I wish reviewers would read the manual before reviewing their cars. The MG4 (which I ordered as soon as I'd returned from the test drive!) has steering wheel-mounted climate controls (once you've one-time programmed the shortcut button on the wheel spoke). Then you simply adjust the heating (temperature up/down, fan up/down) without taking your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road. Same with the sound system controls (on the other spoke). So one of the main criticisms of the MG in this piece was in fact erroneous.
I guess the UK is shafted, over here in mainland Europe, VW has 5 years years warranty on all models, and for the battery there is an 8 year / 160 000 km (100 000 mile) warranty on top of that.
@@JuzzlinOSS 5 years for all of those in Estonia. But in case of MB the extra 3 years are not OEM, but provided by local dealer. Very strange indeed that there is so big difference just 70km away. The VAT in Estonia is also 20% and not 24%, so all the cars are even cheaper if you are buying privately. But I heard they want to remove the VAT from all EV's in Finland, then this will no longer be the case.
Not only is the MG £6k cheaper but it looks so much better than the VW, it will appeal to a younger customer because it looks sportier too ! but if I could afford a new electric car I would definitely go for the MG4 and I'm 71.
And it's entirely made in China and owned by the largest Chinese manufacturer SAIC. Volkswagen IDs are also about sourcing of sustainable materials and about the recycling process after the car is broken.
There are 2 programmable buttons on the steering wheel (L+R) you don't have to go into the info screen, one can program climate and say regen can then be adjusted from the steering wheel.
Staggering how far the Chinese have come to provide relatively inspiring and good value EVs, but to be fair the VW ID range is (in my opinion) dreadfully bland where the MG is a distinctive and original design. At least the British connection with the Allegro quartile steering wheel is maintained 😮
Interesting review. BUT, if you are going to criticise the menu system on the MG4's infotainment screen, you MUST mention the two programmable buttons on the steering wheel so you can access parts of the menu with one click. You don't (as far as I am aware) get that on the ID3.
I've lost count of the number of reviewers that have fallen into this trap. But, to be fair, if they are ALL doing it, then it's a failure on MG's part for not making it clearer or obvious.
@@vincentohanlon that's the trouble, although not just VW are guilty. More than ever cars are the equivalent of white goods and since manufacturers are now making cars more of themselves and forcing them on the customers, people are just accepting mediocrity and compromise
It's not an mg, it's fake mg, for fake people. Buying a Chinese mg is showing everyone how much of a loser you are. You can't buy a real car so your happy to sell yourself and everyone around you out. Driving around in your fake shiny mg fake because your pretending to save the planet when all your really doing is funding the most dangerous regime in world history. Your morals are that low that you view yourself as more valuable than the future of democracy. I can't think of anything that deserves more disgust contempt and mockery. Beige people trying to be something they are not and sacrificing freedom for their own greed. Fake people driving around in a fake mg. With their greedy little hands on the wheel looking like the mediocre fake people they are.
The original MG is gone, bankrupted. Now came the new MG, stronger than ever. Of course it is not for everyone, but looks like they are doing very well.
Pity you don't seem to know how to read the manual or do any research before you present, turn the volume down if you think the indicators are too loud, although there are many who cannot hear very well so may be those would like them "loud", also the climate controls etc can be asigned to the toggle buttons on the steering wheel, guess what you don't have to faf about on the screen.
@@grahamsmith7112 True! MG doesn't rival VW, they blow them out of the water. £11,000 more for a car that is on Par with the MG except the VW has slower charging, worse interior, doesn't support V2L and has a 3 year instead of 7 year warranty... yeah they aren't rivalling anyone
Use the buttons on the steering wheel for climate and regen settings on the MG, intuitive and practical, OMG!!! IS SHE FOR REAL!!!!? BIG NO NO RIGHT THERE. Swipe left.
As a German I like the MG way better than the VW. Well, I don't like the VW design and philosophy for a long time... I agree on the bad display controls, but the ID.3's solution isn't any better. It's sensitive touch controls even without backlights!
A good video, though as others have said, both the climate and regen can be accessed and controlled from the steering wheel, and the indicator sound is changed by going into "chimes" in the menu. Time to retake that whole video, I think :)
Has anyone actually driven either car for extended time? I own an ID.3 for over two years and have since tried many other EV's (because I was a bit underwhelmed at first). The more I tested other cars, the more I realize how good the ID.3 is. Yes, it takes some getting used to and there still are some things I would change if I could, but for day-to-day usage the driving dynamics and integration of the assistance systems is unmatched. I am not a VW fanboy and would love to hate it (so I have en excuse to trade it in), but no matter how much cheaper the MG is, from what I've experienced I wouldn't drive it daily even if it was 10k cheaper. It is unpleasant and the assistance systems are so unreliable it is almost dangerous. Anyway: Mine is just another opinion. My advise: try to get whichever car you fancy for a week and live with it rather than testdrive it for an hour or so. You'll be surprised.
Are these prices based on brand new only? - cause a 2022 model Trophy M4 is around £27K with 5K miles but you can pick up a 2022 ID3 Pro Performance around the same price, and it seems like the ID3 has more drive convenience and tech, am I missing something or are the just both incredibly close in comparison? I just don’t feel the M4 blows the ID3 out the park?
It helps if you get more to grips with the cars before reviewing. For example all the moans for settings on the MG4 are on the steering wheel. That's why cars have multifunction steering wheels so you don't have to use the touch screen while driving as that would be dangerous.....
