Why the whole internet is talking about this new Dewalt Tape Measure

It’s a nice idea in principle however given how disposable tapes are due to durability/wear and tear I can’t help but think this is just needlessly pushing up the cost of tapes

It doesn't bother me to see you allowing your tape to snap back into its case. However, it would bug the heck out of me if you were to do it to mine. (I've bent the hook on my tapes so that they read accurately.) Of course, a lot depends on what I use the tape for. I have an old 25' Stanley that I used when framing houses. There, I wouldn't care if my tape were off by 1/6". However, the tapes in my shop are used for making furniture. If you were to bend the hook on one of those tapes, I wouldn't appreciate it. I wouldn't disown you, but I might ask you to use your own tape in the future.

As a 60 year old, I appreciate the light. Which brings me to the headlight. Headlights are real nass like. As far as the return, let it bang like prom night.

I could use one these . I can't tell you how many times I ve been in a dimly lit house. Trying to measure some base boards but can't hardly read my tape measure. Of course it don't help that was a welder for ten years . Great video see you on the next one Clint

That snap of the tape my good man gives the same satisfaction to a carpenter that it does to slam a side arm back in its holster to a real live nice like cowboy type folk.😂

Now you can measure and cut with your compound miter saw while the power is out! It would be cool if it charged the battery a little every time you pull the tape out to measure.

I avoid the tape slap only because I don't want to catch my skin. And over the lifetime it does save the tape ends from failing. The rivets oval out.

FFS, if you don't know why you need a light on a tape measure, some people have to measure under sinks or other plumbing. Some people have to measure cable runs under a production line. Some people are running conduit for electricity in a space without electricity. Also, I'm 55 and I still work, but my eyes try not to. So a little light on the tape measure helps me to see how effed up I cut that 2x4. When you see something that exists, and a group of people love it, and you don't understand why; you might want to start asking yourself why someone might find it useful. Or you can tell me to esad, it's all good.

Steve Ramsey did a video snapping the tape in 10,000 times. Don't remember what manufacturer was for the tape measure. Anyway, as I remember, the tape survived and the end device still was as accurate after 10,000 snaps as it was after 1. For $35 , i will pass on this tape. Nass vid!

I've got one of these tapes. It's nice, but I think it's funny how it says it's got a 17' reach but it will only do around 13'.

For that kind of money, they could have put a storage spot for the cord that you are surley going to loose.

I like it. But I wish they had the fractional makings. What better use of a light that to be able to light up smaller marking?

I bought the 16' with the detachable magnet and really liked it but once this one came out I rushed out to buy it and was able to put the 16' detachable magnet on my 25' LED tape! So basically paid $30 for the tape, built-in light, and a removable magnet! 3 features for the price of two!!!

That plug is a micro USB, the "A" USB is the one that plugs into the wall-wart.

Yea milwaukees version of this is SUPER HEAVY. No thanks. I was in lowes today and as much as I LOVE my Milwaukee magnetic wide blade and lufkin G2 shockwave - the new Irwin “straight line” tapes are AWESOME. The most solid stand out I literally couldn’t believe it. And unlike Stanley they actually have numbers on the back of the ruler too!

If you actually use a tape measure you let her snap unless your out 15 feet then you just slow it down a little before you let it snap.

I love this new toughseries tape measure one thing that irritated me was it didn't come with the detachable magnet so I took the magnet off my smaller regular toughseries tape measure I like that it lights up the tape Good video Clint don't know why so many hate this tape measure 1 thing that irritated me why couldn't dewalt put the fractions on the Atomic series on the toughseries.. just like the toughseries the Atomic series will also accept the magnet that comes with the Toughseries @Tool Review Zone

Milwaukee came out with one of these a few months ago, it’s 500 lumins and has 2 brightness settings and is usb rechargeable. I love it, working in basements and crawspaces or dark places I no longer have to hold a light and take a measurement lol very awesome!! I found it at home depot one day in Hamilton Ohio back in like February

I use a tape measure 5 or 6 days a week and am pretty hard on them. My favorite is the cheap Stanley 25' thumb lock, yellow plastic ones. I probably drop it a few times everyday. I wear cargo pants and the pockets are angled so the tape falls a lot. I've never been one for adding a belt to carry my tape and few hand tools I use. My 5 in 1 and knife fit in my back pocket just fine, so the tape drops a few times big deal lol. They take a beating, last forever and a day, and are super cheap!

