For other nations, it might just be an open-faced sandwich. But for the Danes, Smørrebrød is the culinary heart of the country. At its core: rye bread topped with a variety of ingredients. We traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark, to discover why people here can't get enough of their Smørrebrød, how it's prepared, and how to enjoy it the right way. Velbekomme!

Correction: The roast beef smorrebrod was served with spicy mayonnaise (remoulade) and horseradish.

I cant believe you said grated cheese and mayo. Mayo may have worked, but cheese? Nah.

Mayo on a roast beef is 1 year in prison, like carrying a weapon. Repeat offenders will get hard labour in the ice mines on Greenland. First year without gloves. Dear DW, careful, spreading fake news like that can get the TV station in big trouble.

It breaks my heart to see this. it’s not mayonnaise and grated cheese, it’s Danish remoulade and grated horseradish and it’s one of the greatest classic of smørrebrød…

Thank you for sharing that. One of my least favorite combinations is mayo with cheese. (:

Thank you, I was skeptical. Almost everywhere on the planet, mayo anything is mainly for tourists.

I guess the reporter wasn’t paying attention and during editing had to guesstimate whatever the contents were.. and yes, it breaks my heart too.

The “shooting star” version was invented to honour kosmonaut Yuri Gagarin when the first man in space visited Copenhagen some time in the early sixties.

Hmm... I can make my usual sandwich without the second slice of bread. This is eye-opening, and mouth watering. (:

Whew! The sandwiches, or open-face meals, look lovely. I’m not a huge fan of rye bread. But they do look lovely. Oh, and I assumed the mayo was not just a generic bland dressing over that delightful treat. No worries or complaints from this non-Dane viewer.❤🇩🇰

I wish all these videos showing Danish smørrebrød would show the day-to-day, plain version in addition to the fancy version (which we call "højt belagt" = "high coated"). The plain version consist of just 3-5 components: 1. Rye bread (or white bread if you are a barbarian) 2. Ready-spread "butter" (or real butter if you feel fancy) 3. A main ingredient like a piece of cold-cut meat, liver paté, mackerel in tomato sauce, slices of a boiled potato / hardboiled egg / tomato / cucumber. Or you use various mixes like - "Russian salad" = chopped redbeet mixed with mayonnaise - "Æg salad" = chopped egg mixed with mayonnaise, salt, and some curry powder 4. Garnish, usually just 1-2 types, like remoulade or more mayonnaise, roasted onion (good with the sliced potatoes and tomatoes, but not mackerel), a sprinkle of herbs (chives, garden cress). 5. A sprinkle of salt, grounded pepper, more curry. When listed like that it begins to sound complicated, but in reality it is quite simple, low-key, and easily done. And you can indeed pick it up and eat it without the use of cutlery. Where it differs from the complicated, "high coated" version is that you leave out the fancy fresh green leaves, you leave out the freshly cut onion rings, fresh grated horse radish, fish eggs, pickled capers seeds, lemon splice, etc. All these things piles up making it necessary to use a knife and fork.

Did you even do research, or did you just narrate over what you could see? It's Remoulade and Horseradish.

We are not obsessed with it. Most people only eat it when they go out or at special occasions. We do however eat a lot of simply open-faced sandwiches with 1-2 toppings besides butter.

Excuse me, but I find it challenging to appreciate the concept of stacking an entire meal on a single piece of bread. It appears to be quite impractical, as the structure is likely to collapse after the first bite. I must admit that it is not particularly appealing to me

Yeah, I tell you, there's nothing I crave more than a small, €17, open-faced sandwich. No accounting for taste!

They messed up the first one. NEVER rye bread with fish, when it's smørrebrød.

Italians put 3 things together and call it different things to sound pretentious. The french have 4 sauces, yet I bet you call them master of cooking right. I bet you burn pasta on the regular.
