The San Jose Galleon was sunk by the British in the early 1700s, taking with it the richest treasure cargo ever lost at sea, and it would take another 300 years before it would be seen again. In 2015, the Colombian government claimed to have found the shipwreck, but nearly a decade later, the excavation has still not started because of a number of claimants who dispute Colombia's claim to the loot.

The most remarkable thing in this story to me is that a company was able to sue a country
@h.princetv8236
@h.princetv8236 3 месяца назад
Agree. Albeit it makes lots of sense once you realize countries are public companies. It has to have a legal name and structure to buy, sell, etc (like a private company), thus anyone can sue a country as it if was a private company

What I think as a dutch/colombian. The us just wants money lol. Colombia found it themselve. Spain stole the money in the first place so they have no right. I think as a gesture to respect some pieces should be send to Bolivia but the rest goes to Colombia. They also suffered underneath spain and their money got stolen as well. The boat is in their land and for that reason theirs.

IMHO I think the gold/treasure belongs to the country it was taken from. Not the looters, perhaps some to the ones finding, but not the looters.

The indigenous people of Bolivia on that treasure that's who should get it it's ridiculous that billions of dollars were stolen from all these different cultures around the world during colonialism in these people that countries that were starting and building these colonies think that they are still think that they are entitled to the stuff this is ridiculous it belongs to the indigenous culture and these people need deserve to be paid and brought out of poverty

The most remarkable thing in this story is that the San Jose Galleon wreck had gold coins on board when it sank ... that would indicate that the Spanish Empire coined gold nearby Portobelo [nowaday in Panama] That leads me to some questions: 1) Where did the gold come from? 2) Where was this gold coined? 3) and if the gold was coined there: Why? Why not take the gold from *Panama* to Spain and coin it there? Hint: The Gold-Rush in Panama of the early 16th Century that lasted from 1503 to 1727 But still my questio is: WHY did the Spanish Empire coined the gold in Panama? Last question: Why does the Columbian Government not recover the treasure? I guess that Columbian Government knows the San Jose Galleon was a diversionary maneuver and the bulk of all the gold transported reached Spain securely.

Ships that sunk in any waters belong to the nation that it sailed for unless proven it's cargo is stolen from another nation and in that case should be conficated by the victim nation!

If the treasures found in the Columbia waters and the ship San Jose's Admiral commandeered to rob it from another country who owns it,then, the rightful owner of that treasure should be returned with a fee maybe for the Contractor who can take it out from the sea bed. I believed it's fair enough.

As far as looking at the facts, the only real claim is from Spain - is it´s gold, from its viceroyalties. All was Spanish: The mine, the ship, the country of origin of the gold, the destination of the Gold, the crew, the gold.
@Betweoxwitegan

@@dodid04 potential claims, Spain, Bolivia, Colombia American corporation & Britain, in my eyes the most logical thing is to give it back to the indigenous Bolivians who created the wealth because if thwy produced it under indentured servitude then Spain has no rights to the resource or if they claim rights then they should be made to pay substantial reperations to the natives, then if the ship was holding onto illegal goods produced via slavery then it had no right to transport them and thus it's sinking in Colombia waters grants Colombia the right to the vessel but not the material gold and also Colombia would have no right to give away 50% of the gold valuation, only the proceeds from the vessel itself, Britain has no claim as they merely sunk the ship and if they didn't retrieve the assets then thats on them. Therefore I think it only makes sense to reimburse the American corporation from future proceeds of the vessels sale, fees or generated income, allow Bolivia to keep the rights to the Spanish vessel for facilitating the expedition in their sovereign territory but pay a portion of generated proceeds say 5% to Spain since it's their vessel and give the native people of Bolivia 100% of the gold value, obviously this will never happen though.
