Viktor is without a doubt a machine, no-one comes close at the moment. The mens singles game now needs someone, or preferably a few players, to step up to challenge him consistently. There was a reason the LD-LCW era was so good.

Fun fact: At a young age Viktor cursed himself being so tall wishing he was shorter, since that was the norm back then for all good badminton players, he didn't think he could become one of the best because of his height. Now people are arguing that being so tall is an advantage in many cases in badminton, but that's literally only because of Axelsen. You wouldn't hear that argument 10 years ago.

Chen Long was the first world class tall singles player. I would even argue Viktor mould his game around his court control and LCW’s attack.

Super job! Love you channel. Viktor is committed to being the best. This comes in part from the Danish tradition with respect for badminton athletes and early introduction to the sport. He trains very hard and is very strong so he can do things many players cannot do, especially late in a match. Some Danish players have said they only practice two hours per day, but they mean two hours of high intensity, quality on-court work combined with a lifestyle of cross training, diet, quality sleep and persistent curiosity about the sport. Thanks for highlighting Viktor and his steps to success!

Amazing video. I think the player who are closest to Viktor at the moment are LZJ and Ginting. Still cannot win against Viktor but at least can force to rubber set. Maybe if Ginting can reduce his self-errors, it will be interesting

@BradPB
@BradPB 2 года назад
@@ChyeHeng17 Totally agree, Ginting just doesn't has the stamina for his own playing style. As he gets older, it will only get worse. LZJ while having an amazing attacking game, he struggles when he has to go against players with good defense because his control game is not well developed yet. LZJ beat Viktor at the All England on Mar 2021 which was almost 1.5 years ago, since then they have met twice, LZJ lost both time. So it's not entirely accurate when people put LZJ on the same tier with Viktor, at least not right now.

Viktor is a really intelligent and disciplined athlete no doubt about that! On the part about consistency, in 2018/19 when Kento was at the top of his game, he used the same strategy against Viktor that Viktor is now using to play against him - no unforced errors, opponent has pressure to play winning shots and makes more mistakes. I remember there was a match where the score line was 21 to single digits and Kento was not smashing. If Kento restored his old form, I wonder if the score line would be closer?

Honestly, Axelsen is the best after LD-LCW era because of 2 reasons. #1 He's damn consistent. #2 The rest of the men singles player are just too trash. Trust me, those who grow up watching LD-LCW will never would've thought a India and Thailand player will made it to the Olympics semis. Players like Tommy Sugiarto or Kenichi Tago are easily Gold medal contenders if they were born in this era. No disrespect to Axelsen, he's a great player. But the only player that ever came close to LD-LCW was Momota. Unfortunately a car accident changed everything.
@leenpels7646
@leenpels7646 Месяц назад
So because India and Thailand have improved that's bad? It's more like badminton training and coaching has improved a lot and have gotten more and more widely integrated over last 10-15 years. They are playing better than ever, faster pace, harder smashes, better nutrition. There has been a progression in the sport like there are in many other sports. Momota, among others, felt that in his come back from his accident. He actually played great initially in 2021 at Thomas cup, Denmark Open and Indonesia masters (which he won), but his badminton had been stalling compared to Ginting, LZJ, Axelsen and others who all defeated him having him figured out more or less. Saying Tommy Sugiarto and Kenichi Tago would be gold contenders today just shows how unserious you are. This looks more like a case of your butt hurting because the tall Dane is dominating.
@krs4046
@krs4046 Месяц назад
@@leenpels7646 if the game is so much more integrated than before, then, why don’t we see other national thrive like Argentina, Brazil or even Colombo? 10-15y not enough time for them? The game has not been integrated internationally. If it has, people won’t be earning US$40,000 by winning a big tournament. Even tennis grand slam, first round knockout earn more than that . Social media and RU-vid only makes learning a lot more easier but that doesn’t mean integration . i might be wrong about India. But trust me, players like sonwanho tago sugiarto will be gold contenders in todays game. They are much technical, skilful and fit. Men singles today is about who is fastest or who has the strongest smash. They easily tire out when it comes to game 3. There’s rarely any deception shot, double action or halfsmashes. You can disagree with me, but the stats wont lie. go watch yesterday‘s game and count the shots. I stand firm, viktor it’s a great player, but he’s more lucky that he was born at the right time. If the game is so much more integrated today, why no one comes close to him in todays game ? You just don’t become a great sports nation overnight because of integration. So just admit the fact that the game today is at a very low standard. Btw, momota case after his accident is due to an eye issue and mental challenge. You dont win 13 tournaments a year, get involve in a car accident, comeback after a year and realised ‘oh integration changed and improve everyone’. I agree with you that certain nations are indeed improving. But honestly majority of what you said, just don’t make sense.

