I remember watching your videos about 7 years ago you taught me pretty much everything about DJing now I've gone on to make it into my career I just wanted to say thanks 🙂

My brother in law passed this past year. He left behind an original Roland 808 five technics 1200s and about 500 lp’s from old school rap to rock but mostly breakbeats from the mid 90s. vinyl mixing is such a pleasure, I’m old school and have a wall full of vinyl so I get the younger generation not wanting to do it and embrace technology, this is an art though and the whole vinyl process is just so enjoyable 🔥

Just made the switch to vinyl earlier this month. Not even sure why but its almost like an epiphany for me. And yes, Vinyls are expensive for sure. Especially if you're in the states like i am and you're tryna get the dance bangers from the 90s and early 00s from UK or Europe based artist. Them damn GBPs and Euros be adding up quick as hell when it comes to shipping cost. But it feels amazing to finally have tangible music again like we did growing up. I'm diggin it!

Had a set of technics when I was 17 loved them and the buzz of getting new vinyl eventually went to cdjs going with the flow sold everything.. I missed it so much was about to buy a controller but bought a new technics mk7 last instead I’ll save up and buy another and get mixing again Can’t wait .. can’t beat the real thing ❤

I started buying vinyl after listening to DJ Sneak talk about the industry and how records used to be broken and promoted in night clubs on Lenny Fontana's "True House Stories" podcast. IMoreover, I had a long want list of tracks that were 80s/70s/90s produced that were only on Vinyl - in the end my desire to get this tracks pushed me to pick up a turntable. What I discovered was a whole new world which was new and a lot of fun. As a DJ, I never really found a sense of "community" or "meeting place" outside of the nightclub, but visiting a record shop was my first exposure to "DJ community" which was great. You're definitely right that some of the interesting parts of DJ mixes are mistakes or "off-ness", just like how when we produce tracks we try to make them more human by adding swing or offsets to the hats/claps. Vinyl mixing is definitely more challenging, but can be a lot of fun.

Been saying that for years! I need to hear the human element within the mix. I dont mind when the mix isn't picture perfect, or slightly out of sink or what not. When i hear those beautiful inperfections it makes the mix feel alive!

I started with vinyl over 20 years ago, then onto CDJs, then USB, then a fully digital setup... and then full circle back to Vinyl again when the 50th Anniversary 1200s came out, and can honestly say Vinyl is the most fun, and most satisfying. Every man, his dog, his cat and Nanna has a controller and a laptop full of mp3s and it's boring. I've played out in clubs using all formats, and yes vinyl was heavy to carry, and yes now it's more expensive than it used to be, but there's just something about a vinyl record, the sleeve, the art work, the b side, it's fucking great. I would rather watch someone work, sweat and fight for a mix over someone pressing sync and looking cool playing on their phone between mixes. Proud to be part of the few among many. Great video... I've played exclusively with vinyl for almost a decade now and it's just so much fun. But I think ultimately, the technology you use and choose is not important. Great DJs find the perfect mix of expressing their unique taste of music and keeping the dancefloor in motion. If you're able to achieve that with a laptop, great. With vinyl, great. Ah yes, and don't forget that digital dj'ing can provide a low cost way for people with limited budget to start doing something fun. All the power to them!

I’m a vinyl only Dj now, the only issue is the price of vinyl nowadays is silly

With the advent of digital in 2010, I started performing exclusively with Traktor Kontrol x1 and that was interesting. After all those years it became very boring and monotonous. Last year I got back into turntables and buying vinyl. I started to enjoy it again and every unpacking of new records is a unique experience.

I'm on my way to transition to Vinyl. I learned and played digitally all the time for the last decade but here and there touching my turntables on my journey. Now I can't stop myself getting new records in every week and improving so much, that I want to shift more towards it. The time you put into it alone feels so much more connected and selected that it brings me so much joy!

