In germany we have this nice saying that goes "Wo Öl ist, ist kein Rost - Service der nix kost" which translates to "Where there is oil, there is no rust - service at no cost"
I recall Lockheed Martin intentionally designed the SR-71 Blackbird to leak (edit: fuel, not oil) in order to cool down the plane when flying at high speeds.
Yeah my thoughts exactly. Because their all in storage or broken and getting fixed. Maybe he should have kept the land cruiser as his run around vehicle..but that makes too much sense.
His shitboxes are in wizard's shop and I doubt he wants to drive any of his nice cars over salty frame-eating roads tbh Maybe his conversion van but he seems to like that one a lot too
@@gndesign25 To be fair, would you want to drive his cars? All of them have some kind of weird quirk or have 10,000 horsepower and the ability to wrap themselves around a tree if you aren't used to handling that much power.
Back in the day of 2007 I had a GL450 Ive never had any problems with it. I kept it for 3 years and i absolutely loved it. Never gave me 1 issue at all. I eventually traded it in and got a LX570
Nah the 450 and 550 GLs were fairly solid. Normal body electric quirks and such but nothing your average enthusiast can't manage. Idk about the diesels, trying to learn about them. Wish it was the old inline 6
Yeah, you hear this a lot about every single expensive but crappy car. If you listen to Range Rover drivers talking after a few drinks all of them claim that their cars are the pinnacle of reliability...
@@kaur9384 I have never once had a DD that gets anywhere near 40mpg. And I drive almost 20K miles/year. Current car is like 32mpg and prior two cars were like 22mpg
Both comments hit the nail on the head. Another fun fact, when he drops the next car off, it probably won't be the same one he picked up, and the one he drives home won't be the car previously dropped off.
The diesel spraying is a feature! Anti-rust proofing built right in. That's that genius Mercedes engineering that the Wizard was talking about in his video yesterday.
The “built like a tank” phrase used to describe how durable, tough and safe some road vehicles (usually Benzes) are needs to be retired. It doesn’t make sense if you think about it. My neighbours were tank mechanics in the army in the 80s who were taught by two generations of tank mechanics, and they always laughed of how all tanks (current and past) are pretty much coddled by their crews so they won’t let you down by breaking down. They had to be attentive to Oil & filter changes every 150 miles, constant engjne and transmission and alignment maintenance , endless cleaning of its interior and engine bay, and tuneups of its weapons systems. And they were cumbersome to drive and drank fuel as if the liquid was plentiful and was flowing in a stream by the side of the road for the tank crew to scoop litres from. An appropriate term would be “Built Benz Tough” or something else like that.
My mom had a '14 diesel GL. It was a good car until the exhaust had an unexplained issue (2 months in the shop) and the timing chain needed replaced. All under 60k miles.
@@ЕмилЕфендулов You can put a cigarette out in a jar of diesel, it was one of the demonstration the instructors would do at college. Diesel is way less flammable than petrol .
I’ve had one of these since 09, the only issue I’ve had is the air suspension which we switched for a cheaper aftermarket part that works better. Engines super reliable imo
Mercedes ad on a video dissing mercedes products and then youtube demonetized people for not being ad friendly channels because they talk politics or guns
The GLs are really nice if you can do some of the repairs since the parts are reasonable. I have a 2008 GL550 and every time I took it to the dealer the estimate was between $2,500 and $4,000 to fix the issue. I started to do all the work several years ago and I'm almost up to 150,000 miles now. The ride, the power, the stereo, the space is really nice and it still looks great for an 08.
I have a 09 GL550 gas, not diesel, and I have done spark plugs, oil filter housing, and throttle body cleaning. 2 years strong and happy. I am in the boat of I would never recommend anybody to buy a mercedes because of the cost and unreliability, but sometimes you hit gold and this SUV hauls you know what!
In the UK so still mpg (although different from US mpg?) I can easily get 70mpg from my Golf TDI, even my MK1 TT V6 gets 30mpg (on a good day).... has hoovie got his foot permanently on the floor? 😂
@@Rexbraiku facts. We have one of these. It’s amazing to drive. People who to broke and complain bout life and listen to others are the ones who bad mouth BMW and Mercedes. It’s annoying smh.
