Pesci and Pacino's performances were by far the best in the film. I found DeNiro's to be about average for this type of film. He wasn't bad at all, but nothing about his performance really moved me. It was just a standard DeNiro peformance: quiet, introspective, sullen. Nothing you wouldn't expect from him in that role. The one major flaw was DeNiro's body movements during scenes of violence. He moved like an old man in a middle aged man's body. It was really jarring and took you out of the film. It would have been better if they had just shot those scenes from behind the character and used a stunt double.

These comments are getting me fired up, cuz this film was SOOOO good, perhaps Pacino and Pescis best performance. My only critique is the jarring movement of DeNiro when beating up the shopkeeper, I think the critiques of his acting are unnecessary. And I definetly think the plot is better and more complex than goodfellas. Not to mention the legendary ‘you’re late’ scene which to me is the new ‘funny how’ scene

That scene did stand out to me as bad stunt work. I rewound and watched it a couple more times surprised by bad it looked in comparison to the rest of the film. In the Godfather Sonny beating Connie's husband in the street wasn't perfect either but I don't think it took away from it.

Are you kidding? Having a cast of greats dressed up in cgi was disgraceful. Scorsese should have put in a bunch of new bloods instead of dusting off those cobwebs. He might look down on joyrides but is a house of mirrors any different?

I love this movie so much. I tend to hate modern movies, but this one really was so great. Sheeran was dealt a tough hand in life, I think his culpability lessens somewhat as his army days made him so jaded to human life. He must make his final confession, but he is a tragic figure, who tried to navigate his life, but he forgot the eternal, thinking only of the now.

My biggest issue with The Irishman when I first saw it, was that I couldn't comprehend why Frank didn't admit to his guilt at the end of the film. He quite clearly is unhappy with how his life is gonna end (granted, he doesn't feel guilty about everything. As one can tell when he tells his daughter, he did everything for them), it is as clear as day, that he feels guilty about killing Hoffa and there's no reason for him not to express his remorse at this point. But overtime, I've come to think that it's probably just a mentality thing. He wants redemption, but he doesn't want to earn it, he wants it to be given to him. Because he doesn't want to accept and live with the pain of killing one of his closest friends (despite him doing it passively anyway), he thinks by repressing his guilt, it won't eat at him so much.
@RenegadeFilm86
@RenegadeFilm86 3 года назад
I agree that it probably is a mentality thing. I think that he was so enveloped in the mob lifestyle and the culture of not ratting/ "keeping your mouth shut" that it was all he knew and even after everyone else died, he still couldn't change. The generation he was from with the unspoken edict of a man suppressing his feelings and refusing to show any kind of vulnerability may play a part in it as well. Going out on a limb here, but perhaps it was the conflict between being loyal to Russell and Hoffa continuing to play out even though both were dead. Or just a conflict between redemption and his loyalty to the mafia. Just some thoughts. Thanks for watching!

Not true but its a good attempt at making a goodfellas part two. Not many people can do the impossible and remake the magic of the 90s films. Terminator failed, trainspotting.......ehhhm . Right forget that. Star wars .....lol. I forgot the rest but they all failed. Oh ya The matrix had big boots to fill even back in the 2000s. I think Scorsese could do it with Aviator but its not a 90s film. I was stunned when reading of hugh....(.the aviator) his life i couldn't believe was not only fact but only half of his life. Amazing man . Richest in the world. Anyway nice video and great movie. I can't believe I never knew Scorsese was so far ahead of any other director. I loved some of his movies and never knew he directed them

I also look at The Irishman as a kind of sequel or follow up to Goodfellas but I also see it in a way as a prequel or introduction to Casino. Goodfellas begins with relatively small time crooks (who got lucky at the airport) while Casino has the mob running high roller gambling throughout Las Vegas. The Irishman is the bridge between how the mob went from small time to big time as an ongoing business. The video brings up the topic of the punishment for the main character in these Scorsese mafia movies. In Goodfellas, Henry Hill had to move where he is not able to get good pasta and sauce. Not much of a punishment at all which fit into several crime films at the time where the anti-hero just gets a slap on the wrist. At the end of Casino, Sam Rothstein sees his part of the mafia empire in Las Vegas collapse, which was a loss of millions of dollars in income and property. His ex wife also died though it’s unclear how much he loved her. In the Irishman, the punishment is more personal. Frank Sheeran has been rejected by his surviving family. He will die a lonely old man.

