They are trying to make the game easier to make it seem like players are getting better. They think this sells, when in reality stiff competition sells. This is why any player who chases superteams, or cries for fouls constantly, will never have my respect (not that any of them care, but my 2 cents anyway).
@@nefejefia7475 Wow I didn't know that, so they can rescind bs technicals and ejections but can't fine officials? They're still covering for them rescinding it won't do 💩 they should get fined HEAVILY like players do so they get their shi together
@@crosswiz6 I agree so too, Adam always says they get punished internally but he never makes it known to the public so how are we going to know and also if they do get punished internally why do they keep doing the same shit over and over, it's all bs. We have been complaining about this for years but Adam is yet to resolve these issues
They are not even insults to begin with. People are getting ejected for just being confused or making the most harmless gestures or getting techs for what it looks like, absolutely no reason which is just refs sacrificing actual good officiating for power. And to top it all off, defense is slowly deteriorating which leads to meaningless 3 point contest and high scoring games record games becoming a daily thing, players flopping like fish and being incredibly soft, and people getting easy free throws while building up their stats it's like everyone in the NBA are just stat padders. The NBA today is just absolutely atrocious. The 90s and 2000s NBA was actually good, and Adam Sipver ruined everything David Stern did corrently.
Direct insults I think should be called. You dont want players cussing out referees all game just because they are frustrated. But just criticizing and questioning refs shouldnt be a foul for sure. And taunting should definitely be allowed, it makes the game more interesting for everyone.
ejections are the least of the NBA problems. you mentioned the scoring averages of the 2005 finals like it was a bad thing. 2005 Final was the best 2 defenses in League. that series was far superior to the BS played today.
Yeah, as soon as he started talking down the 90s and 00s like it was crude and simple, I know it's time to pay the comments a response or two and move the hell on.
to be fair it wasn't that good - i watched it and as far as i remember 3 or 4 games were blowouts and if you enjoy watching the offensive part of the game it was pretty let's say unwatchable.
@@shaft9000no u jus can’t let go, the players have evolved and gotten way better and u have to accept that. defense wasn’t better back then players were jus worse and i’ve seen full games the proof is there😂😂
@@nitro292no the league has gotten soft they are getting out did by women’s college basketball why can’t you clowns admit there is a problem with the NBA
Zone was played all the way back in the 80s. There is very clear cut footage of zone being used to defend Dr J. The Pistons openly talked about using zone on MJ. It was used consistently throughout the 90s.
THANK YOU. I have so many newspaper articles dating back to 1982 talking about this, but whenever I paste them here, RU-vid instantly deletes my comment. This is not a platform for sourced debate. They won't let it be one.
@@coldsnap5742 It’s common knowledge if you’re not new to the game or under the age of 25. I just hate that it’s used as a reason to try and elevate modern players. Like no, it has been used all throughout the modern game. The main defensive changes that occurred were 3 sec and hand checking (the video creator got that part right).
@@izzy031096 It all started with the 1998 lockout. Then they removed hand-checking (actually enforcing it this time) in 1999 in a sad attempt to bring fans back by artificially increasing scoring. More rule changes were made in the next few years, culminating with the death-blow in 2004...gee, who had just won the title that year? Oddly enough, there was a GOOD rule change in that time: the (alleged) legalization of zone defense. Zone should never have been outlawed. But in reality, they made it ILLEGAL via introducing the defensive three-second violation.
Narrator's correct that zone was illegal until after 01. The old "illegal defense" violation was basically that - team got caught trying to play zone. The legalization of zone and implementation of defensive 3 secs went hand in hand; the idea was to boost scoring. I remember not quite understanding how that made any sense - and really, it didn't, not for the 2001 NBA - but maybe the league was smarter than I gave them credit for and knew that teams would adjust over time and start prioritizing long distance shooting. The "zone" that was being used on Doc, MJ, etc. was a combination of 1) 80s/90s halfcourt floor spacing that allowed defenders to help more easily w/o being far enough away from your actual assignment to get called for it, and 2) flat out illegal defense that didn't get called. Unless you were up against someone like Reggie Miller, perimeter defenders would play like 10 feet off their guy and the refs were good with it. So I mean, you're not wrong that teams played zone before the 01 rule changes, but the narrator isn't wrong about the rule changes.