I agree with you on the vinyl oppinion to a point. I have been DJing for over 20 years, playing Trance and started off with turntables and have a very large vinyl collection. In 2007 I purchased a pair of Pioneer CDJ800 mk2's, so my setup now consists of 2 Technics 1210 mk2s and a pair of CDJs, and for many years I was playing both CDs and Vinyl during my sets. However to keep playing new tracks, I was moving away from vinyl, not by choice, just because music wasn't being produced on vinyl anymore, so the vinyl turntables, sometimes, weren't even getting turned on during a set. In recent years the cost of blank CDs have gone up and now can be quite expensive to even burn tracks to play on my CDJs. Upgrading my setup to CDJ-2000s (at least) is very expensive and I don't ever want to purchase the CDJ-3000 as that would mean all the CDs I have, are useless, due to the 3000s not having a cd drive... However in the last year I discovered the Pioneer DJ Interface 2. This has 2 time code vinyl and rekordbox on the laptop to play the music. So i got these and it means I now use my Technics 1210s again and I'm able to play the new tracks using 'vinyl'. However, I don't let rekordbox suggest tracks, or beat match for me. I still DJ using this as I would when playing traditional vinyl. The only time I look at the screen is when im dragging a track to the deck. I know my music inside out, so I know what tracks will mix well together. Therefore, I would say I am still a vinyl DJ, I use my ears and beat match the traditional way. The only thing I can't do is read the vinyl, but as I said, I know my music very well, so know when the breakdowns, drops etc, are in a track. I still buy vinyl, and with the likes of The Thrillseekers, pressing vinyl again, I will always prefer to have my music this way, but the cost effectivness of the timecode vinyl with rekordbox means this will be the better option for me.. I still consider myself a vinyl DJ, and still mix the way I would if I was using a traditional peice of vinyl...

Bought my first set of turntables at age 18 in 2021, never looked back since

I just turned 50 in March. I am a bedroom DJ, just playing at home on a Friday and Saturday nights for my wife and kids with a Numark controller and Serato software. I have an extensive record collection though, 80s 90s Funk, Disco and House. I am now embarking on a musical journey, just starting out mixing records. Bought a used DJM-350 and 2x Audio-Technica AT-LP120X turntables. Loving every moment learning on these. Take care brother, you're the real deal.

As a bedroom dj, digital vinyls just works fine also, I still do alot of mistake with digital vinyls cause I use the laptop only to insert tracks and not using it as a controler ^^ Vinyls will never die, young people admire vinyl and I think it's beautiful

I'm an avid vinyl DJ for a couple of years now. I started it, because it was challenging with a steep learning curve but not an unobtainable skill. I purposefully used DVS to teach myself how to do sets, then transitioned from a controller with one turntable to a mixer with two. I still make mistakes that bother me, but people seem to have a good time, which gives me the confidence and the willingness to go back and try again. The real advantage I see with shopping vinyl in an irl shop is, you will probably find things you've never know existed by digging in crates and chatting with people around the shop. These connections you make and the insight you gather are way more valuable than 'just' finding songs or playlists on Spotify and listening to them by yourself.

I've only recently started out as a DJ. I never really got into controllers, so I've opted for virtual vinyl since a real vinyl setup is way too pricey for a 20 year old like me. A big part of why I'm putting effort and love into learning everything from scratch, without computer aids, is thanks to your channel and how you see the DJ world. I want to say that even though virtual vinyl might not be the real deal for vinyl purists, for many of us, it's the only way to get in and learn like they did back in the day.

Each to their own and you raise very good points. I’m old school vinyl and mixing vinyl is more of a skill, and there will always be a story with every record you put on. COVID did me a favour as I actually got up off my backside and moved all my vinyl out of the loft and now they all sit next to the 1210’s. Long live vinyl !!

💯 I played at parties late 90’s 2000’s all vinyl all by ear 👂 you had to learn/.train your ears. Don’t think digital djs would stand a chance anymore if they had to play records

I love everything about this. Being a vinyl dj for over 20 years, the only advantage I can see at the moment with the digital vinyl os their is alot of good tracks that are not being pressed into vinyl. We need more vinyl pressing companies.

In my residency, I use both. I have a bin of vinyl. But I also use DVS for some of the newer tracks that I can't get on vinyl. So I guess I'm something of a hybrid DJ. The customers love the look of it.

Using vinyl is a feeling its the true roots of djing, I find digital djs play with the tracks too much ( loops, effects ) a vinyl set almost feels true to the artists of the tunes your playing. Ellaskins been viewing you for many years now, keep up the good work

I do not hide. I started, 10 years ago , with a laptop and a controller. Now I proudly ride the pitch on CDJ 900 Nexus (no laptop anymore and with the BPM reader covered). I'll never reach the vinyls stage. My collection is all digital. It would cost a fortune to buy vinyls for all the mp3 I have.

I like the human factor behind the decks. That's all it is about. The human and the music. The vinyl that has been put on the deck actually has it's own story. Starting from the first idea of creating the track to the the moment when it is played for the first time.

