Hey, Steve here. In this video, I look at compressor pedals: Why use a compressor? What are compressor pedals useful for? How to use a compressor? I tackle these question by looking at the typical features we see of compressor pedals, and by showing you some examples of how they typically work. Hope you find it useful! For this video I used a Boss CS-3 Compressor.

I wish people would review compressor pedals the way you have demonstrated this pedal. They pick the same blues riffs that benefit none-so-ever from compression with other effects running simultaneously. Now I know this pedal is a solid choice but unfortunately, I'm still lost in the abyss when it comes to gauging the quality of other comp pedals.

Hey Henery. Thanks for your kind words. I recently bought the warden compressor from Earthquaker devices. It costs twice as much as the boss but it is much better. The sp compressor by exotic is a but cheaper and is also a solid choice.

Would love to know what you think. Love using compressors myself, but i learned that Nick Reinhardt of Tera Melos didn't even know why he needed a compressor, let alone used one, until 2013ish. His reaction was extremely positive, was stoked on compressors. But I feel like all this begs the question, does using a compressor make us practice less efficient playing? Nick said he was originally offended when a fan gave a compressor to him at a show, because he felt he had practiced his parts so hard and didn't understand why he needed one, and it's true, Nick has had very smooth tapping live and recorded. When he got home he put it in his gear stache or sold it, never plugged it in. Obviously compressor is superior to no compressor, but I wonder if it would help the part of our tone that comes from our fingers to practice compressorless first and THEN put the compressor on? Or would it be counted intuitive since you're not "playing to the pedal"? Dunno man, never tried, just a bit stoned and a thought struck me. Learned this from a vid he did on pedalsandeffects and a small tidbit on his compressor vid with Robert Keeley

I just bought the Warden after watching that CHON video. I’m so excited for my pedal to get here in the mail, thank you for this! A lot of demos of compression are blues players. Thanks for the great video and explanation of compression featuring the CS-3! I have one myself and I have wondered a lot how to use it. I did pay attention to how it removed the quality of the dynamic when I activated, but I also really love to play soft parts with fingerpicking and sometimes the notes doesn't get quite strong, but now I see what other use this pedal has. I have a better idea now of when to use it and when not to.

Great video, man. Really appreciate you continuing to extend this series. There's always a lot of great information which, at least for me, has helped me grow creatively. I literally just got the EQD The Warden comp on Thursday and it sounds amazing, it not only does compression very well with a lot of flexibility, but it also adds a little bit of sparkle that sounds nice. Those guys at Earthquaker know what they're doing! (I'm in no way affiliated with EQD). It uses optical technology vs FET internally. Any experience with both? Any comparisons you could make or any explanations as to why one might go with one over the other?

Good question. I haven't much experience of playing semi-hollow guitars. Anyone who has have any advice? I personally play a semi-hollow PRS custom 22 SE and I think it sounds amazing. It's super warm and sustains for days. I have no problem when it comes to tapping riffs(even without the compressor). I actually want to get a full hollow body PRS. If you're thinking about getting one, you should. I'd recommend the PRS, they seem to really put out a great guitar consistently. I'm kind of a fan boy.

@azngoku666
@azngoku666 7 лет назад
Good point about smoothing out the lowest string (especially if you're tapping on them) I've been working on 2 handed tapping stuff, trying to play without any effects...do you think there's a danger of not developing good left/right hand independence if I started using a compressor for this? (e.g. masking the fact that some fingers or an entire hand always put out quieter notes)
@LetsTalkAboutMathRock
@LetsTalkAboutMathRock 7 лет назад
+yeastiality i think that left hand tapping will pretty much be weaker than right hand tapping, due to the angles etc. However, i'd still work on making your left hand tapping stronger and see if you can do it that way. If your hands are unbalanced (like mine at the monent) then a compressor can help balance the volumes. I'll be trying the more natural way and see if I can get it all balanced without one. It will take a while though but probably worth it in the end. These are my thoughts at the moment. Compressor pedals have other uses too, I didn't mention any of them in the video though.

I recently got a boss cs-3 and returned it after a few days of fiddling with it. It's very noisy. To the point that it's unusable. When you push the level and sustain you will get a terrible humming sound..no way to avoid this. I personally got it for tapping and yes, compressors do make a world of difference when you're tapping, especially in the "math rock" style. Although, the tone is pretty good. It's just the noise that's made it unusable for me.
