Having watched a lot of your vids on historic aircraft Chris, I loved this one, where you are not in your comfort zone, but rather like a schoolboy on an exciting trip to The Airshow. Enthusiasm absolutely undampened. Great work!
Agreed that British weather is often crap, but the summer of 1940 was actually a good one. There are many reasons the Luftwaffe lost the Battle of Britain but the weather wasn't one of them.
there was a missidentification at 11:39 Thats a Mk 1005C or MVC digestive. The C designates it as a chocolate varient of the standard digestive. Easy to mistake with the Hobnob but due to more advanced technology the MVC has a much smoother surface so it has less drag while dipping it into the tea.

I love that at an airshow, every airplane fan ends up doing the same thing. Walking one way, hear an airplane, then turn and run towards the airplane. Great video! Hope to thank you in person during your US tour.
@@brianreddeman951 when I was at Oshkosh 2019. You could walk up and touch the A10, F18, F16 and Apache. But the F35 had a yellow rope that said cross this rope and get shot in more polite terms. 2 MPs in full kit standing there at all times. They were nice to chat to tho as they had learned quite about the planes standing there. Maybe thats changed as more countries have recieved them and it's less new. I think Oshkosh was the first public groud display.
With the sad and recent passing of Eddy, it is good to know that there are still other incompetent camera minions to take up the mantle... if not for the Lord of the Salt Mines. Also, seeing Chris in his natural environment like this is kind of adorable.

You’d never believe it but up until last week, England had something like 9 or 10 weeks of continuous sunny / hot days. Panic over, we’re all back to normal now! 😂

I feel the same way every time I enter the airshow entrance, never gets old. Also great to see the P51 "Frances Dell" there. Greetings to Georg Raab and his crew. I made several videos with them and his P-51D. I think he wants to sell it and get something different, maybe a spitfire or corsair or something. Either way, great video format, very entertaining!
This rain destroyed my camera. It turns out DSLRs, no matter how high end, are not truly weatherproofed. Still, good show. Edit: I saw you there but didn't recognise you, inadvertently photographing you by the Me-262
As an Englishman we are familiar with bad weather.. but the weather this July has been appalling even by our standards! What’s slightly irritating is to hear about Europe currently basking with a heat wave 😭 Please sun, come back 🙏🏽☀️
You made me laugh while feeling nostalgic. The running around, and shouting "Afterburner!" reminded me of the times I attended airshows in the USA back in my college days in the 1980s. My friends and I were just like you, excited about seeing the aircraft, and seeing them fly. It did seem that everytime you said the rain was stopping, it just got worse...
My friend flies that P-51 (and the T-6 on the opposite side of the Breitling chalet)! Great to meet you at the show Chris, really enjoying your RIAT videos!
Reminds me of my time at.Korat, RTAFB during monsoon season. We fueled, loaded and lauched F-4 pretty much regardless of weather, especially ground support missions. Your weather.there would have just cooled things off a bit which was nice till the sun came.back out turning the base hot AND humid. 😊 Bad weather.screws up airshows but rarely combat ops. Still looks like a good time!
Went to the Abbotsford (BC, Canada) Airshow 2 or 3 times -- first weekend in August -- rained out every time. People got very curious about the C-130 -- the inside of it. B-52 was also popular (under the wings). Improvised raincoats out of trash bags. Good times!
I remember the year they cancelled the whole show the week before due to heavy rain and someone complained why. The organisers posted a video of someone kayaking up the main runway.
I’ve been there from Wednesday and leave tomorrow evening. This is obviously Friday, an almost complete washout. Wednesday and Thursday were warm, Sat was sunshine ,wind and showers, Today was sunshine and heavy showers and Monday will be sunny. Thats how RIAT goes. Today we saw an Me262 followed by a B52, a Harrier in formation with an F-35B, dozens of jet fighters and even a couple of German Tornadoes doing a refuelling demo behind an A400m. I’m surprised you don’t know the difference between an F-35B and a C 🤷🏻♂️

Hopefully, Oshkosh will be better. In my years of going, there is usually 1 rainy bad day, and every few years there is a good storm, but the rest of the event is great.
Oh shit I love that specific F-16. It was painted like the Danish flag (Dannebrog) to celebrate (King)Valdemar's day in 2019. The Danish flag is said to have fallen from the skies during a crusade in present-day Estonia 800 years ago, emboldering the Danes to victory. It's a cool myth and a cooler paint job c:

I remember when the rain started on Sunday, I was trapped in one of the shops when they put their tarp up to keep the insides dry. Everyone that left always came back drenched.

