Why The Warriors Defense Dominates - Three Reasons It's Unique Among Switching Defenses

The NBA has had an influx of switch-heavy defenses over the past several years, and the Golden State Warriors is one of them. However, the Warriors are almost always at the top of the pack amongst these switch-happy schemes. What makes this defense better than other switching defenses, like the Miami Heat or the Los Angeles Clippers?
They do have Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins as lengthy yet mobile wing defenders, but they also have star offensive players like Steph Curry and Klay Thompson that can hold their own in a switching scheme. We go over the nuances of the Warriors' tactics in the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics in this video to show you what sets them apart.

Love this breakdown, well done. Only nit I'd pick is referring to Steph as a liability or one of the worse defenders. He may once have been but at this point is an elite defender. This is met with a lot of skepticism by those who watched his early years, or presume that since's he's a supernova on offense he must not be good on defense. But when we actually watch his play in recent years, he's become a bulldog who stays in front of his man, has very active hands, knows exactly where to be, and fights extremely hard. It's arguable that without any of that they would not have all those championships.

I wouldn’t go as far as “Elite” but he isn’t a liability anymore for sure. He’s a solid defender for sure.

Steph has been a very good defender, not quiet elite but a very good defender at the guard position, basically since his second mvp season. Since 2016 he has always been in the the top 7-10 guards among steals leaders and among defenders who negatively affect their matchups scoring efficiency

I'm sure it would be a lot easier defending against the warriors if steph wasn't there wearing down 2 to 3 opponents when he is playing offense. Imagine trying to make plays after mad sprinting and mostly failing to guard steph+klay+wigs+Poole.

@@DrawingTheDefense i got the warriors in six, Golden State is probably my favorite championship team because they have a beatiful offense that requires ball and player movement and their defense is elite because of their ability to play diffenernt types of defensive schemes such as zone or switching and traps.

Bjelica is a good defender. Slow of foot and limited for sure, he can't guard jitterbug guards and can be overpowered by elite post players, but he has quick hands, anticipates well and uses good angles to funnel his matchup into help. Joe Ingles is similar on defense. If I were a coach, I'd love having guys like that to come off the bench. They're smart players that are constantly underestimated by their opponents because of their lack of obvious athleticism. Put them in for 6 minutes at a time to give a starter a rest and watch as the other team tries to iso them into well contested shots.

Very well done. Seems like defense is an "after thought" , for the casual fan. However... upon diving deeper, it's the biggest reason, the Warriors won the chip this year. Thanks for proving a point, I try to get across to my friends and others.... DEFENSE WINS Championships!! ((If the other team can't score, you win) Very simple.

Thank you for highlighting the defense of GS, a very under rated aspect of what makes them great (I watched them eliminate my team this season and D was a big part of it) It is so funny to see GS fans just so willing to part with Dray, but Dray leads the team in assists, steals, blocks and was tied with Looney for Rebounds. There is no replacement for what Dray does (someone brought up Ben Simmons, but at least according to Embiid and others, Simmons is even on the same planet as Dray in terms of leadership qualities and being the alpha). Be careful what you wish for GS fans.
@DrawingTheDefense

How are we defining "worst" defenders? Defense is effort, time and teamwork. In Basketball you can only annoy the shooter, steal, or block. The last two are difficult and risky. Annoying shooters is the most reliable way to create chaos for the offense. So the worst defenders are those that miss their assignments more often. All the Warriors who played rarely miss assignments. The rest sat on the bench.
@kidkouga92
@kidkouga92 Год назад
I disagree there is plenty you can do. You can emphasize certain spots on the court to force the attacker away from the spots their best at and into spots where they have less options. You can drive them into help defenders. As you saw in the video you can occasionally deny certain players. It's not always about stopping the attacker, sometimes its about manipulating the offense into low percentage scoring positions or being forced to make a dangerous play. But your final assessment is correct. You do want to create as much chaos for the offense as possible
@Dryltd
@Dryltd Год назад
@@kidkouga92 What you described I would still call annoying the player. Because skilled players will still find a way to get to their spots and split two defenders. But I understand what you are saying but those actions are hard to quantify. So our disagreement is more semantic. But if stat needs would count up those actions I would love to see the data.

Well prior to Draymond's injury, Warriors was the best defensive team in the league. With a healthy core of interchangeable defensive line ups of Loon Dray Wiggs Klay GP2 Curry OPJ, any opponents have no chance in a 7 game series against the best offense and best defense in the playoffs. The Dubs.

Is there any counter to this defense? I personally thought that taking advantage of the mismatches was the solution but you pointed out otherwise. Does Boston need to clean up their offensive execution? And should Boston run both Horford and Time lord from here on out?
@DR-qd7go
@DR-qd7go 2 года назад
Timelord is playing at 60% with his knee and Horford is terrible in the post. The dubs put Klay on Horford to take away those 3pt attempts. It wasn’t that horford played bad in game 2, the warriors just took him completely out of the offense and he had no open looks. JB and JT are going to have to have a Kobe nuclear game as the Boston supporting cast will not shoot 15/23 from 3 again, let alone get that many open looks. In game 1, Draymond played free safety and that led to many open 3’s as they dared Smart, Horford, and White to beat them from 3. With the return of Gary Payton II, the warriors defense got even better. He harass JB (as oladipo did) and he actually leads the league in steals per 36 minutes. The Celtics can win this series, but Tatum will have to have Steph Curry level offensive production.
@DrawingTheDefense
@DrawingTheDefense 2 года назад
There is always a counter to these types of things, it’s more of a matter of whether you can execute the counter or if your roster has an effective counter available. For the Celtics, one counter would be to make Jaylen Brown a screener, have him slip the screen and then hope that his athleticism will allow him to dunk over the help defense. You know Draymond won’t be the help defender since Draymond is guarding him so as long as Looney isn’t the one at the rim he should be able to dunk over anyone else

Having Draymond guard Jaylen Brown was big for the warriors. But that leaves a mismatch for Thompson and Horford on the block. I expect the Celtics to take advantage of that mismatch in game 3.
@DrawingTheDefense
@DrawingTheDefense 2 года назад
I hear ya, but I really don’t think the answer to the Celtics problems is having Horford back down Klay. I think the Celtics really need to focus on spreading the floor much better. Cutting with purpose is okay but that was a pretty sloppy effort overall I thought. Also, they have to improve on those transition plays, I think that just killed their motivation to get back in the game. I agree Draymond on Jaylen has been a great way to shut him down. Draymond is incredible
@DR-qd7go
@DR-qd7go 2 года назад
@@DrawingTheDefense horford is actually 30% fg% in post ups and only 0.5 points per possession. He’s terrible. The warriors would love for horford to post up Klay in lieu of Horford shooting 43% from 3 pt land uncontested

Boston's offense is also too concentrated on tatum and brown making them very guardable by golden state's small line up. Horford doesn't live in the paint either, he is more of a forward trapped in a slow center's body.
