Today, it's iconic. But for a long time, the Lincoln Memorial was incredibly controversial. Vox's Phil Edwards looked into the full story. Read more here: www.vox.com/2016/10/3/13124866...

3:19 Congress wanted to turn the swamp into a park but canon had suggestions of turning it into “garden for the poor”. That sounds like a great reason to oppose putting a monument up for someone who freed hundreds of thousands poor farm workers.

Plus, I don't want to sound rude, because there is a lot of beautiful and visionary architecture in the US, but I really don't think this memorial looks good. It's just so underdone, it looks really out of place. It's like a huge portable toilet with some marble pillars. I live in a small town in Europe and there is a classicist church right next to my house that looks better than this. And that church was bombed three times.

Well yes Spencer poore but the video doesn't seem very nuanced and only shows this one side of him, seems very biased. And corhydron111 agreed, how is the memorial "innovation" same, im in France and there are tens of hundreds of more beautiful monuments and buildings all over the place that show real innovation fpr their time. If anything the Lincoln Memorial is a waste of money (not 2 b rude) which could be a reason for Cannan

I think the video might be stereoscopic, but probably not exactly the right kind for the red/cyan glasses I got lying around (they make (some?) of the text and pointers float, but rob me of color). There are stereoscopic color-filter-combinations that are claimed to be almost unnoticeable with bare eyes, so it might be one of them. if it is it's superfluous, as youtube allows you to adjust the stereoscopy to the glasses you have, if the video is uploaded as stereoscopic.

tubewoodycool Neo-classicism (reviving Ancient Greek and roman architecture) was huge in the 18th century, you can see the same style in a lot of European (especially English) buildings of the period
@jimtuv
@jimtuv 7 лет назад
It is because our political system was designed by men who admired the Greek and Roman system of governance. They design the architecture to acknowledge that.
@Gardehesten
@Gardehesten 7 лет назад
Because of the lack of American architectural history at that point in time. It is a young nation, even younger then. And as mentioned by others here, they admired the old Greek and Roman ways of governance. To me, it's still strange to see new buildings erected in the same style. There are great examples of modern American architecture, that capture your society of present day. Shouldn't it be the point to make a statement of the age the building is built? I'm not a big fan of Neo-classicism in either England nor the US. I'm also glad the memorial didn't turn out as a pyramid hah.

I just had a thought about possible symbolism behind the Lincoln Memorial. Hear me out on this. The building that the big statue of Lincoln is inside is clearly based off of Greek temple style of architecture. This is to represent the view that many had and still have of Lincoln on the surface as almost a deity like figure who was to be revered as such. But going inside you see Lincoln sitting in his chair peaceful yet contemplative. While he is large he is still approachable. You can get pretty close to Lincoln and see the human imperfections in his face. The inscription behind him speaks not of a deity like reverence but a reverence based off of his important impact in saving the union and freeing the slaves. One could even say the size of the statue is reflective of this. He is not a behemoth of a deity figure but a person who's large and important impact on this country is what makes him large in our hearts and minds just as he is in the memorial. The point I'm getting at is that the memorial presents the Building Lincoln is in as one of a God but upon a closer look we see the true Lincoln. We see Abraham Lincoln an American man born as common as everyone else who despite the uphill battles he sometimes faced made enormous impact in the lives of the entire country for the rest of his history and furthermore broke the chains of the oppressed slaves and led them to freedom.

And to think that Frank Gehry once said, *"The Lincoln Memorial is in the form of a Greek temple. What’s that got to do with Lincoln?”* You read that right: The most famous living architect in the world doesn't understand the history of architecture. And we throw millions of dollars at that man to build monuments of his own.

There is, however, a lot of value in the sort of practical utilitarian mindset Cannon had. Are we truly better off for having the Lincoln memorial situated on the National Park rather than a park for the poor? Grand artistic projects like the Lincoln Memorial cost money, and the stance that we should spend money on improving access to basic humans rights (water, food, education, housing) for those who don't have them over magnificent monuments to dead people, however admirable, is legitimate. The Lincoln Memorial was, after all, built during the Gilded Age - a time in which the creation of spectacular works of art, whether monuments or mansions, took precedent over social programs.

Seeing as Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt are on Mount Rushmore, would that be the ultimate memorial for any president? Especially as I've heard some call for Reagan to be added while others call for FDR to be added (taking politics aside, as both had big impacts on their generations, I can see why they are called out)

There's a line between being a visionary and a megalomaniac. To dismiss all skeptics as "lacking vision" blinds oneself to the possibility that it may actually be a bad idea. That said, the Lincoln Memorial was a good idea.
