I think Mathieu has the most to lose and that can make the difference. I want to see Belgium 🇧🇪 cycling great again ! We're about to watch Rocky 4 where Sly fights the Russian . Outa respect im gunna attempt to ride 10,000 feet of elevation in 5 hours over 160.1k on Sunday.
Guys, the chemistry here slays me. Genuinely warm, witty and friendly banter. No rabidly held opinions just knowledgeable people chewing the fat. The best cycling magazine show by far! Top Gear for cycling but without the dubious jokes and (occasional) meaness
Got knocked off my bike whilst riding along my local high street by a woman who was parked and didnt adopt the "dutch reach" before opening her door. Broken bike and wrist but fortunately insured via British Cycling who after some time recovered my costs including compensation for a holiday I could enjoy due to the broken wrist. Keep up the good work guys
O please do your insurance ads like the Allstate Mayhem ones. "You're inside the cafe, having a coffee and talking about aero, boring. And I'm your trusty rusty Raleigh 10-speed just looking for a little more action. Look, over here, pick me, pick me! Here we go, this bloke looks like a barrel of fun. Just drive me like an old MG, hey, we're about to hit that lorry!" 😀
The Dettol worked a treat 👌 I can confirm the bike is still sparkly clean and in one piece... I now haven't got anything to clean The bathroom with though... Might try some muc off on the kazi.
On the insurance topic: Bought a canondale synapse for £1800 in 2019. Second ride on it was the manchester to blackpool night ride.. Got hit from behind by a taxi at 3am, just after finishing. 2 broken ribs, torn quad, torn calf, torn knee ligaments, torn ankle ligaments, and the bike was destroyed... it was a 3 day old bike... Bike insurance covered replacing the bike, and the insurance company sued the taxi driver/company on my behalf for the physical injuries too. Still with that same insurance company now, even though there are cheaper companies out there. Well worth it. Hopefully ill never need it again, but id rather have it than not have it.
Bought a Canyon Endurace in 2018. Second ride on it, I crashed, solo. My bike was barely scratched, but at the time I did not wear a helmet. I spent the next two weeks in the coma (doctors telling my family that I would probably never wake up, or at best would finish my life in a wheelchair).
Fitting a sleeve over the threaded portion of the fork is a dangerous modification. Threaded portion of the steerer tube was never designed for this. Traditional quill stem ensures force applied is inside and below the threaded portion.
It really depends how much Pogaçar is marked out during the race. Van der Poel has mugged him at Milan San Remo and other races so don’t rule him out. If the climbing favourites really hammer each of the longer climbs they might be able to crack him. I still don’t think it’s just a two horse race, but if Pogaçar does get it, Strade Bianche, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Giro, the Tour and the worlds road race in one season is quite some palmarès…
MSR isn't comparable at all to this year's Worlds. MSR only has 2000m elevation gain and "climbs" at the end are mostly under 4%. In terms of vertical meters the more suitable comparison would be 2023 Lombardia which had 4.600 vertical meters, or 2024 LBL which had 4.200 vertical meters. Both of those Pogačar won with a 30km solo. That's why Dan presented that graph as his argument. It's the cumulative vertical meters, length of the race and climbs that are in favour of Pogačar, and Slovenia can play the Roglič card. Remco has a better chance than MVDP, or they can work together against Pog & Rog.
@@ogradar85 Remco is second favourite in the bookies market which I think is fair. Pog oustanding favourite at 1.64, Evenepoel 6.8 and MVDP third at 9.8.
On August 9, a car knocked me off my 8 months old Pinarello F7. As I didn’t want to leave my bike at the roadside, I did not go directly to the hospital, but went to get X-rays the next day. The broken Pubic bone, broken rib and several pulled muscles are still healing, but I’m still waiting for the car’s insurance company to pay for the damage to my bike (totaled!). My bicycle is covered by my car insurance and they did pay me some money. They also pay for a lawyer who is now doing the negotiations with car’s insurance company to get compensation for my bike, for the suffering and for the time not being able to ride. Once I’ll be riding again, I’ll make sure my bike is somehow picked up after an accident, so I can go straight to the hospital if needed. Both my car and motorcycle insurance included a pick up service, so I guess that should also be an option for bicycles.
The stem on the threaded steerer is a dodgy BODGE. The threading wasn't designed to be clamped and leveraged externally. It creates weaker spots which could give way. A quill stem is meant to expand well below the threading.
