Would actually be cool if that detachment allowed certain other characters to join poxwalkers. Noxious blightbringers spring to mind as a good leader. And thematic.
Fitting, I just restarted the hobby after many many years of not doing any tabletop and Iam currently waiting for my death guard combat patrol to show up ^^
I have Typhus leading ten Blightlords and a squad of accursed cultists that are painted to be all rotten as a combat patrol ( its technically 515 points ) the models all look so cool and make for fun games
"Why is Typhus so strong right now". Because he was already really strong and they decided to cut his points by 25% for no reason. I love Death Guard. I understand the points increases to plague Marines and PBCs but I have no idea why they gave us discounts on Blight Drones, Typhus or Death Shroud. If they wanted to increase internal balance then they just missed the Blight Haulers, Lord of Contagion and Blight Lord termies that were the units that are struggling to find a place.
I saw the DG changes and literally laughed out loud. As you said, the units that were strong/borderline OP were buffed and the ones that needed help like BLs weren't touched. Combine that with the Space Marine changes (nerfs to Aggressors, Inceptors, Redemptors with zero changes to dogshit units like Reivers) and the absurdity of not touching C'tan for Necrons have convinced me of 2 things: 1) GW does not play their own game and 2) points changes are done solely for purposes of hitting specific sales goals and not for balance.
Typhus was the first DG infantry model i painted when i started playing in 9th when they got a codex, hes got a special place in my heart. Im so glad he's awesome now, in 9th he kinda sucked pretty hard, especially because he used to be 165pts. Now, he hits almost as hard as Mortarion for a 1/4 of the points, lol. Granted morty lost like half his damage output from 9th to 10th.
I think most people domt seem to realise that hes often run solo for deep strike objective doing. You can still "shoot" with him while you cleanse or do other actions, and he's still a tanky dude even on his own
Typhus has been auto-include in my DG lists long before 10e. Mortarion is about 50/50, whereas Typhus is 100%. Typhus didn’t need a points drop, but I’ll take it because of the points nerfs to Plague Marines and Plagueburst Crawlers. The recent DG points changes fortunately didn’t disrupt by DG lists because I use Typhus, Lord-Virulence, Plague Marines, Deathshroud Terminators, Bloat Drones, and Plague-Crawlers in virtually every list, and they ended up rebalancing. I just adjusted the Enhancements and every list was 1995-2000 points. Returning to Typhus, I doubt he’ll remain at 80 points because that seems like a repeat of Black Templars’ Helbrecht and Grimaldus being 95 points and getting nerfed to 120. I suspect GW dropped Typhus’ points cost to 80 so they can sell as many DG Combat Patrols or Typhus solo boxes before the 10e Death Guard Codex is released, when a new DG Combat Patrol will be released featuring a different character.
"I suspect GW dropped Typhus’ points cost to 80 so they can sell as many DG Combat Patrols or Typhus solo boxes before the 10e Death Guard Codex is released, when a new DG Combat Patrol will be released featuring a different character." ^ This is 100% exactly why it was done. His points were already low for what you get, 80 is just silly.
@@JimH. Is that why dark angels were absolutely nerfed hard right when their deathwing was shown off which made a ton of people talk about not wanting them? Doesnt really follow your theory
@@JimH.Or hive tyrants getting hard nerfed acrossed the board. oh wait, theyre in the christmas box with the Norn That doesnt make sense to your theory
@@scolack123 The Hive Tyrant was included in the Onslaught Swarm Christmas box because GW discontinued the 9e Tyranids CP box with the Hive Tyrant, and the solo boxes are difficult to find. The Hive Tyrant getting nerfed in the points update doesn’t matter because it’s an essential character kit for Tyranids and can be built as 3 different variants. Rather than restocking Hive Tyrant solo kits, GW included them in the Onslaught box to entice Tyranids players to spend more $$$. One of the reason I purchased the Onslaught Swarm box was for the Hive Tyrant. I already owned one from the 9e CP box but I wanted a Winged Hive Tyrant too. GW traditionally uses their Christmas boxes to discount and get rid of overstock model kits that aren’t selling, as well as uses the quarterly points updates to sell more products. For example, CSM Chaos Lords are older models that haven’t been included in CP or discount boxes… ever? Even though Chaos Lords were the counterparts to SM Captains, they were 10 points less despite that their Chance for Glory ability was vastly superior to the Captain’s Finest Hour ability; and CSM have superior stratagems, making the Chaos Lord’s 0CP stratagem ability vastly superior to the Captain’s. As WH40K competitive players do, they figured out the synergies in 10e and that’s why we saw the “Triple Chaos Lords” list, which has been why Chaos Lords have been sold out for months! Same with Accursed Cultists, Chosen, and Forgefiends. I suspect GW deliberately under-costed them in the 10e Index to entice players to buy them, and AFTER they sold out, GW nerfed them. GW did something similar with Black Templars’ unique characters, Helbrecht and Grimaldus, in 10e. They were under-costed and sold out, and recently they were nerfed to 120 points. Now it’s Death Guard’s turn with Typhus, the Lord of Virulence, and Deathshroud Terminators’ recent points drops.