Your analyses of the sopranos are spot on. And i feel you also communicate the true intended meaning of the irishman, but your brilliance in anaylsis is wasted on this just awful awful film. The performances totally sucked and lacked any of the charms of goodfellers and casino. Plus the film was hindered by a woke political correctness in language caused by the new hollyweird. I am a huge fan of this genre, and a huge fan of your channel but we all need to face the facts that the genius charming spirits had already left the bodies of martin, deniro and pacino before the making of this film.

I loved The Irishman and Pacino is phenomenal in anything he does but in my opinion he was miscast as Jimmy Hoffa. I feel Jack Nicholson’s portrayal in the 1992 film “ Hoffa” was much more accurate judging from news reels I’ve seen of the actual Jimmy Hoffa.
@brandonb.5304
@brandonb.5304 Год назад
Eh, I felt Nicholson's Hoffa was too showy, too polished. Pacino's portrayal felt more like a real man dealing with real world issues and real emotions. I think that's one of Nicholson's flaws as an actor (as great as he is) is that his performances feel a little too self aware, like he knows he's acting and is attempting to show off.

I think what Scorsese wanted to portray through The Irishman was The Death of Gangster films and that the Golde age of Hollywood in which he grew up has gone, so that's why he wanted to cast legendary actors to make this Mob movie. Furthermore, The Irishman meant Joe Pesci's return, who was disappeared from Acting for a long time.

Ok so I'm gonna say something that makes no sense at first....but hear me out! Goodfellas is the greatest movie of all time, but Casino is better than Goodfellas! LET ME EXPLAIN! Goodfellas reaches a much broader audience and is easier to enjoy by the masses, where Casino is a more niche movie for fans of Mafia movies. With that being said, it breaks my heart how underrated the Irishman is

the irishman is his weakest gangster film - de niro gives his worst performance in a scorsese film - hes done this in many other throw away films but not for scorsese - the de-aging process already looks poor - why they couldnt have given younger actors a chance - like de niro was given in godfather 2 - pacino is an enjoyable ham - pesci and graham are the only performances of note

I cannot understand what people like about this film? I fell asleep 3 separate times trying to finish it. What a slog.. With a meandering story that goes nowhere. Boring, repetitive. Terrible acting by DeNiro. Gratuitous shooting scenes that are poorly done, and do not add to the story in any way..Don't forget the obvious worst thing..the age regressing cgi! It looks terrible, awkward, and doesn't work with an old actor's movement. I hated this movie. Scorsese's best? Definitely not..

The 2nd half of the movie. There’s no CGI de-aging. It’s just Pacino, DeNiro and Pesci acting flawlessly. So I tell people who think the movie is long and boring and are distracted by the CGI. Just skip ahead to the Chili Dog scene/Pacino gets out of jail. Because from that point onward I think the movie is perfect. The 1st half? Yeah, it’s just a worse version of Goodfellas, lots of jump cuts, lots of worse music, action not as good. Harder to follow.

Here are the reasons why I liked the movie. 1. You can feel the cultural and social changes of America through the film 2. It deals with the truth of gangster life, the parts that people don’t normally talk about. The Theme isn’t about life in the mob. It’s about making wrong decisions in life and it catching up to you when it’s too late to change. The last act of the film is the true masterpiece. 3. The acting is so subtle and masterful. Look at pesci’s acting in goodfellas vs the Irishman. He is so bombastic and over the top. In Irishman he is very reserved and so subtle in his communication. This movie hits me with nostalgia for my grandfathers generation, while also forcing me to face the fact that I may be making wrong decisions In my life, leading me down the wrong path. I don’t want to end up like frank. 4. Thus movie is a meditation. It’s drawn out. Long. It forces you to think and focus on and engage in it. I thought that deniro’s acting was bad. That he sounded like an old man throughout the whole movie. But then I learned that the real frank had a stutter. And when I saw video recordings of frank sheeran, I saw how spot on De Niro was. The only real weak parts I saw in it were the de-ageing and the bay of pigs segment. But about the de-ageing, I see the movie as franks memories. When we think about our younger memories, often we place our current selves in the scene. Thats what I felt with the movie.
