Minor Correction: The Bob-omb Carpetless strat was found by a TASer called Snark before the 2013 TAS was made, and it was used in that 2013 TAS. Here's a link to the original upload: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vV9MV13w2U8.html I would've found this in my research but the title was in Japanese so I missed it :| Sorry everyone!

I encourage all English speaking gamers to learn the basics of Japanese. Hiragana and Katakana. Or at least the five vowel sounds! It has helped me immensely in everyday life and especially the gaming world! And they only took me an hour each to memorize using the $7 to 8 dollar app. Dr. Moku! Which was only $2 in 2012 when I got it and had less features. You can learn it however you want. Memorizing it is easy. But that app makes it ridiculously fast! I ended up learning a lot of the language through other sources but the basics of reading can be learned surprisingly fast! The basics are all you'll need as a gamer though since even Katakana alone is used prominently in almost every game and most titles and menu selections and names of items, locations and characters are almost always written in it. What makes it so easy is that the Katakana characters used almost ALWAYS simply spell out English words! And if they aren't they are still spelled out in the way that you say them since they are spelled out in characters for syllables! This has been invaluable to me and like I said. I HIGHLY encourage all serious gamers, streamers, and speedrunners alike to maybe step out of their comfort zones and give learning Kana a genuine chance! You may be surprised at just how much it helps! A big bonus to it, is that because it writes out everything in syllables and not letters, you will instantly and forever and always know precisely how to say the names of all the Japanese Video Game Characters you may have never known how for sure how to say before! Like Samus Aran which nearly everyone in the west says wrong. And other popular names that most people here in the west get wrong as well.. Like Planet Zebes, Deku, Saria, Mido, Pokémon, Ivalice, Yuffie, Aeris, Zidane, Tidus, Sekiro, Sakurai, ect. and learning interesting things like the Rockman characters Protoman and Treble and Bass are actually supposed to be called Blues, Forte and Gospel! I know the internet by now and most people will tend to have a negative comment toward me trying to encouraging people to learn Kana. But I will just ignore it because I really do believe that as gamers and especially streamers and speedrunners should hold up a standard of accuracy for ourselves and the rest of the gaming world that follows them! I always like to say "How would you feel if everyone said YOUR name wrong? Even after telling them how to say it?". In English we can in small ways, change how we pronounce words and m names of things a little differently and we understand its the same thing. But in Japanese and names created originally in Japanese There is always only ONE singular way to say each syllable. Since all instances of what would be translated as the letter A is ALWAYS "Aahh" like "Bah" "Humbug" or the "o" in "BOX" it means that names like Samus. You'll see that it actually is impossible for the name Samus Aran it to be Sam us Uh Ran. It's was originally written to be only possible for it to be correctly spoken as like SAHH MUS AHHRaHhN *サムス**アラン**. The usual backlash I get is that people dont care enough about these things to change how theyve said something their entire life. And to that I say. Are you really happy with being like that? Or would you rather be proud of yourself for going the extra mile to be respectful and learn to say someone's name the right way? Just as you would wish that others do for your name! If we all took the time to learn basic Kana or at the very least, how to say each vowel because u like English having like six different ways for each vowel, Japanese has ONLY ONE! And if we all knew these five vowel sounds, as gamers we could communicate, understand, and write about, many things from Japan more accurately! And like the original comment here, possibly sooner be able to find information on missing parts of speedrunning history! Thanks for reading!