While respecting Viktor for all his commitment and achievements, I feel really sad for Kento Momota who has been beating Viktor quite easily until 2020 Jan when he faced the fatal accident. I witnessed myself at Japan at the Japan open the semi betweek Momota and Viktor where Momota beat him quite comfortably. Momota was unbeatable at that time its very unlucky that he met with the accident, and then out of the game for a long time. His return to the game has not been the expected level, but I still hope Momota will be back to his usual form sooner

Peak Lin Dan beats everyone, period. Look at it this way. 2019 Momota would beat current Viktor. Viktor looks so good now because if you’ve removed Momota from the equation since 2016, Viktor would stand out. Momota was the real best player and Viktor was number 2. These two are by far ahead of the rest. But I think prime Lin Dan would beat 2019 Momota. So there you go.

If I go to bed early then I wake up at 2 or 3am way before I need to get up. Sleeping pills are not good for my work life. I do try to avoid alcohol. Yea I’d like to see a video on that too. I remember Li Yongbo once saying that Lin Dan saw things on court that other players did not see. If you could beat a player like Lee Chong Wei almost 30 times throughout your career, you are the GOAT. They also brought in Tang Xianhu to beef up his mental game prior to the Beijing Olympics. This hiring a coach for the mental part of the game is what Japan should be doing with Momota.

Rising of Viktor is also due to the accident faced by kento momota in Malaysia.Viktor had this attacking game and angled smash in previous yrs also but he couldn't beat momota in any stages.After the accident momota's game drastically reduced (it's clear that something happened to momota after the accident).So experienced players either retired or injured to make the path easy for Viktor to top podium.situations are currently in favour to Viktor and it's a perfect time to excel. And i couldn't stop mention this fact of momota's unfitness also helped a lot to Viktor.

This is an extremely ignorant and pathetic post. You're making excuses for Momota because of his accident, which is probably fine, but then you're also massively ignorant to the fact that Viktor Axelsen also was constantly injured from early 2018 to 2020 (during Momotas "prime")... He dropped from number 1 to number 5/6 in that period, and that was far from Momota's doing. It stemmed from an ankle injury from early 2018 that kept lingering on causing all sorts of problems with his back, because of the consequential uneven movement, and most of all his preparation. He also had to withdraw from the 2019 world championship because of this. It was during the covid "break" he got his second and final ankle surgery that finally made him totally injury free from the first time since early 2018... Since then then he has nothing but progressed with his badminton... Momota is however still stale in his 2019 style, which more or less has been figured out by Ginting, LZJ, others, not to forget Viktor Axelsen. The biggest thumbing Viktor Axelsen gave during the previous weeks in Indonesia and Malaysia was against Momota style opponents - Tsuneyama (21-8 21-4) & Momota himself ( 21-4 21-7)

@@leenpels7646 @Leen Pels what this video saying?why Viktor is now the best player in this world...and they are showing his attacks and speed ...these are all there in previous yrs also..So actual reason (In my opinion) is not the points given here in this video but the lack of opponents to his level.And I am not ingnoring anything from Viktor...he is hardworking guy and deserve to be the top now.
@leenpels7646
@leenpels7646 2 года назад
@@BeyondtheFinishLine9 With the exception of the initial first clip, which featured Viktor Axelsen winning the world championship in 2017, all of them are relatively new... And he is indeed much better now than he was back then. It's easy to pick apart the 2 different Axelsens using the headband as a guide. There was the nude forehead Viktor Axelsen, who was worldclass.. Now there is the Headband Viktor Axelsen, who is a certified legend. "The lack of opponents to his level".... is just a clarification to his current dominance.. It also was for Momota.. You don't think the players and coaches of China, Indonesia, Malaysia are studying him like mad trying to find a way to defeat him?

A player's greatness is also defined by the greatness of his rivals. Lin Dan was the greatest as he was on top of another all time great LCW.. Now with Kento Momota out of the picture, there is no one to challenge Victor . Victor was really helpless in front of Momota and literally use to cry. Yes currently he is #1 in ranking. But definitely can't be called the best player of the era. Really love the analysis done by Greg and Jenny..so much to learn from your content.
