In book one of the Legends Thrawn trilogy (Heir to the Empire), the admiral under Thawn's command wonders what would have happened if Thrawn, who wanted to build a bigger fleet with the resources dedicated to the Death Star, had been in charge of the Imperial Navy's command and construction, instead of the superweapon-obsessed Emperor and the admiral-killing Vader. He believes that they might have destroyed the Rebels if only the Emperor had given Thrawn supreme authority over the Navy's resources and I have to agree with him. Edit: he also pondered what would have happened if Thrawn had been in command during the Battle of Endor, instead of the command structure-wrecking Vader.

"Loyalty" is one of the words I have associated with Thrawn since I first read the Thrawn trilogy. He shows it to his people and subordinates, inspires it, and earns it. Thrawn wouldn't be the character I love if this wasn't one of his defining traits.
@starwarsreadingclub
@starwarsreadingclub 5 лет назад
Absolutely agree IO. I think the thing that really makes Thrawn that might go unnoticed is that he can only do what he does through the loyalty of those that are his subordinates. Some (most lol) of his methods are unconventional, so if they weren't loyal, he wouldn't be able to achieve the things he does. The Thrawn trilogy is a great example, same with Outbound Flight imo. Zahn has done a great job bringing this into Canon as well with Eli and Commodore Faro.

Thrawn was pretty harsh when incompetence was shown but rewarded competent practice. I remember in Zawn's original Thrawn Trilogy, a tractor beam officer on the Chimaera bumbled and let the Rebels get away. Thrawn had him executed on the spot due to his incompetence. Later on, something similar happened. Everybody on the bridge expected that new tractor beam officer to be executed, like what happened to the previous guy. Thrawn demanded to know how this happened. You see, Thrawn already knew the man's job but he needed to be clear the officer knew his. The man explained his actions, all he tried to do to capture the Rebels. And Thrawn concurred. All the actions the officer did were correct even though the end result was a failure. Thrawn instead promoted the man on the spot. Another thing I liked with Thrawn was that he was not fond of wasting Imperial resources, especially his men. Thrawn was the only major Imperial leader that garnered respect and true loyalty, and he himself was loyal to Palpatine's cause and the Galactic Empire. As for the comic page this video showed where Thrawn didn't like the idea of a singular mega weapon, it's a valid statement. How many ships could the Imperial Navy have had with the resources dumped into not one, but TWO Death Stars? Those beasts sucked away a lot of resources and men from the Empire. A larger Imperial Navy would have been better able to police the Empire and deal with threats. How many Star Destroyers could the navy have gotten for one Death Star?
@CaptainFirespitter
@CaptainFirespitter 5 лет назад
Warmaker01 it wasn’t so much that the first tractor beam operator was incompetent that got him executed (he definitely was though!) But it was the fact the man refused to learn from his mistakes and even tried to redirect blame to someone else. Thrawn is completely fine with people failing in their duties, so long as they show that they are more than willing to learn from their mistakes and not repeat them. Here’s a quote from Thrawn himself that sums this up perfectly: “Anyone can make an error, ensign. But that error doesn’t become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.” In all honesty, Thrawn is the only imperial that I’d willingly serve under within the empire.
@9f81rsd00
@9f81rsd00 4 года назад
I remember one story where Thrawn rewarded a unit/squad/crew that performed competently and brilliantly despite failing their main if not all their objectives because of an unforeseen, and for them, uncontrollable, variable. Suffice to say, they became very loyal to Thrawn.
@LedosKell
@LedosKell 3 года назад
This was in The Last Command novel of the original Thrawn trilogy. A younger officer attempted a maneuver to try to capture Luke Skywalker with a novel use of the tractor beams, which ultimately failed. This is directly compared to a similar encounter in the first novel, Heir To The Empire, where another officer did some brain dead move and endangered the lives of other Imperials iirc. This was one of the few times Thrawn acted Vader-like and had the officer in the first novel executed. But because the young officer attempted something that was not covered in Imperial training manuals, despite it not working, Thrawn promoted him and tasked him with trying to make this attempted maneuver a functioning tactic to be used in future training doctrines. Pellaeon was there to witness this and that's when he realized 'Before this, our forces were willing to fight for him. Now, they will be willing to die for him'. That was also the moment I became a lifelong fan of Thrawn.
@seanwhitman8353

@@LedosKell Thrawn rewarded competence and initiative, which are very valuable things in an officer corps. He also encouraged being able to learn from mistakes, as being able to adapt the next time the same tactic is used against you is highly important. Thrawn definitely was not a man to throw away a resource like a competent officer simply due to one or two failures that were outside of their control.