Hello, I'm Timestoppa, I was one of the authors of the current Big House in the Sky TAS WR, and I designed the PU route. Watch for Rolling Rocks 0.5x does explain Parallel Universes fairly well, but it focuses only on PU movement that's done in the A Button Challenge, and leaves out a technique that is central to the PU route used in the Big House TAS: Overflow Jump, or OJ for short. (The following writeup assumes you've watched Watch for Rolling Rocks 0.5x) When Mario jumps, the vertical speed (VS) he gets initially is proportional to his horizontal speed. Specifically, it's calculated as 42 + speed / 4. So if he has sufficiently high negative speed, he'll actually jump downwards. For example, if he has -6000 speed, the VS he'll have in that first frame is -1458, and so he can move down 1458 units in that frame, or 364.5 units per quarter step (henceforth abbreviated as QF (F for frame)). The PU grid is three-dimensional, and so if Mario jumps with enough speed, he'll actually go to a PU below the main map. When this happens, he snaps back up the horizontal PU grid and goes down to the highest floor below him. Thus, OJs allow Mario to instantly change his height by an arbitrary amount (as long as there is ground at that height). And so the Big House TAS works by performing an OJ to a PU version of the House roof, and then returning to the main map below the star. Explanatory diagram for OJ cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/267091686423789568/345149095079444481/OJDiagram.png More detailed writeup of PUs I did a while ago docs.google.com/document/d/1ENM5_PdF-kSpiGK5wDVlaxo4uf4F2N8GUkHrCQnaMGg/edit?usp=sharing

Piggy-backing your top comment to add: If anyone is at all curious about SM64 mechanics or TASing, look up "Walls, Floors, and Ceilings", a 3-part (for now) series by Pannen on the way level geometry in SM64 works. It'll be 2 hours of pure SM64 knowledge that will help you understand a lot of the crazier interactions in TASes and speedruns. What's even crazier is that there is still unexplored territory! TASers still don't completely understand how glitchy wall kicks work, for example.

@jongyon7192p
@jongyon7192p 5 лет назад
@@GammaFn. I'd argue that that changed recently and we know how glitchy wall kicks (GWKs) work. But... atm, it's only Bad Boot and a few others who really know how GWKs work, and the rest of us just gave up trying to understand it, or understand a very cursory version of it. Basically, there is quarter frame GWKs (QFGWK) and bonk GWKs. qfgwks are where one of mario's quarter steps is inside one wall and another quarter step is in another wall. I forgot completely which wall mario reflects angle off of, but it might be a factor of the wall index instead of which order mario hit these walls at. The qfgwk doesn't ALWAYS need to be a 1st frame wall kick iirc, but I'm not sure how it works if it happens through multiple frames. Doesn't matter, for speed TASes, you always want to firstie your wallkicks to conserve speed. Bonk GWKs are almost never used, except in the Top of the Tower TAS WR. You cannot firstie a bonk GWK. You do it by bonking off a wall or ceiling, hitting another wall, before wallkicking. That's literally all I know about this. I tried to figure it out and Mario's angle seems to change 4 times every frame? Yeah, I didn't have a good time with that until Bad Boot came along and figured it all out for us. I think Plush also understand GWKs now? For the sake of TASing: (1) Try to wallkick off of a wall corner. (2) Spam rerecords until Mario gets it.

@@James.Stark.Ben.Edition the problem with the look at the ground was that "it made the game boring to play and watch" in this case, yes it would be huge but if someone got a reliable way to do it during a run it would just mean the strategy is viable and people would start incorporating it, basically the game would evolve. Now maybe the pu thing could kill it, but this would just get everyone back to practicing the new set up, i think this is more like the bomb clip or cannonless, seems imposible and unfair now but in reality will only get rid of one boring slow part of the run.
@James.Stark.Ben.Edition
@James.Stark.Ben.Edition 5 лет назад
@@olgierdvoneverec4135 Yeah, but like the video said, these inputs are really really hard to be done by a human. A TAS was needed to do this in the first place. Sure, a better technique, doable by humans, was found but it's still ridiculously hard to do. It would be insanely frustrating to do the set up every time just for a possible shot at the WR, even with save states. And even then the chances of getting it are very low because there are so many places you can fuck up the tricks. While, yeah, maybe it would get a lot of people practicing, the set up is too insane for it to really catch on and I think it would discourage a lot of runners from trying to get WR or anywhere close to it.

