From what I understand, the 2006 DVDs had the laser disc transfers of the theatrical films that you own on laser disc (apparently, the transfer quality on the DVDs is poor). Someone please correct me, if I'm wrong. As for the 4K/blu ray discs, regardless of the video quality, those cases/artwork are beautiful. Although, I do wish Return of the Jedi had artwork more similar to New Hope and Empire.

I have those DVD's where you had to buy a re-release of the Special Editions and they were advertised as including the Original Unaltered version of each film. The "Original Unaltered Version" that they included is Pan and Scanned from some weird TV broadcast version that looks like it was then taped from a version of an old school camcorder pointed at a TV. It's almost hilarious just how degraded the version they released was, even the audio sounds like someone took a Mono soundtrack and just doubled it, instead of it actually being in stereo.
@beyondsourgrounds5602
@beyondsourgrounds5602 Месяц назад
I have those DVDs and the source was indeed from the laserdisc transfers. The aspect ratio is cropped and the transfer was obsolete compared to standard DVDs of that time period. They're treated more like special feature bonuses. They're watchable, certainly better quality than watching a VHS tape, but unacceptable given how far we've come technologically speaking.
@PiperSparkles
@PiperSparkles Месяц назад
@@SpeedBoost I still have these DVDs and while they are not great, your description of them is way overblown. They are literally just straight transfers from the 1993 Laserdisc masters. They are letterbox, not pan & scan. They are as good as you could possibly expect a 1993 laserdisc master to be.

Team Negative 1 did an incredible job scanning and restoring the 35mm prints. I have them all downloaded in their most recent versions. Star Wars and Return of the Jedi are both insanely high quality. Empire was the toughest job for them as the only print they had access to was in very bad condition. All the thanks in the world to them.

One thing I liked that Lucasfilm did was digitally recomposite all of the effects shots, which got rid of the matte lines. Most would have just left the matte lines in, or just paint them out instead of going back to the negative. The other thing is the speeders on Hoth look a lot better, as they looked like cardboard in the original version. I watch either the Harmy version or the Oohteedee D+ version.

It is unfortunate that the original versions of the original trilogy are not available officially on 4K Blu-Ray and most of the time I do my best to support the official releases of the movie's on home video but as you said there was a DVD release from 2006 that had the so called "Theatrical Version" on disc two of each of the movie's but in reality they were mostly just the master files for the 93/95 Laserdisc releases just ported over to DVD with only one minor change to Star Wars to exclude the Episode IV A New Hope subtitle from the opening crawl of the film to match the OG release of the movie but aside from that your only getting the Laserdisc versions from 93/95 which means not only do you have the big black bars on the top and bottom of the screen but you also get the big black bars on the left and right of the screen as well because it's a non-anamorphic letterboxed version of the movie's that were intended for viewing on a 4:3 television and not a 16:9 screen and then I do have the official Star Wars Skywalker Saga boxset from 2020 but those are the latest versions of the Special Edition's of the movie's with the CGI and all. Now back to what I was saying at the start of this comment it is unfortunate that there hasn't been a proper official release of these versions of the movie's but I do own these versions of the movie's you have on my computer as I do not have them burned on 4K Blu-Ray discs like you do but most of the time I just plug my computer into my TV and watch these on my TV and I don't usually support any kind of homemade or bootleg stuff but I did make one exception and that was for the Star Wars Holiday Special because there is no official home video release for that whatsoever and there probably never will be but it was something I saw at my local comic convention and I picked it up there but aside from that I don't usually support buying a bootleg DVD or Blu-Ray of anything unless they have been gifted to me or I did it myself with only the intent for my own personal home viewing.

Dude I had (and still) that gold VHS box set too, and Return Of The Jedi was my most watched tape as well! Those 1997 special editions are also lost versions of Star Wars as George Lucas has since changed those versions too. I don't think most people realize how sophisticated the world of bootlegging is becoming. There's an Australian company that's making factory pressed bootlegs of old Anchor Bay DVDs. I picked up Freaked, Near Dark, and Dutch. I have a ton of legit Anchor Bay releases and the bootlegs are basically the same quality as the offical discs. And those Warner Bros Tales From The Crypt box sets are factory pressed bootlegs too.

I've had downloaded the Harmy versions and the Oohteedee D+ versions. I prefer the Oohteedee versions as he takes the official Disney 4k versions and then used scans of theatrical film to replace the offensive CGI. Though the latest versions aren't perfect. As there are some shots that are lower quality where I know there are better quality scans floating around. I have the files on a USB drive connected to my blu-ray player. That way I don't have to mess with burning discs. So hopefully he'll do a new version some time. If Disney would put out the theatrical versions in 4k, I'd gladly buy it.

I'm pretty sure that Han was the only one who shot. If I remember correctly, Greedo's gun didn't go off, and they just decided to go with that as their take. So, in the original theatrical trilogy, no one shot first, because it was only Han who shot.