The best airshow I have ever enjoyed was when a Spanish fighter came back from Bosnia and was so glad to be back that he gave a show over the beach of L'Estartit. Must have been his first piece of homeland after his flight over the Mediterranean. Can't remember the type of fighter.
I was there on day 2 and the weather was better then day 1 however there was still some cancellations. Unfortunately the ME262 flight was cancelled as the wind was out of limits for the aircraft. Also there was some showers but generally an improvement on day 1 (from what I hear) 😅
I well remember shooting for Bournemouth air fest with a female presenter. We were interviewing a Dutch F16 pilot, she commented on the fact that his plane was painted in vivid colours, wouldn't it it make it easy for the enemy to spot you.?. He was very kind 😂..
Nothing like a F-16 perfuming, I remember Snow Skiing on Mt Rueapehu, an active Volcano in New Zealand's North Island and on the ski field looking down at a bunch of Sky Hawks, F-111's and F-16's plus other aircraft having a go at each other or what ever they were doing because I had no Idea; it was amazing! Some years later a colleague of mine was skiing on the same mountain when it blew up, there was a photo of him skiing very fast, he was from South Afrika, I think he could have broken some South Afrikan skiing records that day!
Glad to see the Lightning’s of Marham and Lakenheath showed up. F-35C is not STOVL, but has larger folding wings and larger vertical and horizontal stabilizers.
1:41 P-51 "Frances Dell", is stationed at "Siegerlandflughafen" in Germany, close where I live. My boys (2 and 5 years old) and myself often drive to there to see it fly.
RIAT is always one of two thiings, Blisteringly hot or Torential rain i dont think there is an in between. The miistake this year is that there is cricket and tennis going on at the same time, so the rain gods are out in force!
Great video, I always enjoy learning here. I was surprised to see we moved the camera off the helicopter just as it's starting it's wing over, just to go back to it when it was done.
4:01 I remember the conversation a couple of years ago, 3 years ago? On trying to get Germany to decide what aircraft to purchase. They absolutely did not want the f-35... Though I will admit, that the super hornet is a good aircraft, (in fact one of my favorites), I never understood why they even considered that over the f-35. Amazing what a little friskiness from a neighboring country can do to change your mind about military equipment)
Luftwaffe has not forgotten the F104 they were conned into buying, which killed dozens of their best pilots. We are still unsure if the F35 is another lemon.
The F/A-18 would have been much (!) cheaper. And Germany would still buy the F/A-18 but they lost their certification to carry the US nuclear bombs. And that´s what it´s all about. Germany has to participate in the so called "nuclear participation". And because Germany has no own nuclear bombs, they have to use the US ones. Germany could have the Eurofighter Typhoon get the mentioned certification but Germany would have been forced to open up all classified files of the Typhoon to the US to get it. And even beeing a NATO partner, they do not want to do that. So they had to buy an already certified jet and that´s the F-35. (I think the F-15 E would have been an option, but as european NATO partners are all going for the F-35 nowadays, Germany didn´t want to have an own solution).
Years ago, I was living very close to Buckley A. N. G. B. One night I was out on my patio, and I observed an F-16 from the base take off, then go straight up with afterburners on. I watched it until I couldn't make it out anymore in the night sky. So cool.
July seems increasingly hit and miss re the weather in the UK. I try to go on holiday in June when it is more consistently sunnier or at least dry. Such a frustration with many of my hobbies - airshows, going out on a motorcycle or photographing heritage trains. Mind you, probably better that it rains than the 40C + temps southern Europe is having. I'm not at the show this year but looks like Saturday was better and more sunny weather forecast for Sunday too :-)
What you really want is a nice cold sunny winters day for this stuff. The planes fly better, and you're not sweltering (like at Avalon here in Aus). Oh well, still fun to see planes, even in the wet.
Hello sorry to hear you had a soggy airshow I went to fairford in 2005 and again the following year totally different since COVID. But still great shows back then I lived about 40 mins from fairford so didn't have far to go.
Similar conditions as 1994. The many trade stalls became packed with people taking shelter. Got great photos of aircraft on the static line reflected in the floods on the ramp though...

The trick, apparently, is to go to events with me! I went to RIAT 2022 which was 2 days before we hit our 40C record, then I went to Goodwood FoS this year - it rained on Friday, they cancelled Saturday due to weather, then I turned up and Sunday was hot and sunny all day 😁 Haven't decided what my next event is, but if it stops raining in the UK, it's probably then...
