Glad to see Troy getting some well deserved attention outside of the DIY community. I had the pleasure of visiting his shop over a year ago and was really impressed with the wide verity of offerings he has. I feel in love with one of his Fostek speakers, and he offered it as a DIY kit. I built the speaker and absolutely love it.

I’ve seen several criticisms of this speaker based on its lack of efficiency for the tube crowd. Keep in mind that most aspects of speaker design is coming up with the best compromise. Can you get higher efficiency? Yes. But what do you give up? High efficiency speakers usually are lacking in bass. The only way I know of to get high efficiency and good bass extension is with larger woofer enclosures. For example, JC has a design using an 18” back loaded horn. That design is around 105 db, but it is also a huge speaker. I don’t know of any method for getting high efficiency out of woofer enclosures that have decent bass extension. To be honest, getting the bass response this speaker has in an enclosure of this size with reasonable efficiency is impressive.

visually they are beautiful , and also different from the norm going by horn speakers , the smoothness of the wood work is incredible , the little details as for example the lift on the bottom end of the speaker that connects visually direct with the rounded wood profile that rises to the woofer , very well done ! plus , they are not that big for a horn speaker ! which for me at least is a plus point .

However, the Polycells are large speakers - 57 x 20 1/4 x 14. I think these are great speakers - the sound seems to come out effortless. I took out one of the horn speakers and check them out on the internet. I found they are $70 speakers (each). The base goes down to about 50 dB. Anything lower and the base gets rough. with a properly designed horn, with good geometry and construction, and the right compression driver, you're simply wrong, objectively. there is no downside to a good horn. I agree electrostatics have some great things going for them too. but a truly good horn (which many are not - these are among the best of the best though) is unbeatable. the timbre, FR, directionality, dynamics, INSANELY LOW distortion, is all as good as it gets. no one that says they don't like horns has ever heard JC speakers, or Geddes speakers, or other top tier well integrated horn designs of a good geometry, with a proper crossover design and/or proper EQ.

@Artcore103
@Artcore103 25 дней назад
@@MsCorbacho it's all in the design and woodwork, and yes it is expensive. JC makes and sells cost no object speakers at various price points... he NEVER selects drivers based on cost, he's NOT cost savings here. He tests hundreds of drivers and then chooses what to use based on his objective measurements and subjective impressions. Cost does NOT correlate with quality or performance characteristics - they are almost completely unrelated. If a more expensive driver worked better, he'd use it. Look at his website, he has COUNTLESS driver tests with TONS of measurements and details about each one. If a cheaper driver measures (in frequency response or distortion terms, and looking at various SPL's) and integrates better, then he will use it. That's doing proper design work, instead of thinking "cost more equals better!". He sells the cad files cheap so you can't really argue with the value; it's what his time and equipment is worth, based on the amount of investment from him, and based on demand, and he has plenty of demand. You can find some cheaper deals when not buying made-to-order speakers - if you check his website, he has some stock of some things, that go for less. His driver selection process is second to none I assure you. He's compared expensive field coil 15" woofers to a normal one, and the normal one performed better and had lower distortion, for example, for way less money.

This is NOT a horn speaker. This is a speaker with a horn tweeter. Probably the most beautiful horn tweeter I have ever seen, at that. This speaker only uses a 10 inch woofer. Not high efficiency, because it simply can not be, due to the laws of physics. It's also just another speaker based on the theme of the econowave. Trying to match directivity in the horizontal plane (at least), at the crossover point. That's about 1.3 kHz for most 10 inch. It's a beautiful work of art, but all these type 2-ways are a serious compromise. There are better ways to do things, especially in view of the $15k/price/per pair.

You're correct...................... Function follows form here. The form du'jour is narrow towers, which obviously limits the width of the woofer & horn. That's the 2-fold problem here. Because it's too narrow, the woofer can't get low without having big excursion, rubber surround, inefficient, slow and power hungry like they are, compared to the complete opposite type driver their trying to mesh. Because it's too narrow, the horn can't reproduce much at all in the mid-range. Combined with a 1" throat & driver, they just can't get down into the vocals where horns are so great. Small subwoofers with narrow horns is NOT the way to go. "There are better ways to do things, especially in view of the $15k/price/per pair." Acid Jazz, Funk & Brass 🔈🔉🔊

He has many designs, and these are among the smaller ones. I agree... 15" is the correct size of woofer, and he has much bigger horns that cross WAY lower. So your comment is irrelevant, except that yes... the price is STEEP.

music makes u cry, not the gear. if a song makes u cry from 10 dollar speakers in a 1989 k10 truck. don’t expect much more from some 50 grand system etc.. 😎

Jay……try not to damage your reputation……this speaker has a 6db peak at 8khz…..that’s NOT good and if you can’t hear that, that’s quite damaging.

That’s a funny way to read the graph. Thats really not a problem. As you can see, that vanishes in an in-room situation and you can always eq that if it bothers you
@Artcore103
@Artcore103 25 дней назад
No they don't, not even by Jay's measurements let alone JC's. 3-4db at most is the peak, and guess what? there's this magical thing called EQ most audiophiles FOOLISHLY neglect. All horns need EQ'd... virtually all speakers need EQ'd. A complex crossover design IS essentially an electrical EQ of sorts to begin with, but is not the best way to address small issues... DSP is better for that.
@anthonynoto9336
@anthonynoto9336 25 дней назад
@@Artcore103 EQ is a phase function….linear or non linear…..doesn’t matter. When you shift phase to modify response, you inherently create a phase anomaly. Take some time to research the recording process to understand some fundamentals as to why specific microphones and positions are chosen to specifically avoid having to EQ as much as possible. That bump is a resonance btw…..excite that frequency with a specific note or tone and it’s going to grate your ear drums. None of this comes from a position of audiophoolery or the sighted listening you folks are now practicing and trying to pass off as objective.
@Jayiyagi
@Jayiyagi 25 дней назад
That is not a resonance as clearly shown in the impedance graph as well as the waterfall graph
@anthonynoto9336
@anthonynoto9336 25 дней назад
@@Jayiyagi look at RCFs own measures of the ND350…..the highly smoothed impedance and response was unable to hide the blip at 8k which is obviously excited by Joe’s horn. We could argue all day here…..Joe’s a talented designer…..but this speaker is better served for high output crowd listening. As an engineer, one look at that graph tells me 20 minutes max for me of critical listening in the mid field. YMMV.
