Why The NASCAR Canada Series Deserves More Attention

As a thing that started in the United States and has pretty much always stuck there, NASCAR does have its diversity across the country (and outside of it) with many different series. However, one of the more not-as-well-known or talked-about-as-much ones lies in the counterpart of the States in a place known as Canada. That would be the NASCAR Pinty's Series. What is it and why does it deserve more attention? Let's take a look.

A few extra things to mention................ 28:34 - Forgot to mention the name of the track, although it was said later on. Oopsy. I have made a playlist of some of the most memorable races & moments from different times in the history of the series. The link is in the description. If you want an opportunity to race a form of CASCAR or the Pinty's Series (gaming wise), you can with NASCAR Racing 2003 Season (a.k.a. NR2003)! Head on over to nr2k3.weebly.com and you can find downloads to mods & car sets from the series up until at least the early 2000s. You may also try StunodRacing, they've got lots of stuff there too. Felt like this would help for any potential gamers. Enjoy! nr2k3.weebly.com/ stunodracing.net/index.php

Last night, I stayed up at 2AM watching Pinty's Series racing (and doing laundry). I watched 7 races in full that night. I don't know what it is, but Canada has some of the best race tracks in the world: Delaware, Mosport, Exhibition Place, ICAR, Autodromo Chaudiére, etc. Every one of the races I watched, the top 2 were battling on the last lap. I can officially say Canada has done something right. Lol. Liked the video, too. Edit: and the cars are beautiful, too.

I am an American NASCAR fan who used to set-up VHS tapes to record CASCAR on the Speed Channel when they would air the races at four o'clock in the morning. As I got older, I always wanted to learn more and get into this series. The cars look great, the drivers seem interesting, and I'm a Dodge fan. This is a great starting point, and gave me enough information to not feel lost watching a broadcast. Thanks for the effort and the video!

SOMEONE ACTUALLY ACKNOWLEDGED THIS SERIES! Thank you for making this video. I live in southern Ontario, and I’ve been to a few races. The first one I went to was the 2022 season opener at sunset speedway, and the it had some amazing short track beating and banging racing, and an unbelievable finish. In my opinion, the Pinty’s series is one of the most underrated racing series ever

I am from Canada and I am a nascar fan, I live in southwest Canada and a town not far from where I live actually used to host ARCA races in the 70s. The track’s name was the “Langley Speedway” aka “Action Speedway” (believe it or not my grandpa used to race there in locally held races between 1978-1979!) Anyway, the ARCA Menards Series West (was called the NASCAR Winston West in the 70s) raced there in the 70s and then stoped hosting races. Not long after the track closed due to noise complaints and the fact that the track property was bordering a horse park. But stock car racing in the area didn’t end until the early 2010’s because there was actually a racetrack in this town called Vernon that held NASCAR Pinty’s Series races! Unfortunately Vernon’s racetrack closed in 2015 due to noise complaints and the track is now used for city storage. But I think the idea of NASCAR in Canada should not die, I have a proposal to reopen the Vernon track and bring the Cup Series there. Like this comment if you want Cup Racing in Vernon.

Great video. Much needed information for me. I live in Oklahoma and I've slowly been becoming a fan of the pinty's series. I just wish I could watch them in real time and follow the series for a full season. I follow all most of the racing in the u.s., and find the pinty's series much more entertaining to me than the arca series or even the truck series at times. I love short track racing, and the fact they run on street courses is pretty dang cool too.

As I'm American, I've only seen the races cause someone wh puts it on to RU-vid and I loved it. I liked tracked like Riverside, ICar, Jukasa, GP3R, Exhibition Place, and Edmonton. The series deserves more love for sure and I wish NASCAR had a bigger place in the country with the big 3. Realistically, I'd love to see Trucks and Xfinity race at Canadian Tire and Cup race at Montreal. In my dreams tho, if Jukasa was still open, I'd love to see that place go full force with going all in. It has the look (meaning how dark and great the placement looks) and the racing ability to put on a great Cup series race. Could easily build up grandstands if someone really wanted to but it and had hella money.
@Reegser

Awesome stuff! The series truly does deserve more love. I agree on the CTMP and Montreal stuff. I’d argue putting Xfinity along with Cup, or hell, getting all three at Montreal. Heavily agree on Jukasa. Was an outstanding track, especially when it hosted some of the series finales. Sucks to see it‘s pretty much gone.

