He's the kind of character that I hate, but that I LOVE to hate, ya know? It's like Navi. Sure, she's obnoxious, and despite being your supposed helper she's pretty much never remotely helpful, but OoT wouldn't be the same without her, ya know? I hate having to look at Tingle's face, or his body squeezed into that skin-tight suit, but I can't help but love him in spite of it. The only thing more painful that having to look at Tingle is not getting to see him at all.
Personally, I didn't mind tingle. I thought he was fine. And in majoras mask, I usually opt to take his picture for the heart piece rather than the deku kings.
Reverse, played MM since childhood and YOU CAN TAKE A PICTURE OF TINGLE FOR THE HEART PIECE? You really do find things out every day in this game. Wild.
Always liked Tingle ever since his debut, he was a weird idiot who just struck a cord with me, he didn't have to be a brave handsome hero, or a majestic beautiful princess to stand out, he just had to be himself, so what if he was different, he loved himself and just wanted to bring others happiness... ..not counting David Jr....
Better to be a lovable weird idiot than a forgettable side character. Never liked him, but he grew on me. Things just aren't the same without him. And he isn't really an idiot. He's actually an unorthodox genius who's living life the best way he knows how. He runs his own business whilst pursuing his passion. And in Wind Waker, he's even got employees. Tingle also has approximate knowledge of many things, which are _disconcertingly_ accurate given that he has no comprehensible way of knowing anything about who or what Link is. He's got to have connections to genuinely important characters somewhere.
I always thought Koltin and Kilton were supposed to be the new versions of Tingle. It seemed especially more apparent with Kilton. He is this strange looking older little man witn an obsession with turning into a blupee. That's practically the definition of Tingle but with a fairy instead. Plus, if you take their names and reverse the syllables, you get Tinkol and Tonkil. Names being different but similar like that was a common thing in these new games.
I was always pretty neutral on Tingle. I didn't LIKE him growing up 'cause my tastes always leaned towards the cute and the pretty rather than the goofy and the quirky, but there was always something a little bit alienating about how visceral the hate for him was, that to me speaks to the same kind of mentality that leads to bullying and people being too scared to break the mould so they tone down their creativity to the boring and safe, and that makes me kind of sad. I feel like he speaks to something important to Japan, the many bored middle aged officeworkers who want a bit of fantasy and fun in their lives, and that's a precious outlet that needs protecting whether I vibe with it or not.
I don't even know who Tingle was before I watched this video. However, I'm being completely honest with you when I say, this character just doesn't push the right buttons for me😂. I really just don't like him and I can't point a reason as to why. But I'm not a bully as to what you were trying to hint at
Likewise. I didn't... Like him, as such... But it wasn't like he hurt my enjoyment of the games he was in. He was harmless and I do kind of miss his presence.
I'm mostly indifferent to him. I liked his Majora's Mask characterization the best, where he comes off as amusing and endearing. In Wind Waker, I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed the Triforce Quest, but I found Tingle to be kinda creepy due to his cultist characterization. Now I don't care much for the kind of humor attached to him, where it's all about exaggerated facial expressions and uncanny character design, I feel like they already lean too hard into that in general post N64. If they could bring him back, I'd be happy if they'd make him less of a forced joke and more of a whimsical manchild trying to have magical experiences in a world that's trying to drag him down to Earth.
Rather than fully gate area maps behind him, like in Majora's Mask, perhaps he could mark locations of treasure of points or interest within the region. Things you would be able to find othwise, but are helpful nontheless.

