I posted some ideas on the last video. I’ll post some more now, if you don’t mind Mike: 1. How will the 2018 draft class compare to other elite draft classes such as 2003? (Prediction) 2. What does the future look like for lottery teams? (Hawks, Suns, Magic, etc.) 3. Will the Jimmy Butler injury ruin the Timberwolves’ chances for a playoff run? 4. Was David Stern the WORST Commissioner in NBA History? 5. How long will LeBron’s prime last? 6. From Draft Bust to EVENTUAL ALL-STAR? The Story of Chauncey Billups! 7. How much do NBA Coaches improve their teams? 8. Do Two-Way contracts really help NBA teams? 9. The shot that BROKE THE NBA (Kareem’s Skyhook)

alipareedanse12 Mike didn’t say it maybe bcuz he didn’t wanna go there or just doesn’t think that way but if you go to any black barbershop in the USA the mass consensus is that, that rule they implemented was racially motivated whether ppl wanna believe it or not!. Think about it. he said in the video players in Kareem’s day couldn’t leave college unless they had a financial hardship. And in the modern nba, with the exception of a HANDFUL of HS players, that is usually their #1 reason for making the jump straight to the league. They can say they didn’t wanna take chances on HS players but let’s be fr they didn’t take a chance on black HS players anymore. Cuz 90% (and I’m being generous the the 90%) are. Then you add coming straight from poverty to millions. Immaturity. 1 year in college ain’t go change their mentality. I say they need to do like the nfl and do 3years if that’s the case. Bcuz majority of the nfl teams are getting a polished player both physically and mentally(most of the time). Emphasis on most! There have been complete bust but in the nfl’s case u rarely hear them say it was bcuz the player “wasn’t ready”.

The average rookie salary in the NBA is $490,180. You can pay the most expensive college in the US for 10 semesters with only one year of playing in the NBA. And that's just the most expensive university, you can go a full 4 years in any college of your choice without taking any extra loans and still have a couple thousands left over. So this, "they should value education" argument is bs, because if they're a bust, then can just go to college *(without having to juggle basketball AND academics)* and actually learn something and get a degree. You can go to college at any age, so forcing them to make that choice at 19 versus any other age with money from the NBA is ridiculous.

Aristides Gonzalez because then 17 years later when u go on a job interview at 38 a job will see your experience (none) and how u just graduated college!! They will never hire you. So... because they could higher a younger person with the same degree and skills (also none) and pay them less and less medical insurance and other coverages Bc it’s less expensive since a 21 year old is more biologically healthy than a 38 year old.... boom
@dantef_44
@dantef_44 6 лет назад
James Burgess so..... 490k taxed at highest bracket 40% which is ridiculous.... and other deductions ur prob at like 370k take home (not fair) so then u have to pay for a home and hundreds of things I don’t care to list Bc it’s a RU-vid video they then couldn’t go back and afford the college in full.... also how would one know if they are a bust LOL. A bust is a player who is expected to be great and be absolute garbage. I think what u meant to say was if they are not as good Bc they will need to retire early and u can’t live another 60-70 years on only 2-3 million saved up if that

Why not let high school players enter the draft and if they don't get picked up allow them to go to their first choice college. And if a high schooler is drafted they must spend a set amount of time in the G-League.

Duncan Walter I feel like it would be better if college students were just paid because it’s like a job. They can develop more in college to. Because if a scrawny high school student jumps into the nba they could be at risk of a lot of things

Duncan Walter I don’t agree with sending high school players to the G league because there has been successful stars straight from high school. Just because there are some bust that’s the nba teams job to know beforehand.

DamonM Roger I thought he was a good player but could have been great. Look at Hakeem Olajuwon. He did t learn to play basketball until he went to uofh. He developed defense because of soccer skills and his speed was unmatched. But he developed during his 4 years of college and then went to rockets and Moses Malone too him under his wing and trained him even more. Hakeem was too raw to go to nba and he would he worn out his body. They should come as ready products with tweaking not soft clay that needs to be harden

Caliph Knight I think it should be up to the players. If they want to go early then let them. In some cases like Lebron, Kobe, Garnett, Stoudemire, etc. They end up being really good if not great players. I think Mike made some really good points in this video. If they don't end up being drafted they should be able to just go to college anyway and work on their game or go to the G League.

Best thing we can do: Make it so kids can declare for the draft in their senior year, and if they don't get picked, then they can go to college instead of losing their NCAA eligibility. Then, during college, they can try for the draft again. If they fail, they should be allowed to either make it to the NBA the hard way (through free agency and the G-League), or they should be able to finish an education at their college and pursue a different career.

Rellllzzz I feel like there are only a few colleges that offer nba development skills. The college game and nba are a totally different game. So if your good enough why not go to the nba and get professional training while getting paid. If you aren’t good enough your not good enough. I feel like the nba needs to teach these kids better because a lot of them don’t work out. They should have enough money to go back to school if it doesn’t work out.

