I'm am overly moved with your videos, being so young, pure and innocent. You were chosen for this and I pray that you continue to ministry and the messages that you deliver are heard, received and more are called to his flock. I just hope that I can get to this level in my own life and can attest to the same before God and others.

Being incarnated means like being subject to time and space. Having said that, it is mind-provoking to me, why God chose that particular moment in history, some 2000 years ago. Why not sooner? Why not later? There must be a reason. I tend to believe that an earlier incarnation possibly would have met a population that wasn't ready yet. The Old Testament is not only metaphorical. There's history in it too. So some human development and preparation took place before Jesus was born. The Old Testament tells us about, seen from a christological point of view. There was a bond between God and his people. The covenant. The law. Couldn't it be so that Jesus was born at the moment the covenant was ready for its next step? The step from a temple of stone to the incarnated temple that is God himself? As for that I do see the incarnation as Gods expanded act towards his flock, making it clear that all flocks were God's and not belonged to some strange deity. What his first flock and all other flocks do have in common is sin. So yes, it is redemption that I see as a reason for the incarnation. What if Adam and Eve had not sinned. It's hard to tell and very hypothetical, but in line with the next question: Will we, once in Paradise again, still have the freedom of sinning, like had Adam and Eve? Obviously the Paradise was another state of being than is the earth as we know it. Committing a sin in paradise can't mean anything else than ripping oneself out of Paradise. Adam and Eve were put out of paradise. Was it a punishment? Or was it rather an amazing grace to find our road back, which only is possible with the help of the Holy Trinity?
I think once we're are in Heaven, we no longer have the "desire" to sin, as Satan is there no longer, no one to tempt us. We are no longer in the flesh. And in Heaven everything is perfect. It doesn't mean we don't have free will, it just means everything we desire is Holy, thus there is no more betrayal or unholy acts. My two cents :)
@@CommandoCo I think I do agree with you. But it is written that we will arise in the flesh. After our resurrection we won't be "spirits" (as are angels), but like Jesus we will arise "in the flesh", but yeah, a flesh in which is no sin anymore. Yet, as I believe there will be freedom (because love only goes together with freedom. I take it that God doesn't want us to be God-worshipoping puppets. What would be the joy of that?)

Our communion with Christ started with His incarnation. For the first time, the people of his time could see Him with their eyes, touch Him with their hands, listen to His voice with their ears. Our communion with Him began then. Cradled in his Mother's arms, he could not stretch His arms out to touch His Creation. He made Himself vulnerable and trusted His Mother and father. The Nativity is so important, so central to the Franciscan perspective on God's love and revelation and his desire to communion with us. Thank you Father Casey, Peace and Joy ! JC, OFS.

I was raised Roman Catholic and it has been my faith all my life. As a child I wanted to be holy like my Mother. I love the sacraments and try and live a good life. There is so much sin in this world. I want to walk humbly and be God’s servant.
It seems to me both very moving and completely logical that God, though complete in Himself, should nonetheless need something other than Himself to love. This is why he created the cosmos, living things and, finally and supremely, creatures "in His image." It follows that He wouldn't be able to love His creation completely from without, so He had per force to descend into it and become part of it. Thank you for explaining this. I try to think about these things, but guidance, especially from someone with such deep faith, understanding and wisdom, is a great help. Thank you for making these videos.

I have heard the same argument before and that's the interpretation that the Supernatural series took. However, I do not believe that claim holds. God is perfect love and in perfect communion with Himself. True love shares its goodness, and in the beginning it was just God. Though there are three persons, it is still God. Opening His heart, this sharing of love ended up with the creation of the universe. Then, God saw that the universe was so beautiful and so good that he created us, humans, who could understand in a more complex and sophisticated way how beautiful it is, to be able to share that goodness and beauty. I always look back at a time when I was in tenth grade. I had a crush on someone and every time I bought something for myself, I felt empty due to the materialism and would have rather shared all I had with that person. Love does not keep to oneself, but it moves outward. At that point, it only makes sense that the Lord did create the universe and us. Now the part he accused, that He created us solely to honor himself. I already disputed the "solely" part. To dispute another component of this, let me just say, I'm willing to bet no one probably likes to be taken advantage of, exploited, or for someone to give their all, their entire beings, for the ones they to not even acknowledge them or be ungrateful. This is an invisible expectation we keep; it's an assumption that we will be treated fairly and justly. I don't see what's wrong with that. In fact, God even went so far as to give us free will to choose to love Him. He doesn't want to force it upon us, and seeing how Heaven will be an eternity spent with God, seeing that as a prerequisite makes sense. From marriage, we know four key components to love: free, total, fruitful, and faithful. God has certainly shown us all of those and given us the ability and opportunity to reciprocate. With the Jesus part, even without the interpretation of the Incarnation presented in this video, the traditional view would also hold up against that claim. Jesus came to us to bring us back to God, to give us freedom from our sins, served the poor, sick, and needy His entire life, and died for us. He might or might not believe the claims of the Church, but to me that does not sound like a selfish mentality because during Jesus' entire ministry, it was all about us. This video gives a new way to look at the Incarnation and that is a great thing. It is like a painting. There are many components to it, many ways to look at it, and when each part is carefully inspected, one will find beauty and goodness, and each only serves to reveal the overall beauty and goodness of the whole. This is how God loves us so much...the manifestation of His love for man. But man did in return love God? What our world has manifested nowadays is our response to God's love...So, my only prayer is that God would grant His gift of "Unconditional Love" to all man so that man would love Him above all things and love his fellow man the way God loved us...For it is only by the Grace and Mercy of God, man can do the same thing God had manifested to us, since all Good Things are only coming from God....no one else in this world...