I gave up vinyl after returning from residency abroad in 2002, it was a tough decision but I have moved on, while I no longer play out, I appreciate I will never get back the tunes I had collected since the 80’s. It was costing me a fortune to transit tunes with airlines, and was often hit with excess baggage charges. I honestly hand on heart do NOT miss vinyl, yes it was great back in the day playing on the Technics, but if you was a Dj who travelled it was extremely difficult, I remember our club in Tenerife having a CDJ installed in 99, and I couldn’t get my head round it, but it has evolved and developed into something that makes everything so easy for all aspects of Dj’s. Don’t get me wrong I admire when someone plays on vinyl, because it’s an art to mix two tunes together. But like everything in life, things are made easier, simpler and the digital revolution is a good progression.

I totally agree with you! I always considered a "real DJ" uses vinyls only. Even watching a DJ handling vinyls on turntables is way more entertaining than watching a DJ touching buttons. I am 52, I still buy vinyls but the prices are now so high (15€ for a 12" 😅) that I have to restrain myself and hunt on the second hand market. I still have my first records I began to buy when I was 12, and lots of treasure in Funk, Disco, house and Detroit techno from the 90’s until recent rare vinyl only edits. ❤ Love your videos, congrats!! ❤

Brilliant video! So pleased to hear the things you have said. I totally agree. I mix on vinyl only, and after a 20-year break I'm back buying records again, there's so much amazing new music, artists, and labels. As you say it is very expensive but it is also a skill that not many can genuinely claim (again as you said records with a laptop still do half the work for you - beat sync etc). So pure record mixing all the way, whether is a trend or not, I'll be there!

Your absolutely correct about turntabelist being real dj's I spun vinyl back in the late 80 's early 90's and took a long break and have decided to get back into it.I bought a controller and laptop and downloaded all my music from a record pool and I hate it,it just doesn't feel the same so the controller is in the closet and the laptop is for emails I picked up a couple pioneer dj turntables because the 1200's are crazy pricey right now and dusted off my Urei 1603 and have gone back to spinning vinyl as a wedding dj and I'm loving it and so are the clients that book my services. You have a point about vinyl being very expensive but I think you can't beat the sound and the overall experience of a dj doing it old school.Long live vinyl and real dj's.

Recently transitioned from controller to vinyl and I’m loving it. I wish I’d learned to beatmatch by ear to begin with but the learning process will be worth it. It’s so nice not looking at the laptop during sets and digging through the vinyl crate to find the right track brings a new kind of connection to what you’re playing. I’m still using a bit of virtual vinyl until I build up my collection but trying my upmost to ditch the waveforms and learn to read the grooves

Very interesting and valid points. I agree with your angle on this. You really can’t beat the feel, sound and rawness of vinyl. I’m glad I still have turntables and a fair bit of my original vinyl. I DJ weekly on an online station using a Denon controller and it does get a bit boring even though I don’t bother using the beat matching sync mode. I really like the tips you put over about being able to afford to keep adding to a vinyl collection, I think you have reignited my vinyl itch. Thanks for an interesting post.

I have DJ'd for over 25 years originally on a Denon 2000F CD controller in the late 90's then onto Vinyl in the early 2000's. I went back to CD's in the late 2000's due to music availability but struggled and here's why. When I'm DJing and the music is flowing and I'm in the "zone" and I'm looking for the next track to mix the visual clues from the tracks cover art work instantaneously help my mind recognise whether the next track will be a good fit or not. That plus knowing my vinyl collection like the back of my hand. The same cannot be said when I'm DJing with CDJ's, my mind has a hard time recalling what the tune sounds like just looking at a blank CD with my own hand writing on it. Vinyl forever 💪💪💪

Vinyl was great but I do not miss hauling all the hardware and records. When it comes to mixing and doing it live during a party I love when you've prepared all tracks with cue points and loops and it relieves a lot of stress I had doing vinyl constantly cueing and beat matching. Now I can concentrate on song selection and enjoy people dancing more. I can even take a few steps myself on the floor!

I think you're spot on. I DJ with 45's. Old school 70's, 80's, 90,s nights playing all different genres. I'm not a beat matching DJ but I really ought to learn as I also have some great dance 12"s that don't really see the light of day. Has become an expensive hobby but I make every purchase count and luckily have a fairly sizeable collection from back in the day. But definitely with you on the 2 x turntable and mixer front, I don't want anything else, a laptop would take the fun out of it for me.

38 years old. Started D.Jing with my Dad when I was 8 years old, and all we used was vinyl. Had a set of McGregor MD10's. As the years went on we gradually switched over to cd decks, we never went onto laptops. Still miss using the vinyl, you really felt like you were working for your fee...especially when doing a stint of 50's or 60's tunes in your set, most of them on LP's which needed concentration to find the right track point on the record and you had only an average of 2.5 minutes to cue up your next song before your current one ended!