Great video dude!! As far as live vs taped, it's significantly more expensive to broadcast live vs taping an event. Heh, speaking of that, there was actually a track that was supposed to be made recently in Fort Erie, Ontario called Canadian Motor Speedway, and Jeff Gordon himself was involved in the designing process. Would've been about 1.2km (0.75 mi) in length with similar looks to tracks like Richmond, Las Vegas, Kentucky, Nashville, etc. The process never got to a good point (seems to have been financial problems) and the project was scrapped around 2020. Nothing like Daytona or Talladega, but it would've definitely given the country a decently big speedway. Shame!

I've been pronouncing it wrong all along. I thought it was with a long I, like the word Pint, which is where I thought they got the name. I was under the impression that Pinty's was a chain of restaurants, like Appleby's in the US. I see Pinty's advertisements on the boards at some NHL hockey games I see on TV. Mosport's oval may not be remembered by younger fans, but it is famous in the history of IndyCar as the scene of Rick Mears' nearly career ending injury. I used to see a lot of Canadian license plates in the parking areas in years gone by when I went to races at Pocono and Dover, proving there is a lot of interest in NASCAR type racing. Also, Canada was producing a lot of racing talent in the 80's & 90s, in the IndyCar series, when Players Cigarettes sponsored a race team and driver development program. It was a shame when no other company stepped up to continue the program when Players was driven out of the sport. Canada's single F1 World Champion came from that program, but it seems the talent at the highest level has dried up ever since.
@Reegser

I see. But nah, Pinty's is a brand of consumer-ready chicken products at grocery stores, and it's the NHL's official partner for chicken wings and fresh & frozen meat.

speaking of CASCAR, amusingly, Florida had their own NASCAR variant called FASCAR. based in New Smyrna Speedway about 10 miles away from Daytona, "FASCAR" was at one time the nominal governing body for the New Smyrna 1/2mi, the Orlando Speedworld 3/8mi circle track and the Lake City FL 1/2mi asphalt track as well as about a half dozen touring series that raced all over the state. . Robert Hart and Don Nerone augured that into the swamp though. . OSW is now open only for drifting, they sold Lake City years back and Don Nerone drove a stake through the touring series when he unilaterally did a mid-season tire manufacturer change from Goodyear to Hoosier ... one of the touring series was the GOODYEAR Late Model series. d'oh. so they're down to just NSS now and they've given up and affiliated with NASCAR. . funnily enough, Don "Knotty Head" Nerone looked like Homer Simpson with a birth defect.

Interesting stuff! Not gonna lie, whenever I go to Florida again (during race season), I’d love to attend New Smyrna or any other popular track besides Daytona.

@@Reegser NSS has upped their game with more cars and more people in the stands. Robert Hart still owns it ( NSS was built by his father, Clyde ) but i'm not sure how much he still has to do with running it anymore. Knotty Head Nerone is out but the last i knew his son was still running the tire truck in the pits. . asphalt wise, Citrus County puts on a spectacular show and i've heard good things about Showtime. Punta Gorda seems to be struggling. i haven't heard anything about Auburndale in 10 years so i can't say anything one way or another there. Desoto got bought by youtuber Cleetus MacFarland and St Augustine has been out of commission forever. i could rattle off a bunch of tracks that are long gone ( Eau Gallie, anyone? ) but there wouldn't be any point as there's nothing left of most of them. . dirt style, Volusia, East Bay and Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala have it going on. . aside from NSS, the east coast of Florida is a short track dead zone now. pretty much everything is mid-state or Gulf Coast. the Putnam dirt track might still be there but that's another one i've never been too. . they'll all be running something for Speedweeks, in the run up to the Daytona 500.

Jukasa is closing because of the business men who owned it there was only one who really cared about racing. He passed away last year and now the surviving owners don't want to run a track. This isn't a situation though where someone can step in and buy it because the owners want the land. They plan on bulldozing the track to expand their grow operations which also take up near by land. Pot is a big industry up here and I'm sure they'll make a lot more money growing that than hosting racing. But considering Cayuga was transformed into Jukasa just 5 years ago it seems like such a waste. Jukasa was a beautiful facility. Now we lose it for weed.

