Meet Donald Klip, a famous entrepreneur and a dual citizen of America and Hong Kong. As a child, he moved from Singapore to the US, where he lived until he was 25. Then, he relocated to Hong Kong, and now he has been residing in Singapore for 9 years. Donald told me the major differences between Hong Kong and Singapore, non-obvious facts that make Singapore an exciting place to live, and the simplest way to buy real estate abroad. Enjoy!

Taiwan is nice for vacation, very green, lots of beautiful sites outside the city. But when you are actually living there, you’ll soon find out that the lifestyle is more suitable for senior citizens or orderly individuals. Everything is involved with eatery, night market, etc. If you actually like to party, drinking, social, dancing, meetup, hookup, SG is far better and more liberal

It really depends on what you want. If u want the chaos, hustle and buzz. Hong Kong is for you. If u want calm, chill vibes, pleasant streets and surroundings, people giving you way on the streets, then Singapore is for you. Also, according to the Democracy Index, Singapore is a flawed democracy while Hong Kong is a hybrid regime. For me, I’d choose Singapore too.

@aravchandra3572
@aravchandra3572 12 дней назад
SIngapore is not a flawed democracy Hong Kong is not a hybrid regime either Singapore is a democratic country and is one of the most democratic countries the government or the people's action party has to make sure it gives it's best for the people otherwise it could be ruled out I think Singapores democracy is better than the US's and west the western press is biased they have their own thoughts and even if they're not true they will publish things if somebody publishes something about Singapore and it's not true Singapore will go back to them and say you correct this you correct it we don't want false information Singapore doesn't allow lies to be sent around the community politicians can't lie in Singapore they can lie in other countries and they do, but not Singapore and politicians in Singapore have a better standard I think the US and the west can learn things from Singapore by respecting all religions and races no racism perfect harmony, no tolerance for corruption big punishments for corruption America is one of the least corrupt countries and Singapore is one of the least corrupt countries and is less corrupt than the US I think there should be heavier punishments for corruption. A good government a government that thinks long term doesn't think about it being re elected and its own personal agenda for the politician, looking after the interests of the people and fining people for littering, spitting on the road another thing In the US there is gun violence the US has the most gun violence, I think there should be strict gun control, and strict background checks the problem is the NRA and republicans don't want to do anything about it Singapore is very safe and is one of the safest countries and more peaceful than the US, and another thing is that there is corruption of lobbying in the US, and west in Singapore lobbying isn't allowed and illegal there is also a better quality of life in Singapore than the US, and yes a higher life expectancy in Singapore than the US there is also no natural disaster in Singapore and Singapore has one of the highest savings rate in the world and higher GDP per Capita than the US and income tax rates in Singapore are quite low between 2 percent to 24 percent or 22 percent Singapore is also an easier place of doing business than the US people are more friendly in Singapore I think Singapore is really nice Singapores healthcare system is better than the healthcare system in the US and the best Singapore isn't perfect though no country is, but in my opinion SG is better than the US I think the government of Singapore is better than the government of the US Singapore airlines is the best airline Singapore's passport is stronger than the US's Singapores story is phenomenal in such a short 30 40 or 50 years it became a developed country and rich country Singapores infrastructure is also better than the US's. The US's foreign policy is problematic bad I think Singapore is the best country this is my point of view though in Singapore they're also trying to solve the problems I don't think democracy is the answer I think it depends on the quality of the leader, things being based on merit. No corruption or low corruption and a good administration and if a country has a good democracy or benevolent good dictatorship, benevolent dictator than I think that is good otherwise than that is bad there can even be problems in a democracy like what if a lot of people are uneducated illiterate that is bad and many are unemployed there is a lot of corruption a bad administration things aren't based on merit that is bad what if there is casteism and communalism that is bad and if the quality of the leader isn't good that is bad what is there is also gender discrimination and regionalism even that is bad. Lee Kuan Yew is my favorite politician. My current favorite politician is Narendra Modi Modi ji. You can use the public transportation like the Buses and metro and it's one of the best, one of the cheapest, and one of the safest in Singapore. In the US you have to drive or go on a vehicle you mostly rely on vehicles. Singapores Changi airport is the best airport. I am not into democracy, I think and believe there are alternatives and I think democracy slows down the progress I don't think democracy is the best form of government today we also agree that diversity of thought and diversity of governance is important, but for some reason, when it comes to democracy the west, thinks that it's one size fits all, this is why we need a better form of democracy for more people around the world. Senegal has democracy Kenya has democracy, the Southside of Chicago in America has democracy in fact it is the most democratic government in the world yet there is no safety in the Southside of Chicago there is no safety at Compton there is no safety in the slums of Kenya so the idea that democracy provides you with safety and opportunity and only democracy does that is wrong. The idea of democracy that one vote = 1 say is flawed because even if everybody deserves a voice not every voice is equal in value. I don't think a uneducated person on the street should have a say of the Nuclear policy of the United States or the UK. let's make that the whole government let's make the smartest 2,000 people in a country choose the direction of the country democracy only works when the population is sufficiently educated and that is not the case in 90% of the world. In a functioning government where there's smart people that are able to make decisions they would say no to Adolf Hitler they would say no to Donald J Trump because the average person could tell there's something wrong with this leader we should not allow them to manipulate the rest of the population this is why democracy is dangerous every leader comes and promises you a business seat in their plane, but they don't know how to fly a plane. There is a better form of governance that we can explore together and it's not dictatorship we don't like dictatorship I also don't like dictatorship, but not the whole world wants to live by the ideals of one country. Nas daily uploaded a video a year ago titled is Democracy good or bad and debated with Alex I agree with Nuseir I don't think Democracy is the answer. Yes Singapore is not an American style democracy thankfully which is obsessed with labels/form/ ideology rather than substance. Hence this endless agonising over whether a country is democratic or socialist/ communist. Unlike America, Singapores leaders from the outset were pragmatic and focused on economic development in order to improve the living standards of their people. And they have been spectacularly successful in delivering the fruits of good governance of their people. Singapore has a parliamentary system based on the Westminster model, have one man one vote free elections every 5 years. Singapore elections are legitimately free and fair because even key ministers have been unseated at the ballot box in the past. Typically 2/3 of the population vote for the ruling PAP People's Action party because of their excellent track record of good governance, not because they don't have a free choice. Almost any Singaporean can run for parliament with an election deposit of about SGD13,000. In the US, you cannot run for political office unless you have lots of money. In 2020, USD 8 billion was spent on congressional races. American democracy has degenerated to a plutocracy where it's rule by the elite 1% for the elite 1%. Ordinary Americans have seen declining living standards in the past 30 years, and it must be cold comfort to the more than 653,000 homeless Americans that they live in the world's most powerful democracy. Big business interests are allowed. to lobby and donate money to politicians, making office holders beholden to them In Singapore, this is corruption and illegal. So it's not surprising that they often serve the interests of their rich donors rather than their constituents. Abraham Lincoln said democracy is a rule of the people , for the people and by the people. On that test, it would seem that Singapore is more democratic than the U.S. Singapore is way more democratic than many countries including the U.S. with the 2 party system and lobbying framework. Singapore is a successful democracy.