Air suspension lasts forever - if you use it, problem is most people never hit that button to raise the vehicle, rubber deteriorates, you don’t use it you lose it. Fix? If you are at red light , hit that button let it raise , it come down by itself at 40mph.
Since my GL I have become a very proficient Mercedes mechanic. Any dealer level work (Larchmont NY) did under warranty I have had to go back and do over now that it's out of warranty. Plastic trim = $hit. Rear bags, intake manifold (got a code and any bolt intake related was loose including the TBI). Striped skid plate bolts. Runs like a raped ape for such a big vehicle. Still love it though.
That razor blade was thoughtfully left behind by the last GL owner for the next GL owner in case someone after hearing the GL repair estimate needed to commit Seppuku?

Bought an 07 GL320 for my wife (at the time) a few years ago. I own a mechanic shop and it immediately needed a transfer case and a pair or arnott front struts. She loved it and it drove great (167k at purchase). She hits me with a divorce not soon after, and wants to keep the Benz I bought her. Fine, whatever. In a years time, she takes it to another euro shop and drops 10 thousand bucks on it! The ac compressor gave out and she got a $4K Estimate and called me up. She was throwing in the towel and wanted to dump it. I gave her 2,500. A $500 compressor kit later and I have a truck for the most part I love driving. Has 250ish K miles on it and needs the engine dropped and resealed, but that’s not hard for me. I want to make it into an overland type rig when I get some spare time. 10/10 would not recommend one for an average person.
Well done. A shet sandwich is best served cold. Hopefully she sees the car still driving around and takes out her rage on her new or soon to be next ex-husband LOL. Stay gold.
I remember going to the Lexus dealer with my parents when my mom was looking at the gx. They gave me a TON of macaroons and ive loved Lexus ever since.
Bought a 09 GL320 with 150,000km. I’m a 15 year BMW mechanic. Got it cheap. $4800. Smoking issue. Had the DPF SCR EGR Swirl flaps deleted. All work I did myself. Had to replace the timing chain as it was stretched. Replaced chain and guides. Cam gear teeth were worn slightly from sloppy chain but left them. Injection pump failed replaced that. Replaced 4 injectors. Vacuum pump gear was worn due to worn chain. Replaced that. Installed a catch can because it was burning copious amounts of oil. Replaced the turbo and the crank case vent valve trying to eliminate the oil burning, no luck. Rf air spring blew, replaced that. LR air spring blew, replaced that. Oil filter housing gasket leaked. Replaced that. Rear main seal was leaking. Re and re tranny and replaced that. Transmission slipping on slight declines. Replaced TCC solenoid, gaskets fluid and filter. No luck, needs tranny. Control unit in the rear got water in it now rear lights work mostly, check message on dash. Needs the control unit. Repaired water leak. Replaced thrust arm bushings. Front brakes. Replaced the oil cooler seals and de carboned the valves and intake manifolds. Large job. I’m into it for an additional 6k. As a mechanic who can save money on repairs this SUV has pushed me to the limit all in an attempt to have a large fuel efficient SUV to carry tools and gear. There is more I’ve replaced but can’t remember. And there are other things wrong with it. I’ve owned a lot of cars. But this has got to be the worst vehicle I have ever owned. I will never buy another Mercedes as long as I live. BMW has its share of issues but the GL320 takes the cake.
That sounds like a lemon.... I know somebody that owns a GL500 and their air suspension has failed twice in 6 months of their ownership... These cars are lemons!
Had one of these back in the day. Every weekend I spent fixing it. From air suspension, to diesel leaks, transmission issues etc it was the worst car I ever had. Couldn’t agree more with Hoovie.
They bought it with 100k for a fraction of its original price and put a additional 100k miles on it yet are surprised that it has problems. They bought a problematic vehicle in a effort to impress people they will never meet by driving a vehicle that they couldn't afford to buy new.