Mathieu is in there. Everybody will laugh, but if he has a great day he can perform like crazy. Yes indeed guy's, I also still remember Van der Poel winning that Amstel Gold race, from a totally lost position catching everyone and winning.
I had a spare fiver that I was going to drop as a super-thanks on this video. However, after watching the show, I've just put on Pogacar to win. Thanks for the tip Dan.
I don’t really see how anyone can be priced out of cycling when you have these community bike projects / charities. I think the real issue is lack of safe infrastructure. It feels like people are basically using price as an excuse when asked why they don’t cycle; because they maybe don’t want to admit that they’re mostly just afraid. That’s not to say they wouldn’t be justified in feeling that way. I feel more scared now than I used to because of the bigger cars, distracted / angry drivers you see everywhere. In terms of the cycle to work scheme, I think it should be abolished, and the government simply get rid of VAT from bikes and accessories. Plus maybe an additional subsidy for certain types of bikes to make sure the discount is as big as it can be under cycle to work.
I agree but notice the study was on people of no income. If you have no income, it does tend to reduce your purchasing power. Not sure what they want the UK government to do
@@jerryyoung6494 I thought the study was on lower income people not being able to benefit from the tax deduction of the cycle to work scheme because they don’t earn enough to get the full savings. I wrote half my original comment before I had heard the whole story. But you still seem to have misunderstood the study.
From people who went to see the circuit, apparently it is not that hard. And besides MVDP chances to win, I also wonder about Mads Pedersen who seems in good form.
The first point that is overlooked is that there is no 5 min climb. The second climb is 1k at 8% the rest of the climb is a false flat at 3%. There are also a few climbs of a few hundred meters. The course is much more suitable for VDP than you would think at first glance. Moreover, I have never seen VDP climb as well as in the Tour of Luxembourg where he was actually the strongest and on a course that is actually just as tough as the World Cup, and Ayuso and Hirschi simply rode out of his wheel on the last hill. But anyway Pog is exceptionally good on almost every parcours that I still consider him as the favorite, but VDP is much closer than some think. So, more with Si, I guess.
@@profchaos9001 I Agree with you. In Luxembourg he was the only one who could stay close to VDP on that last hill. And the course is much more suited to punchers and classic riders than first thought.
I got myself a second hand expensive premium carbon bike. Was pumping up the tires and the wheels exploded and damaged the frame. Apparently the wrong valve was used. The manufacturer offered the replacement wheel and frame like a crash replacement. My home insurance covered the cost minus the deductible. So I have a brand new frame in a new colour and a new wheel. Success!
@@dcrxz8717 "OMG, someone on RU-vid wrote the same thing as someone on Reddit. He must have stolen it." 😱 I don't even use reddit, "friend". But I'm happy to hear that someone else has the same humour as me. But with 8 billion people in the world it's not so surprising that some think the same thing when seeing a photo.
Regarding the quill stem adapter and Dan's question about structural integrity of materials when pressure is applied from the outside (clamping) vs. the inside: Carbon fiber has very high tensile strength, and works great as material for building pressure vessels. It does not work well when subjected to pressure from outside however, as demonstrated by the OceanGate Titan submersible, which was constructed from a carbon fiber composite and imploded in June 2023 while diving towards the Titanic wreck site.
MVDP only has a chance if Remco and Pogi cancel eachother out. A bit like how Remco won the Olympics because Wout cancelled out MVDP, not because he was the strongest. But Remco and Pogi are just not that kind of guys, so they will probably just work together and then Pogi wins.
Just bought a new carbon gravel bike, terrified of it getting damaged or even stolen ( not that it will ever leave my hands out on a ride) looked around for insurance, tried to use a very well known bike insurer who's website payment system kept crashing, saw a mention of GCN insurance in one of Simon's videos now the new bike is insured via GCN with the added bonus of some third party insurance included ( simples) er oh, no meercats used.
Threadless stem on threaded steerer = absolute bodge. The quill expander presses out at the thicker unthreaded portion of the setter - the threaded portion is thinner and replete with stress risers - beyond bodge - this is dangerous
Caption contest: 🎵Remco represents the lollipop gilded, the lollipop gilded, the lollipop gilded, Remco represents the lollipop gilded, now off he goes to Fraaaaance🎵
Having recently brought bike insurance, i was not aware you needed a specific lock. Something that should be highlighted in the process. Overall I feel at ease now my bike is covered, as there is a lot of bike theft in my area.
