Why the FNAF Movie Doesn’t Need (and shouldn’t have) an R Rating 

How excited are you for the FNAF on a scale from hyped to HYPED?

Bro the Dark Knight has more blood and gore than most actaul R rated horror movies and that was able to do it in a PG 13 superhero movie...Fnaf is gonna be just fine with a PG 13 rating.

Well said and done. I may not be into horror content that much, but I know that the thought of something scary can actually be worse than the actual scary thing, because there's a 50/50 chance that what you heard is the truth, and no matter if it's true or not, you are scared...

I think it makes perfect sense that the movie is rated PG-13, since the franchise has a lot of young fans. But as an older fan, it does makes me a little sad knowing that the movie probably won't be as scary as it could have been (note that I said scary, not gory). I'm missing the uncanny valley of the animatronics and the general uneasiness of the pizzeria. The production quality looks amazing and I love the casting, so I think the movie will be good. I thought M3GAN was good, too, but again, it was meant to be more of a social satire than horror.

When the movie was announced, I have a feeling it's was going to be PG 13 because when you think about it, this movie could be the perfect opportunity to show the next generation about Fnaf and they could be Fnaf fans as while. Plus sometimes even PG 13 movies can be creepy as well.

I 100% agree with this. I will admit I do like a R rated gore fest but even I have to admit not every horror movie needs to be Evil Dead sometimes you can watch a PG-13 horror movie and still have a good time

I'm not into horror stuff because I'd rather feel happy in entertainment than scared (call me a baby over having a preference all you want, I don't care), but I don't think the rating automatically hurts the quality of the movie. As you said, there have been well-received horror films with a PG-13 rating, so I don't really see why the rating would matter much in the grand scheme of things. If you plan to showcase lots of blood and gore, then sure, an R rating makes more sense. What I think people should worry about is the actual quality of the movie from the trailers so far and if it looks like something they're interested in over a film rating that diminishes nothing for a FNAF movie.

Since this film was annouced I was always in the PG-13 camp and never understood why people are upset it isn't R. Here are my reasons to why: A) the games themselves aren't gory. They always been scary from the uncanny vally alone. B) there's a group of fans that are adults and kids. Why do people want to exclude kids from watching this film?

9:30 the same applies to that episode of Rick and Morty with the talking cat. But getting on topic, FNAF didn't really seem like the type of franchise to have a ton of swears anyway, because having more than 2 "F" bombs is enough for an "R" rating alone

I am here to put a example for the what you think of in your head is better than what you see. There is a film called jaws where they barely even show the shark… and cloverfield where the monster barely is on screen.

I feel like PG-13 is the perfect rating. I’m not really a fnaf fan and I have never played the games nor will I watch the movie because I’m a massive coward😅 but I do know a good amount about the franchise because of matpat (I watch videos about the game I’m too scared to play. Idk why. I guess I’m a masochist or something). Like you said, a lot of the games if any of them aren’t out right gory and a lot of the Fanbase are teens so having it be PG-13 just feels perfect to me

IMO, fnaf has always been targeted towards a PG-13 audience ever since the first game. The games were never THAT disturbing to earn an M/R rating. The only times they showed gore were the game over screens from fnaf 1 & 4, Michael getting scooped in Sl, and springtraps design. Also, when someone doe’s actually die, it’s either mention in a disturbing way, or show visually by the form of an 8-bit mini game. Also fun fact: someone who worked on the fnaf movie does conform that the movie is getting an R-rated cut. So that will make the people stfu

9:29 Thanks for bringing up this point because a week ago I went with my friend to see it and was disappointed it wasn't R saying that BS argument of " Everyone complained when Let there be Carnage was PG-13 why are people defending this?" (He isn't a comic book fan btw). And I told him that the difference between this and Let there be carnage is that we are SHOWN what Carnage can do in the comics and it was so disappointing being toned down meanwhile as you said we are implied something that adds to the horror.

I hate blood but one thing I won't hate is that beautiful beautiful springlocks scene

While yes there are some situations in fnaf that would need blood (bite of 83, Afton’s death, etc) the main story doesn’t need it, and you can be scary without gore, these people are acting like fnaf is supposed to have iron king levels of blood but fnaf 1 didn’t need blood to be scary, hell the whole thing that made the animatronics terrifying in the original was because they were uncanny, animatronics already look unsettling and the animatronics in the movies look like real life animatronics while simultaneously looking identical to the games (give or take the color of Bonnie’s fur) so they don’t necessarily need gore, if there was any scene in fnaf lore that I would want to see, it would be aftons death, even if it’s just a shadow while hearing it happen, it’s the only scene that I feel like would need some gore.

