Christen Press, soccer player for Angel City FC in the ‪@NWSLsoccer‬, and Kara Nortman, cofounder of Angel City FC and managing partner for Monarch Collective, sits down with senior writer Emma Hinchliffe to discuss the latest $100 million investment into teams, leagues and players.
Kara describes how she got involved in the pay equity fight with the U.S. Women's National Team and how signing Christen as the first player for Angel City FC sparked her interest to start the fund into the league.
Christen details how she spent her career fighting for betterment, fighting for pay equity, and fighting for basic resources for athletes that just weren't there. Now many of her current teammates started their own business and became entrepreneurial to get more money.
Both women explain that there is still a gap between the demand for women's sports and the delivery of the content to various platforms. Christen admits she has trouble finding her own team's away games to watch live and thinks that the investment from Monarch Collective will hopefully aid the growth of finding content more easily and accessible to those who want to watch the games.

I am a new fan of Women's Football because of the now infamous "Kiss". I will say that what started out as me going down the rabbit hole of what was all the fuss about, and realizing it was totally inappropriate what happened, but it was what eventually lead me to realize how amazing the game is and how talented these players are. The other thing that made it possible was, as mentioned, social media. The fact that you can watch many matches on the internet is a real game changer. I would also point out that the amount of creative content of players off the pitch, especially from the English National Team, has made it very appealing to get to know the players. I really wish there was more of this type of content from the US side. I think it would be really nice to see some of the US players making more RU-vid content. I'd love to see some young RU-vid content creators go out to their local clubs and start making some content with the NWSL players.

I’ve attended a few NWSL games and I like their fans-first approach. They are really trying to win you over. It’s really a breath of fresh air compared to popular men’s sports that seem intent to gouge their fans and cater to corporate seating in their $1B stadiums. Sometimes the soccer isn’t the best. But it is always fun and exciting. And it is so refreshing to see a team win and/or lose as a team instead of a bunch of egos running around the field pouting and faking injury. Wish the league tons of success. Just promise me you all won’t let all the money and success go to your heads!! PS. Go Wave! Win it all this year…

The funny thing is that US women's soccer is in its infancy stages, meanwhile the more well established fans of female European clubs think the US has already taken off and is this massive powerhouse when in reality it's just in its beginning stages. Does the nwsl even have a strong enough backing or following, outside of the USWNT?

Middle aged American guy here who only watches women's soccer. Prefer it over the senseless flopping of the men. But, I only watch the WSL and European leagues. The NWSL has a very long way to go, and major up hill climb. To me it's basically a glorified college league. I live in LA, and have seen the crowds at BMO Stadium grow smaller and smaller. Why. Because Angel City just keeps losing. Yes, they just made the playoffs for the first time, but barely. The talent pool, along with the coaching and playing techniques and formations just aren't there in the NWSL. And, they are increasing the amounts of teams. Which is only going to lessen the talent pool even more. Now if the NWSL was a stock, and I was a long trader, I would probably wait just a bit longer, and then take a position and buy in. Buy low, sell high. Because I do have faith in this league and absolutely want to see it shine.

I find it hard to believe that a league with multiple world cup winners, that sent 60 players to the world cup last summer, and crushes other Women’s soccer leagues in attendance is somehow only college level compared to European leagues

also the fact that the crowd is made up of crazy sjws. It attracts weak-minded people, who have no critical thinking skills. I don't know why people feel the need to fly lgbt or trans flags at a soccer game. It's just ridiculous. I hate how women's soccer has become some beacon for obnoxious, politically correct cows. It's hard to support it when it focuses so much on politics.

I agree. I think the European leagues, just like with the men, will be the centre of women's football.

@@procrastinatingpumaI agree, the NWSL has a lot of individual great players. Key word though is individual. This is a team sport, in which the European teams play it the right way: as a team. Watch any NWSL game and you’ll have players trying to dribble 4 on 1 and shoot shots from 30 yards outside the box. Like college. You’ll be benched if you do that in the WSL. And for the attendance I have to disagree. Watch a Barca / Real Madrid game lately? Tens of thousands of fans. An Arsenal vs. Chelsea match? Packed stadiums. Like I mentioned, the last Angel City game: stadium was maybe 40% filled. For a must win game. When, that stadium used to be full when Angel City first hit the scene. My point: dwindling audiences. Why are stadiums packed overseas and not here? Because the European leagues are putting high quality, TEAM, product on the pitch. And that’s exactly why these crowds are dwindling for the NWSL: the quality of soccer just isn’t there. Again, I truly want this league to shine! I live here! I can’t tell you how awesome it would be to go to a game and have 60,000-70,000 fans there going nuts for women’s soccer here like overseas. But again, I do have the utmost belief and confidence that the NWSL will get there one day too.

By getting a loan from the men’s soccer league…… or letting the men play in the league 😂😂😂😂😂

A winning side, not DEI will help Angel City fill the seats. Even when games are listed as sold out, BMO stadium is a third empty. When supporter groups don't show up, politics is not the answer.

They won’t get the viewership they think they will get. The league can only grow, but it won’t grow to the point of a billion dollar league.

Why the fight? It seems that US Women players are in a fighting mood and we (the audience) just want to enjoy great women soccer. With big audiences come all the good things to all women players (Money, recognition, power). But this constant fighting mood might be just doing the opposite....

*90% of Angel City and San Diego fan base are Latinos. In Portland is the LGBTQ community that fills the stadium. The rest of the teams don't have the support of their cities. People don't attend the matches in Texas, Orlando, New Jersey, Chicago, Washington, etc. The NWSL only has three cities that are doing great because of the number of Latinos who live in L. A and San Diego.*

I enjoy women futbol but i will never pay to watch it, all this we have to fight so the next generation don't have to is ridiculous, most men don't care about watching their games and they have little support from women, unless that change and i don't see how, they will never get the money they think they deserve.

When you say most men are you including yourself ? Men sports are about money I guess that’s ok. I think in my environment lot’s of men watch women’s soccer, they have daughters who play, I for one love watching women futbol more than the men.

@ademosthenes4911 10 месяцев назад
First, I stated that I enjoy women futbol, so your question is irrelevant, either you didn't read my comment, or you didn't put attention to my words. Second, all profesional sports are about money, that is why they are profesional. Third, in my environment men go see play their daughters or accompany them to see games, they would not watch a game by themselves, Fourth, I congratulate you if you are one of the few women that do watch futbol, if women futbol wants to grow they need more real support, not just the talk and do nothing like so many women/ activists/ feminist do @@mosijahi3096

You have your perspective, but the statistics collectively do not bear out your blanket assumptions as true. When people get the chance to watch women's sports, produced with high quality production like men's sports, broadly available, and shown in prime time (think Women's World Cup, Euros), resulting attendance, merch sales, and viewership grows exponentially.
@ademosthenes4911
@ademosthenes4911 10 месяцев назад
What statistics? and what does the world cup or Champions have to do with the NWSL? just out of curiosity what other women sports are you talking about? Other than tenis and golf what sports have large viewership? you hit the issue in the head when you said high quality product, NWSL is not a high-quality product right now, nor is it likely to be, now is a local league, most if not all the top talent is in Europe, if you take the time to watch some European leagues you will be entertained, if you watch the Champions even more, but here in USA futbol is not the passion is in the rest of the world, add the poor quality and there is just not enough interest.@@upotheke

The same with me, i like womens football and i see games on tv but i wouldnt pay to see a game, and its because womens football is so slow and not a lot of great plays, an example is the best players in the world for both genders, watch on RU-vid best plays of Messi and then watch best plays of putellas and youll see my point.
