Why the Dutch Flag Doesn't Have Orange - The History of the Dutch Flag

Why is the Dutch flag not orange? The colours of the Dutch flag are red, white, blue. The history of the flag of the Netherlands is an interesting one and goes back to the County of Holland. When the Dutch provinces led by Holland were revolting against Spain in the so-called Dutch Revolt. In the Dutch history this revolt is also know as the Eighty Years' War (Tachtigjarige Oorlog) and took place in the Low Countries. William of Orange (Willem van Oranje) started the uprising in 1568 and was assisted by the Sea Beggars (Watergeuzen) to fight off the Spanish. These men fought under the Prince's Flag (Prinsenvlag) which was coloured: orange, white and blue (also called: oranje-blanje-bleu). The conflict ended in 1648. After this the Dutch Republic adopted the States Flag (Statenvlag). The Dutch East India Company (VOC - Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) and the Dutch West India Company (WIC - West-Indische Compagnie) made both use of the States Flag with their logo in the middle white part.
In 1795 the Batavian Revolution (in the aftermath of the French Revolution) took place and the downfall of the Dutch Republic was a fact. Now the Batavian Republic was created: a French client state. This republic was succeeded by the Kingdom of Holland, the French Empire and the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. From that point on the red, white, darkblue flag was in use.
It was made official in the 1930s by Queen Wilhelmina who signed a royal degree outlawing the Prince's Flag. By this time the Prince's Flag was used by the Dutch fascist organisation NSB (Nationaal-Socialistische Beweging). During the Second World War in the Netherlands the swastika flag was used. After the Liberation of the Netherlands in WW II the old flag came back. The Dutch flag inspired many other flags. The flag of Luxembourg and the Netherlands look very similar but have actually no relation with each other. The old flag of South Africa as well as the flag of New York do have ties with the Dutch flag. Also the flags of the Dutch Caribbean (Dutch Antilles) have similarities with the flag of the Netherlands. In this video you will learn why the Dutch flag is not orange.

I asked the question of the old Prince flag to Derk Willem Visser, a Dutch flag expert. His answer was that the Staten Generaal of the Netherlands had a red flag. The SG was the highest political organisation, the forerunner of the current Dutch parlement. The SG changed to the colours from Orange to Red, because Orange was the colour of the Dutch Prince Willem of Orange. So the SG wanted to display their power by changing the Dutch flag.

And you also mentioned the fact that Peter the great once visited Armsterdam. The name of St. Petersburg was initially "Sankt-Pieter-Burch"(in Dutch Manner) later he changed it to "Sankt-Peterburg" under German influence. It seems Dutch peoples had a lots of influence on Russian Empire also. The prime minister of Russian Empire "Sergius Witte" who did so much to the sake of the empire was of Dutch ancestry. As we say. If it isn't Dutch, it isn't much.

I like this video about the Dutch flag. Specialy the part about the Staten Vlag. But now rises some questions in my head. The current colors of the Dutch flag was red/white/ dark blue, while the staten vlag is red/white/light blue. Now here is my question. Is the National flag of Luxembourg the actual staten vlag or not? In your video you said it was inpired by the national coat of arms but wasnt luxembourg part of the Netherlands during the 80 year war and therfore used the same colors in the coat of arms like the other coastal provinces. Brussel was part of the Nederlanden as well? And during the republic era of the Netherlands The red/white/blue was on every ship, but wasn't the national flag in that era actualy the yellow flag with the black lion holding 7 arrows corresponding the 7 provinces?
@HistoryHustle
@HistoryHustle 4 года назад

As a child in a US school, I found it difficult to draw fifty white stars on a field of blue in the upper left corner, with crayons. Across our southern border in Mexico, the flag has an eagle, sitting on a cactus, holding a snake. I thought of our school aged Mexican neighbors, sitting at their little desks, trying to cope with eagles and snakes. Ay Chihuahua! One day, I cornered a Mexican-American and asked him about elementary school flag-making. He said, "No we don't draw the eagle, snake, cactus.That image is on the back of our coins. We place a coin under the paper upon which we are drawing the flag.and use the side of a pencil to project the image onto the flag." Mystery solved.