The handsfree teleport mechanic goes a bit further than what EZScape talked about, so I'll do the honors of touching on it some more: When Mario grabs an object, what you see in his hands is NOT the object he grabbed. Instead, the game puts a graphic of the object in his hands while the object itself is somewhere else. Some objects stay where they were when grabbed, and some continuously update their position as Mario moves (usually to be at his position, which is a point located at the bottom of his model and between his feet). Bob-ombs are one of two grabbable objects (the other, strangely, being MIPS the rabbit) where they continually update to be 100 units in front of Mario and 60 units above him. This is because the fuse smoke that you see when Mario is holding a Bob-omb actually comes out of the real Bob-omb, and not the held graphic. Now, most grabbable objects become invisible and intangible when Mario grabs them. Bob-ombs are the sole exception, as they remain tangible upon being grabbed. This allows their hitbox to interact with other objects (such as goombas or other bob-ombs) and is responsible for the insane push Mario gets from holding a bloated bob-omb, since its hitbox will constantly be overlapping with Mario's hitbox and trying to push him out (note that Mario's speed itself isn't actually affected, he's just being pushed on every frame). There are three conditions that are normally met when Mario is holding an object. 1) His action type corresponds to holding an object. 2) There must be an object slot that is referenced as being held by Mario, and the object itself must think it's being held. 3) The HOLP (Held Object's Last Position, the point in 3D space that keeps track of where an object is being held) is constantly updating. Holding an object handsfree satisfies conditions 2 and 3, but not 1. Since Mario is not in the "holdy action" state, he can take teleports if he is above one on the first frame he stands (Mario can't walk or stand while holding an object handsfree, otherwise he will drop it), which isn't usually possible. This leads to an interesting scenario. Typically, the real bob-omb is brought back into the real world by dropping or throwing the held graphic, and it uses the HOLP's coordinates (with some adjustments based on whether Mario threw or dropped the object) to determine where to appear at. Handsfree teleporting discards the held graphic WITHOUT bringing the real object back, essentially leaving the actual object permanently stuck in limbo. Well, in most cases. Remember earlier when I said that bob-ombs stay tangible when Mario grabs them? And how they usually update to be in front of him? That remains true after a handsfree teleport. So, Mario is able to move around freely while an invisible bob-omb continuously hovers in front of him, with its bloated hitbox continuing to push him around. Bob-ombs have 4 bloated states (since it grows over a 4 frame period before exploding), and for carpetless to work, it must be at its largest possible size (requiring a 4th frame grab). While not related to this trick, this also allows bob-ombs to be regrabbed after a handsfree teleport (which isn't possible with any other object) and is why Mario loses the push if he kicks the bob-omb's hitbox away (which you see at the end of Xiah's run). Also, the last two wallkicks used for carpetless are not actual glitchy wallkicks. They are regular wallkicks, but they look weird because of the angle Mario's moving at as well as the bob-omb's push. This comment will probably be edited if I ever need to make corrections, but I hope this is a good explanation on some of the deeper mechanics involved with this trick.

Dirty Dard gatekeeping is where you say that people aren’t *allowed* do something for one reason or another. You’re not *allowed* to like this band, you haven’t known them for long enough. You’re not *allowed* to be a real gamer, you’re a girl/trans/gay(yes, it happens). You’re not *allowed* to go see live action Lion King, you didn’t grow up with the original. EZScape is making an assertion that no one will ever use this trick in speedrunning, not because he says so, but because it’s far too difficult for a human to do. He even challenges the community to prove him wrong, had you bothered to read the description.

I know that this trick is too inconsistent for a runner to pick it up with the intention of using it in a run. If a runner was able to do the trick because they practiced it for whatever reason, being so close to the end of the run is kind of a blessing in disguise though. If you are not able to PB without a gold split, you might as well try it because you have not much to lose. I don't think we will ever see it (with this setup at least), but if it was in the middle of the run, it would be even more unlikely.

I would also have to think that would change the 100 coin star route for RR because at least in the 120 star runs that I’ve watched, that star is done in conjunction with the carpet ride. It could be an old route though, I don’t know, as I’ve really only watched a couple of runners of SM64. I’m just basing this on what I’ve seen.

Tricks like this will, eventually, have every trick used, but only when there's nothing else left to use to improve times. If someone has a 70/120 star run with literally no space for improvement except carpetless, then they'll go for it. Otherwise it's like someone with a 5minute SMB1 run and they're trying for the 1-2 pipe clip. There's way more room for improvement before that trick.