We're ignoring the true thing here. Players should stay 2 years. Get their associates degree. NFL requires 3 years in college. 2 should be applied for Basketball. NHL and MLB have always been about youth and taking younger guys but many of them are still allowed to go play in college. That's the difference here. Players should go to school for 2 years that way at least they get their associates degree. If they don't want to play 2 full seasons. Red shirt. Plain and simple

I think something important to note is the revenue stream the NCAA gets from getting these top prospect joining their programs and the NCAA as a whole. Getting these top prospects to go to college also raises the competition and parity levels in college basketball. The best solution, in my opinion, is to pay the players while they're in college. Yes I know they're getting a free education, but that is nowhere near equivalent to the amount of revenue these players bring in from ticket sales, TV deals, memorabilia, ect. College should be a right of passage for everyone in this country. It can help you grow as a person and you can seriously cultivate knowledge that you can't get anywhere else. If you're able to get this experience for free, plus making money for your unique talents, then I think most top prospects will chose to go to college for multiple years.
@troyarrington5492
@troyarrington5492 6 лет назад

Ben Simmons didn't learn anything at lsu cause he played for a crappy program and a crappy coach. he only went to lsu because thats where his parents went. thats actually what Ben Simmons said was the main reason to go there. but if you go to UK or duke you don't hear those players bitch about how they didn't learn anything. Anthony Davis, john wall, etc all admitted that they learned a lot in their first year in college. even demarcus cousins said that if he didn't play for coach calipari at kentucky he would have went into the NBA with a bad work ethic and a shitty attitude. my point is is that Ben Simmons has complained about the ncaa on how they don't pay players when its a amateur league and he complains how he never learned anything in college basketball. how can u with the coach he had, plus he didnt even win much. they didnt even make the ncaa tournament. mike, i like you but dawg... referencing ben simmons? cmon man

What the NBA needs to do is form a draft eligibility committee. An independent group filled with knowledgeable basketball minds tasked with determining the draft eligibility of every early entry player (high school, freshman and sophomore) who wants to declare. This committee's goal would be to make the best possible decision for the player. They would have the players film, the ability to talk to NBA scouts and GM's about their feelings on that players draft stock, and so forth to make a proper determination. If they feel that the player is ready then that player becomes eligible, if not he must remain in school and can try again the next year. Juniors and Seniors would be able to declare on their own. The problem with trying to make it a system where every player has to play at least a year of college, two years of college, has to be certain age, or whatever system like that they can come up with is that NOT ALL PLAYERS ARE THE SAME. Some players are ready after high school. Some players are ready after two years of college. Some are ready after all 4 years of college. They have to treat each case individually. These kids aren't robots. I really think that this committee would improve things for everyone involved. The NBA would be better off because fewer players who are unprepared would be entering the draft too early. College bball would be better off because of fewer one and dones. And the players would be better off because of the committee looking out for their best interests.

I say make 2 changes. 1) institute the 0 and 2 rule. All high school players are allowed to declare for the draft and even get drafted, but if they don't sign their rookie contract, they then go to college for 2 seasons kind of like how college baseball does it. 2) add a 3rd round of the draft to account for the influx of high schoolers declaring for the draft and not following through with their rookie deals. I feel all sides can benefit from this: players, NBA and NCAA

Personally, I think the NBA should take page from the NHL's playbook. With the NHL, prospects can either go to the junior leagues in Canada (essentially club teams), focus on playing hockey and preparing for the pros, or go play college hockey in America, get a degree, and then try to get the pros after 3-4 years. If someone created a Junior basketball league, that would work out perfectly. Players that want to focus on basketball can focus on basketball and players that actually want to get an education can get an education.

i feel like the real problem is the ncaa. if players were allowed to sign with agents through the draft process if they test the waters, WITHOUT losing their ncaa eligibility.. that way they have a professional helping them weigh their options. it'd make the decision to stay in school or go pro much easier for them. a lot of players only see the immediate money.. if an agent is helping you through the process, they can show you that you could stay a year or so and be better off. but once u sign with an agent... the option to stay in school is stripped from you and you immediately have to commit to being a pro whether you're actually ready or not.

Ashton Andrews Yea lets just send inmature 18 year olds with no education to the NBA and give them millions of dollars to spend freely so they can end up broke in 3 years when they dont pan out in the NBA. At least if they go to college they have a degree they can fall back on.
@AshtonAndrews89

Jarrett Hoogerhyde I don't believe three years are going to really change how someone handles their money, I believe that's something that's learned from your environment and parenting as a youth. Also who are you to say what they do with the money they earned? It's such a small number of players that are drafted yearly it really doesn't hurt the big picture. There are kids there because they have to via the rules, and the majority of the athletes are there all four years anyway.

I remember when Ben Simmons tweeted out, “I’m not here to learn I am here to play basketball.” He even made a good move because the NCAA made him sit out a couple of games witch decreased the chances of him getting injured. I mean he could have used those two games to get better but what would two games do?