This is the video I was looking for. I absolutely agree with the arguments, but I also think that the part of the community that is criticizing the movie is only a minority, but makes a lot of noise and so we think they're more than they actually are.

I am personally really glad it isn't 'R rated' (Or a 15 in the UK, which is where I am from). In England, its actually a 12. But anyways. FNaF is a physcological horror game. And I hope the movie is the same. Physcological horror, with mild blood scenes for (what we hopefully get) the Springlock scene, some hallucination scenes, and possibly the punching in the fountain, William strangling Vanessa, stabbing Mike, the Freddy mask saw contraption, etc. But other than that, the movie is fine. I am so excited to finally see this after 6-8 years now, and I'm actually getting tickets for it on my 15th Birthday which is on the 1st of October. Thanks mum! Appreciate it ❤

I absolutely agree with you! An R rating would have been too strong for FNAF. Kind of like what you have mentioned, it was never so violent that it needed an M rating, so why would they give a movie such a restricted rating when the game it’s based on wasn’t even that restricted? PG-13 is a good rating, because it is equivalent to the games’ ratings. Now, personally, I am very, very happy that it’s rated PG-13. I was actually really worried that it would get an R rating, but I got so relieved when I found out it’s going to be PG-13. I have seen R rated movies before, and I even have some favorite movies that are rated R, but usually, I can’t stand them and tend to avoid them. So, I was really, really happy when they revealed it was going to be PG-13! Again, this is just personally. I’m just saying why I’m happy based on me. In terms of FNAF itself, it’s like what you said, that it doesn’t need an R rating because the games are rated T (the same as PG-13) and it doesn’t explicitly show the violence, so hence, it shouldn’t be more intense than how it already is. But for me, it’s a perfect rating because I will be able to watch a movie based on one of my favorite video games with ease, without having to worry about seeing graphic, disturbing content.

Oh yes! I am so ready for this movie! This is one movie i cannot miss seeing in theaters! Plus i don't care if it's not Rated R i think PG-13 is fine. I still think they can still make the movie very scary in a PG-13 rating. So i for one have high hopes for this movie! As a long time fnaf fan since 2014 myself i know this movie is gonna do fantastic! And i cannot wait to see the movie myself! But overall i do agree that fnaf in the games rarely shows blood or gore. I’m binge watching Lost right now for the first time and I just finished season 3 episode 14. Something happened in the episode that really annoyed me and I really want to rant about it but none of my friends are available so I’m just slowly suffering💀. I agree on the last part when it comes to horror is that you need to find a balance to show and not show the audience sometimes not showing something is better as it leads to the imagination of the viewer to fill in the blanks the way they see it in their own unique way leading to many compelling conversations. if horror movies just showed you every single thing on the screen it would get predictable and lose its impact for the audience so I think it was a smart move to make it PG-13 you know.

I actually think that horror games are better than horror movies. I would hate the fnaf movie if it's r rated. And since I'm 13 this year, and I hate gore, and pg-13 means parents should cover their kids' eyes, I will cover my eyes when I see something I don't like to see

In it, Garvey Write(Who is this games version of William Afton) not only murdered some kids, but it's heavily implied that he raped a 15 year old girl with the way he dragged the girl in cardboard theater, how he stated it was fun and that she was a hot 15 year old, havoc chicas arms being long most likely cause she was pinned down when getting raped to death, and the newspaper article saying she was most likely raped. I mean I wouldn’t mind if they did bump it up for Williams death to be a bit more game accurate (right now most of the kills are just really goofy) I mean seriously the spring locks suits in these movies doesn’t look anything like the horrifying death traps they’re supposed to be Like you would die if you didn’t get medical attention but these things should cause deliberating maimings from even the most minor faults I seriously question how they are going to explain how springtraps endo shows through when this movie is they clear to point out that only the torso retracts Like seriously how to the eyes work in these things Springtrap’s silvery eyes are quite important (and necessary for animatronic mode) and yet I don’t even thing the suit had eyes without a person inside

Honestly R rating fits imo pretty well for this franchise. At the end of the day, its still a series about a serial killer killing children and their souls possessing animatronic robots that attack people at night and stuff u into suits. Just cause of the way the fnaf community is today is not a reason to make it less gory or bloody just so kids arent scared to watch it. When scott cawthon made fnaf the original, it was the IDEA of being something scary, something terrifying, something dark. As such the movie should be too.

I respect the decision on making the FNAF movie PG13 but ,I think the FNAF movie should be rated M for Mature Audiences only for kids protection reasons.

FYI please don't use sales as a metric for something's inherent quality, because media can be bad and still sell well 7:51 maybe, but killer robot dolls aren't exactly realistic either so 🤷‍♂