I've been thinking about the incarnation a lot, because I now know a fair bit of theology around God the creator and I've learned so much about Jesus. And even though I know how the trinity works, I just can't wrap my head around how and why. In the wise words that Fr. Casey shared with us on the reaction channel: it would be a disservice to reduce God's being to fit our understanding. God gives us the answers we need when we need them. So until that moment, one can only wonder.
Maybe you cant 'wrap your head around how and why' ( 'God became a man' as the above poster claims) isnt TRUE! f you believe in the Holy bible, then show me ONE verse that says 'God became a man'. I all the bibles I have read it says over and over again that 'Godsent his only begotten SON' into the world. If 'God became a man' then who blessed jesus at his baptism and said "This is my SON the beloved I HAVE APROVED HIM"? ( Matt 3:17). Jesus is God's SON, Not God.
I thought about this a lot and thought I was a heretic because you don't hear it often in churches. You hear way more about the redemption side than about the "revealing" side. I truly hope the orthodox churches reunite with catholicism. Both would benefit greatly from each other. I posted on another video that my stumbling block was evolution and that a video on its theological meaning would be nice. Fr. Casey, This is an important concept that brings up a lot of questions. Why did he have to die for our sins? I completely accept that Christ coming was not just a rescue plan. That is too small. I accept that his coming was so that we could know God through him. Why did he have to suffer and die on the cross? Couldn't we have found that intimate connection to God without his suffering? It wasn't just for payment for our sins. Why would God need such a payment? Will you cover this in another video, please?
It comes from a tradition from the time of Moses. In Egypt, on the tenth plague, God would take the firstborns of all the Egyptians in retribution for all the innocent Israelite children who were killed. The Israelites were instructed to make a mark above the door with the blood of a lamb and God would pass over that house onto the next. After all that was said and done and the Israelites were freed, this event would start one of ancient Israel's traditions called Passover where they would sacrifice a lamb to take away the sins of the world. If I remember correctly, this however wasn't something definitive, and this action was limited in its ability to take away the sin. When Jesus was crucified and died for us, He became the fulfillment of the Passover and is called the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. If we believe in Him, we are given freedom for our sins. That is why (most) Christians don't celebrate Passover and as Catholic Christians we have the Mass. During which, Jesus' sacrifice is being offered up again to take away our sins. There are arguments that Jesus made one sacrifice and it was a perfect sacrifice, as He was God, the spotless lamb. However, there are two components to the sacrifice: the killing of the lamb and the offering. Jesus died around 33 AD and we continue to remember His sacrifice and offer it up. This is in accords with the Last Supper, which He began the Sacrament of the Eucharist and told us to do that in memory of Him. To address some of your other questions. Adam and Eve's sin was substantial. In trying to elevating themselves to gods, they separated themselves from God, and so too were the rest of humanity. Israel was turning away from God, during the few last books of the Old Testament, it is prophets telling the people to turn back to God. Then, we see in the Pharisees that they were so hung up that when God came, many of his own did not even recognize or believe Him. So, He came to bring us back to Himself, but that means something would need to be done about our sin. God is perfect, He is without sin, and there is no sin in Heaven (Purgatory exists for those who have fully accepted God, but still need to be purifed from some our imperfections), our sin is what separates us from God so in order to be in perfect communion with Him, all of that would need to be taken away. His sacrifice for us was very necessary, but like Fr. Casey said, not the only purpose of the Incarnation. So how can we reconcile His suffering and death? I think it does bring a level of intimacy to know our Savior suffered before us for us. In this regard, when we are in the midst of pain and agony, we know that God is with us all the way. I once heard from my priest who I believe got it from St. Faustina if I remember correctly, that due to this reason humans actually have a different level of intimacy to God that the angels don't have. Due to them being purely spiritual beings, they don't suffer the way we do, so our Lord is present for us in a different way than He is for His angels. Hopefully this helps! I know it's very long, but theology has quite a lot to summarize 😅. A video could as well supplement this.
Very well said Fr Casey. Unfortunately, in arguments offered by our Protestant brothers, their belief system is based on limiting the scope of the Incarnation of God. I wish more catholics understood the Incarnation as you do. In what you have said in just 4 minutes is a summary of 2000 years of christian theology, worship and prayer in order to fully appreciate god’s love for his human creatures and his creation. Protestants do focus on redemption, because the other traditions ignore it. Some protestants ignore Christ's sanctifying work in creation, to their peril. But most ex addicts have experienced His work and testify about it and their testimonies are a regular part of Protestant Christian worship.
I think God became Man to have an even closer relationship with us. We believe Jesus is God in the flesh. Imagine then, being God and not having physical closeness with His creation, He then gets to be embraced by His Mother, work in the carpenter's shop with his foster father. Play with friends! Cuddle a puppy or kitten or see the birds, not as we see them, but as He sees them. Imagine gathering to pray, to shake hands, to cup a child's face. To eat good bread, to smell flowers, to see the stars from His creation's point of view. To sleep under a blanket. All those human tangibles we don't pay that much attention to, He experienced and cherished as human experience. I agree with you Father, if the world had been perfect, I think Jesus would have come anyway.