Sold my 1210's afew years ago and just rebought a pair last year. Now rebuilding my vinyl collection and man have records increased in value in 5 or 6 years.

started on vinyl 4 years ago during covid. never djd before, never done any education to do with music. taught myself from listening to other djs on youtube, and at real raves. just looked more fun and intricate than digital, and 100000% more respect from older djs when they see you playing vinyl/ know you play vinyl. thanks to you really, i used your lessons on beatmatching on turntables etc to learn the basics and then went off and created my own style that came naturally to me! never used any lessons etc just 4 years solid of trial and error, i think its paid off. most importantly i just love djing on vinyl, i own dvs but doesnt hit the same spot lol. and yes, people LOVE seeing vinyl being played. even if you're not brilliant, they know how difficult it is. and the respect is there just for trying!

I have been using vynil for at least 30 years and can mix on vynil very well. I use DVS also and produce a much better mix with it. I think when being aided by a laptop, it's important not to be lazy and do a lot more with the kit. Doubling up records, incorporating samples and the odd bit of scratching. A lot of mixes I do on DVS I could not do on vynil. I use Dvs as I already had turntables and a laptop, all I needed was a DVS compatible mixer. Best of both worlds..practice and enjoy.

Long term bedroom dj here since 1992, I had some belt drives and 12'10's as a kid, I played some parties and raves in the mid/late 90's but ended up selling evrything around 2002. The following years I got into mixing on cdj's and various controllers as they became a thing and then around 2020, I had this real bad itch for Vinyl. I bought a shed load of vinyl and some nice decks /mixer (Reloop 8000mk2's and Elite mixer), I had some fun for a few months before realsing I didn't miss it at all, I didn't get anything from it apart from it taking up space, needing to be cleaned. I didn't even get anything from the aesthetic of Vinyl like I did back in the day. It was in a way it was nice to mix without the laptop etc but it all felt a bit clunky to me. I'm now back 100% digital and for the amount of time I actually get to mix these days it suits me. *This is my own personal view from my experience, if I was playing out and had wanted to have Vinyl as my niche I'd prob think differently!

Your song selection has to be on point do to the cost of vinyl , You will become a better observer of quality music , It will force you to be creative not only technically but also musically , Better sound quality on bigger systems..Theses are just a few positives aspects of vinyl.. I love what you do Jonathan. Been following you for at least 16 years. Your videos have been instrumental in helping me to mix and become a better dj. I became a mobile dj and was doing it for about 8 years, (looking to get back into it). I started on some belt driven turntables and moved onto gemini pt2100. I love em, played on 1200 mk2's but could not afford them. I love vinyl and love playing, but cannot be arsed to lug around the gear. The price is also a deterrent. Don't want to end up getting a record pinched or lost. Job lot buying vinyl used to be cheap as hell. I used to love a boot sale as well as Ebay. I would buy whole collections for 40 pounds. Those days are now gone. Digital is the way forward I think.

I encouraged to see you asking the next generation of DJ to go back to vinyl. I am bored of DJ's now and could not care less to go and see them as there is no challenge of skill anymore. I used to have a lot of respect for a DJ as it took time and patience to learn the skill. I love seeing a DJ play records. Makes a massive difference and takes me back. Hearing that mistake is like gold now days. FYI I am not a DJ. I am a live hardware producer. Everyone was being a DJ back in the day, so I thought I would do something different.

Well said m8 ,it's a dying art ,23 years collecting and still buying ,was lucky aswell and got to buy 10000 of tony de vits collection, the politics of djing made me stop ,i used to get booked for bein a good dj then over time I seen people getting booked who were shit and couldn't dj, they just sold 20 tickets to a nite for the promoter and would get a booking ,that was enough for me to walk away from it .

Been thinking about going full into vinyl DJ thanks to a specific record off a mix that eluded me when looking for a download. It opened me up to the world of white label records that have never and probably will never be properly digitized unless you have the know how. From there I got introduced to Razor n Tape and their collection of vinyl only... it's been history since then. I'm looking to grow a collection and follow this solid advice! As you said, everyone has a laptop and CDJs these days, but the novelty of vinyl only sets will always stick out.

I’m back on vinyl after years of cd then mp3. It’s so much better. What you say about the mix that isn’t perfect is spot on. All those channels on here that get millions of plays. It’s just Abelton fades. I luv hearing the dj work the mix.

