This video is about the 2nd core train route underneath Munich's city center.
The construction of Munich's "2. Stammstrecke" marks a pivotal effort to enhance the city's rail infrastructure. This ambitious project involves the creation of a second main tunnel parallel to the existing Stammstrecke, aiming to alleviate congestion and improve overall efficiency. Leveraging modern engineering and sustainable design, the new tunnel promises an upgraded travel experience for passengers. Munich's commitment to transparent communication and community engagement underscores its dedication to smart, interconnected urban development. The project not only addresses the city's immediate transportation needs but also positions Munich as a leader in forward-thinking urban planning.

While the Ringbahn is also a valid idea that should probably be built, I feel like the second trunk route is more important. Building a loop would allow for some new journeys and probably alleviate some pressure off the transfer stations, but it wouldn’t allow for a higher frequency on the outer branches of the network, which is the point of creating more core capacity. Every 20 with likely delays in the core or every 15 minutes with more reliability is a huge difference. The ring would probably still be built, because it connects an otherwise quite poorly connected part of the city to the network, but it’s going to feel much different then the Berlin ring Bahn with it‘s many transfer stations.
@mkltz0805
@mkltz0805 2 месяца назад
Building an extra Tunnel in the City Center by itself doesn’t allow you to run higher frequencies in the outskirts. It’s kinda unrelated because the problem on the outer tracks usually don’t derive from the stammstrecke but actually from sharing tracks with other services. for example S4 in the west shares its two tracks with freight, regional and long distance trains. So building two more tracks there and separating sbahn from the other services would actually allow you to run more frequent services.

While I agree the core needs an upgrade just looking at the maps you showed highlights the obvious flaw in the system. Everyone on one of the branches has to go to the core before they can access a neighbouring branch. Therefore, I'd suggest connecting the branches with a circle or something further out would make the network better to use and alleviate congestion in the core.

That's an idea that has been floated since the original S-Bahn proposal in the 1930s (the Nazi one that was never realized). Imperatur mentions current plans at 6:53. That's pretty far into the future, though (if it ever happens).

@justsamoo3480

@@prodbyNOVAERBut it isn’t, like rail transit and road traffic work very differently. Also you cannot just change how the city works, there will always be a great demand to serve the city centre, however a suburban rail loop should be built as an addition

You rarely need to travel from suburb to suburb in Munich. Most of the people travel to and from the city centre. And within the city centre, you use the metro or Tram system.

Funny thing, people in Brazil always complain about how construction works always complain about the delays on building subways here and use Germany as an good example of working on time, but apparently delays and costs overruns became a global problem in any place but China. 2037 completion date is crazy. São Paulo line 4 took 14 years to be built and it was a scandal. Imagine 20 years to built a shorter route. How the world got so bad at building? It’s crazy. By the way, great video Imperatur. I follow you because Cities Skylines and thought it was an B1M video, but as always you’re bringing great content. Keep it up.

The Chinese can't do magic either. The explosion in costs also affects the Chinese and it is not possible to speed up such complex tunnelling projects at great depths without compromising on quality. The quality of Chinese projects in particular is very questionable. It is one of the worst dictatorships in the world, they only say what doesn't damage their reputation!

One of the main reasons this got so expensive beyond the usual problems is that the planning was scandalously bad. They "overlooked" that if you got a lot of people deep underground you need emergency exists to get them out. They just "assumed" some fire escape shafts would be good enough, until a closer study said - nope, that's too far down. So they basically need a second tunnel just as an emergency escape, which meant re-doing the planning while the project was already under construction causing delays and extra costs. It's also been very obvious that the Bavarian state government delayed this getting out conveniently until after elections at that time ... As for the concept per se; it's of course very difficult to judge these projects from a non-expert perspective. But it seems to me that both an expansion of the Stammstrecke, the core route, and the circle line are necessary. So I wouldn't say the project is bad in principle. However, the cost is immense, and ... under those circumstances it's difficult to say whether this is the best use of such a massive chunk of money. More radical ideas that might have required taking space from roads and running aboveground weren't even seriously looked at because of course such a thing is politically impossible. Thus everyone gets to pay the bill to put infrastructure underground - well, train infrastructure. Cars can stay in the city aboveground, "obviously".
@Hans-gb4mv

Almost makes you wonder if it wouldn't have been simpler and cheaper to run parallel to the existing line and use that line's existing emergency infrastructure

My first thought was why aren't they building a circular line around Munich. I am sure that most of the people have their destination in another suburb and not in the city center.

In Britain we complained about the cost of the "Cross Rail" project, now known as the Elizabeth Line. Generally it has turned out to be a huge success with higher passenger numbers than expected. Some of the interchanges are truly ingenious, for example, at Barbican station to get from the old Northern Line to the Elizabeth line, one gets to ride on an elevator (lift) that moves up and down diagonally. The aesthetics are also far better than expected. Do take a ride on the Elizabeth Line and see for yourselves.

You think they would have learned from the Stuttgart 21 desaster with the massive delays and issues which came with it. This is only for S-Bahn now in Munich but has the same challenges - a delay by 9 years :D and getting a new tunnel is a huge strain for everyone living in these areas. I did it here in Stuttgart and it often was a nightmare with countless sleepless months. Good luck in the next 15 - 20 years ^^

Hamburg is also planning a new S-Bahn tunnel connection between the central station (Hauptbahnhof) and the upcoming new Altona station (currently known as Diebsteich) in order to make space and therefore give more capacities for regional and long distance trains running through the „Verbindungsbahn“ between Altona and Hauptbahnhof. The project’s also known as the „Verbindungsbahnentlastungstunnel“, or „Ferlemann-Tunnel“.

i know nothing about this topic so excuse me if i'm saying something stupid, but why are they running ALL cross-city trains through this corridor in the first place? on the maps you show, isn't there a very visible set of tracks between Heimeranplatz and Ostbahnhopf? it might provide less connections with the U-bahn but it's an obvious way to make the network less centralized and less saturated for virtually 0€

The tunnels are 10 kilometres long. The mere boring of the tunnels is certainly not the problem, it is the dense development and the immense depth of the project, the stadium at the railway station is mega complex, as is the one at Marienhof. In addition, the new line crosses under several existing underground railway lines, which also requires special consideration.

Hmm, Shinjuku railway station has 53 platforms, so I don't like your platform statistics :-) Sure the "core" station has "only" 35, but I think it is bit weird to discount the others, simply because they are at different levels, and operated by different people, etc.: when a station gets that big it is just not feasible to have "one" terminal, any more than a large airport does, and yet nobody refers to Frankfurt terminal 2 as a separate airport from Frankfurt terminal 1. But in any case, even if you do, it just shows how irrelevant platform count is as a statistic, given Shinjuku has "less platforms" than Munich, and yet serves a whopping 8 times as many people each day. It's all about passenger movements, after all, not how much space you take up!