I went to the theater, in the 90's and saw Star wars on the big screen. The theater was totally empty. My parents were divorced, so this was when my dad would take us all out for the day. Because I wanted to be an actor he took me to a bunch of stage plays. Mainly show tunes, which I loved and I still love musicals. He also took us other places of course. Once to the St.Patrick's day parade and a car show. My grandpa, who again was a total movie nerd loved Star wars and owned the box set with all 3 movies on VHS, which included "the making of" behind the scenes footage. So I watched that box set for a while, over and over again. I saw the phantom menace and was disgusted, and again as a horror fan and general movie fan, in the 2000's I was like "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?! Star wars sucks, Halloween sucks, Friday the 13th sucks, Child's play sucks. What the fuck?!" So I ended up reluctantly watching Attack of the clones and that is when I went "I am so disgusted I hence forth am BOYCOTTING Star wars. The Star wars franchise is officially DEAD TO ME now." Now I know a lot of fans can look past the prequels, will watch the original 3 movies and put the prequels out of their minds, but it so tainted my love for Star wars, and the fact that Lucas refused to release the ORIGINAL FILMS the way they were intended, it's been decades and decades now, going on 3 decades that I have not watched a single star wars movie. My brother had to force me to watch The Mandalorian, and I was like "This is great. I'm shocked. This is actually good!!!" and Yoda has always been my favorite character, so I loved seeing baby Yoda...so now I am finally going "I need to give the first 3 movies a rewatch all these years. I need to end the boycott." lol. But I will never watch the prequels again, or any of the other recent movies. So ya, I'm gonna be watching the original 3 movies relatively soon, eventually,lol and I am hopeful all the altered stuff doesn't make me go "F**** YHOU! F*** YUUUO! I'm done! I'm boycotting again!" lol. I hope I can just accept it, live with it, and move on and still enjoy the movies.

That being said, I think the Special Edition of the original '77 film is actually closer to Lucas' original vision. I personally feel that these editions still don’t get the colors right. I have the technidisc 1994 pressing of a new Hope on Laserdisc and the colors on that film along with the quality of transfer really just presents such a vibrate image I can’t watch any other copy. The bonus dvd edition did finally add the original opening and closing credits which had never been on legal home video so that’s probably the only other edition i even bother to watch for the original film. As far as sound goes it’s a nightmare so I’ll just say the only original versions of the audio are all on pan and scan copies. Beta for the mono and the cav/ standard play laserdiscs for the stereo. I do say that the film that had the current edition do the most to make it better would be empire. If you watch the original cuts empire is easily the worst film.

His recent appearance for an award ceremony alongside Coppola at the Cannes Film Festival confirms he's not wavered since '97 in saying that as the auteur, he wants to bring the OT up to his standards and doesn't care for the exact original versions whose problems mostly came out of lack of time and budget. He also can't "get his head out of his ass" and release them because he wouldn't, nor could he since after so many 35mm theater prints the original negatives were in rough shape by 1994, so for the '97 edit they permanently preserved it with the edits applied, so it's just cold facts that it won't happen officially.

In 3 years Star Wars will be 50, guess if they ever do this properly that would be the time

Bootlegs can be touchy subject. I try not to support them. BUT if a movie is NOT available on physical media, I would be willing to get the bootleg. AND if it DOES get an official release, I would then replace it. Example...Prey. I did buy the bootleg on ebay from China. When it did finally get released on 4K, I bought it. Most recently I bought a bootleg of Song of the South on bluray. I highly doubt it will EVER get a release. I also got a bluray of Bright (with Will Smith). But it's not actually a bootleg. It is a Promo copy I found online. But, yeah, these Star Wars movies need proper releases. I agree that Lucas needs to get his head out of his ass! To simply deny the fans the ability to own the theatrical versions is uncalled for.

Imo, the best looking versions I have found is D+77, D+80 and Harmy's Despecialized Return of the Jedi v3.1. The files is not that difficult to find online.

You shouldn't feel 'guilty' about having those. I've bought a TON of legal media over the years. But when media producers deliberately hold back content from The People to even purchase, I don't consider it 'theft' to try to restore and reproduce, as these fans have done. What's overlooked is corporate theft. In the early years of this Nation, intellectual property went to Public Domain after 25--30 years. And it was only in the early 70's that corporations (like Disney) heavily lobbied Congress to extend copyrights to an insane 100 years; essentially letting corporate property outlive humans. In an earlier America, all 3 of the original Star Wars films would've already been Public Domain over a decade ago. ... And then when Disney would put out trash like the Acolyte or Kenobi, WE (anyone) could put out our own "early days of Star Wars" mythology, books and movies in competition. ... Instead, Lucas's incredible stories are captive of a woke media corporation gone mad, and we have to be 'happy' with their morally bankrupt viewpoints being rammed into what used to be a 'family-friendly story'. The same goes for those Ninja Turtles, btw (created in 1983: 40 years ago).

The 90s cgi, the Jedi rocks song , all the distractive crap in Mos Eisley, seeing Jabba and the tail walk, Vader saying noooo and Greedo shooting at all makes the SE stink. The originals are better. Not to to mention the censorship of the blaster shots on the Death Star when they go into the control room and the cell block.

George Lucas is an idiot, you can't erase or make people forget that the Original editions of this Trilogy don't exist. I still own the old VHS's and 2006 dvds of the Original versions of this Trilogy. Great Video 😀

I think some of the original negatives where destroyed during the making of the special editions, so it might be impossible to release the original version even if they wanted to. Also, already in 1977 there was 3 different versions of Star Wars showing in theaters, so what version is correct?

nice flex. not a controversial choice at all (empire is a favor of most OG fans). they will never get release though. pretty sure it's in Disney's contract. I bet the don't even own the original unaltered negatives. I wonder if they even exist any more..

They absolutely exist. Despite what George wants people to think, I don't buy into the idea that the original camera negatives of The Star Wars trilogy were lost or destroyed after the special editions came out in 1997. Even the elements for the Star Wars Holiday Special exists somewhere lol.