Thrawn actually enjoys art because he feels it gives insight to people and it's culture. It's pretty noticeable in the books as he collects them or will make a remark that certain people have ties be it political or economical based on simple artwork. I think the thing Thrawn values greatly, maybe more than loyalty, is knowledge and will often go out of his way to collect it such as with the gravity well or watching how the enemy responses to an attack.

@@christiannewaye7306I completely agree with that. Thrawn in the books is nothing compared to Thrawn in Rebels. Thrawn in Rebels was only thwarted truly by his subordinates. Every time he wanted to achieve something, his subordinates screwed up. But Thrawn in the books would have either anticipated his subordinates failure and acted accordingly or he would have had his subordinates learn from the experience. But even when I could see that an officer of his was going to disobey orders, Thrawn did not. Also Thrawn did not really inspire me in the TV show like he does in the books. In rebels he seems more like an intelligent guy, but in the books he seems like an observant character with many different motivations and thoughts. In Rebels it just feels like the classic 'Good Guys vs Bad Guy' trope. Nothing wrong with that might I add. It's just disappointing, that's all. It feels like a waste of a brilliant character.

@therealdonnawagner
@therealdonnawagner Год назад
@@countof3everybodyOD I disagree. Simply because he's a focused individual doesn't mean he's "one note". I actually think Zahn did a great job elevating the character in his newer books as well. You can see where he took specific criticisms people had of Thrawn in his Legends writing and directly translated that into added complexity and development of the character. Being someone who is routinized and has a personality that is dependable and even keel (ISTJ), I tend to appreciate the solidity of an individual even if there might be reasons why I disagree with some of their decisions. I would say Thrawn fits very well into that structure as a character. 😊

This was an awful way for them to show why Thrawn respects Vader. It doesn't really make much sense. A ship being pulled out from hyperspace, but without any sign of why, is a huge red flag, and Vader would be all over investigating it. Also, "I have no problem being killed for treason because you are truly loyal." Even given his past problems, this is some stupid logic lol
@tenjenk
@tenjenk 4 года назад
its not that they didnt mind it being investigated, it was that from their point of view his repeated failed attempts looked like a waste of empire resources and the act of a man desperately trying to help his people.

I thought in the the book Thrawn, the admiral worked with Anakin in the past and figured out who Vader was. This is an awesome addition to their story! Thrawn was my favorite character since I first read Timothy Zahn back in high school: I still have hope that Leia ‘s call for help to the outer reaches of space in the last Jedi pull in the Chiss, that would be such a blast :D

Unfortunately, I don't think so. The good news is that they haven't shown themselves to shy away from Vader when it comes to comics. My hope is that even though his current Vader comic is coming to an end, a new one will emerge shortly. And hopefully set between Episode 5 and Episode 6 in my opinion. I wouldn't mind seeing some post-ESB Vader in the current Canon. :)

Vader and Thrawn had so similarities in both of theirs growing up, neither of them very Rich or had happy childhood? neither of them looked down on the other and saw something in each other and became something close to friends? which is very rare for the Dark side and the Imperial Side to be so true, and it would have been amazing to see Thrawn and Vader Starwars movie for sure. I am not an expert on Thrawn or much of the lore of Starwars at all, but knowing how so very few Imerial officers didn t trust or liked Vader, Thrawn or even Piet says everything. I can say though I rather would follow guy like Admiral Thrawn, Lord Vader or Admiral Piet, says few things about others who came from far diffrent bakground than atleast these fellows.