Um. You did not really sell it. I do believe one can, in a sense, sell their soul, but it doesn’t work like that. Just by saying that you do something doesn’t mean you do it. Words are words and only become manifest through action.
Logically, this doesn't make since. If sin hadn't existed and we kept the convenants, we would be eternally aware of the presence of God and we would be sinless. There would be no distinction between a normal man and christ. Why would God even want to incarnate himself into what he is already present in?
If this is fundamental to the Franciscan tradition, then I think this tradition has its finger on the pulse of the heart of God. I have a reformed background, and am thankful for it. But I do think there can be a fixation on the crucifixion to an unhealthy degree that it overshadows the incarnation.

I do get that Marshall has got some pride, he was off-base with the SSPX stance maybe, he did block people himself then complain when Bishop Barron blocked him and is indifferent with his former co-host Timothy Gordon but on lots of other issues, his stances are solid and reasonable. He asks the viewers to pray the rosary daily and read the Bible on his videos, stand up to the mob trying to destroy the statues and Churches, do not vote for the party of death. I am not a traditionalist because I don't have access to TLM neither do I approve on what some trads say that TLM is the only valid Mass. I went and showed my local gospel gazette experiment to our parochial vicar yesterday. Part of it was a little trivia on how to say the sign on the cross in Latin. I was upset when that priest told me to write it off because he said it was irrelevant to people, saying that even the seminarians with them right now don't even emphasize on Latin anymore. Something is deeply troubling here. Didnt Pope Benedict XVI say that the liturgy should at least have some use of Latin? We DO NOT need softness and complacency anymore. Rigidity in its proper place is good and I believe it will help save the Church because it was meant to be tough, not meant to be politically correct. We need the honest, no-nosense gospel. Staying in safe spaces away from guys too rigid like Marshall will not solve the problem. Its more like just running away from them. That is not a priestly/manly thing to do, clergy or laymen alike.“
I only learned about the Franciscan view recently. In its light, if you consider the dominant western view, incarnation for redemption, it belittles God. It implies God didn't know what would happen in His creation and so had to fix it when it went wrong. The Franciscan and Orthodox view is evident when Jesus says "When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” (
I think Hans Jonas' essay "The Concept of God After Auschwitz: A Jewish Perspective" might be an interesting read. His ideas are not identical to what is presented here, but Jonas arrives at almost a Whiteheadian outlook (although he is critical of Whitehead for not taking death/loss/suffering seriously enough in his view) by speculating on why suffering exists if God exists. I think the theosis approach, Jonas' approach, and Whitehead's approach while all different make much more sense to me than some of the more typical answers given to questions about the incarnation and the problem of evil.

It's a little odd how Christmas is the best way we have to connect with people. It's the one time that the Christian message seems to operate on people who are from colder climates or whose backgrounds pick it up, like surfing Santas in Australia. I believe you stated that God created Jesus but Jesus was not created. We are created. Jesus is consubstantial with the Father. Let’s not fall into the error of Arianism. I agree with this teaching, for although Jesus was born to be sacrificed, the Second Person is still God and cannot be bound by any external fate that is not His, for God is boundless by nature.
Honest question though; St. Paul says Jesus was the "firstborn of all CREATION", yet in the Creed, we say that the Son was "begotten NOT CREATED". I would really like some clarification please.