@@RandonPersom542 God hand and Vanquish come to mind, they even gave Demon Souls a shitty review back in the day before it was part of a "cool" series. It's mainly anything niche or games that require multiple playthroughs to get good at/ build the player's skill on or anything that presents some level of culture barrier. And nowdays anything that isn't woke and ugly will get low points with them. They don't understand games as art and only care about being part of pop culture and are too lazy to dedicate time to even beat most games that they review.
Personally I don't like Tingle, but I don't maliciously hate him. Honestly, if Tingle needs a new role, I could think of several. New jobs for Tingle: 1: Courier: As a mailman who delivers to his client, he can wait until either we zone into a new area, or wait until all threats are eliminated, and dispense some update in-game, or a reward that was delayed. 2: Side Quest: Since tingle fancies himself a fairy, he could have a side-quest tailored to his pursuits. We log all the Fairy Fountain locations, and doing so will allow us a new quest to unlock a new weapon, such as "The Great Fairy Sword". A weapon that will passively heal Link over time as the sword itself could have lore saying: "Quenched in the tears of the great fairy herself for the sake of protecting her mortal lover, this sword offers protection and healing to whoever wields it. Known to purge evil, and heal the sick, it is more a healing item than an actual weapon.". 3: Minigame clerk: Tingle can host a minigame shop where you can acquire unlocks, extra rupees, or more! Minigames like an archery game, a test your luck, test your sight, or even to run horse races where you can either bet on someone, or bet on yourself to win! He could run the minigames in Hyrule and say it's the family business since his family mapped out all of Hyrule. 4: Tutorial guide: Ideally in the early game as a weapon master, he'll teach us the basics of what he calls "Fairy Swordsmanship", and teaches the basic controls. He'll also teach us new ways in how to use our weapons and tools, and his school can be where you can review or re-learn mechanics you may have forgotten in the likelihood of you not playing for a while. He'll gleefully rejoice that you want to learn or re-learn something. 5: Waypoint guide: At any point, Tingle can be called to assist you by marking a waypoint you need on the map, and will hover above you or the way point. Once you reach your intended waypoint, he'll thank you for letting him help guide your path, and be on his merry way. 6: Upgrade foreman: Tingle will have his staff dressed like him, and he'll offer a service of upgrading and repairing any damaged or broken weapons or tools. He'll run the front desk, and have his staff handle the rest.
I remember being a middle schooler thinking it was so funny shooting tingle down in MM. I didn't even buy his maps, I just loved shooting his balloon haha. He probably thought I was weird and annoying. I think it would've been cool to have him back in Tears of the Kingdom seeing as they had floating chunks of land. He could've been one of the many shrine NPC's
Another thing about spinoffs, straying from the subject, people were heavily speculating about a Zelda spinoff title which it’s just Princess Zelda, no Link, no Ganon(dorf). Princess Peach: Showtime is the first time in a Mario universe game that had no other familiar characters in the series present besides Peach and a handful of Toads. Prior to the announcement of Echoes of Wisdom, folks like myself were devising ideas for a “Princess Zelda-only” spinoff. Then, guess what? The idea becomes a mainline entry with Zelda in “vanilla” status. But that’s not the important part. It’s reported that the player still has to play as Link. How the approach of playing both Link and Zelda is going to play out remains a mystery until the game releases. Bottom line, Echoes is not going to be a Zelda-only game. Sure there’s the prologue in the trailer where we play as Link, but the rest of the game isn’t just Zelda. So… so much on that concept… What’s bizarre is that despite Zelda being on a similar tier status as Mario, the series doesn’t seem to have room for an abundance of spinoffs in the same capacity as Mario. The only things close for worldwide audiences are Hyrule Warriors, Cadence of Hyrule, and Smash Bros. But no “Tingle’s Mansion”, no “Ganon’s Minions”, no “Princess Zelda: Showdown”? Ok, I made up these titles, but c’mon, Nintendo. I’m still hopeful that we might get to have the Zelda-only spinoff we were cooking ideas for before Echoes, but whatever is Zelda-related has to be mainline… and probably in approaches many fans will disapprove. Should this spinoff be taken into consideration, I just want Princess Zelda as my favorite Meteor Heel stomping troll I know and love in Smash Ultimate to be given full-fledged characterization and fleshed-out personality. And seeing as Nintendo has recently been putting out Japan-exclusive titles overseas, we might get the Tingle games in similar fashion.
It would’ve been interesting if Tingle was in TOTK. You’re flying around in the sky islands and see a man floating in a red balloon, and you have to shoot him down, talk to him, and buy special gear or maps to the Depths. In any case, perhaps Kilton and Kolton are descendants of Tingle since they are all little goblin-looking halflings that have a strange obsession with ethereal creatures…Kilton wants to be a monster, Kolton wants to be a Satori, and Tingle wants to be a fairy. They also all make deals with Link for special items.
I think it shouldn't be underestimated how much his Wind Waker role and triforce chart quest in specific created the Tingle backlash. No one particularly minded him in particular in Majora's Mask- it was far more common to hate on Majora's Mask as a whole (unthinkable nowadays). But disdain for "cartoonish" in Zelda was SO BIG in the Wind Waker era, elements like him earned people's ire in a way they didn't in past entries. I'd imagine if the history of the Zelda games was mostly the same up until Minish Cap except Wind Waker didn't exist (and that artstyle was just a handheld entry thing or something), people would have gotten significantly less worked up about Tingle. Personally I think a lot of the anti-Tingle backlash was really stupid and borne out of overreacting to things Nintendo does as "trends in the wrong direction". Nintendo tries new things too often to trend in any direction. I don't LIKE Tingle enough to want him back but I wouldn't care if he did come back in some way.

I skimmed through ALL 150+ comments to say the one word you all refused to say: *GAY.* Even though Tingle is known to have female romantic interests, the problem in the west of the early 2000s and regrettably still to this day is homophobia. Tingle wants to be a "Fairy," but at least in western culture slang, that can be a derogatory term for a gay man. While the smear campaign by IGN was one homophobic factor, it probably came down to localization. When you consider his origin has a disapproving father involved in his decision to be a fairy, it sounds familiar to those who may be struggling to come out as openly gay, queer, etc. I also instantly think of the classic iDubbbz moment in a Filthy Frank video: dressed in a Tingle morphsuit jumping down from a fridge *dramatic landing pause* "AH'M GAY!" Now the flipside: his representation might be offensive to to the LGBTQIA community. Back then in the 90s and early 2000s, a character could be a one off ambiguously non-straight character for laughs. I am not saying that's how it should be, that's dog whistle bigotry. Now there would be backlash for portraying the stereoty;pes.
Indeed, I would go as far as to suspect that future remakes of games Tingle does appear in would remove him from those games and have whatever roles he does play given to someone else for that reason.