It's a good idea to read all the requirements to ensure you're doing everything the insurer asks to be covered. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
If you 're concerned about the threaded sleeve on the outside of a quill steerer to accommodate a threadless stem, you could always use a carbon-style plug instead of a 1" star nut. That way the steerer is supported internally to offset the compression forces of the stem. I say a hack, and a good one.
In 2021 I was hit at 90° by a car while cycling past a gas station in a dedicated bike lane. I got away with whiplash, concussion and bone bruising to the femur, but my bike and helmet were obliterated. The wonderful people from Beeline Oxford were able to salvage the bike frame and handlebars, and insurance covered new wheels, front and rear derailleurs, chain, cranks and fork. Sadly my insurance didn't cover my helmet - lesson learned! The helmet probably saved my life, so WEAR A HELMET and get it insured if possible 😊
on my way home while bike commuting I pass by a dark street with trees on bothsides and there are a lot of bats flying. There were times where while passing, bats would swoop centimetres away from my helmet.
10:06 - Don't think we wouldn't notice. You 'typed' Tadej. You *pasted* Pogacar. Because finding the accent above the C in his surname was going to be a pain in butt for the video :D But I make you right...Surely it'll be between Tadej and Mattieu for the win. I would love to see MvdP win (I'm a MASSIVE Fan, like Si), but Tadej Pogacar has the power, the climbing ability and the race smarts... The ultimate winner - I hope - will be us viewers! I'll be watching from the Turbo trainer!
In Canada I have my bike insured through my house insurance which essentially only covers theft and damage when stored. I'd want insurance that covers damage while using the bike and/or when the bike is away from home.
I struggle to see a world in which MvdP wins on Sunday. Pogacar and Evenepoel are much better on a course like this. I see the possibility of a medal a few minutes behind those two though
The stem adaptation is good. I did it when A-head stems came out but just bolted the stem onto the threads. It failed exactly never and I even raced it. It’s a Giant Cadex I reckon.
I like Van Der Poels chances to get the rainbows...and that photo of him climbing in the Strade Bianche is incredible. One of my favorite videos on youtube is of him trying to teach Average Rob and his brother Arno to MTB with a flat tire! LOL. Worth a watch if you want a good laugh.
There are no bike insurances available here in Finland, it's tied to property insurance. Each year there's a drop of 10 % insurance value to the maximum of seven years aka 70 %. So I've had two commuter bikes stolen just as they've turned seven years old, perfectly maintained and with replacement parts installed, and I've had like 150 € coverage from each bike after deductibles. Good stuff./s
There are a few companies that have specialised in bike insurance in the last years and they offer bike insurance as a standalone product, not part of household insurance. I'm sure some of them are also available in Finland, but you would rather have to buy it directly from them online, not through an insurance broker. While it is possible to keep the sum insured on a fixed level at the beginning, I think it will normally not last longer than 3 years. Although it depends on specific product, they do differ a lot.
I’m fortunate that I’ve not yet experienced an incident that would have caused me to need bike insurance, but I can see the value. A number of years ago, I started to dabble in road racing, and it seemed like there was always an expensive-sounding crash or two in every event. It actually put me off of racing - I didn’t figure I could afford to replace a ruined bike (to say nothing of personal injury), so I gave up racing. Perhaps bike insurance would have kept me in the peloton…nah, I’d have been blown out the back.
Worst time with bike insurance. Had a bike-specific policy with a well-known brand which covered "loss or theft of bike while on holiday, including replacement rental costs". Bike went missing on the flight on the way my stag do in Nice. Called up insurer only to find bike had to be missing for 21 days before said policy kicked in. Fortunately the stag-do was saved by a friend who loaned me a bike. Best time with bike insurance (different company). In the course of 6 months worte off 2 brand new Canyon Aeroads (one crashed in a race, another hit by a car). Both times was provided with a bank transfer quickly for the full value of the bike, and (once physically able) was able to get riding again.
The problem for Van der Poel is that he could survive the long climb in a bigger group, but he won't be able to respond to Tadej attacking full gas 50 meters in front of him.