@@scolack123 It's not my theory, it's a response to someone else. Nor is it about DA or Tyranids, it's about Typhus and the crappy DG box set. Try and keep up.
I can personally confirm that Typhus is best with a group of 3 death shroud terminators. Played a game yesterday (my necrons against my friends death guard) he did a deep strike with typhus (and death shroud) in front of my monolith shot it, charged it, and nearly destroyed it (only 7 wounds left when originally a full wounds) It would've died if I hadn't used hyper-crypt stratagem (give it a 4+ invul) and a canoptek spider giving it a feel no pain of 6+
You must have rolled really bad on your saves and he must have rolled really well on his attacks. That is not the average damage output for typhus and 3 deathshroud.
I've been wondering if I should consider getting Typhus. His datasheet ability plague eater does make him look really tempting and can be run with Poxwalkers if I want a cheaper Bodyguard option so I can put points into other things.
I feel like the Death Gaurd are akin to the Yellow Lanters. Its split between Typhus who is the yellow lantern corp. And Mortarian is Sinestro with the Sinestro Corp.
I personally run them with a 6 man blob of Deathshroud for the sole fact of how much they hurt and how hard they are to completely wipe. My friend plays knights and it took him 3 whole turns to just kill the termies.
I’m actually pretty surprised people don’t like the look of the new model, I don’t play death guard but I have loved seeing this model hit the table. He looks cool af.
I’ve been running him all 10th with 20 poxwalkers, might not be 5e most “meta” choice but it sure is fun just watching my opponents get bogged down in pox walkers and mortals
I'm personally preferring the Death Guard Sorcerer in Terminator Armour to lead my Deathshroud; 70pts with a strong psychic attack and some great abilities too. Dropping him in with a unit of 3 Deathshroud is very effective at chewing through high toughness infantry. The -1 to hit from Typhus is tempting, but their toughness is solid without this
Lore wise can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get a Redeemed Mortarion with a new army called "The Redeemed" or some shit. Venerate Typhus to Arch Demon of the Death Guard and GOGOGOGOGOGOG. Typhus is just evil as fuck, this would be a fun little thing they cvould do on the table top as well, it would be so neat.
This won't happen: this will enrage more fans then please. By the way he can't redeem: Nurgle will permanently kill him if he decides to disobey. He also hates Emperor so much, didn't hesitate to betray him during Heresy.
@@WookieRookie Someone doesn't read the books. Nurgle doesn't like him, he likes to use him as a toy. Currently Nurgle's whole realm is on super fire and his favorite toy (eldar goddess) may have gotten away, all thanks to Mortarion throwing a fit.....if that didn't get him killed, rebeling wouldn't either. READ THE BOOKS. And no Mortarion didn't instantly cave, he hesitated quite a bit. As a matter of fact during some battles he was actually being swayed to the emperor side, but FUCKING TYPHON ruined it. Only reason he fell to chaos was to save his sons from nurgles everything.....you've clearly never read the books.
@@ornado4773 yep, I've never read those books, maybe because I consider them as low quality fiction. But you didn't read my comment: I didn't say that Mortarion likes Nurgle or Nurgle likes Mortarion: I've just said that Mortarion hates Emperor and fans love Mortarion in his current form. Don't see a contradiction.
Never liked the new model, don’t like the pose and the clutter on him. I use the Wargames exclusive version, easily one of the best models I have, an awesome sculpt.