@@aravchandra3572 I agree with 99% of what you stated here about Singapore. Just 2 issues: 1. please use fullstops. Your kb has no fullstop ? 2. I don't like Modi. He is a divisive figure and supports the extremists in BJP factions. His gang came to attack my parents home town in Surat during the Gujarat riots. They even threatened to "rape the women and girls". Modi approved the attack. But luckily our male relatives were armed and stood their ground to save the town from th extremist marauders from BJP. In fact my cousins personally knew the background of some of the marauders. Local guys were BJP supporters and hate Christians, Muslims and other religions. So nope, Modi is not a good man to a lot of people in India and Indians of other religions overseas too.

No Hiking in Singapore? Nah, lots of good options. I was there in March and between the rail trails , the southern ridges, and the Botanical Gardens had a hoot of a time. Sure, all of these were best tackled early in the morning, but that only means the National Gallery is even more fun in the afternoon. Oh, and a Singapore hack. Get yourself an Insider Membership for the Gallery. Saves a small fortune and gets the nod from all the Gallery staff.

Singapore is in a very unique position where despite being a democracy, one party has been dominant since her founding. Hence Singapore has the political stability of an authoritarian state, while retaining the safety net of democracy. This empowers the Singapore government to think in terms of generations when they plan for the future, as opposed to election cycles. However, Singapore remains a democracy, so the government still needs to answer to the people.

Just like how an individual - whether among the same race, or between different ethnic groups - differs one from another, it’s what makes the human race unique and interesting. One needs to have an open mindset and learn to embrace diversity, and respect our differences. That’ll bring peace and harmony instead of strife. Maybe I’m just being naive… but hopeful.