About the insurance. 12 years ago I had an accident, a guy hit me with his car and my bike was wrecked. Fortunately, It wasnt as serius as it could have been. I didn´t have a bike insurance. However, my house insurance took care of all the bureaucracy. They told me many house insurances cover your bike and your pets. The car insurance paid for a new bike and the recovery time I couldnt go to work. So, it was a happy ending even though i hadn´t a proper bike insurance.
I'm the same as JimSte, car nut with allthe the cliche's. The catalyst for me giving cycling ago was the ride to work scheme, and wanting to avoid the Northern line at 8am.
On using the threaded fork as a threadless, it's definitely a bodge -- and a dangerous one. Imagine taking a pipe cutter to a threadless steerer tube and scoring around the diameter of it right where it meets the top. That's actually how plumbers cut tubing (although they go all the way through). The threads are doing the same thing to this stem. When a quill is used, the quill applies the force to the tube down where there are no threads.
The problem he has is that no one will work with him if Pogocar takes a flyer.. so he has no choice but to follow then attack him. The repetitive nature of the climbs work to MVDP’s favor mentally. If he is there with 2 climbs left it’s as good as done.
I really hope Tadej wins by the biggest margin in history and makes it look like he wasn’t even trying… love too see Pogi completely dominate every race he enters.
At this point, I am 40:60 on MvDP and Pogi, but the real, REAL thing I would like to see is "Dan's Spreadsheet of Doom" and the calculations that led to his conclusion (I am admittedly a numbers geek myself so very very curious about the same😀) Cheers!
Re: helmets. I can get a very strong helmet at a surplus military store that would be cheap and strong and not aerodynamic or aesthetically pleasing. Helmet design is a balancing act.
Just hope that the winner this year will honour the jersey by actually giving it greater visibility in races than the current holder. Hopefully, it will be a genuine racer rather than someone that goes into hiding so much.
MVDP is currently $8.25 at my online betting shop. If I put that 5er on him and he wins, it's a return of 40+/-. The same bet on Pog (1.53) returns 7.5. My money is going on MVDP
Well, it's basically a four way toss up: Pogi, MvdP, Evenepoel, and all the rest lumped in together (provided all non Slovene, Belgian or Dutch riders team up against them). So if t's a bet of Mathieu or not, you have better odds at not, but it's still one of the three safest individual bets you could make for the race.
Fiver on MvdP not winning this sunday is the savest bet ever made... This course has Tadej written all over it. He will break lose in Lap 5 and will be at the finish, cool calm and collected, before any other rider sees the finish line
So i have had insurance, however i started it 8 years ago & it was 6 years ago they contacted to me to say it was now void. This was 4 weeks after being stabbed in London. Curiously i asked why it was void & they said that due to the attack being for a rolex watch i was wearing, i was too much of a target & they would be happy to pay for any bike i may have had stolen they wasnt prepared to cover my health or any injurys i sustain trying to hold onto it. This made me very angry & i then went onto persue them for breaking their contract & i got a resolution.
Pog, Remco and MvDP will be watching each other like hawks at the WC RR, but may not be paying too much attention to the others. Which may create a surprise result, much like Carapaz and Kieshofer at the Tokyo Olympics, especially in the absence of race radios.
Caption competition: Looks like the Italian duo just realized they're Ganna have to share their pizza with the guy in the rainbow jersey, if the have AFFINIty or not!
Don’t count anyone out. I never cheered on sports, whether football, or football or skateboarding or biking or anything. Never sounded fun to me. No recognition sought after, I plan to win the race. I don’t use strava at all and if I did, it wouldn’t be for brownie points. I’m in it for the love of it. Do good
literally just went from 5 weeks on a knee scooter to crutches 3 days ago, I was hit by a car last month on my bike :( I can attest the knee scooter was great, and I hate the crutches.. but I hate not walking more so it's crutch time while recovering and learning to walk again.
Considering that both Pogačar and Evenepoel are there, I would put both of them ahead of van der Poel (yes, that's how you write his surname). I would give Pogačar the edge here considering the steep kicker, assuming he is in form on the day.
If you gave me £5 or £500 to bet either for or against MvdP at World's I think you'd have to be crazy to bet against him. He's only raced 50+ races this season. He's made no secret of going there to win. Will he win? I don't know but I wouldn't bet against him.
thanks for another great show! caption of the week: 'I told you size doesn't matter...' And Si, with the UCI Gravel World Champs coming up soon, are we going to see any training/preparation content on GCN about it? I assume you're taking part since you qualified!
