. How was the Leica 12- 60? Or should I get the sigma?
@uncosminreels
@uncosminreels 10 месяцев назад
Even better, get the new sirui nightwalker. Take what you want out of my experience, but I used speedboosters for the last 3 years with the sigma 18-35, tokina 11-16 and canon 24-105 (and obviously 1000s invested in accessories like v mounts, rods and so on). While it paid for itself in full and over that, and used and abused the ef mount lenses, there's something so nice about cine lenses. Having a happy AC on set is what you want as a DP. Even solo shooting is easy as hell. Now more than ever there's a plethora of mft cine lenses at very affordable prices so I'd highly recommend them. With the nightwalkers you have a t1.2 aperture which is roughly an f1.0 on photography lenses but the image is not compromised even wide open
@jakehayden998
@jakehayden998 10 месяцев назад
Yeah I agree with @uncosminreels . I haven’t used the Nightwalkers yet but I’ve only heard good things about them. I rented the Leica 12-60 because I figured it would be the most versatile lens possible. The optics were great and the bokeh and spatial rendering was all great, but the image stabilization was lackluster (very robotic and jerky) and I would love to have a faster lens when using micro 4/3 sensors. The Sigma 18-35 is always a great bet, that’s a fantastic and versatile lens. I would be really interested in the Nightwalkers if I owned a Pocket 4 though, that might be the route I would take

I got my 6K Pro stolen 2 weeks ago - Had the option to replace that, get a Red Raven/ Scarlet W, or bmpcc 4k - I went with the 4k - I loved the 6k pro but felt limited to lenses and styles of filming due to the EF mount. There is just something about the 4K sensor that is special, idk what it is but it satisfies some part of me the 6K did not. Reds have beautiful images but theres something about them that also lacks character (on top of the ecosystem, rigging etc.) The 4K is truly a gem, and the fact it is constantly compared to the FX3 5/6 years later, should speak for itself.

@jakehayden998
@jakehayden998 6 месяцев назад
Great question, it totally depends on the situation. The pocket 4k is much much much cheaper than the A7siii and is more designed for cinema work (so no autofocus or ibis or anything). The A7siii has way more assist features and versatility with a great image still. I think if you don't mind some rigging you can save some money and go with the pocket 4k. If you need more of a "content creation" camera or you really want a full frame sensor go with the A7siii. Since I'm doing more RU-vid stuff these days, I would probably go with the A7siii maybe, I would just have to save up some money for a while
