Why Vader STOPPED Luke From Killing Palpatine (NOT WHY YOU THINK) 

Makes total sense that Vader stopped Luke because he felt this was not the right time to kill Palpatine. Attempting to kill Palpatine when he is expecting it, even urging it on, is a bad move, & Vader knew this. To guarantee victory for himself & his son he had to stop Luke in that moment. Also, by "protecting" Palpatine in that moment, just as the Emperor even expected Vader to do, Vader was playing along, still pretending to be the obedient servant. As Sith Lords they not only expect that they will turn on each other eventually, they even plan for it behind each other's backs. It's the Rule of Two. Vader stopped Luke from doing anything too soon here & hide the plan for them to take over the galaxy, which Palpatine obviously was expecting Vader to be planning anyway. In that sense he actually WAS protecting Luke, but not in the obvious way. Vader was most of all protecting the plan to kill Palpatine & take over the galaxy with Luke + turning Luke to the Dark Side. But blocking Luke's blade was also a guarantee to make sure that Palpatine didn't harm his son in any way. Better that Luke duels with him so he can control the situation rather than Palpatine would step in (which he does later as we all know). What also makes this make sense is simply the fact why it took so long for Vader/Anakin to finally make the decision to save Luke's life & step in. Anakin's turn back to the Light was already happening, but very slowly & discretely. So discretely that he wasn't really sure himself it was happening. Luke sensed it, Anakin himself couldn't, or he refused to accept what was happening to him. If Anakin's redemption had emerged more & earlier I can't believe he had waited or hesitated as long as he did, watching Luke suffer for so long, before he decided to finally do the right thing out of love for someone else but himself. If he had blocked Luke's attack on Palpatine strictly out of love for Luke, to protect him, I can't imagine he had waited that long to save him during the Force Lightning. I am not at all ruling out that protecting Luke was part of the reason why he blocked Luke's saber from killing Palpatine but it's far from the only & the strongest reason why.

Attention should be paid to the fact that he contemplated the reason for protecting the Emperor *after* doing so. It feels more instinctive and automatic if you put it that way, Vader doesn't know why he prevents Luke from killing Palpatine and tries to make it make sense in his head, of course from the dark lord's point of view. It also kinda helps the "he was still a slave" argument, it shows that Vader in the end is Palpatine's servant and will protect him from any threats except himself.

I highly doubt that Luke was capable of killing Sidious even if Vader hadn't interfered.

That was actually EXACTLY why I thought Vader did it. Clearly he wanted Palpatine out of the way, but Luke was going to kill him to save his friends, not seize Palpatine's power.

I’ve heard other answers that, while similar to this one, went more along the lines of Vader blocking the blow to Sidious because he knew Sidious was just goading Luke on and that he was a trickster. Vader knew that Sidious knew that either he was going to block the blade for him, or that Sidious would’ve just shocked Luke and done something right there to prevent his own death. He’s a trickster after and only puts himself in weaker situations only when he KNOWS his cards have been played right, just like the time when he was boutta be struck down by Windu before Anakin supposedly saves him.

Vader was protecting his master and his position. Anakin was protecting luke from the darkside

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS

This is incomplete. Vader didn't consider after all he'd experienced with Palpatine, through years of abuse and punishment, how Palpatine would just allow Vader and Luke to simple take over. There was no way Palpatine would allow a two on one and if Vader sensed Luke was strong, so to would Palpatine. Vader didn't think this through very well and wasn't thinking clearly. We don't see this stage through the eyes of Palpatine which is disappointing. He knew he didn't want a father and son combo and he only tacitly accepted the rule of two. Would he have trained Luke as an apprentice, if he intended to live forever? Did he still need a Sith enforcer like Vader? Doubt it. If Luke had lost, would he be placed on ice and his body cloned? Would Vader want this desecration of his son, the last vestige of his and Padme's love to be experimented on?

No way Sidious didn't know what Luke was going to do, no way he couldn't avoid/deflect/block it.

Isn't that all obvious? I've always thought Palps wanted to Luke to kill Vader and replace him as his apprentice, Vader wanted Luke to turn to the dark side and kill Palps and Luke wanted to kill Palps and redeem his father. I'm surprised at this video's title.....

The attempt to kill the emperor could have been Luke Skywalker trying to finish what Mace Windu and the Jedi intended to do in the past. Luke's attempts to kill the emperor were for the just reasons, Windu said, " I am going to end this once and for all. He has control of the senate and the courts, he's to dangerous to be left alive". I beg to say, Luke was not giving into the darkside but was trying to fulfill the Jedi mission, "once and for all".

Vader’s “right hand” 😅

Darth Anakin (by then he was already reverting and we can argue he was never truly Vader since all of his motives were Anakin's) knew that was a suicide mission. Despite Palpatine's premonitions of Luke defeating him that was a fully developed Grand Master Luke type of force wielder, not the talented padawan before him at that moment.

Because anybody who kills Palpatine when he wants it will be possessed by Palpatine's Sith Spirit. I don't buy any other theory

Vader wasn't certain he and Luke could defeat the Emporer. He knew Palpatine wasn't defenseless. If he hadn't deflected the attack, the Emporer might've destroyed both of them.

I think it is unfair of me to say this sounds silly, but does it? At this point Darth Vader is also still smart, and he knows both the stakes, and the players. Let's say he saves the Emperor, but then what? If one of them doesn't die that day, then Luke and Vader will still be permanently separated. Vader MUST know that, ideally, Sidious wants to retire him, and upgrade to the new Skywalker model; a young, powerful Force-user who hasn't been ravages by fire, and who has been trained by the Jedi, but also shown their hypocrisy, making his allegiance to them at least less. Once Luke is even close, the Emperor could easily merc Vader, and use that pain to further shape Luke, so I can't see why Vader envisions a tomorrow where all three are alive, but he still has access to Luke, to shape him into a more useful tool? If Palpatine doesn't just outright kill Vader, then he still just sends him off on pointless enforcer missions, while he focuses on training Luke, and using threats against Vader to steer him. There isn't a verse where the Emperor let's them both live, and collaborate, and grow into the next big threat against him. If he could have found his son in secret, and trained him like he trained Galen Marek, then MAYBE, assuming that they could didge spies, and Palpatine's own precognition, but once they were all in the DS throne room, that was a Thunder Dome; one of them had to leave in a bag. I can see why Vader didn't want Luke to waste Palpatine then, but not how he planned for them to both survive, and train up to challenge the Emperor, at a later date; the Sith Master simply wouldn't have permitted it, either by killing Vader there, and using that to enrage the boy, or by separating them, and training Luke himself, while keeping Vader permanently housed elsewhere, now that he was, for the most part, unnecessary.

Everyone has they own points of view about Vader with Luke. Some may disagree or agree. But at The end is The same. Vader save Luke. Vader kill The Emperor.

Why didn't the emperor do anything to block the lightsaber? Why was he so sure Vader would block it? That's what I don't understand.