But it was illegal, same thing with hand checking todays, it’s illegal but it happens every games, you can’t defend a Lebron, a Zion, Giannis, Jokic, Embiid or ANT without putting your hands on them, just look at Jokic scares on his arms …
I'll always bring up the HUGE changes that have happened to dribbling and what is considered traveling or holding the ball, every single play in todays game would be a foul just 10-15 years ago, not to mention 20+. This video doesn't even come close to showcasing how crazy it is. People act like players are just better at ball handling but in reality the vast majority of it is just that the player in possession of the ball can basically do whatever they want with the ball now giving them much more ability to make crazy plays. Its super interesting looking at all the rules changes for dribbling over the years and seeing breakdowns of what used to be called as travel, highly recommend anybody to look into it.
the league actually started favoring the offense in 91 by introducing flagrant fouls, 94 you couldnt hand check past the three pt line, 96 allen iverson was getting away with carrys and double dribbles constantly. its 90s stans that hate todays game but dont realize that it was their era that started making offense easier to play. also the games offensive increase isnt about making it more fun to watch or easier for offense, it was to increase more sportsmanship like play. so actually what youre whining about was happening over 30 years ago! in your favorite era you love to dick ride!!!!!!
i completely disagree. while “The NBA is way too soft” can stand in its own, i like the way the title presents it. like we aren’t quite there yet and there is still time until it reaches that point. almost like there’s still time to save it
@@ethankane2118 My point was that the NBA is *already* too soft, IMO. It's not a critique of syntax. If we were judging on grammar, your lack of appropriate capitalization would be disqualifying on the first word. It's part of English.
my biggest problem with officiating is that often times both teams arent given the same treatment, if you're gonna call something a foul on one end, do it on the other one, too...
He’s dead and rotting in the ground. Y’all should learn to move with the times or go watch curling or some shit. Lol i forgot my point Point is it doesn’t matter and nothings gonna change
Honestly tho the nba NEEDS to add more physical defense because just waving your hands around and having to be 5 inches away from the opponent just makes defending more boring and adding more physical play would help defenders and make the game wayyy more interesting
Dude, I remember several people are punished just because they put their hands on the other(like kuminga, holiday etc) :'D Refs rigging games for bets like crazy
Moving the 3 line back 1.5+ feet will help, and a lot. _Make The Midrange Matter Again._ Every other big in the league has no business pretending to be Bob MacAdoo or Dirk while they brick 1/2 FTs. Oh, and ditch the current lane and lower-block foul rules while you're at it. _Make Back-to-the basket Relevant Again._
Don't you love when people use LeBron for clicks. They just know people are drawn to him (for better or for worse). So many people have based their whole content identities on him. It's crazy (this is a great video though).
Bring back hand checking. At this point, we already know the players won't compete at the All Star game so get rid of that and just let the players take 3 to 5 days off to rest and relax since that's what their doing regardless. The game can be saved but I honestly don't see Silver being the one to lead it.
@@crosswiz6 Fr, Adam Silver has done nothing but steal money and create a completely terrible product that is causing the NBA to decline. All he cares about is making money off of what he does. He doesn't care about basketball (especially the defensive end), the NBA's success, the fans, or the players who play in his league for him. He is just stealing money from an organization that's declining due to his own terrible work. Overall, he is a terrible commissioner and rule creator.
