Vernestra was so surprisingly judgmental toward Elzar Mann at the end of Defy the Storm-a Jedi she believed had wrongly killed someone-that I found her reaction to the situation in the first episode of The Acolyte to be right in character for her. Or at least not outside the scope of how she might react to hearing a seemingly believable report that a former padawan had murdered someone.

Ive been seeing some comments of disappointment regarding Vern being far from what she used to be and so different, not a complete 1:1 transition from book to show. While its understandably frustrating, I think many forget that its intentional and is like what happened with Mando Ahsoka VS TCW/Rebels Ahsoka. Not only has a lot of time passed, but she has undergone massive upheaval as of Defy the Storm, with Temptation of the Force and the next century likely doing more before she becomes what we see in the Acolyte. If they want to bring book Vern to the screen, they can always do so in Young Jedi Adventures. Preferably voiced by Noel Wells (Tendi in Star Trek Lower Decks & Lord Dominator in Wander Over Yonder).

On dogma and political enemies: Being concerned about “political enemies” is not necessarily any different than being concerned about “physical enemies.” That is, they are threats, and it does not mean one is dogmatic for being aware of them. Real world example: The Iranian government, as we all know, if functionally ruled by a fundamentalist faction within Twelver Shi’i Islam. The Sufi Orders that remain in Iran are under constant *political* threat from the government, which can sometimes boil over into violence. The Sufis in Iran being aware of this, and taking steps to do their due diligence to avoid harm is not a sign of dogmatism or corruption. So, in the case of Vernestra being aware of political enemies, and wanting to take steps to avoid giving them ammunition, is not necessarily a sign of dogmatism or corruption. To be sure, the Jedi in this period are not a persecuted minority (yet!), but that doesn’t change the actual existential danger represented by political enemies. Particularly given that the Jedi Order is nearly and primarily completely destroyed *politically* before it is nearly destroyed existentially (the Sith nearly “killed the dream”), Vernestra’s concern is actually rather astute and even prescient.
@karl-niclas_burner
@karl-niclas_burner 3 месяца назад
Vernestra worried about if it became known that a former jedi killer anoter jedi. Its master Sol that speaks about "political enemies", but Vernestra is more into saving face and make an exampel, of the suspect. (The very weak evidence is either weak writing of the show or subtext.)
@jeffmiller6025
@jeffmiller6025 3 месяца назад
@@karl-niclas_burner Fair point. But it doesn’t change the heart of what I mean: Vernestra is responding in a perfectly strategic way to a very real threat. And an eye witness, such as the barkeep (and all of the other folks who could corroborate his story), is not weak evidence. So bringing Osha in is a perfectly reasonable response in context. Vernestra is not saying Osha is for sure guilty, only 1) that there is enough evidence to bring Osha in, and 2) that there is a very real existential threat to the Jedi in the form of political enemies (again, something, as SW fans, we know she is not only correct about, both rather prescient).
@karl-niclas_burner
@karl-niclas_burner 3 месяца назад
@@jeffmiller6025 I got stuck with how she didnt say anything about finding out the truth, but the importance of making an exampel. As for the weakness of one eye withness, I how hard it would be to identify an individual from another species like Mon Calamari or Twi'leks. They all do sorta look alike.
@jeffmiller6025
@jeffmiller6025 3 месяца назад
@@karl-niclas_burner I suspect that if you’ve lived your whole life surrounded by various species of folks, you can probably tell the difference fairly easily. And this is probably doubly true for non-humans identifying humans, given that humans are far and away the most represented species in the galaxy. Besides, there were other humans in the bar when she attacked. So I doubt it would be hard to find corroborating witnesses from various specifies. They just showed the bartender since 1) his evidence was the strongest and 2) he’s easily recognizable to the audience for obvious reasons. And you’re right about what Vernestra didn’t say. And she could be assuming guilt given the heavy strength of the eyewitness(es) account(s). But as the second episode showed, she was also totally fine when even stronger counter-evidence presented itself.

As someone who listened to the audiobooks I love the actress perfomance, she really sounded like Vern. I see some comments complaining about her personality changing a bit and I think that's totally on purpose. The events of THR are supposed to show how the Jedi changed from their golden age to how we see them in the prequels. And this show takes place 100 years after those events, of course Vern is not going to be the same from when she was a teenager. Not only did she grew up but those events changed her and the Jedi as a whole

I feel like a lot of people that don't like the Acolyte aren't high republic fans. I've read the phase one comics and I'm reading light of the jedi, I'm really invested in the show because it feels like the high republic. I think people love to hate star wars nowadays. A lot of it is bad but the high republic is some of the best storytelling we have got in a while.
@Iceskyguy
@Iceskyguy 3 месяца назад
I think this is being WAY too hard on Vernestra and the Jedi in general. The've been presented as very human and understandable in this show, something I'm grateful for. For Vernestra specifically, we haven't seen a lot of her so we don't really have a proper grip on how she has changed over the years but we have seen that she isn't rigid and inflexible. She isn't being dogmatic, she's being realistic. Just because she has expressed some concerns over how it might look to have a former Padawan killing Jedi for the Order, which is a valid concern because the Jedi need people to trust them in order to do their jobs but that doesn't mean her priority isn't also getting real justice for Indara and Torbin and getting to the truth. That's a very black and white lens to look at her with TBH. These are things she has to consider in her new role within the Jedi. She isn't a Knight taking instructions anymore, she has to give them now and look at all the angles. You can't approach those two roles the same way. She's grown up and is now acting accordingly. That's really all there is to her I don't think so far that the Jedi have been presented in a way that is anti institution so to take up that mindset to go into the rest of the show with doesn't seem like a good idea to me

So I'm saying this without having read anything from phase 3 of the High Republic yet. But I get the sense that maybe she went through something similar like Stellan, they were both prodigies and became poster figures of the Jedi Order. And I can see how that pressure overwhelmed them and made them lose a little of that free-thinking nature. And I can also understand that the Jedi are very cautious with this matter, where already two members have been killed and that it is related to some choices they may have made in the past.