Heard about the story from another commenter, but you've added in some good details! It's sad to know about the overall situation. I wish it was easy enough to just sell the track to another interested group if the owners don't wanna run it themselves.

Happy to see you become invested! Honestly, I'd right off the bat say the recent 2021 season. A crazy number of points lead changes, multiple winners across the board, an absolutely stacked field at the front, some occasional tempers, and overall very phenomenal racing. If I had to go back in time and choose a specific order after that... 2018, 2013, 2017, 2015, 2014. Any year past 2013, you'd be getting a bunch of seasons with one or two absolutely dominant drivers, and/or sorta less stacked fields. Reasons for that order are below. 2013-2015: Three seasons in a row, there's some form of a points standings finish where the top two leaders have a difference of somewhere under 5 points. '13 was Scott Steckly vs D.J. Kennington, '14 was L.P. Dumoulin vs J.R. Fitzpatrick, '15 was Steckly vs Jason Hathaway. If I had to choose one of the years for the best one, I'd go with 2013. It had the best overall racing in general, imo. 2017: A season dominated by three drivers: Labbe, Lacroix, Lapcevich. Only one driver besides them scored a single win. Very memorable for the Riverside finish. 2018: Probably 𝘵𝘩𝘦 closest season of racing before 2021. At least 8 drivers in a 50-point cushion by the end, multiple winners (only one driver won back-to-back races), a TON of consistency at the front of the field, etc.

Good video but I’m gonna add to why the Pintys series is lacking in car count. Back in 2017 I was a crew member with Kerry mick. And I remember one day I asked him how much it cost for one race. $30,000 is what it cost. Also in 2017 the highest paying race was at Delaware speedway and only paid the winner roughly $8000. I understand every level of nascar is like that and it’s a pay to play sport but nascar needs to bring sponsors in to support the series and bring in some money. But nascar doesn’t care about the pintys series. Also the reason 80% of the field is dodge is because dodge is the only manufacturer that is involved with the series and pays teams for wins. No other manufacturer provides any support at all.
@Reegser
@Reegser 2 года назад
A lot of interesting (and maybe slightly depressing) details here! All of this seems to lead back to the purchase of CASCAR. I personally don’t exactly know if CASCAR was cheaper/paid their drivers well, but if it was better in general then than now… it explains a lot. I agree on the sponsorship thing, the series needs its support there. In a nutshell, it’s a great series, but the financial stuff behind the scenes is super convoluted.

Even less than the small amounts of promotion you see for the Mods (usually when Preece, Newman, enter races you’ll see nascar post about it). Same with the Euro and Mexico series. We had the CASCAR Super Series in the US on Speedvision in the early 2000's just before the NASCAR takeover. Personally I liked it as CASCAR more because it truly had it's own identity. Being just another series under the umbrella of NASCAR hurts its appeal in my opinion. That being said, some of the best stock car racing I've ever seen came from the Pinty's Series in 2016 and 2017. Lapcevich and Labbe's showdown at St. Eustache for the final 23 laps of that race should be shown to every race car driver who ever steps foot into a stock car of any kind as to how to properly race for a win.
@Reegser
@Reegser 2 года назад
Agree on everything! I also believe that the CASCAR name gave the series its own, proper identity. It's no wonder the driver counts dropped as the years went on after the partnership. Regardless, it still puts on a terrific show every race! Agreed on the Lapcevich & Labbe showdown, that was absolutely wild.

As far as I'm concerned, the Arca east and west would follow the same current rules as the pinty series. Same with Mexico. Why? The cars are relatively cheap compared to US cars, but not so cheap that Mexico can't run it... Arca would have it's own rules, albeit being a bit more careful to have big grills.

Wouldn't surprise me if they did, but I honestly don't know. It's said that founder John Chisholm wanted a scaled-down version of Bristol, and he got permission to build Riverside like that. It was a part of the original design from the construction in the 60s, and it remained during a 2006 renovation. Perhaps having five degree banked straightaways was Chisholm's idea of showing some form of a difference in comparison, who knows. The history is interesting, that's for sure!