brunson and hart went on hot ones versus and brunson actually gave a couple good ideas. the first was that apparently refs get punished but we just dont know about it so he wants to make that public the same way the players punishments are. his 2nd idea that i thought was good was giving them more time off because refs travel more and ref more games than players play each season (some can ref up to 100 games in a season.) i think the time off and hiring more refs is good. i always thought having more of a revolving door of refs is good idea because if they are more likely to be replaced they may ref better (or anxiety would make it so much worse but that depends on the person)
Publicly punishing refs would be horrible How about the NBA just stops making a big deal out of it and players do the same Trying to turn it into a dramatic event keeps the NBA annoying
@@hecevans8749I’d personally compare him to Steven Adams. Defence and offensive rebounds through the roof. Rodman is slightly better at both of those things and Adams is a better screen setter and passer. But they are both defence rebounds first, scoring second. Dive on any loose ball, hustle constantly. I see many parallels. To the OP: Rodman would definitely start today. This youtuber has some questionable takes at best…
Don't wanna go back to the 80 point games but right now every game is a boring three point shooting contest with almost zero defense. Something needs to change.
You're right... The NBA is soft! The fact that LeBron is literally the Lance Armstrong of the NBA and the NBA doesn't care because they make money shows it!!!
That’s why March has become my favorite month for ball. Beyond just getting to see my alma mater play I just prefer the focus on team play, solid defense, and much better tournament structure from the NCAA than the NBA. The energy at games is also just way better than the pro league so this whole idea that only offense sells tickets is a farce.
Getting? It's been soft ever since The Pistons beat The Lakers in the finals lol The NBA lost alot of money. And that's all they care about. The owners and players are greedy. Players don't play for the fans just themselves. That's why I'm done with pro sports. If its just a business and loyalty respect and the fans dont matter then no reason to watch.
Rodman would be "almost unplayable"? He is the most valuable player of all time. He would be even better today, with managers like Morey that can recognize value. In his era, people didn't understand that 3s, layups, free throws, spacing, gravity, and rebounding have immense value in basketball. They thought SCORING was value (many still do). His defense wasn't even elite, it MIGHT have been above average. His rebounding is so freakishly good that he would be an AMAZING add to the GSW of the recent run. Put him instead of the Zaza or instead of Chris Paul or instead of almost any >5th best player on a recent championship GSW team, and they improve. Massively. That's absolutely disgusting! That's what player value is. Making great(est?) teams even better. I'd rather have someone who creates gravity and can shoot and space plus Rodman on my team than two players who hog lots of possessions and score inefficiently and can't play defense and don't rebound.
Nowadays players are less skilled because they have no handles or defense. Being able to travel, double dribble, and carry the ball does not mean you have good handles.🙄
Guys is just getting better and better by year they find ways to abuse the rule to their advantage nothing can do about that even role players can score 30 if they are hot. Just enjoy the game.
Maybe offensively they are getting better but I'm sorry you cannot say that they are getting alot better by exploiting the rules of the game itself. How are you supposed to enjoy the game when the games rules are broken non stop all game? You can stop that, you enforce the rules again simple as that. You call every double dribble, every travel and so on.
@@alyxsatyr3585not “maybe” offensively; it’s clear as day. The lakers as a 9th seed had 4 players score 25+ points yesterday and all of those are CLEARLY more offensively skilled than Smush Parker, Kwame Brown, Kendrick Perkins Eric Snow, Thabo Sefolosha etc. who all played heavy minutes or were starters for playoff teams.
@tiktokformenofculture9753 I agree that players are better offensively. But what you can't ignore is the fact that a huge majority of that is due to the huge increase in 3pt shooting, more space on defense, and also as discussed above, the rules being exploited constantly by players. If they called every double dribble and travel and didn't give players points for flopping as well as hand checking and better defense then the scoring would definitely not be as high. I won't argue that players are better offensively but the reason it looks way better is because of those reasons not because of a huge difference in skill.