If you have money (esp old money) HK is definitely a better place to live..the beautiful seaside and peak mansions, picturesque windy roads, the huge yachting and sailing scenes, the extremely exclusive and expensive private clubs, the choice of amazing restaurants, the large supercar circles, numerous idyllic islands and beaches, proximity to Macau and mainland China, the bustling New York style city life and party scenes, all the fashion parities (esp when HK has 4 seasons) hk has it all and there are lots that Singapore can’t compare with

There are at least 21 countries who are smaller in Singapore. It is not really a super small country, considering it's big floor areas, wall areas, tunnel areas, park connector areas, maritime areas, etc. Singapore port is the 2nd busiest seaport in the whole world. Singapore is an archipelago of at least 64 islands. Their number of parks and trees are more than the other bigger countries. Singapore is also growing continously in size. It has ongoing land reclamations and future land reclamations. Time will come, it will overtake in size some of those countries bigger than her right now.

Rentals are not that much different anymore I have to say, and property in HK is at an all-time low this decade and maybe century, and the stamp duty for foreigners to buy freehold property in SG is too high. I agree with this, in general Singapore is better due to its economic and political stability, however HK is still a great place to be (at least if you are single) or there for a number of years.

I can't believe anyone is still having this conversation. I guess it's different for someone with that much money, but there is no shortage of Chinese from both HK and the mainland trying to get their money out of China. Australia is just one market for Chinese investors, even as our government finally looks like clamping down on unoccupied dwellings. Whatever ebbs and flows might happen here, money talks in Canada, the UK etc - Chinese buyers will simply move on. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YLfqH1WsS5U.html I haven't been back to Thailand for several years, but I recall Chinese buyers being welcomed with open arms by the real estate industry there. Sure, Singapore is safer but I never had personal safety problems in Bangkok or anywhere else in country. I can't speak for billionaires, but anyone living in Singapore can fly to Thailand in 2 hours if all they are missing is 'excitement' - the world is literally your oyster from Changi. It's a no-brainer for mine.

The British having lost Singapore in the sixties had an axe to grind and HK was the tool. [With Singapore's Independence in August 1965, Singapore was practically thrown into the wilderness. Nobody ever asked the very obvious question, "Why did the Brits not offered any kind of military or other assistance for the new country?". To add insult to injury, they took back all the military aircraft, equipment, ammunition, log stock and barrel. Don't forget, Singapore was British HQ Far East Air, Sea and Land Forces. All that remained were immovable buildings. This is precisely what is happening to HK today.] Most of British trade was centred in Singapore, hence all logistics, finance, shipping goes through Singapore. The Brits built HK to rival Singapore and everything shifted to HK. For more than 30 years, the British leadership (including HK governing class) has little or no contact with Singapore. They made sure Singapore is always below HK in global rankings with input from majority British/European Institutions having a biased attitude. This gives the HK people a sense of superiority they did not really earn themselves. (Now they are starting to insert NZ into the mix). It was the fiat USD that powers HK, hence the fall of USD will bring down HK. What the British cannot do is, bring up the value of the HKD. The most important fact is CPC will never allow HK to surpass Beijing or Shanghai or let the people used HK as a template to change the political landscape of the 2 cities.

@bell-xk5dd
@bell-xk5dd Месяц назад
So absolutely true….what they can’t take with them back to Britain were those immovable and were eventually “sold” to Singapore, like the Alexandra hospital. The hospital was built mainly for the British military and their own kind. No locals were ever entertained there. When the Japanese army came, the Japanese used the hospital for themselves and when they left, everything in there was ruined. When the British finally left Singapore in 1970, they sold it to the Singapore govt for $1. In the early 20s to 50s, the British would ship Indian prisoners from India to Singapore mainly for construction works, so most British buildings and churches here were built by Indian prisoners and Chinese coolies….if anyone were to say Singapore was well off and prosperous in those days were mainly the Brits and wealthy foreigners living off the sweat and tears off the backs of the poor locals doing all the hard laborious works for them. Singapore was a trading port back then, yes, but all its earnings were shipped back to Britain to feed the British empire. What Singapore is today is all the hard work of our own government, namely the PAP and may God bless LKY and his legacy forever.

In Singapore u can literally swim in naturally heated pool, waterplay ground in the afternoon everyday. In HK u cant. In singapore , u can leisurely walk safely around without fear of people crowding you if u are famous. In singapore, you can go to casinos easily everyday. In singapore, most public members will look out for children, will not do or say “adults” stuff if they see kids around. In singapore, most of the things, infrastructure, u see are curated towards child friendly in terms of education, development, greenery exposure. In singapore, u can feel safe for a kid as young as 8 years old to go home by themselves. There is a reason why most expats praise sg for being family friendly place. In HK, the above mentioned are a fucking no no.

BTW, my kids took public transportation alone in HK at age 11. HK is also pretty much crime free despite not having caning and death penalty. HK infrastructure is very good. In fact MTR is more efficient than Singapore's. HK has a high speed train 142 km length at 350 kmh top speed and 55 km bridge to Macao. Any bullet trains in Singapore to Malaysia?