Plan a, then plan b? No, God knew and knows everything. He knew we would sin, even before He said Let There Be Light. It was always His plan to to come into the physical to create that pathway to the eternal. That His Creation would become His Bride, The Queen of Heaven, to Serve, and Rule, and Reign, and Be One in Being with Him forever.

Not that the Catholic doctrine is OK with it. The Pope didn't say homosexual sexual relationships were not sinful, just that he's OK with non Christian gays/lesbians having legal protection in a civil union (healthcare, for example, having days off when the partner is sick at the hospital). It's an evangelistic change: before him the Vatican didn't support anything related to make sure its moral position was clear; now it wants to send a different message, that the Church cares for these people and will lead them to Christ by love and not by being the most stubborn in a cultural war.
Huh, this is a good way to think about it. However, I do find the idea that God created us bc he wanted there to be something other than Him to be slightly concerning, since it might come off as a bit selfish; how can He have the well-being of everyone in mind if He created us just so that He wasn’t alone?
I’m not sure how you come to selfish... it’s the exact opposite. God created so that God would have something to share with. It’s all for the sake of giving love to another.

Respectfully, I do not agree. According to my learning Jesus would not have become incarnate if we had not sinned. We would not have needed it. For all the reasons stated, the barrier was sin (or God's own will of revelation). But from our sin God has brought an even greater good.

Can you imagine the Almighty creator of the universe having his nappy changed? being suckled by his mother? getting tired? hungry?. It is completely ridiculous!. All you need to do is let Jesus HIMSELF tell you that "God sent forth his ONLY BEGOTTEN SON into the World" John 3:17. And at his baptism, listen to God HIMSELF say "THIS IS MY SON". Clear now?
Creation was divine at the beginning. Each step of creation was declared good, sometimes very good. As you know, God is described as walking in the Garden with Adam and Eve. So, if Jesus' mission was primarily self revelation, communion and divinization and not redemption, why did He come at all? God could have revealed Himself more and more in the Garden, perhaps He would have, except for sin. Sin happened and made it necessary for Jesus to come and sanctify mankind and creation again. (In a way, God's mercy would never be known if mankind had not sinned. So even our sin glorifies God who reveals Himself as merciful.) You admit that your tradition does not emphasize redemption, but Holy Scripture does. All the Gospels, the Epistles, even the Revelation talk openly about the redeeming work of Christ. This is His first steps in making creation holy again. He sheds his blood to atone, to cleanse, to create people anew. Then and only then can they enjoy the ever-unfolding revelation and sanctification of God to His people. Eucharist as a ceremony makes no sense without redemption, because through the Eucharist one "...proclaims the Lord's death until He comes." It is good to emphasize "divinization" since that is being neglected in theology, especially Protestantism today. But both redemption and sanctification are important and when one tries to exclude one of these great foundational truths, one's faith suffers. Its ironic that Roman and Eastern Orthodox traditions, while emphasizing deification over redemption, still build temples and altars, "holy places" when all of creation is being sanctified by our Great King. The first Christians celebrated the Eucharist at an ordinary table in an ordinary home. It was the gathered community which brought and sanctified the elements,. It is not relics, graves, bishops or altars which sanctify the Eucharist but Christ's presence with His people. "Where two rormore are gathered in my name," Jesus said, "there I am in the midst of them." So, your traditions actually inhibits divinization instead of enhancing Christ's sanctifying work inthe world. You mention that the Orthodox tradition doesn't emphasize redemption, but this is inaccurate. They did not use the phrase "penal substitutionary atonement" like later theologians do but they do regularly praise Christ's substitutionary work in their prayers and liturgies.
"Self revelation, communion, and divination of creation..." Is that the reason for the incarnation? I humbly disagree... God is love. God is, was and has always been and always will be complete... God does not need to reveal Himself to us. God does not need us, His creation. And God does not need communion with us. Whatever God has done to reveal himself to us, including His Incarnation, through our Lord Jesus Christ has been for his selfless, unceasing, merciful love for us...his creatures. Ever since the Fall, Adam did not ask for forgiveness. Man has constantly and consistently turned his back on God as is seen in the Old Testament yet God sees inside our lost and empty souls and wishes us to experience the fullness of his grace and to be one with him... not for His sake but for ours. We are like lost, blind children that need someone to guide us to wholeness and oneness with God and God is grabbing us by the hand and showing us the way to safety. That's why Jesus came. For us, for a chance for us to have God enter our souls not for his benefit but for ours. God's grace feeds our souls and provides everlasting nourishment. The incarnation is all about the redemption of Man. If Adam had feared the Lord and understood his place and obeyed our almighty God, then Eden would persist and be a holy place with earthly and spiritual beings to this day and God would have no need to show us the Way the Truth the Life through Jesus Christ because we as humans would already be fully in God's grace. It's precisely because God is love that he gives us the opportunity to come back to him through Jesus Christ...our redeemer.
"...God wanted to Love..." NO! God IS Love. 'Plan B was to redeem us...' NO! God knew before the creation of the heavens and the earth that Satan and the demons would rebel and fall and that the first humans would sin. The Love of God the Father for the Son, the Love of God the Son for the Father, Incarnated the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the womb of the Theotokos. God wanted us to share in His Divinity, YES! I believe one of the Church Fathers said, "God Loves us so much it is as if we are His Gods." God doesn't ruminate in self admiration or self contemplation, He washes our feet. He's an apprentice to Joseph and an obedient child for decades. He heals like a doting physician. He suffers, anguishes, is tortured, humiliated and dies for us. Maybe God created because he wants more beings to experience goodness. I'm suspicious of atheists who ask, "Wouldn't eternity in heaven be boring?" It implies they've never had a moment in life that they wished could last forever, maybe that they hate life itself. It doesn't seem unlikely to me that people who live on garbage dumps their whole lives experience at least one moment they wish could last forever. We certainly suffer (no doubt because of sin) some an agonizing lamentation, but Christ's example cures pure hopelessness. God is super abundant love that cannot help but be diffusive. I've heard people say absolute power corrupts absolutely. The One Being Who has absolute power is absolutely incorruptible. I believe Gilbert Keith Chesterton said something like, 'No one needs to be told God is Great. We all instinctually know that. We need to be told, "God is humble."'
If Adam & Eve never ate the apple, there would be no Original Sin and humans would be immortal, so this world would've never been "fallen", thus it would be a pleasant place to incarnate.
Of course, God the father fully expected Adam and Eve to jump around and exercise and feel their oats in their bones and look up at god with admiration. Adam and Eve asked questions about who they were and about what this creation is. When God spoke to Adam and Eve as it is written the Genesis, please note the God is speaking with an amazing delicacy and and compassion and love. The wrath of God as god opens the gates of the garden of eden is missing.

