I visit Carugati in Geneva, Switzerland to test drive a BMW Z8. In recent years, the value of these 20 year old BMWs have gone through the roof so I tried to find out why.
When it first appeared in 1997 at the Tokyo Motor Show, the BMW Z8 was clearly inspired by the legendary BMW 507. Heart-melting design from Chief Designer Chris Bangle and his team, combined nostalgia with state-of-the-art technology and the aluminium spaceframe penned by Henrik Fisker.
The BMW Z8 featured a high performance, 5 litre V8 sports engine, delivering 400 hp and 542 Nm (400 lb-ft) of torque, ensuring the Z8 makes an entrance. 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under five seconds and a restricted top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) were the vital statistics, and then there is the soundtrack only an eight-cylinder ensemble can produce. In a roadster with the roof down, it is perfect.

This breaks my heart. I had a triple black one (exterior, interior, seats). That sound takes me back. I should just be pleased with the memories, but I'm not that mature. I was in my early 30s when I got mine. I bought it from a pawn broker in North Georgia in 2003(ish) for $76K (if you can imagine) and sold it on after about three years and 10K miles for the same amount +$1...congratulating myself on being a shrewd negotiator. I needed the money so I had no choice really. It is better to have loved and lost they say, but is it really? Is it? I'm not so sure.

John O'Hare ......at least you had it for a while. Someone once said that we don’t really own these things, we’re just taking care of it until we pass them on to the next caretaker, so that future generations might enjoy them too.

I worked on the Bond film with the Z8. I remember the secrecies around it all, and this was way before the internet kicked off, so seeing the cars all lined up, (hero, stunt, and another) plus being driven around Pinewood studios in the Z8, in the late 90’s which was a production prototype of sorts was great fun! Seeing one cut in half on set was crazy to watch.

The Z8 and the SLS are the Pinnacle of „modern“ day sports cars when it comes to styling imo. Both with retro-touches and because of that: they are clearly timeless.

That BMW is a timeless classic. That car will never not be great. I am surprised they don't cost more. I can't imagine they don't continue to appreciate in value. Just gorgeous. When those with money get bored with the 1000 hp hyper cars I think the pushback will be rediscovering cars like this BMW. Good HP, dynamic and an incredible design. Hopefully we are heading back to these times because horsepower will not keep selling cars when every company has it. I am waiting for design's comeback.

I drove one of these for SCD last year from DD Classics. I smiled the whole time, as did anyone I drove past. Such a fantastic car with such character. It would suit you perfectly Sam!

The reason you have never seen one is because BMW only made something like 400 cars in total. That is pretty rare for any car model I should think. I had a 2000 Mazda Miata in dark blue with saddle interior that looked very much like the Z8. Once I saw a Z8 parked on Worth Ave. in Palm Beach in the same color combination. It was one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen and it made my Miata seem rather inadequate to say the least.

@@denishanjoul Thank you for the correction. I think that I based my numbers on what car dealers said in their ads that I read for the car. Maybe they were referring only to the Alpina version which included only about 400 examples shipped to the USA.

Yes, yes, yes. I've always loved the Z8, the looks alone are enough for me. I also remember it being cut in half when I saw the bond film in the cinema which was a horrible thing to see.

One detail I never understood are the lights in the grille! Graf Görtz (the genius behind the 507, 503, 504 etc.) also thought it weird, but was otherwise very complimentary about the Z8! Some people claim that you can buy a grille without lights as an add on modification. Normally I do not agree with tinkering with the bodywork on cars, but here I do see the point clearly! What do we make of the idea to put a number plate right across the i4 grille by the way?

lol I have a Z3 Roadster from 99. It‘s by no means a modern car but it‘s only 2 years older, than the Z8 😱 The Z8 is absolutely beautiful and one of my dream cars.

I used to work at a BMW dealership and there was one customer who bought his Z8 Brand New back in the day and just loved his ride (170k kilometers). The crazy thing was that just in the last 12 year's he had spend over 100k € in repairs and maintenance including one rear light that cost ~7k because they are being built by hand in a workshop in Munich. But I just love a Z8!

Saw a silver one of these in the South of France (I think Antibes) and it is stunning. The rear on this car is so far beyond its years, and it seems to age better and better each year.

Great video! That Z8 in blue is just perfect looking in my mind. If I was a buyer in the 90's looking at one I would have probably bought the alpina because I would want to cruise a coastline in it with no care in the world but nowadays I would want to take the blue one you had and convert it into a pdk for the same purpose. $80k was a bargain for that if you ask me. It is a timeless look for sure from the outside

Absolutely gorgeous. One of my all time favourite cars. I personally think it is worth that amount purely due to the fact that it isn't like BMW to make such a car in the modern world, nor then or now. You would never see an interior as flamboyant in most cars, let alone a German one! The Alpina follows the same mantra as all Alpinas..they choose lazier, torturer engines with auto boxes as it is seen as the more comfy, classy option to the M equivalent. I really wish bmw would build cars similar to these once in a while. THE BMW homage concept cars from 2015 should have made it into production for a limited run for sure! I don't feel like bmw are currently manufacturing future classics sadly 🤷🏿‍♂️

Crazy thing is you could buy a Z8 15 years ago for around £25k because nobody in the UK knew what to make of them. Nuts if you think about it, guess they were a bit too numb for UK roads and retro styling wasn't quite as desirable.

Sam just needs an e60 545i manual lever fitting mate and the throw is spot on. The notchness is just a thing of it. Worse when cold but the e46 M3 and e39 M5 both suffered from it

Aa truly desirable car, I get it but don’t necessarily want one, however, there are 2 cars I know that despite being flawed and not particularly special in terms of ability, they define cool and you will never look like an obnoxious git driving them, this is one and the Alfa 8c is the other!

The Z-8 is a unicorn, it’s one of those cars... nobody could’ve known what it would become. It was featured in a bond movie so you know it was cool. Back then BMW made a habit of making unicorns. Everyone remembers the clown shoe. The 90s and 2000s M cars and Z cars were so good. I think Merc is leading zee germans these days. I’d still have a 2010 - 2014 Audi RS 5 though

I think they were about 80k when they came out at the time. Weren't made in huge numbers, and also weren't immensely popular? Someone inform me... The Alpina is the highest price these days. Although 200k would be a bit over what I would (imaginably) pay for one, but they are about the coolest looking roadster ever made!

At least in Germany it was new around 250000 Mark which would be 125000€ :)

@@domiwer Indeed! From a quick google they were £86,650 (1999) which, back when the pound had value, was probably around 125k eur. Interesting. A pricey car from the start. My dream in those days was the Z3, because I was a very realistic 9 year old :)

This is a well put together car that you buy just for the looks alone. But I agree 200k is a lot of money for the looks even if it looks stunning. The E39 M5 with those mechanics, is a much better car to drive than the Z8 even if the Z8 is the sports car. The Z8 at the 90-120k would make a cool Friday afternoon “lets drive into the weekend” car 😎

I have always liked them being s BMW guy, I visited a customer in Binfield once and he had a black one on his drive. Probably my rarest spot ( I don't count anything in a dealership or car show as a spot) it was the McLaren F1 but I have spotted two in the wild now.. about ten years apart just on the same road I was driving down.

I think an E89 35is with the 1m engine is a much nicer reference to the 507 and drives better and Is just as fast as this … way more drivable in a daily context. It’s only down side is it’s a turbo but then it has 500nm torque for road use. So take your pick.
