Why this $6,400 Hasselblad is the slowest camera I’ve ever loved

Hasselblad’s latest digital camera, the 907X 50C, is a 740 gram metal box that can serve as a stand alone medium format digital camera or as a digital back for Hasselblad V System cameras made from 1957 onwards. At $6,400 it is the smallest digital medium format body Hasselblad has ever made, but its unique form factor takes time and patience to get used to.

This is a great note! Thanks, bud ~ for all the comparison shots between the 907X, A7c, and iPhone I was using the Hasselblad 80mm F/1.9 on the 907X and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L (with a metabones EF - E mount T adapter) on the A7c. -b
@MusicBent
@MusicBent 3 года назад
She did preface the comparison that it doesn’t really make sense because of the sensor size difference. Sensor size does not directly affect DoF, but it can change the circle of confusion. Long story short, the math is quite complicated, but even if DoF and viewing angle remain constant, the look of the image can be different.
@riemjann1
@riemjann1 3 года назад
@@MusicBent Yes, but focal length and aperture matter anyways. A photo @90mm f1.2 on medium format would of course have a blurrier background than a photo @16mm f4 on full frame, but that wouldn't be caused by only the difference in sensor size. I think Becca's 90mm f1.9 lens on the CFV sensor (crop factor 0.79, so about 71mm FF equivalent) and the 50mm f1.2 used on the A7c are reasonably close to make an at least somewhat accurate comparisons on the photo's looks though - that just wasn't evident from the video alone.

I own one, find it makes me go back to when I started learning photography in 1977, everything was manual and no post correction. So every single shot needs to be calculated and you really need to know what you want. When you get a good shot, so it is so rewarding. I haven’t touched my Sony A7r4 since I got this last November. I've had a similar experience. I recently bought a Nikon FM3 -- manual everything. An FM I bought circa 1979 was my first real camera, and I made some pictures that I'm pretty happy with. But it was stolen after a couple of years, and I've "upgraded," gone digital, etc, and in the process got away from the time and intentionality that preparing a shot in the old days required. When I got the FM3 not long ago, I had to re-learn taking the time to calculate exposures, think through composition and so on. It's been a good experience.

It's also interesting how the A7C is seen as "keeping up with the Hasselblad" (6:30). The A7C was roughly 1/4 of the price and came out at around the same time. So is it the A7C that's "keeping up" or is it the Hasselblad that's taking similar photos to a much cheaper camera, exposing it as a device that's charging more than it's worth? The way I see it, it's the Hasselblad that's falling behind.

I am doing nude art photography. I had a Hasselblad 500C (from 1956) wich I used up until 4 years ago... and it stil works flawlessly... Now I have a "newer" one.... A hasselblad 403 CW from 1991... and yes.. I consider it new (and not only me) :) Of course they are film cammeras, but I would NEVER use a normal digital camera instead.... Having this digital cammera would be a dream... but yeah... price is a pain. But do not wory... even the one from 1956 is stil valued at 1000+ USD... and the 503 one... I guess I could swing it for 2.5k$ ... so yeah... considering all this... the 6.5k is not even that much.... for a Hasselblad :)

I'm sorry but this camera seems utterly pointless. I can't fathom how the 'slow' experience of using this camera can be thought of as anything other than poor design/engineering. If you want that kind of experience, why not get any other camera and just, for example, turn-off autofocus or auto WB and force yourself to set them manually for each shot. At least then when you *do* want speed, it's just a couple of button presses away. The only other advantages seem to be the colour science and the depth of field, but much of that could be replicated with Lightroom and a good lens, respectively. Just seems like a device that's designed to look nice on a shelf first, and be a camera second.

you say that you don't mind the image 'grain' using a high ISO in low light, but what you're referring to is digital noise, not grain. Image grain is an optical texture of processed photographic film. Digital images can only attempt to mimic the appearance of analogue film, and not very convincingly either

This is the go-to excuse for the ever shrinking, anachronistic camera communities out there. It's "relaxing". It's about the "experience". They've long surrendered crucial points such as photo quality, focus accuracy, reliability, versatility, and everything else, all of which can lead to irritation more than relaxation. A very niche hobby. Spending minutes at a time trying to get a photo while the camera focus breathes like the wee-wee of an excited dog (that also doubles as a fax machine) while everyone is staring at you takes a certain type of confidence. It being shot at waist level doesn't help.

When you compare a Hasselblad camera to a cell phone camera with the same megapixels, or a digital camera with an APS-C sensor, you will hardly see a difference in photos in bright daylight, you will see the real difference and performance of Hasselblad in photos in the dark, and in photos with many small objects. Nice review, I gave thumb up.

