I'm here a little bit more information on the insect and sleep thing I'm going to start with the insect thing first the reason why it doesn't attract as much bugs and even some types of animals is because certain species of insect and mammal can't see red wavelengths of light this is also true for several 100 species of fish the sleep thing is because our son doesn't really put out "that much" light that's in the red wavelength so our brain doesn't really care about that instead of cares more about the much more common wavelengths of light that our sun produces mostly UV so that when our eyes tell our brain that there are these types of light in our environment the brain goes "oh it's daytime I got to stay awake" at least that's my understanding of it
I used to like the green light on my Petzl but now i defer by my Olight headlight's red. I also close one eye when i use a white light for a short spell so i can still see when i go back to no light
Marins use red or green light because u actually see better and whight light is more distracting than red or Green and it might sound weird but red and Green don’t mess with ur emissions that much so that’s why thay use Green or red
Correct! You are right that blue light suppresses melatonin. The LEDs used in headlamps generally contain 1 RED, 1 GREEN, 1 BLUE light emitting diode (LED). To make “white” light, they are all turned on to the same intensity, which creates white. So, there is a 33.333% blue light component to “white” light, as made by LED headlamps or flashlights.
Tell this to the headlight company's. They are destroying the night sky. I went to a dark sky last night and kept getting my view of the stars RUINED because of car headlights.
Great comment! Green light provides better long distance vision at night, but it does break down rhodopsin faster than red light does. So, red light is better for sleep and night vision, but green is a good compromise if you want some extended range/acuity. Thanks!
Did you know that under the right circumstances a candal light can be seen from a mile away, soldiers use red lights during recon missions to for more stealth, so if you're looking for more stealth switch over to your red light however if your head lamp or flash light doesn't have this feature don't fear, you can use a layer or two of painting\ masking tape to dampen your light.
I’m going to get my husband a set of those with the red lights because he is ALWAYS blinding me every time he wears his headband light, it really does hurt my blue eyes and gives me an instant headache. People who are constantly looking at their IPAD should always wear glasses with blue blocker that protects your eyes.
I don’t recommend using red light if someone is actively trying to sleep tho since it is the color our brains associate with fear and anxiety and you can give them a nightmare or worst case scenario an anxiety attack
My favorite so far is the Wendung made by Swissgear. It’s very light and very bright. The one in the video is made by Victoper and is also a good budget headlamp.
The night vision part isn't really accurate because we need more red light to get the same visibility as white light. There isn't any difference in night vision loss between using red light and using sublumen white light.
True only if the expectation is to achieve the same brightness level. The proposition I made in this video is that a very bright light may not be needed for most tasks around camp or walking on a trail. If you substitute a red light (weaker in intensity) for the very bright white light more commonly used, you will indeed have improved night vision.
I would think that a red flashlight would look similar to red night-vision goggles and didn't soldiers in Vietnam hallucinate because of said red NVGs?
