It's the most exciting new Porsche of the year - the Spyder RS. Think about all the great things about Porsche's incredible Cayman GT4 RS but with no top! Except, there's more to it. Porsche knows that owners will probably want this as a street car, and set it up as such. So it's hardcore where you want it, and softer where you want that! Is the Spyder RS worth the hype, the price, and the wait? And why don't I want to trade my personal Spyder 4.5L in for one?
Porsche provided flights, accommodations, meals, and some B-Roll footage for this video. They also let me drive a 959 from their museum, which is a different video entirely.

This is one of/maybe the best video of yours I have seen. As a Boxster owner, I used to think they were the budget Porsche. After owing and driving many many Porsche’s, you quickly realize that they and the Cayman are the purist sports cars you can buy. Boxster has been the most underrated and best kept secret in the sports car world for over 25 years! They are an unbelievable value and just incredible to drive, and this seems to be the best iteration so far! Thanks

yes but the manual gearbox in the 718 GT4/Spyder isn't that great. It needs shorter ratios. Don't get me wrong, I owned a 718 GT4 and loved it (now with a 992 GT3)
@RadDadisRad
@RadDadisRad 9 месяцев назад
The manual isn’t that fun. It’s rarely in the desired rpm no matter what gear. Ratios are too tall and you’re spending $20k to remedy which puts you well about a PDK which will never money shift you while driving aggressively. I’m a staunch manual driver but the 718 Spyder in a manual is not that fun in stock form. The PDK really makes the car fun.

I think I pretty much came to the same conclusion you did... I was "on the list" for the Spyder RS with a reasonable shot at getting one (including a significant ADM), but just pulled back my deposit. I currently have a '22 718 Spyder and somehow managed to get every option I wanted at MSRP... PCCBs, buckets, Burmester, PDLS+, classic interior, red top... and of course... a manual. No matter how good the GT4RS engine is in this package, I ultimately just can't give up the manual or everything else that I wanted. Happy to drive the "normal" Spyder with "just" 414-hp, and if I ever need to juice that up... I'll just do the same conversion you did :)

If you had an allocation but weren’t in the US you could’ve just bought the car at list anyway and flipped it for a huge profit, so now I can see where ADM has its benefits in that it keeps non-committed buyers out of the market. Which is ruined here in the UK by many dealers selling the limited-run cars only to the same “preferred clients” with resale incentives.

Alright now that I heard that comparison between your Deman car and the stock car... I can't believe I'm going to say it, but I think the punched out lower rev motor sounds more appealing. It seems less shrill and more... full throated. Really goes to show what a treat that thing is.

A valve controller alone changes all of the 718 GT cars. It’s the closed valves that suck the life out of it (and “elongate” the gears btw)
@CatchMeNever

It’s all down to personal preference I guess. For me I prefer the sound of this RS, but for real world use, faster acceleration, and manual gearbox Matts car beats this every day of the week.

@@cartergarnon6299don’t understand you here - you mean the valved exhaust not the engine valves presumably? Well, they open under revs and load regardless of where you’ve got the exhaust manually switched to. And the RS models have a different exhaust setup to the regular 4.0 GTS/GT4/Spyder anyway…

As a Spyder owner I can attest to Matt's words, however I do believe that the best bang for your buck is going to be owning the regular non RS version. It's plenty fun as it is, sexy as hell and hey it's already a naturally aspirated flat 6. Save those extra 80-100K, buy a cool exhaust, take the wife out to a nice dinner to justify why you bought a 100K+ convertible with a manual roof and you are golden.

I thought the RS would be the Spyder that I’d be willing to sell my 981 Spyder to obtain, but without a manual option and that brutal roof, I’m keeping my 981! I agree with Matt’s assessment (though he was referring to the 718) that the Spyder is the best car Porsche makes.

Owning a 981 Spyder as well I am also not convinced if it is worth it sacrificing this fantastic non OPF exhaust and the manual for the SRS. I am not sure if it would give me more emotions or is only much quicker which I don't need since I am not racing it.

Thanks for a great review! I am a happy owner of a 981 Spyder and I just came home from a 5000 km roadtrip in Europe. I haven't had the opportunity to compare my car with the 718 Spyder but I have honesty loved every minute in this car during these 3 weeks on all kind of roads. I would never switch to a car with a PDK as the manual gearbox in the Spyder is fantastic! The roof in the RS does not appeal to me as I think the roof on the Spyder is just on the limit to practical enough for daily use. I live I Sweden where the rain can surprise you in less than 15 minutes. The RS engine with the high revs and the performance is for sure on another level but I am fine with that. It would be interesting though to compare the 981 Spyder with the 718. I think the 981 is 120 kilos lighter but have 45 hp less. The sound is not as loud in the 718 but that can be fixed with an aftermarket exhaust I guess to get the same experience. It would be great to get your comments if anyone had the opportunity to compare these two cars ☺

Hey Matt, well done, and you are correct I came to your review because you have so much experience and seat time in the 718's. I knew that you have an opinion but at the same time objectively present the SRS both to highlight it's features but also to share any short comings. As a 718 Spyder owner with over 3 years of driving what I have agree it has to be one of the best Porsche experiences out there. I needed to know if the SRS was a worthy successor and I would have to say in some ways it is, but with a slightly different level of involvement, we accept the PDK but still struggle to give up that connectivity to the car when you shift your own gears. I guess that it is decision time!

Matt, love your reviews, I also have a 718 Spyder and it is a jewel that I would never get rid of. I am tempted to do the modification that you did with the closer gear ratio set and I may pull the trigger one day. The pleasure of this car with a manual gearbox is unparalleled. I have a BMW 1M that I also love to drive however they are two different cars. Maybe one day they will make a spider are with the RS engine and a manual transmission and every possible box will be ticked. Till then continue with your amazing videos maybe I’ll look you up the next time I’m in LA driving the canyon roads. Peace out from Canada

After driving a Cayman gt4 at the Porsche Experience, i fell in love. It feels like the perfect size and was able to move and stick to the road like nothing I’ve ever driven. Shout out to that place!

I really enjoy Matt & Zack's reviews. Keep up the good work. I seem to recall that the 718 GTS has the same weight, footprint and similar performance to a 997.1 Carrera2S... all cars get bigger and bigger.