…. In all medium format , all photographers knows that , but that’s why is different …. With medium cameras… you more concentrate on what you taking… it’s 100% fine with that , nothing wrong at all , but if you as photographer adjust your skills to use for faster shooting …. Then medium not for you 😊👍❤️

lol contrast af in $6,400 camera, but its slow, so you can take more time to arrange shot 🤣🤣🤣 focal lenght at tests, f or something, nah verge at it finest :D This camera made for rich hipsters similiar to iphone, others will common sense will choose sony alpha one, just even for choice of lenses 🤣🤣🤣 I will not mention you can slow down and take more time on composition on every camera, no need to rush if sony a1 can take up to 30fps 🤣🤣🤣 great review 🤣🤣🤣

A camera that costs $6.4K, can't shoot decent videos, performs slowly, and very difficult to use. What else is there to love? Just because they are Hasselblad who is great at colors and sent their camera to the moon? No, thanks.

As a person who loved his old c body film camera I'm glad to see an energetic young photog who so nails the art. To cherish every single frame as you put it is exact. For me that is what the art is about. Nicely done!

This camera is for people who own a 203FE and want to use their existing lenses with digital back. The camera attachment is a vaguely cool party trick.

The guy on Instagram requesting an iPhone comparison because it's the only camera they know anything about, actually made me laugh.

You were way too kind when it came to the terrible handling ergonomics. They are practically forcing you to buy the handle for $700.

NO GRIP. SLOW FOCUS. NO VIEW FINDER= inaccurate aiming. and TOO EXPENSIVE. Sure it has some advantages...but how practical are those adv. that cant be achieved from its competitors which are much cheaper and HONESTLY...MUCH MORE CAPABLE. btw....No IBIS either. . . . .Its practical BODY ONLY price I would say is about $2200...just because its kind of unique. Still above than mid range camera's price but just enough that would push someone who really wants it to buy it. What do you think?

It's a good senor; but it is an old sensor; the same one that was in the fujifilm GFX 50s from 2017; and the 50R from 2018; and from Hasselblad's own X1c 50C I and II. None of these can shoot video worth a dam; limited to 1080i (30 frames per second); None of these are stabilized sensors; so many shots; especially at night you will miss or have to use a tripod. In the case of Hassleblad at least it can attach to older film backs and thus have an additional use; because otherwise; $6500 is a TALL order for a slow one dimensional camera; Not when for that same price you can get a Sony A1 and get way more lens from both sony and 3rd party; you get 4K120, you get 8K; stabilized lens, you get same 50 megapixels; but you get 30 frames per second and thus you can use this for spots, wildlife..and just about any genre there is. And if you still want to stick to medium format; then it's still a Tall order when FujiFilm has the new GFX 100S; it's 500 bucks cheaper and you get 4K30 video; full HD video; a stabilized lens, 100 megapixel, and a bunch more; oh and it's still shoots 5 frames per second and since it is a stabilized lens; you faster and less of your shots will be lost because this.

Your summary is spot-on! For this of us who take a more deliberate approach to setting up our compositions this camera screams to us! Wish I could afford it though. Maybe I missed it but I think this would be a tremendous landscape camera - especially for this who are already used to shooting off a tripod. I'd love to have this camera, or even the 907C.

I bet it's a lovely slow camera to review, bur you need to love slowly a whole lot when you have to pay $6400 for it. Especially when there is a Fujifilm GFX100s as competition.

Great. So how about portraits. Oh yeah. Only horizontal pictures. I rest my case your honor. I don’t get it. Are all of the reviewers actually only shot in one orientation?! That literally makes the whole concept a hard pass. I‘d get the x1d if I really wanted a digiblad or just go for the gfx50r. Same sensor. Much lower price. Way better ergonomics. But then again... nice Video btw. I enjoyed it. 😇

comparing it to easily the worst Sony mirrorless full frame camera (with an adapted lens and not native Sony GM glass) is really not fair. I would bet that the Sony A7R IV with a nice GM prime or even something like their 28-70 GM 2.8 would outshoot your spendy paperweight any day. Even the A7 III or IV would.

Hello, I am from Hong Kong I have ever used a classic 500CM and love waist level shooting very much…but it was already in the old time🥹 For those camera AF is slow but supreme good image…I still love to use it and I will use MF instead haha! If you have a chance to get a Hasselblad SWC, we will very hope to see it and how it perform👀

Hasselblad is the only brand in the world that does not make fun of its users. They made the best camera in the world in 1957 and you can still use it in 2021 with the digital back. The optics are simply amazing. When will Nikon Canon Pentax (Minolta RIP) invent a digital film to slip into the old cameras?