It's really not news. He was speaking as a private person, sharing an opinion to a secular media source. If he said it in a homily or wrote it in an encyclical it would be worth talking about (although not binding).

I think that God new that humans are sinners and always planned to come and change things by showing humans how they should act. I think God wanted to show humans the path to heaven and salvation in a way that would stay with them throughout the ages while not making people follow religion out of fear. therefore he came as a human and sacrificed himself for us. I also think that his sacrifice saved us perhaps in a way that had nothing to do with divinity. in Rome dying for what you believed in was venerated and it would have inspired many converts that wouldn't have otherwise converted.
The word 'incarntion' is NOT found in the bible! The testimony of Jesus himself & his apostles is clear,. I believe what they said about Jesus rather than theologian philosophers! Jesus said "I came down from heavan" " The word BECAME flesh" "He (Christ) EMPTIED himself". "Though he was rich HE BECAME poor". All these words indicate The Son totally, completely CAME DOWN FROM HEAVAN TO THIS EARTH. He didnt merely 'put on' a robe of flesh ie the 'incarnation. This doctrine is from greek mythology and not the bible! Jesus begged the Father "Glorify me with the GLORY I HAD"! ( John 6:58. John 1:14. Phil 2:7. 2 Cor 8:9, Dont read in the KJV it sidesteps the true meaning as a 'trinity' biased translation. all 57 translators missused the original greek to give the wrong slant to the words! )

Honestly even I thought that imagine a God born rejected...lives a life of utter poverty...goes through a lot of pain because his own people don't believe him....then dies the most cruel death....and here we are insensitive to the crucifix...and claiming to be great Christians...But may be with that he achieved or saved few souls...
2,000 years later after Jesus Christ suffered being scourged, crucified, death and resurrection and people are still this ignorant and indifferent....🤦 Three days of darkness are near and God will destroy those who blaspheme His Holy Son Jesus Christ.
God’s love is that he has too much respect for humans. Human creatures have a free life with God’s love hard wired in his brain. God wants humans to seek him out of a humanity that god designed. Of course, humans in his make up reflects all of creation. The Incarnation joins directly into this mix.