What we where taught at school in South Africa is that the Orange in our then fag originated from the naval flag of the Netherlands but the red would almost always have faded in use on the high seas and sun exposure and thus was orage by the time the ships reached South Africa. Quite the opposite of what you where thuaght why it was changed to red. Then I must admit the Union Jack alwas where as red as can be so it is most likely a folk tale

I live in a city that has a direct North Sea passenger, cargo and vehicle ferry link twice a day to Rotterdam and Zeebrugge in Belgium and I have seen the Netherlands flag on many occasions flying on Dutch owned and registered ferries and also many chemical tankers, river and sea cargo vessels, and various other types of ocean going ships. It is quite common to see German, Dutch, Finnish and some Swedish, Danish and Norwegian, and Polish, Russian, Estonian and Latvian etc owned ships with their national flags but it is not often that Belgian or French flags are seen. Interesting history. Have you read the novel The Sea Beggars by Cecilia Holland? She's an American who's written a lot of historical fiction, though she doesn't so much emphasize the historical details. I found out recently that my family descends from a couple of the most prominent families in early Dutch colonies in the US, in what is now New York and New Jersey. There are a lot of records because the Dutch Reformed Church kept very good history of their members.

I'm originally Dutch, but I'm now an Indonesian citizen. Our red and white flag (which is the same flag as Monaco!) has various origin stories. The most common narrative is that many standards of various kingdoms on the islands featured red and white prominently as well as on traditional dress. One myth suggests the independence movement tore off the blue from the Dutch flag because blue represented European royalty. Finally, the flag of the Majapahit Empire was 9 alternating red and white stripes (which is still the flag of the Indonesian navy nicknamed the 'war snakes' flag).

Here in the UK there is a reason why we say "red white and blue", as opposed to the colours in any other order. In the 17th and 18th centuries the Royal Navy was organised into three squadrons, their order of seniority being the Red Squadron, the White Squadron and then the Blue Squadron. Then there was a reorganisation at the turn of the 18th/19th century and all British ships were to fly just the Red Ensign, Royal Navy vessels the White, and other government vessels, plus some other exceptions, flew the Blue ensign, which is the position still today. When I was in the Royal Naval Reserve there was a probably scurrilous story that the French say "Blue, white and red" when describing thier Tricolour in order to be different from us Brits!😂

I think it's a mistake. As far as I can tell (as a layman), that flag could be a symbol of our fight for independence from the Spanish, or of our appreciation of Willem van Oranje and his role in securing our independence. If people we don't like (e.g. NSB) start flying it, and ascribe a different meaning to it, what do we do? If you say "Ok, we will never fly it again, it's a symbol of Nazism now", aren't you giving them what they want? As well as sacrificing a part of your culture? What's stopping modern day Nazis from flying our current national flag and saying it stands for the idea that the Dutch are the real übermensch and we should rule all other peoples? Nothing. If they do, we shouldn't abandon our national flag. We should just laugh at them.

I had always wondered how did South Africa borrow the Prince's Flag, but the only explanation I got was that in 1928 Afrikaners changed the disliked Union Flag into something "more Dutch" and the Prince's flag just came along (yes sure, but WHY?) while they were - and I hope no Afrikaner reads this - (re)inventing themselves as as a nation (maybe I am being to harsh). And oh, there are many cases of souring of symbols by extremism throughout the history...

It’s too bad the old Dutch flag with orange has been corrupted by current political groups. Perhaps one similar to the New York State flag with a Dutch coat of arms would be acceptable. It’s a shame that the House of Orange is not represented on the current flag.

I thought the reason was going to be because of the orange/white/blue flag's similarity to the apartheid-era flag of South Africa.

O no Some Slavic flags come from the Russian flag, it's true, but the Russian flag comes from the fleet flag of the Byzantine Empire - Russia being the inheritor of that state and a Third Rime Peter the Great went to Netherlands but the Russian flag predates Peter At least that's what I learnt

let us apply the logic to something else: swastikas are also not nazi because buddhist existed with swastikas before nazis. Fasces are not a fascist symbol because Roman senate guard existed before fascism was a thing. quality logic.
@HistoryHustle
@HistoryHustle 4 года назад
Originally not but since the nazis used the symbol and gesture to a great extent you cannot other then see them connected with evil and totalitairism.

@@HistoryHustle Like many people in the US, we have a flagstaff bracket on our house, where we put up the US flag on 4th July, etc. My wife had dual citizenship and liked to put up a Dutch flag on certain days, also once in a while, the Amsterdam flag- but we had to stop putting that one up, because some people thought it was some kind of Nazi flag.

Its all ridiculous why the Princenvlag wasn’t used, the First Dutch King (the real one) should have used it after the Napoleonic wars! When a 16th century flag becomes a racist one just because nationalists prefered this one 🤦🏻‍♂️
