Why Touch-Screen MacBooks are a Bad Idea

People have been asking Apple to put a touchscreen on their Macs, but there might a very valid reason why they haven't done it. So we decided to make one ourselves and see how it goes.

@matekovacs2696
@matekovacs2696 3 года назад
EXACTLY. iPadOS could as well be called NetflixOS or PencilOS, as it isn't good for anything other than content consumption and graphics/handwriting/drawing. The new iPad Pro, with full Thunderbolt support, M1 chip, XDR screen, LIDAR sensor, Magic Keyboard... But then it is all for nothing because iPadOS is still just a little more than "iOS but bigger". Just imagine... Scanning something with the LIDAR, and importing straight into your favorite CAD software. Programming on the go, on a super efficient, small, lightweight device. Writing code, and navigating the database map / UML diagram by touch. Drawing by pencil, and then using full Adobe suite to edit it.
@DrAnimePhD
@DrAnimePhD 2 года назад
THANK YOU! It’s why I thought putting M1 in the iPad Pro was foolish since the iPad can’t take full advantage of the Mac’s chip. No multiuser support, no sideloading, and no pro apps means you’ll never get the full experience with iPadOS, and with the Mac chip in it and it being more expensive than a Mac, why would you buy the iPad Pro over a cheaper Mac? I think Apple’s whole point is “if we give you an actually usable trackpad with gestures you don’t really need touch”. The trackpad already has tap, swipe, zoom, pinch, etc., and it does so perfectly. If I have the all the gestures I want in a more ergonomic position, there’s absolutely no need for a touchscreen. Personally, I use my MacBook Pro every day with a big screen plugged in and I can reach both monitors perfectly with my trackpad. I don’t even feel the need for a mouse... I only use it every many months when I have to use Blender or something else that is 3D related.

The thing about touch is it's an option. It's nice to have when you need it, for example when doing CAD on the go in F360, you can properly move around it in 3d, in ways you can't with the touchpad. And just there the couple times you use it, I have an xps and rarely use it, but I get annoyed when using another laptop that doesn't, sometimes.

Agree, a Mac user here and Windows laptop user for work. When I have my work laptop on my lap. Then the touchscreen is actually more ergonomic as he trackpad makes me sit more cramped. But I have to agree that outside of that I rarely use it. But I rather have something that is convenient when I can use it than not have it because it's not being used all the time. @@Jehty_ I think Apple will end up adding touch support to Mac OS once the new M1X chips come out next year. I think a lot of legacy Mac OS software would need to be re-written to properly have multi touch gesture support, and the icons would also need some resizing. But I think there will be a convergence point where Iphone, Ipad and Mac OS would be one interface with just a different screen size, slightly different internal chip TDP's, and varying battery sizes.

I find a touch screen useful for laptops, especially if I'm doing something that requires a lot of scrolling. Depending on how you're seated, having your arm resting on the surface in front of you and using your thumb to scroll (like you would on a phone) is far more comfortable than using the track pad. I don't use the touch screen super often on my laptop, but when I do, I'm glad it's there. It's one of those "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it" type of things imo.

I'm a pervert. My laptop sits on the top shelf of a STIM R-26 "laptop+projector" tripod and on the lower shelf I have a regular keyboard+mouse set to control it. When I sit down, my laptop stands right before my eyes or even slightly above. This forces me to keep an upright posture but also makes the extra mouse and keyboard necessary. But when I stand up, I can still use my laptop comfortably without any extra adjustments (besides tilting the screen) but this time using the touchpad and the laptop keyboard. The point is that the sitting position with this setup is very comfortable for using a touchscreen+ stylus or finger. That's why I'm gonna buy a laptop with touchscreen this time. Microsoft Surface seems perfect but I'm sure that my friend will change my mind and I will and up with something chinese.
@Xpuc

I see what you mean, I must admit that in a Windows machine this would be a lot more ‘intuitive’ as it’s super rare to find a good trackpad on a Windows lappy. 99% of the laptops out there lack the Apple fluid operation, ranging from terrible trackpads, to underpowered hardware and poorly implemented software leading to stuttering and lagging. Having a finger move a page on the screen exactly the distance you want is very desirable as all of the shortcomings I listed above make it impossible to predict the distance otherwise. Mac trackpads are just razor sharp, and never miss a beat. With little movement you can be very very precise every-single-time. Even my ‘apple hater’ friends appreciate the Apple trackpads.

I'm an it tech and use a surface as my work laptop. While that device has many (many many many) shortcomings, the touchscreen is definitely a feature. Not having to switch between keyboards and mice whilst troubleshooting a users pc, or being able to scroll down an Ifixit guide and check my email without having to drop my tools is such a useful feature. Now I don't pretend to be a common use case, but the point I'm trying to make is that there are scenarios where having to switch to an iPad is so much less convenient than just having a touchscreen on a laptop. Windows laptops show that the addition of touchscreen isn't that expensive and the benefits to use cases like mine are enough that I put up with the many failings of my surface pro. Tldr if Mac makes a Mac book pro with a touchscreen I would use it.

A touchscreen that you hold should be no more than 12 inches diagonal, and preferably less. That's kind of puny for a laptop. I do have one of the larger iPad Pros, but frankly my next iPad Pro will be the smaller one. There is some small overlap range, with smaller laptops (those less geared towards productivity) being plausible in the 11" to 12" range. But, I really don't care whether a laptop that small ran a full OS. I suppose it might be useful if I could hook it up to a monitor and have it convert to a full OS, but expecting Apple to cater to that by supplying a completely different mode of operation when connected vs disconnected from the monitor is a lot to ask. I do expect that they will continue down the continuity/universal-control route to make multiple Apple devices more-and-more seamless.

Having a touchscreen on a laptop is most useful when you have it on your lap. If you are in bed or on the couch using a laptop, you can type in a comfortable position then slide your fingers behind the screen to use your thumb to scroll just like a phone. It makes editing documents way more comfortable because scrolling up and down with your thumb is a far easier position for your hands than reaching down below the keyboard and scrolling with the tips of two fingers.

If a relative wants to show me something on their laptop whether it is a news story or a product on Amazon, I can easily view it and interact through the touchscreen. I don't have to make them move so I can fully sit down and use the trackpad or mouse, all I have to do is stand next to them and scroll or click the few things I need to. That is one great use of a touchscreen, letting other people use the device at the same time.

I'd say the issue is the screen size and resolution that's the biggest issue. I used a 17inch laptop with a touchscreen and there were days of use where I never touched the keyboard or trackpad after signing in. It was so convenient to be leaned in slightly, so my hands could poke at the icons on my taskbar or scroll a page while being near enough to the keyboard that using the traditional laptop interface wasn't a hassle. Since most of what I was doing had already had some touch optimization for mobile web browsing, very rarely did I need to make a big deal of having my arms in the air to use the touchscreen. Perhaps the size of the screen affected how easily I could press UI elements. Maybe the screen res, and therefor windows UI scale, helped too. But I think that at the same time, it's not a tool for productivity minded activities. Like was said in the video, the mouse is a precision instrument. I never used the touchscreen if I was doing work. Never. it was only when I was relaxing in front of my laptop that I used it.
