Why to change the sensor on an SRL8 leak detector

I have purchased and tested ALL the HVAC refrigerant leak detectors. The SRL8 is the most sensitive for HFC refrigerants such as R410a and R134. This videos shows why the sensor needs to be changed at least once per year on the Fieldpiece SRL8 leak detector. The HFC leak standard bottle is part number 69386 from Yellow jacket

I have the SRL8 & it picks up R410a great but I don't trust it because it false trips too much. I never heard about humidity being a reason for a false trip but it goes off any time I get near an evaporator even when I know the leak is outside. It even goes off around lettuce so the humidity issue makes sense. I was thinking of changing the sensor but I wouldn't think a bad sensor would make it too sensitive. A damp evaporator is going to be really high in humidity so how do you know when you're sensing gas or high humidity?

Humidity is an issue. It isn't bad if you know about it though. Yes, wet evaporators set it off. You can run the fan for 5 minutes to dry out the evap. Also, your body will set it off in a hot attic if you are sweating. So, keep it far away when your sweat is setting it off. I switched to the NAVAC NML1 a year ago and noticed it is more stable. It uses the exact same sensor as the SRL8. I will evaluate the new updated version of the SRL8 in a couple of weeks. I will make an update video. As a rule of thumb. Humidity sensitivity isn't going to be consistent. A leak will be consistent.

@@NathansHVAC Thanks for the ideas. I've tried plenty of leak detectors through the years & so far nothing has been as stable as the old 120v. H10G. It wasn't the most sensitive but it's rock solid. I have the H10 Pro & it's not even in the same league as the H10G. I like the SRL8 because of how sensitive & easy it is to use but these false readings make me doubt it every time I pick up a leak so I have to grab another detector to confirm the leak. Now that you've made me aware of the humidity issue I'll see if I can work with it a little better.

Good video for the price field piece is asking for that machine you should not have false alarms constant zeroing moving from room to room and so on like you are doing there are too many variables it’s seems like one would need a backup machine to check that machine readings it don’t seem like it is worth the price.

Thanx for the excellent video! Have you tried it on vehicles w/R134A? If so, how well does it do?

So would you recommend switching it to manual inside the area of the space you're searching then?

Nathan, so is this a 2 3 or 4 pass coil? A cold coil air will drop. Then as a dye man. Dye charge schedule a fallow up and get out the flash light. That said I have a FP2 I keep it clean and serviced. It will hit test gas at 3/16". That said I find leaks that would require a head mounted microscope with die after a week of run time.

Are you talking about the Fieldpiece SRL2?
@MinnesotaHvAc
@MinnesotaHvAc 4 года назад
@@NathansHVAC yes srl2. Spell check. I have been a leader to hit off of test gas with it however it's not consistent. I'm looking at the srl8. That said I picked up the new dye kit today. As I have a sub 1 lbs leak per year on a 18k ruud system. Tomorrow I'll dye it and return sunday with the glasses and lights and it will take less than 15 minutes to see weld coil or service valve leaks.

I bought a brand new years ago. Used it a few times and now it won't stop beeping when I turned it on. I stopped using it years ago and when I turn it on today it's still beeping. Do you know what this can be?

You might try blowing air in the sensor. You can use your breath. Just remove it and try. There may be a piece of dust lodged in the sensor. Otherwise, you can replace the sensor for about $55. It is a good idea to replace the sensor yearly anyway to keep best sensitivity.

Ultra sensitive, super finicky, and definitely not cheap to get ahold of. Reminds me of something else in my past.

Do you prefer heated diode over infrared for 410a?

Heated diode is 10x more sensitive. www.dropbox.com/s/o9d3ur4wuhleai8/Leak%20Detector%20Sensitivity%20Report.pdf?dl=0

Hey Brother, I had a new H10 which was useless for R410-A. I purchased the SRL8 after watching your videos on the testing. I notice your air pump is much louder than mine. What could be the reason? My pump wearing out??
@NathansHVAC
@NathansHVAC 7 лет назад
A/C SuperKool the pump doesn't pull much. There is a spec in cc per minute. I don't know if it is published. I verify by putting the probe in my ear. Sounds funny. Anyway, make sure to change the sensor yearly. Also I'm evaluating a new testo that looks promising. The srl8 neucence trips are annoying. But, if you detector ever starts acting nice and not neucence tripping, you definitely have a worn out sensor.

Nice, but How do I change the sensor? Where is the sensor located?
@NathansHVAC
@NathansHVAC 6 лет назад
The sensor is located at the base of the flex pipe where it connects to the main body. Just unscrew the black pipe. Also, make sure to take note of the polarity when removing it.

There was no description. The sensor has a small nose. I have incorporated this position showing to the small white spot. Hope it is correct. Tonight, I will turn the device on and test it. Thanks

Mine goes off on Big Blue bubbles. Kinda aggravating.

Yep. PVC glue. Breath. It goes off on everything. But, it is the most sensitive leak detector I have been able to find for under $5K.