Had the same 1210s since 1990 & although the lights have gone, still hold perfect time, they are now worth 4x what i paid for them, give me a controller that won’t be out of date in 10 years, you get what you pay for ❤

totally agree, vinyl is way more fun to mix with and exciting for the crowd, also you're always busy with vinyl so it helps prevent the pointless fiddling with the EQ's on the mixer. The only trouble is in my experience the majority of non DJ ravers don't really care and usually have a much shorter attention span these days, if you lose them for even a minute whilst searching for a record or are struggling to mix it in then half the dance floor disappears outside to the smokers, but i would love nothing more than to see vinyl only nights come back to life.

as someone getting into mixing, I think it's important to master both styles. If you are solely a vinyl dj nowadays, 90% of venues/gigs/festivals don't compensate for turntables, and will only have cdjs! but I believe mixing vinyl is truly special and way more fun, also, way easier playing a record than fiddling and downloading mp3 files and organising onto a USB. at the end of the day buying vinyl can be expensive, but your investing in assets and if you know what you're buying they keep their value! also it supports the artist in today where artists don't really get much back now from producing. I have noticed (specifically with my generation lol) with the rise of bedroom dis/people letting software beat match, there are less and less people truly acknowledging the art and appreciating the history and revolution of music... including having records. but with that... just makes the smaller community of people in the scene, who do know djing is actually beat matching by ear and mastering ur tunes, more special!

I also love vinyl, but...... I began as a Hip-Hop DJ in the 1980s as a teenager when vinyl was the only option (Before the age of club DJs using Hip-Hop deejaying techniques for non Hip-Hop sets). Over the years I have had to part with my records and equipment as life happened (college, military, family, etc.). I missed playing my own mixes because I no longer had equipment or records. Years later vinyl DJ friend introduced me to his Serato setup with Technics 1200s. Using his setup I enjoyed mixing again. A few years went by, and I was in the position to purchase new equipment again. I chose not to go the vinyl route because I no longer have a record collection. It would take many years to get all of the vinyl records again, and some of them I just will not be able to find. I decided to go with Rane 12 inch DJ controllers to play my extensive 50,000+ library of mp3 music for DJ mixes. If I started all over again exclusively with vinyl, I wouldn’t be able to play due to missing all the records that I no longer own. I often hear the argument that if you do not use vinyl you are not a real DJ, you’re just a button pusher. But some are real former vinly DJs who have made the transition for different reasons. The reality is that different audiences want different things. Some audiences are audiophile purists who only want to see a DJ perform with vinly, while other audiences are regular people just want to hear good music and have a great time. The music is what's most important to many people, not the method of delivering it to their ears. To each their own I guess. By the way, great video. Thanks for sharing!

Vinyl is definitely back. The last few gigs we‘ve been to have been full of vinyl DJs and it‘s great to see!

Learnt to mix on vinyl 2 decades ago. Haven't had a mix in years using it. There is such a deep sensual connection as its real, its alive. You've got to use your ears and be gentle making adjustments. You're right about modern DJs that have never played before using it. They'd shit a brick. I live in a van, so turntables are impractal for me personally, so nowdays a controller suffices.

My personal opinion for what it's worth: I'm not against technology or any new innovation and understand that one can carry much more music with audio files on a hard drive, plus you're less likely to put your back out. In the house I have Vinyl, Cd's and Audio Files but when out I prefer listening to a vinyl set especially when listening to choons that are quite difficult to beatmatch, where I feel that the tension created during the mix as the DJ has to work really hard to stop it from going out of sync, especially when they get it right just by the skin of their teeth, to use an old expression, is the best feeling. You don't know if they are going to screw it up or slot it in nicely and the tension created makes it really euphoric. Tension in music is essential.

I have great respect for you in being an original vinyl DJ but I could add one thing about the DVS method is you can switch from usb back to phono with the channel selecter during a mix, which I'm sure your aware of, this option opens the doors to the best of both worlds allowing looping, sampling as well as old school records thrown in the mix. I always think of Jimi Hendrix when they offered him any new equipment foot pedals etc he would use them if he liked them he may of been the first to use the new effect to the generation of music. So what Im saying is it's good to go with the new as it evolves our approach and puts energy into other areas in the mix. Big respect to you though. 🙏

Very good talk I agree with you totally I used to be a DJ used a lot of vinyl then moved into nightclubs from raves and used a mixture of CDs and vinyl I wouldn't want to go near laptop DJing

I had the old school twin turntable with built in amp & belt drive could not do beat mixing on it as no pitch control but awesome machine anyway. Also had the old school 'disco' lights as well. But sadly got rid of them for the new fangled digital stuff. Still got 2 crates of vinyl, just not all the old stuff I did weddings etc with. But I can see what he says, there will be an exclusive market for old school