People do obsess about warranties but VW has 8 years on the battery iirc. 3 years on the rest and EV drivetrains are so much simpler than fossilsaur drivetrains. VW has been making legacy cards for a very long time and know how to make quality components. You pay more for quality. I see plenty of 20 plus year old VW's on the roads but time will be the judge of the Chinese version of the MG brand. Like the South Koreans, MG offer the 7 year warranty to invite buyers. It's just marketing and a way to push market share. You pays your money, you makes your choice. For us it was a 12,000 mile 2 year old ID.3 1st for less than any new MG4. Buying new mainstream cars is a rich mugs game.
I'd already bought my MG4 (within the last week) before I saw this review, but I had seen others before I purchased. This review fully endorses the reason for buying the MG - the IG3 doesn't justify the more expensive price tag at all. The MG4 is great to drive - yes it has it's quirks, butt interiror-wise it's a huge improvement on previous MGs. I purchased the Long Range Trophy as the Extended Range Trophy was quite a jump in price for around 30-40 extra mile range. MG is certainly putting other EVs to shame with this hugely competitive price. Worth keeping an eye on what our esteemed government may be going to do with EVs over 40k next April......
Comparing your review and others I feel that yours is a bit negative against the MG because you have a bias against China. Your logic says the MG is better but your preference is for the VW.
Credit where it’s due mg is the better car right now. It will be in testing next year when id3 gets facelift. VW unified cell will help make it cheaper as well. Higher quality interior promised as well. I’m glad the previous head of VW has gone. New ceo wants to make VW,s competitive again. Here’s hoping
Good review. I think if MG fast track the few faults it has they would very quickly be market leaders. No reversing camera OR rear wiper on the SE version is a bit of a dealbreaker for me.
for someone looking to enter the EV market there seems to be two things that are attractive on the MG. Firstly, and obviously the price, 10k in this day and age is a lot of difference and they compromises you make on the MG are worth the 10k price tag you save, even the top of the line Trophy version seems like it gives you a lot more and still significantly cheaper than it's rivals. The second IMO is the 7yr warranty, especially in an EV which you normally won't be able to take down to your local mechanic seems to add to the allure of the MG. A decent spect KIA EV6, which also offers 7yr warranty, is nearer 50k in the UK which isn't something that most people like myself can justify right now. Ofc it remains to be seen how the MG ages and how it holds together but the peace of mind that 7yr warranty gives most people, it might be worth the plunge.
Oh, if only you'd taken a little time to learn the controls before reviewing - all that talk of unavailable air conditioning is nonsense. There's a configurable button on the steering wheel and then the air conditioning can be controlled from the steering wheel using the joystick, I've never seen a better solution. You can also access the air conditioning using the button under the display. So everything in the review is wrong.
Well, the MG is made in China so what a surprise that it is cheaper ... But every UK car channel that tests the MG4 seems to blown away by the price of the MG
Yeah, Tesla is also made in China, and so is iPhone. Not every "Made in China" is cheap sh1t hadpicked by your compatriots from the import department wanting to make the biggest profit.
I like all the iD platform VW have What i don't like in the MG4 is the smartphone type screen in front of the driver it's cheap to look at and why all Cars ev Cars go that stupid way, but i like the outside design.
I wish reviewers would RTFM, fan speed and temperature can be on the right hand programable button on the wheel and drive mode can be on the left. I know this was upgraded but drive mode has always been available.
Wow what a bad review of the mg4, the lady hasn't a clue lol. Atleast check your facts before doing a review. For example double tap the windscreen demister button under the information screen to bring up your air con screen or use the buttons on the steering wheel, next she says how it's 7.9 secs to 60mph which isn't scorching - however many many other youtubers have tested it and it goes at 6.9 or bang on 7 which is good for a family hatchback the short range version does slightly faster as it's lighter. Compared to the vw the mg is just as good but with it being so much cheaper it's a no brainer.
VW is doing a promotion in China and selling ID.3 at starting price of £15k. I will buy one if I can buy one at that price in the UK. Why are EVs so damn expensive in this country??
Very close fight, It will be interesting to see where mg and VW go with the next generation of these models. Can vw put back better climate controls, and can bring the price down? Can mg up the quality and not raise the price too much?
As far as the software is concerned, one should not have to wait for the next generation. They should update the software to correct all the faults ASAP.
cars are just utility, it depreciates in value over time. don't bother with all the fancy stuff, you won't turn those on each drive. Even a panoramic roof is just useless
As other comments have said, it's a little frustrating that Vicky didn't notice/read that you can control the climate from the steering wheel via the "favourite" buttons which are quite customizable in the Trophy . The volume of the indicators can also be turned down in the settings. That would have removed two of her only complaints.
Vw's infotainment UI is completely off putting. Immediately no sale there. Even the Golf mk 8 has idiotic infotainment system that is just plain dangerous
I think the price is the only reason you'd buy the MG. And if you buy one as a family car, your kids are gonna hate you for sticking them in the back - it's got back-of-a-panel van levels of gloomy going on!
@@InBodWeTrust good point! It's been a while since I was a kid. A good portion of my childhood was spent in the back of a twin-sunroof Renault Espace. And without a screen! I'm clearly very out of touch with what it means to be a kid these days 😂
If your kids hate you because you've asked them to sit in the back of a brand-new hatchback then I think you have to worry about how good of a parent you are to create such deplorable creatures.
How is it irrelevant? Most people don't like waiting. And you cannot always plan to charge while you eat/drink etc particularly when you have an emergency and need to go.
You can turn the noise down on the indicators, and there are smart buttons with stars on you can add climate control to them for easy use. I think you should research your cars better