Black & Decker had a good reputation in the 60s and soul junk in the seventies

DeWalt did start making really nice high end USB cables for charging your phone. I bought one and it's very well constructed.

That broken end is a male USB micro-B connector, not “USB-A” as you said in the video or “mini” as you wrote on screen. The rectangular end is USB-A male but you definitely weren’t calling them out for that end. If you’re going to have such a strong opinion on it then maybe it’s time for a refresher course. ;) USB-A is the common, old, original rectangle on hubs and host devices (PCs, consoles, etc). USB-B is for the peripheral side and comes in multiple variations. The full sized USB-B is the squarish one beveled on two corners commonly found on printers, scanners, cable modems, or old external drives. USB mini-B is the trapezoid-like connector, wider on one side and staggered down to a shorter side. It’s used on most portable devices before micro USB replaced it. Mainstream examples: Motorola V3 RAZR flip phone, BlackBerry phones, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3 controllers, most mid-2000s digital cameras, and the Wii U Pro Controller. USB micro-B is the one we all call “micro USB” that usually looks like a super-thin D-shape. It’s the one DeWALT uses here that is slowly being replaced by USB-C. DeWALT also sells “reversible” micro-USB cables that have an elongated jewel shape (pointy on the sides) which fits the D-shaped female connector either way. USB-C is the slightly larger oval-shaped one we use today that is reversible. It also allows for USB-C to C cables that do away with the one-way host/peripheral connection.

Depending on whether you are building cabinets and fine furniture if you are framing let it snap but I was taught to ride your finger so it doesn't snap!!! Just being honest if you want accuracy don't let your tape snap back

I'm only going to point out how many other tools that have lights on them a.k.a. circular, saw routers whatever it may be how many times have people on RU-vid appreciated a bright light pointing down on their work area with a certain tools. Why should a tape measure be any different

Bring a flashlight and buy a normal Stanley. This was never a problem I've run into. As a welder, that usb would be destroyed very quickly.

I don’t remember the brand but I had a tape measure with the same concept 35yrs ago. Difference was when you looked the tape the light come on.

I agree that this should've had USB-C port. Especially for a $40+ dollar tape measure. DeWalt saving a few cents on that is ridiculous.

Why the old charger interface? The design lead time probably determined when they had to buy a 'lot' of Mini-USB interfaces for the tape measure. That might have been five years ago for example, so the lot of interfaces was purchased then, and by the time the tape measures made it to market, the Micro-USB port went out of style.

3 hours of light time seems plenty to me, you only need it on when reading a measurement so that would take forever and a day to drain the battery. That being said, if I'm in a dark area I have on my headlamp so this is just a gimmick to me.

I own and like most Dewalt tools that take a charger. This ain't one of 'em, why do I want a super dim light on my tape measure... Crescent makes the best tape measures, they have a coating/color scheme on them that shows up clearly in faint light, also has the best standout and is tough as nails, go with that and ignore this.

A USB-C connector would give no advantage for charging time. Yes they can provide a higher power level, but charge is limited by the tape measure's internal electronics and the battery specs.

that looks like a micro-usb not a usb type A. but yeah I never liked ny of those... but next to usb type C if it was a USB type A it would be really strong... the micro USB just sucks all around.

Snapping the tape back doesn’t bother me one bit. There designed to take abuse and if it wears out, there cheap (just like some people) and I’ll by another. People love to have something to complain about.