I never really though about it but yeah, Tingle is missing from the new games! A shame since i did often enjoy his antics, hope we get him back in some way or atleast a Tingle'esque character (like Purlo in TP) Thanks for covering this
Its a small thing but technically, Twilight Princess was actually the last time we saw Tingle, he runs the grappling game in Castle Town... well technically the character is called Purlo but if you really take the time to look at him the resemblance is basically on point, flamboyant outfit with a green hood that covers the everything but his face, a Beauty mark/mole and his blue pocket-watch. Ive been meh with Tingle, don't like him but I don't hate him either, hes just a weird dude doing weird things, I guess he's a case of doesn't translate well, since 35 year old dudes with hyperfxations isn't seen as something comical in the west and more as creepy and pathetic. I think Kilton and Koltin may be the spiritual successors to tingle, grown up dudes with particular weird obsessions, being monsters and blupees respectively, and you could argue that what happens with Koltin would have been the natural conclusion to Tingle, maybe he did find a way to become a fairy.

Understanding this really brings to light the duality between eastern love and western hate for the character. I don't particularly mind if he appears in other games since Zelda tends to always have characters like that present in some form or another. Even in Twilight Princess, the "most serious" Zelda title had those clown dudes at Lake Hylia and then there was Malo Mart as well. Zelda while showing off some serious and dark themes also has that heir of whimsy that characters like Tingle bring to the table. That said I also wouldn't miss him if he doesn't come back either.
Even though I'm the age of 35, just to emphasize how creepy this is, no fairy has come to me yet. My father tells me to grow up and act my age, but why? I prefer offending people on the streets. I needed a patch to play the Tingle DS game in English. I think Tingle was going to have a 3DS title that got canned.
In a potential third installment of the BotW Zelda series I'd like to see a traveling tingle, see him in a blimp mapping out a new land. Possibly Termina or maybe the ground shifts and much of hyrule ascends to the depths making a new world. Just replace towers and use Tingle instead.
I miss the hilariously quirky characters Nintendo used to make. If you go back to OOT and just observe the NPCs, they’re all so hilariously weird. That sort of thing used to be what set Nintendo games apart, they had a ton of character and quirky ideas translating into fun game design.
I didn't have any strong feelings about tingle in majora's mask, he's a man child but I don't find that particularly funny on its own. But they made him a little mean in wind waker and minish cap irt his relationship with his brothers, so I started liking him less then. Not to the point of hatred, just not really into his whole shtick
Wind waker and Four Swords Adventures introduced Tingle's greed which eventually became the basis for Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland. If you were going to break Tingle away from his map maker identity for a Breath of the Wild-style game, then focusing on his greed would be a perfect avenue to take him down.

I have absolutely no recollction of people hating Tingle back then. He was weird, sure, but still funny and strange enough to be an interesting character in a fantasy game. I only ever heard US game journalists complain about him lol (But then again I'm from the EU... maybe it's one of those US-specific issues which everybody had to go with back then)
Tingle reminds me of those Japanese comedy shows with men wearing costumes and doing physical tests and competing. Japan loves this crap, but I don't think it works in the West
I remember seeing Tingle Island in BOTW and both cringing and giggling the whole way to go find the guy, even if just as an Easter egg. I was, disappointed to say the least. Then I found his gear and was, cringing and giggling while I showed it to my wife, who also got a laugh. We got ahold of Wind Waker and I showed off Tingke, and again, we laughed and cringed. Hes goofy and awkward and, I don’t hate him, nor do I particularly love him. I just, found him a funny thing to playfully groan at.
People complain about how safe and sanitary Nintendo was following the Wii and DS, but then demand weirdos like Tingle don't show up. My favorite Nintendo stuff is either weirdly dark, or completely oddball.

Tears of the Kingdom would've been the perfect game to bring him back, with the floating balloons etc. Maybe stranded on a solitary sky island the same way he was in Wind Waker. Would've been a fun easter egg. But Tingle is a character tied to his era the same way "green hat Link" is. The ugly green bodysuit of Tingle mirror the noble tunic of the hero, and Link is predominantly wearing blue in this iteration, it just doesn't work. I''d say Kilton is the spiritual successor of Tingle. A weird little guy using balloons to travel. His brother Koltin is even close in that regard, his goal being to become a surnatural creature itself, the same way Tingle want to be a fairy.