@@alyxsatyr3585 3pt shooting plays the biggest role tho. Way more than the rules, the 3pt shot has made role players an offensive threat to the point where there are no scrubs in the NBA. Flopping doesn’t happen as much as critics say it does nor does it happen most of the time, fouls & free throws are at an all time low. If I search up Lebron flops right now, they will literally show 5 to 8 instances with only 3 of them being clear flops and the flops would be across a thirteen year period. Players don’t flop every game. And handchecking has been out of the NBA since the early 2000s. Nobody ever criticizes Kobe for excelling in an era with no handchecking. Those things combined do make a difference, but it’s disrespectful when fans make it seem like everything a player does today is null and void because of a soft nba. Kobe’s 81= mamba mentality Luka’s 73 or Embiid’s 70= signs of a soft nba
Guys, remember the time when Mt. Mutombo was allowed to wag his finger at opponents after blocking their shots? That was fun to watch! Players were allowed to stare people down after dunking on them! It used to be much tougher to score, especially with drives to the basket, because defenders were allowed to hand-check you and bigs were allowed to man the middle! So, we saw some defense! Some resistance! Now the lane opens up like when Moses parted the Red Sea, you can't touch a guy, there's no big manning the middle, and you have shooters all over the place, which is fine, but could you please bring back hand-checking and allow bigs to man the middle? I don't wanna see any more incidents like when Tim Duncan was tossed outta the game just for laughing! Or when Giannis got a technical just for staring someone down after he dunked on him! These things are ridiculous! Plus load management, plus the past few all-star games being a disgrace to the game! Back in the 90s, I remember being impressed when Richard Dumas and Latrell Sprewell averaged 15 points in their rookie seasons! Now, I hear about 50, 60 and 70 points all the time and I wanna throw up, because where's the defense?
The NBA is a Traveling, Ball Carry, and the offensive player can take his hand wrapped around the defensive player to score, but yet it's a defensive foul... League!
I have noticed this new RU-vid basketball genre narrative that the 90’s was slow and overhyped which is bs. You weren’t there to watch it. So unless you go back and watch entire seasons, going off stats only tell half the truth. Also as a person who had a career as a corporate analyst, I know that you can find anything you want, to suit your narrative in stats if you look hard enough.
In my game I had positioning and the guy ran into me. But I was bigger than him so I didn’t fall back. The ref told me I had to flop to get the call.😑😑😑😑😑😑
I mean since all star weekend the scores been lowered and less bad foul calls, refs being soft asl for thec's is normal, Rasheed Wallace getting a thec for staring at the ref or Duncan getting one for laughing on the bench were all before this era
The sad thing is that it’s trickling down to college, high school, jr high, and youth league. It’s like this on every level of basketball and has been for years. The one traveling that gets me is when they catch it and then hop or take two gather steps after you’ve already gathered the ball.
They can start by calling traveling, I mean I watch LeBraun carry the ball end to end only dribbling 2 times. Wilt chamberlain would average 150 points a game in today’s basketball.
there was a time where i woke up at 2 in the night (i'm french) just to watch live games... and then, i realized it was more of a 3pt contest and too much whistled. so i quit.
I loved basketball growing up but I felt this change at a domestic and rep ball level in Australia, flopping is a serious tactic, the key is no longer a bruiser type of place, and there seems to be protection of offensive players by the refs especially if they're small. It took all the joy out of the sport for me and I stopped playing a few years ago. I really want to see flopping get heavily penalized and roughness return to the game, until then I'll stick to more interesting sports.
Regardless of what you think of the officiating, I hate when players argue with the referees. I have *YET* to see an official change his mind on a call after a player is yelling at him. All it does is piss them off and possibly make them want to make iffy calls go the other way. However, I *HAVE* seen players calmly talk to a ref after a call goes against them and - to be honest, I dont know if it really helps - but it seems when they do that, the ref definitely seems more inclined to listen them. This is rare... Players love to argue or be passive aggressive.
I had to pause at 01:53 where SAS said the league is too soft and a clip of Curry getting fouled but no call. Is that saying Curry is under the same soft rules for other catered superstars? Because I think je's the exception and only superstar getting robbed of glory in this modern NBA. He got his out the mud since day 1.
That's just it people forget or just don't know that 60's, 70's, 80's had an insane pace and scoring that's similar to today's game, and players were still allowed to defend. In fact, I think a lot of players today would lack the cardio vascular conditioning to keep up with players of that era. They may be stronger on average and jump higher but the pace would even things out.
its like when your playing basketball in elementary school amd the teachers ref but they make the worst calls in history and then tell you you’re too competitive when you complain