Yea, thats about it with people... Thats propably why my dad buys his cars at 5000 to 10000 miles and sells them cars at about 120000 miles (200000 km over here)
Finally my knowledge as a europoean tech comes in handy! The OM642 is one of the most popular Mercedes engines over here, and it’s pretty reliable Check the fuel return lines on the injectors, they have little o rings which fail and it causes big diesel leaks! And it’s a cheap fix
Mercedes are just Chryslers with a different badge in terms of quality. The Daimler-Chrysler era was horrid for quality for both MB and Chrysler but it never changed after.
"It still gets over 20MPG on the highway..." Yes...well, a properly working GL 320CDI should get around 35mpg on the highway when doing around 70-75mph...
@@badbooking3221 When doing 115km/h (72mph) in the GL 320 CDI I was getting 7.1 to 7.3l/100km, which puts it at around 35mpg (US). Which, frankly speaking, is pretty poor for a 3l turbo-diesel. All the reviews of that car in Europe didn't just slam it for poor consumption values but tore it to shreds over the entire drive-train for all sorts of shortcomings. The GL 320CDI is an unmitigated disaster from start to finish but 20mpg on the highway is absolutely awful even for this turd of a car.
I have over 150,000 on my 2014 GL 350. Only Brakes and tires of course Amsoil oil and filter changes. Best vehicle I've ever owned and a pleasure to drive. Average 30 mi per gallon on the highway. Tows just about anything I want to put behind it. In about 20,000 mi I'm going to have the timing chain replaced just for general maintenance. Maybe I just got lucky but I would buy it again in a minute.
I think the Wizard had a video on different Mercedes, and the W164 was one of the good ones. I never owned a X164 but I think they ate great, and there are solutions to fix most of their problems reasonably. Also OM642 is a great engine, and there’s a lot of them over many years!
I actually worked at the plant where this was built, and where the new GL, and C classes are built. The way that plant is run is absolutely crazy. You would not believe how poorly it is run, and the amount of problems the cars have before they are even sold to dealers. The reason I got a job there in the first place is because they built 50,000+ cars that couldn't be sold due to the fact they didn't have parts to finish them because they constantly switch suppliers. It happens every single year supposedly.
Oil filter housing, vacuum pump, oil cooler, PCV were all leaking oil on my OM642. Still have a stubborn leak drilping off my AC compressor. Maybe it's the oil filter housing again....
When I took mine off I thought to myself "what a hideously complicated design. Why not just cast in a spin on oil filter? Or just a single gasket 1 piece housing?" This engine is needlessly complicated. Oil filter housing looks like an afterthought.
@@erikkovacs3097 just did those oil filter housing gaskets this past weekend, was just thinking that myself, why didn't they just cast it all as one piece? lmao. it probably would have cost less. classic German engineering.

The M112 engine came from East Germany and the 722.6 transmission from Austria. Both are bullet proof. From 1998 to 2002, there were over two thousand design changes to the ML. Are these cars SO bad in the US? The GL are'nt the best mercedes here in germany too, but they hold up quite well, and I see them driving around every day. So true. After 30+ years of Germans I bought my first Japanese car in 2012 an discovered this 'reliability' thing people told me about. I am never going back.
If you want to buy a German SUV, go get something Japanese or Korean instead. Your wallet will thank you later. Heck, get an Acura or a Genesis if you want it to be fancy.
They are pretty bulletproof cars actually, OM642 is used in all the Sprinter Dodge and Mercedes Vans you see driving around delivering stuff. There are a few problematic areas but timing chains are definitely not common, same applies to transfer case (the fix is new case at around 3-7grand or an $80 Borg chain to fix stretched old ones due to massive torque they output). I have had to rebuild my turbo and did so for $160 as a DIY job. So in other words worst Mercedes for Hoovie, best/easiest one for the Wizard :) I own an ML320 CDI same year as this GL but with regular suspension. It is a true workhorse and continues to work like a fine piece of german engineering! 200K miles later. I will run that car into the ground or 1 million miles whichever comes first! Sidenote Hoovie if you decide to keep, add the Brabus D6 (III) package! For the little money you can get a used one for, you will then have 272 hp and 440 trq :D
I had one Ml W166 with om642 worst car ever... timming chain was stretched, injector issues electronics etc am so glad i sold mine , not only is unreliable but the engine does not have room to work you have to pull apart half engine to change the fuel filter or something simple as a sensor .

