Why Ukraine Wants More Javelin Missiles

The Javelin weapon system has become synonymous with Ukrainian resistance against Russia. But making these high tech weapons isn't easy. Can the U.S. keep supplying Javelins to Ukraine while maintaining its own stockpile of these modern anti-armor weapons?
Ukraine's defense against Russia is being supported by billions of dollars in military aid from NATO countries. One of the most capable and expensive weapon systems supplied is the FGM-148 Javelin, a U.S.-made anti-armor weapon that costs about $176,000 each.
"We don't know where and when the next kinetic war will be, and producing new weapons surging production lines takes time," said Cynthia Cook, a Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "This may be a time where we might want to think about how we invest in increasing the inventory of precision-guided weapons and other weapons and missiles."
Although the Javelin has been lauded by the Ukrainian government, the actual effectiveness of the weapon system remains hard to independently verify outside of anecdotal accounts from the battlefield.
"We don't have folks on the ground, and I think that is a policy decision that we should reconsider," said U.S. Rep. Mark Waltz, R-Fla., a former U.S. Army Green Beret. "We could help them be actually more effective if we had advisors alongside, but we'd have to do that in very small numbers very selectively, and very quietly."
Watch the video above to find out what the Javelin is, how is its used and what it will take for the U.S. to produce more of them.

From a historical perspective I just want to point out that the modern Javelin correctly replaces the ancient Roman version. It's an infantry missile weapon that can take out cavalry. This probably obvious to many, but it deserves a statement.

We stare at Putin, but as with everything, there are two sides to the coin. If we look at NATO firmly hitting the hammer that would respect the international treaty and that it would not accept RUSSIA's satellite countries in any way, we would probably not be going through such difficult times and on the verge of an atomic war.

Once they have the reusable launch unit, the Javelin missiles are 80,000 each. It's still not cheap, but you can't put a price tag on a soldiers life. The Javelin allows them to shoot from a safe distance of 2.5 miles / 4 kilometers. You can get a cheaper missile with less range, such as the NLAW, but their days will be numbered if they shoot at a column of tanks from 400 meters.
@williamzk9083
@williamzk9083 2 года назад
No doubt Javelin was the key weapon but 50-400 meters is a good range if you have Forrest to retreat into plus NLAW works better in urban fighting. The beauty of NLAW is that it is cheaper and easier to make and that might mean the different between having a weapon or having none and unlike previous bazooka or RPG weapons that claimed 300m range NLAW truly is accurate at that range and truly destroys the target at that range. If you saw that Ukrainian ambush they used an NLAW to hit the second buddy tank and likely an RPG to hit the BMP. The Russians respond by driving their BMP vehicles into the ditch near the field to get cover. Their soldiers dismount the BMPs and I counted 8 bodies on the road. The tanks start firing into the Ukrainian position but seem to fire high and miss. I hope the Ukrainians got away.

the Javelin might not be cheap for a Missile, but it's sure is much cheaper than the tanks and especially command and control or anti air vehicles, which are suprisingly very expensive for Russian standarts. BUK units are about 20 million$ per unit, even more expensive than U.S equivalent anti air systems. this Russian integration of pretty much every system imaginable into it's armored battalions is costing them way more than a Javelin or an NLAW ever would be. it's amazing just how much those force multipliers are punching above their weight.

Russian economy stabilises US/EU economy faces massive contraction. Just 2 months into the war, the roubles appreciated higher than it was 2 years ago, inflation in Russia is checked and food supplies are okay. The same can't be said of Europe/US, their economy is battling challenges and it'll likely be worse in autumn/winter when demand for energy climb and prices go up further. At this moment, Putin is winning, the collective West is losing even as they struggle to put up an integrated front. Russian economy now is less dependent on imports on products and financial influence from Europe and this is key reason on why sanctions don't work but the West still doesn't get it. Russia has more than enough raw materials to manufacture and exports raw materials in the form of energy and other materials to the rest of the world so other countries can use them for their manufacturing industries. This why the EU don't want to embargo oil or gas from Russia, and why the US begs Venezuela for oil, wheat, etc.

Not a problem Nato countries is already asking sweden to please produce more NLAW and they already started. Which is much cheaper. Usa is now in Sweden and will probebly buy Archer from Sweden, the fastest artillery in the world and probebly a lot of Excalibur guided artillery rounds with it. To bad they can't buy some excellent swedish fighter jets at a bargin price as well.

Once you got a lock-on with the javelin and the object is standing in the open it’s pretty much guaranteed to blow, the impact of the actual projectile is hypersonic so it will go through tanks and all other armored vehicles like butter. The Javelin is a very decent weapon but really could use some updates and is expensive for what it is. Its honestly really over priced considering the Nlaw is 1/5 the price and takes less training time. Sadly it shows the state of the US defence industry right now you get less for more. I think if the US budget had less corruption and so was not over paying its real spending would like more like 250bil per year in real terms.

@alistairbolden6340
@alistairbolden6340 Год назад
@@PlannedObsolescence Yeah its a common issue caused by the indoctrination of Americans from a young age. Far to few Americans are capable of viewing things for what they are and instead overestimate anything associated with the USA. For example most of the US Navy was made in the 1970s and has not been properly updated for 50+ years, yet its in the general conscious that America has a ''state of the art Navy''.Another simple missoma is Americans often think that while they do pay more for it their healthcare their system is the best in the world, you only have to look at the life expectancy of the adverage American to see this is also completely faulse. TLDR Americans are brainwashed into thinking many things that are simply not based in reality, and as such often find themselves being corrected.
@alistairbolden6340
@alistairbolden6340 Год назад
@@PlannedObsolescence As an American I'm afraid you really should fact check yourself on almost anything you think as there is a very good chance your education prioritized the perception you have of your own nation over fact. Anyone who has ever met an American from any other nation can tell right away how manipulative and coercive (via fear) the American education system is. For comparison its extreamly comparable to how the Chinese were under Mao. You will see Many non Americans simply think Americans are stupid or suffer from very poor education but this is not the case what all, the American education system is very good at what its trying to achieve. That is a Docile population that will put up with some of the worst human rights and working standards in the known world.

The Javelin is too expensive to use exclusively ... the Javelin is more effective deployed as the initial weapon system to create a battlefield condition where more affordable lower tech weapons system can be used... The challenge is that weapon supply chain for Javelin won't keep up with battlefield demand when Putin is using overwhelming force... It is not just a war of weapons but of logistics and economics.
@samuelweir5985
@samuelweir5985 2 года назад
The Javelin wins the war of economics against Russian tanks. We're comparing the $200K cost of a Javelin versus a Russian tank that cost millions to produce. Sure, there are cheaper NLAW anti-tank weapons (which have shorter ranges), but either way Russia loses the battle of economics big time every time one of its tanks is destroyed by either a Javelin or an NLAW (to say nothing of the lives of the Russian crew inside of the tank as well as the cost of training them).
