Youthful energy and technical precision are combined in Kenneth MacMillan’s virtuoso ballet, set to Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto. Cast Yasmine Naghdi, Ryoichi Hirano, Anna Rose O'Sullivan and James Hay, Pianist Kate Shipway and Christopher Carr, staging, discuss their thoughts on Concerto. Subscribe to our channel and find out more here www.roh.org.uk....
Concerto marked the start of a new phase in Kenneth MacMillan’s career. He had recently become director of Berlin’s Deutsche Oper Ballet, and was keen to redefine the company and showcase its full range. He selected a score of youthful vivacity - Dmitry Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto no.2 in F, which was created to mark the 19th birthday of the composer’s son. Concerto was greeted with a standing ovation on its premiere in 1966 and MacMillan received immediate performance requests from ballet companies worldwide.
MacMillan’s choreography complements the precision and invention of Shostakovich’s score perfectly. In the energetic first movement, the corps de ballet marches en pointe in unison, in response to a military flourish in the music. A slow, sensuous Andante follows, featuring a pas de deux that was inspired by seeing Lynn Seymour, MacMillan’s friend and muse, warming up at the barre. The final movement brings the work to a spirited close, with a large corps de ballet dancing with quick, joyous steps. Jürgen Rose’s bright designs confirm the ballet’s warmth and energy.

She played for company class at the very first World Ballet Day in 2012. She's my favourite RB class pianist of all the ones I've heard. Kate Shipway!

Saw this broadcasted at the cinema last night - for a ballet with no story or characters, I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did! Shostakovich’s music and Macmillan’s choreography are brilliant together and the dancers and pianist did such justice to it.

It’s on DVD!! plus Enigma Variations and Raymonda Act 111. Mine arrived today and I’ve just watched the wonderful Concerto, which is saw many times in the 1960s and 1970s. A HUGE pity the ROH chose to NEVER put it on video or DVD until under 2 years ago. But I’ve got it now! Along with the equally amazing Symphonic Variations and Monotones, and Etudes, my 3 very favourite ballets now I’m in my 80s and have seen the Big Five SO many times, I now prefer these plotless very studied and placed steps in the choreography by Macmillan and the other two by Ashton of course. 13 Nov 2020.

For me, Jasmine Naghdi stole the show. From the first port de bras, she made such a simple movement so elegant and poignant. The coach’s instructions to “ignore the audience” and only focus on the music (shown in the cinema viewing) was excellent advice. Excellence from her partner, Ryoichi Hirano, as well- she showed such strength and control.

I was just corrected for putting Jasmine instead of Yasmine. Correct it quick before Margaret Lavender gets you. !!!!

Brilliant performances and production. Excellent insight from the extras and interviews. And for the benefit of those unfortunate to have missed it, repeated in Cinemas again next Sunday 10th, afternoon, at 2:00 pm. 'Concerto' was even better than I have seen previously. The slow second movement has to be seamless and Yasmine Naghdi, showed fully why she was promoted to principle in 2017, taking 'seamless' to a whole new dimension.

I first saw Concerto some 50 years ago on tour with the RBTC which Christopher Carr will undoubtedly remember. Fabulous to watch then as it is now. Bravo

I don't think she was listed as part of any of the main casts unfortunately :( Though there is a DVD recording of her and Steven McRae dancing the first movement, from a few years ago (and it's as beautiful as one can imagine)