Try to look at the fuel lines coming from and too the fuel filter, over time they get cooked and have tiny cracks that spray fuel like that. Just put the ignition in on position and don't start the engine and after a few seconds you will see the lines from the tank inflated from the pressure the pump is building. Just repeat on - lock ignition with a 30sec delay in lock position to bulid enough pressure to spot the leak. But don't start the engine and leave it to idle if u got fuel on the exhaust and dpf because if unlucky it decides it needs a regeneration, even in idle it will bring exhaust gas temperature between 250-500°C and in hot days even 800 degrees witch may ignite fuel and oil or even dry grass ! . That isn’t reliable at all. People who buy German cars amaze me. A fairly reliable car is 130k miles without any major mechanical faults. A reliable car is 150, a very reliable is 170, and a Honda is 200.
I have a 2011 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 that is currently approaching 160 k miles, and the only repair I’ve had to do was replacing the DIS system’s control knob.
@@Powderlover1 my point was it’s at 90 no issues no air suspension bs since 1 went out In 2016. The air suspension stuff was mostly resolved for the 2010 refresh. Vaporized diesel is explosive, and it vaporizes at fairly low temperatures - a little over a hundred degrees. So having an engine or exhaust system with diesel pouring onto it is a problem.
@@JBSibley Youre right at like 100 F ( 38 C ) diesel will start to vaporize and is usually an issue with no ventilation or confined spaces are a thing ( Like a diesel storage tank ) which isn't the case with an automobile there's lots of venting to atmosphere and places to escape not to mention fuel vapors are heavier than air , however I don't know how I would feel about firing it up in a garage on hot summers day with the garage door closed and the right atmospheric conditions but the Molotov Cocktail is a far stretch but diesel isn't good for rubber / plastics and that should be the biggest concern .
I believe it went to common rail injection at that point. You've got extremely high fuel pressure I believe over 25,000 PSI. Even a small pinhole leak someplace is going to make a hell of a mess. I would imagine even the lift pump side on the low pressure side could make a hell of a mess, probably has a decent flow rate and some type of return system for unused fuel.
Finally looked it up. It was in fact an I5 diesel in the 1978-80 300SD. According to Wikipedia, "The OM617 engine family is a straight-5 diesel automobile engine from Mercedes-Benz used in the 1970s and 1980s... It was sold in vehicles from 1974 to 1991. The OM617 is considered to be one of the most reliable engines ever produced with engines often reaching over 1,000,000 km (620,000 mi) without being rebuilt."
Oddly we don’t have nearly as much reliability issues with modern Mercs and BMWs as you guys in the US claim to have. Here diesels are mostly regarded as very reliable cars and parts for used ones are readily available as spares from crash damaged vehicles. Just avoid official dealerships for parts of vehicles over say 10 years as the residual value is to low to justify the cost of most of those cars.
I had a European 10 yr old version of this. 1st year perfect. 2nd everything went wrong. Get this as an example... The high beam was always coming on it's own. The Merc dealer said here's the problem replaced the stalk at the steering column at $700. It worked for about 10 miles. Went back to the dealer $700 poorer and I said same problem. The dealer said we don't know. Here's where the conversation gets surreal. ME: You're Merc dealers. Merc made the car. You don't know what the problem is? MERC DEALER: No. ME: What? You made the car! You're telling me you have no clue as to what the problem is and can't fix it? MERC DEALER: Yes. We can't fix it. ...[Me a month later..... ...sells car... sure everything works fine.... ]
I own one of these, and I have to fundamentally disagree. Although mine is not the CDI. It's a 550. But it has $221,000 miles on it and is driven every single day. I commute from Idaho to Utah in it on a weekly basis, I consider it to be one of the most reliable modern Mercedes there are. I've never had a problem with the air suspension or the adaptive dampers and find it incredibly simple to work on I call it my German Tahoe.