He is auto include because he is played like a genestealer unit at high level. A throwaway 100 point unit that teleports in and can do good mortal wounds and maybe charge a higher value target and then die. That goes against everything that deathguard is both in lore and playstyle on tabletop. Typhus and the 100 C'tan armies are the embodiment of all that is wrong with 10th edition. "oh but the rules are so much clearer". Sure they are, chess also has clear 1 page rules and prebuilt boring armies.
@@effindave6909 no, no it isn’t, there’s a difference between modifying saves and getting more ap, they’re not the same thing and to word it in such a way that makes it seem like you get both is wrong and misleading
You could always run the claws on your models as relic weapons/power weapons. Honestly you could say they are whatever you need them to be and as long as you aren't in a tournament there should be no issue
@@mizter5597 Yeah, that's what I've been doing but I think the rule is neat but with twin linked and Blood Angels they seem....almost good? And was curious the math or if others found a good use
So he's a better Grey Knight Librarian for 30 fewer points, higher toughness and added special rules. Only reason to take them is that psychic ability in the shooting phase. Seems like named characters leading armies is just the norm now as well... Narrative and 'making your own' is dead now, isn't it?
@effindave6909 I said armies, not just Terminators. There seems to be one or more named characters in basically every list now. Grey Knights auto-include Draigo in basically every list, Marneus Calgar in that Ultramarine/Vanguard Spearhead list, Angron being the linchpin of every World Eaters list, possible auto-include for Typhus here, Shadowsun in every Tau list... etc. I just feel like named characters are too integral to too many lists in this edition.
@@Skitch213 Because named characters are way too good and cheap for what they bring. Helbrecht was insane for what his cost was pre update and he's still good. Calgar is great, Typhus is stupid cheap now, etc...
@JimH. That's kind of my point though. The named characters/epic heroes have unique and powerful abilities that you'd be a fool to pass up, I'm not disputing that, but from a flavour on the table kind of view, it's incredibly boring. As a player I've always liked building up the legend of a character or model, like my Blood Angels Smash Captain from 2 editions ago. But the way named characters are now, they feel prescribed and we're very incentivised to used them and that just kills some of the narrative feel for me particularly when it's just in favour of bringing the special rule that nobody else in the army can do. Yes, it's a petty complaint... Yes, I'm aware of and okay with that. But the internet allows me to complain into the void and occasionally get a response.
This is what I don't get with how GW prices models. Less compare Typhus to Ahriman. T: 80pts A: 130/140 Abilities: T; -1 to hit in Melee, -1 Toughness within Contagion Range (also either -1 WS/BS, or -1 Sv), in shooting phase 1=D3 to self, 2-5=D6, 6=D3+3. He is going to make a Deathshroud unit (any character could FYI) -1 to Wound if the S>T. Now less look at Ahriman. +1 to Hit while leading unit, once per game does a Cabal Ritual for free. Only leads Rubrics and more specifically probably only Warpflamers. Sure our Doombolt is technically better than the "Eaters Plague" being 1=D3 to the opponent, 2-5=D3+3, 6=D3+6. But it cost 7 Cabal Points to do so. Along with all the other shenanigans it costs resources. Pound for pound Typhus is the better model. But Ahriman is "more flexible" because of TS Army rule ... Ahriman needs to drop to like 100/110
This is quite possible. It seems that GW is preparing a new patrol for DG and they want to sell as many old ones as possible. They also wanted to nerf plague marines and putrifier, so to accelerate sales they had to buff either poxwalkers or Typhus. Poxwalkers are already cheap enough, 4 pts/model is too little for T4 models with FNP. So they buffed Typhus. This also explains why named characters are so busted, you can't spam them unlike regular characters, like DG players did with putrifier, so making them OP affects armies less. Ahriman had a patrol, so GW can also cut his points to sale it.
I'll be real with you, I think something has just gone wrong when characters are cheap. Make them really good and fun, but expensive, that's when they're at their best imo.
He hasn't sucked during this edition at all (outside of pre update DG) he has always been good here. Nothing has changed about him, at 100pts he was still good. He can deep strike, do an action and still use his psychic ability to "shoot" stuff, which also bypasses shit like like operative and has the power to one shot a character with almost no counterplay
