A phenomenon I've witnessed in older people is that they love to pace their messages with a "..." e.g. "Going to the store... do you want something?" And my brain immediately reads it as reluctancy or being sad, but I don't think there's any of that, it's just their way of working around periods sounding too severe.
@nihzit8185
@nihzit8185 2 года назад
I do that a lot to convey a softer ending or a short break like "that sounds... interesting?" or just "..." if i write that on its own it means "if you piss me off once more i'm gonna find you wherever you are and rip off your head!"

Well, I'm 47 years old and I type like that... I tend to use the "period" a lot... And I oftentimes don't punctuate using commas and such... For example: "so... What is on the agenda for today... If I may ask"... Don't know why I type that way, I just started doing it unconsciously... Perhaps it's because I just don't want to have to switch keyboards and find the proper punctuation mark on that keyboard... Especially on a phone screen like I'm using now?

Well, we don't constantly receive tens and hundreds of emails all about various topics, and thus the teacher does not have time to compose a full length formal letter back. The least they can do is acknowledge your inquiry without sounding condescending. Perhaps if you put yourselves in their shoes, you may understand what it is like to hold responsibility.

honestly one of my favourite things to have come out of internet typing is probably the tone tag. there are loads of them, and while they were origionaly for neurodivergent people, i really like them. for those who dont know, they are a letter or a few letters put at the end of a message after a "/" to convey tone clearly, eg /j = joking, /lh = lighthearted, /g or /gen = genuine, ect. you can find lists online and as long as they are never misused or intentionally wrong, i find them super helpful to make sure that you and the person youre talking to are both seeing each others reactions well :)

I typically use what I understand to be proper English when I type (or just talk to someone), using word choice to attempt to convey tone and always punctuating sentences, defaulting to a period if I don’t want to convey any specific tone with said punctuation. It’s just how I learned to write and I don’t perceive Internet chatting or commenting as any different from any other writing.

I remember when people thought abbreviated text language was going to change English completely, then predictive text came along and wiped it out entirely.

To be fair, there have been worse predictions. I used to suspect the impending advent of a language of all emotes/emojis. Nothin wrong with, well, being wrong.

@@michaelcherokee8906 Emojis are a good substitute to body language which is otherwise non existent in pure text dialogue.

If texting could ruin language, the telegraph would've already done that 150 years ago

@@michaelcherokee8906 there are several actually: emojilang, emoji*code* for programming, an adaptation of the minimalist language `toki pona` (which has like 125 words so it's really easy to make a writing system for), iConji is a similar idea but if we're counting that then blissymbols too,

Worst part is when they type in all caps non stop, even when the tone of the comment is entirely passive. It just comes off as childish and needing attention.

On periods: My dad and my aunt always sound ice cold through text. Because they use full stops. "Ok." "Fun." "I'm really excited." Ouch.
