Elizabeth I was better than her father, but Henry VIII didn’t really fail though. He successfully broke from Rome, which gave England far more autonomy to do things their own way. Also, if England stayed Catholic, it would be less likely that the civil war and glorious revolution happen later. Plus he set up / invested in the Royal Navy, which would be the thing that made Britain a superpower in later centuries. Henry VIII was brutal and a tyrant at the end, but not without his influence and achievements.

@@piers389 Yup. I think "Queen of Titles" should be included in her titles. LOL.
@piers389
@piers389 Год назад
@King Ace ➡ Indeed. Her Majesty's official title (in just the UK) is: "Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith." ➡ In Canada, Her Majesty's full title is: "Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith." ➡ And a final interesting oddity surrounding naming; in the Channel Islands - the Crown Dependencies of the Bailiwick of Jersey (the place where the US state of New Jersey gets its name from) and the Bailiwick of Guernsey - the Queen is known as the Duke of Normandy, rather than the Duchess of Normandy. The claim to Normandy (and France in general) goes back ~half a millennium to when the entirety of France should have been ruled by the English Government and the English monarch. In fact, if one looks at the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom (and variants of the royal coat used by Elizabeth II and the Government, but excluding Scotland as royal coat is different), you will see "Dieu et Mon Droit" written at the bottom. This translates to "With God and My Right" (not 'With God at My Right, as many seem to think) which very literally means 'with God and the [monarch's] right to rule over France'. Unsurprisingly, this goes back to royal marriage and war with France. ➡ Sorry if that was too long (I've just realised it turned into a short essay!) or came across as patronising - it's not my intent. I'm not even British (I've lived in the United Kingdom since childhood and have dual nationality), but I find these bits of historical and royal trivia fascinating. PS: the arrows were to help make the comment seem less like a wall of text.
@kingace6186
@kingace6186 Год назад
@@piers389 No, it's fine. I enjoyed reading your essay. The history and trivia of the royal sovereign have always interested me. In fact, I like to think of the Queen's titles as a window into the crown's history. Also, the the different versions showcase the history of the sovereign & the geopolitical realities of the dominions and commonwealths.

Wow, make it seem like Mary I wanted to behead Lady Jane Grey! (She didn't, but was forced to after a second rebellion in Jane's name). She also burned the Protestants at the stake due to the belief at the time that being in the fire would scare them to face eternal hellfire so much that they would recant and immediately be able to go to heaven.

Elizabeth I was an amazing, strong lady...

Elizabeth I was not the nicest ruler, she had anabaptist and catholics quartered, she tortured a pregnant woman (Margaret Clitherow) she executed people who hided priests (Anne Line), she had black slaves and killed africans, she killed a lot of irishs, she executed her cousin, she made a cult of her personality, she made creepy jokes about her mother's death, she made the sailors who fought for her against the spanish armada starve to death because she did not want to paid them, she increased taxes and did not care if her people were dying because she wanted new dresses, she made propaganda and forbidded any bad information about her that's why we remember her as "good" queen Bess...

Appalled that Mary, Queen of Scots didn't even get a passing reference in this video. She made Elizabeth I look vulnerable in her later stage of life.

We do reenactments & the kids love it, especially the gory bits.But most of them also say the way history is taught in schools is boring.Such a shame.We also get a lot of kids at our digs who r full of enthusiasm.What a pity they cannot find better ways of passing on the enthusiasm,in schools.