If the NBA Really doesn't want to risk it with high schoolers, have a separate draft for high school players only that works like the NFL's supplemental draft (use next years pick for that round if you want a player, pass if you do not want a player in that round) then send the guy to the G-League for a year (or longer depending on how long the player needs to develop).
@RealMichaelJJordan
@RealMichaelJJordan 6 лет назад
The one and done rule was only a thing because colleges want to exploit players for money. When people like Lebron went straight to the NBA that scared colleges to force kids to go into the waiting room. It’s a nice waiting room however they do not get paid and the risks are still relevant. It is arguable that some players need time to develop; take Michael Jordan, A top 5 all time player, He needed 2 years of college and he was ready to tear up the NBA. Also look at Kobe Bryant, 17 years old straight out of High School, it took him some time to develop but it was almost two years and Kobe and Mike are the same caliber of player. The only difference is that Kobe got paid to develop and Michael didn’t. I think it would be fair to the players who hold up the NCAA to get paid by their colleges at least.

I'm probably gonna be the only one that thinks this, but I like NFL rules that require an athlete to be 3 years out of highschool. I don't see a problem giving athletes two more years of education and two more years of practice. It would hopefully increase the skill of rookies going into the NBA.

Go with the baseball structure. Either play 3 years of college or enter the draft out of high school. If they do enter out of high school, they have to play 1 year of G-League before playing in the NBA the next year. The NCAA will win because they'll have players that actually want to be in college. The NBA wins because even if they draft a player out of high school, they can use the G-League to develop and protect their prospect for a year. Also the kids win because they actually get a choice. This really isn't that hard to resolve.

The NBA should do like the NHL (You can be drafted by a team & stay to college (And develop there) & still be in the team system (You can become an asset) & when the team that drafted you need you, you signed a rookie contract & go to the NBA or Minor Leagues (if they think you are not ready but close) )
@givenspade
@givenspade 6 лет назад
I think they should make it at least 2 years in college. We can’t just think about the nba think about the college ball fans too, you have this star player who can make the college huge but only plays for one year so we have these new faces arrives and leaving the next season. I’m not a college person but my dad doesn’t watch nba anymore but is a huge college fan so he is always complaining how we have players like Anthony Davis who dominates in college but leaves the very next season and like an amazing player like Kyrie only playing 11 games in college And we probably won’t have as many busts if they play 2 college seasons

Just on your statement of getting all that money right out of highschool "changes their lives" is for the most part a short term thing, the majority of NBA players (last study was 60% of NBA players) will be broke shortly after they leave, and highschools have pretty much burned their bridges in getting a college education if they fail in the NBA. And its a huge problem in professional sports, but that should be a discussion for another day. I am mixed on the one and done, on one hand you do get the LeBrons and Kobes that are able to make that jump, but at the same time I think college is something people should experience as you really grow as a person during that time, and when you miss it, its gone forever as its not the same going back to college as an adult.

I like the one and done rule I think they should change it to the must get a degree rule meaning players must go to college and must have a degree before being eligible for the draft because a degree is forever with the right degree you will always have a job however someone goes to the nba right from high school plays one season and gets a career ending injury what then he’s not making that nba money anymore now he’s working McDonald’s for $8 an hour when he could have gotten a degree and made $100,000 a year after that injury

Believe it or not, LaVar Ball had a potential solution to this problem. Did you know that if you're playing in the NCAA, you can't receive any income from external sources aka you can't get a job? The NCAA wants you to play for free in exchange for "recognition", while you're already paying tuition, classes, supplies, etc and they're making millions off your name. LaVar's idea was to create an alternative system where top high school players can join his league and get drafted into the NBA after 1 year (because of NBA draft rules). And the players playing in his league will receive a minimum salary of $5,000/yr. That's not a lot but it's better than not receiving any type of income and playing for free in the NCAA. I don't know if he's still determined to make that happen or not, so we'll see.

Mike what if I was a high school senior that was capable of learning to be a doctor while on the job? For example I had the mental capacity to learn it, I had shown some great doctor skills in high school, etc. Would a hospital hire me right out of high school so they could pay me to learn how to be a doctor for the next 4 years so I could then get my MD and go to another hospital? Replace doctor with NBA player and hospital with team.

There is nothing preventing an undrafted player from going to college and playing ball there except for NCAA rules. It is the NCAA that says a player must have never had an agent or have ever received a contract from an American professional league in order to play college sports. This whole issue is the fault of the NCAA, not the fault of the NBA. The NCAA truly has a monopoly on young players, and the NBA fell for their talking points. The entire system should be overhauled. I have several ideas of how this could be done. 1. Require all new players to go through the "farm" system and/or college before entering the NBA. 2. Do not require players to sign on with an agent before the draft. 3. Pay higher salaries to players within the farm system if they take college courses at the same time. Make farm league regular season 42 games to allow athletes to focus on their college education. 4. Put an age limit on the Farm system at 35. 4. Create a new league for all retired players after the age of 35 similar to the PGA tour seniors league. Require all players to retire from the main league after the age of 45.

I admire Kwame a lot. He went straight from High School and spent 10 years in the NBA. He now has a net worth of around $30 million. Sure, he was never a huge talent, but he still managed to spend 10 years in the league and get paid! Probably still more successful than his class mates from high school. Sure he was a bust, but he was still good enough to stick around until he was in his thirties. Good for him!
