On June 24, 2023, the Wagner Group initiated and terminated one of the fastest mutinies in recent memory. Why did it start and finish so abruptly? A couple of new intelligence reports generate some critical insights. Russian intelligence had uncovered the plot, forcing Wagner to accelerate its timeline. After failing to accomplish its initial step, Wagner leader Yevegeny Prigozhin may have panicked. Lacking contingency plans, a convoy set out toward Moscow. Soon thereafter, Prigozhin realized he was in a delicate position and opted to retreat.
This video goes into the details of the leadup and execution of the plot, analyzes some of the intelligence reports' implications, and speculates on a deeper counterintelligence plot.

You should pay a clear difference: Wagner rebelled with the aim of toppling Russia's main war generals. And while Prigozhin harboured ambitions to become the next Russian Tsar, Prigozhin is not a friend of Ukraine. Basically, I have long felt that it was about Putin vs Putin 2.0.
@theplumbum82
@theplumbum82 11 месяцев назад
I don't think so, Prigozhin's Wagner has a serious Nazi problem and outright Nazis would perhaps be the only option worse than Putin.
@cxzact9204

Prigozhyn is not a friend to Ukraine, but he may have destabilized the situation just enough to create a drop in front line morale for russian soldiers. The mutiny ending in a resounding nothing burger will have had at least a marginal effect on soldiers' outlooks, and every marginal gain means something in a war like this.
@ejtattersall156
@ejtattersall156 11 месяцев назад
He is no friend of Ukraine, BUT, unlike Putin, his personal honor is not staked on it. We did hear Prigozhin say that the war was based on a false premise which gives him an out. It is also true that both setting up a new regime and pressing the war is a heavy lift, one Prigozhin may not have been able to do. So Prigozhin in Moscow by default might be a better alternative.

There is still some key piece of the puzzle we don't know. Prigozhin, even post "March for Justice", seems to be moving freely to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Belarus. Wagner's troops seem to be free to move to Belarus, strengthening Lukashenko's hand in a way that Putin can't be happy with. I don't think this is all happening because Putin promised something; he is quite capable of breaking his promises, with the least provocation and incentive (and Prigozhin surely knows this). Prigozhin still has some reliable, ironclad guarantee of Putin's upholding his end of whatever deal was made, and we don't know what it is.

See Wagner/Surovikin business in Syria, CAR, South Sudan and Kongo - gold, potassium, silver, cadmium, oil, gas and other resources from there. The Russian journalists went to CAR to investigate if Wagner belongs to Prigozhin and what the hell they are doing in Africa. These three journalists were cold murdered, Putin knew it all. Also look up for Navalny's team investigation about Surovikin's personal business in Syria.

I personally believe Gerasimov was aboard the Ilyushin-22M airborne command aircraft. He hasn't been seen or heard from since the shootdown. Perhaps Surovikin was arrested because it was a SAM battery, or interceptor under his command who performed the shootdown. Possibly under direct orders from him? Until the Russians produce 'proof of life' in regards to Gerasimov, I think this theory makes the most sense. His HQ was captured, and he instead was calling the shots from an airborne command center.

If Prigozhin was indeed pocketing ammunition for the mutiny, that was a smart way to go about it since he could drum up some popular support by framing it as persecution of his group. In turn, it gave him another reason to leave the frontlines, thus having more people for his abortive wild ride to Moscow. On the other hand, there may well have been a deliberate withholding of ammo and Prigozhin over-rationed his ammo in order to hold it in reserve for his plot. I don't think the extra casualties bothered him deep down as long as his plan could move forward.
@oohhboy-funhouse
@oohhboy-funhouse 11 месяцев назад
Prigozhin absolutely had a stockpile with no need for complicated reasons you outlined. As a warlord, you will stockpile ammo for contingencies, no harm in having options. You might not have any designs for hostile promotions, but in such an environment you always have a target on your back. Russia is a Mafia with a country, not a country with a Mafia.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 11 месяцев назад
I don't think it mattered? First thing they did in Rostov is raid the ammo depots and gain control of the airfield so they could redirect more ammo and for protection. Nobody stopped them and supply problem solved. There isn't really anybody to fight them in Rostov and they knew that. If their plan leaked they should have known the Generals that they wanted to introduce to the sledgehammer wouldn't be there, so it was probably just captured for gravitas and supplies. You can extend this logic. They coldn't fight a full on army anyway but they would't need much ammo to just gain respect and show they mean business. In turn to storm Moscow or something they'd need some actual army to defect to them and they'd redirect their ammo supplies alongside, plus just capture depots, so it wouldn't matter if they have enough up front.
@JoshSweetvale
@JoshSweetvale 11 месяцев назад
Shoigu: "Dude, I gave you 10.000 cases of ammo!" Prigozin: "Stop lying, you gave us 5000 cases!" Shoigu: "I hand-picked the guys doing the delivery. Nobody nibbled during transit. _We gave you 10.000 cases."_ Prigozin: "Putin, I am swearing to you, Shoigu gave me 5000 cases, not one more." Putin: "M-hmmm..." Shoigu: "But-!" Putin: "Stop! Both of you, shut up. Check your supply trains - again - and get _receipts._ Right now I believe neither of you; the problem is somewhere in the middle. Now fuck off." Some time later: Prigozin: "Hehehehe... more ammo for the _party."_

It's just speculation but I think I may know or have a plausible explanation for why Surovikin is the mole for Wagner and attacked Wagner: Surovikin wanted to back out of the coup when it was discovered by the FSB. Now, it's not clear whether Surovikin was playing both sides against each other in some mad juggling gone wrong or whether there is another possible mole for the M.O.D in Wagner, but it seems to me that whatever that initial situation was Surovikin decided to back out of the mutiny once the FSB and M.O.D had discovered it. He probably tried to convince Prigozhin that it was over and the plan was doomed without the element of surprise, and to save his own life he should run- but Prigozhin figured (probably correctly) that if he didn't get some sort of guarantee he would (and still could) be hunted down. That would explain why Surovikin's troops are the ones that went on the warpath to stop Wagner- the lady doth looked to protest too much against Wagner to shout loudly and proudly his loyalty to Putin and the M.O.D (his video in that bunker with the rifle) to try as hard as possible to steer attention away from himself as the possible mole for Wagner. He knew that when it was discovered by the M.O.D that Prigozhin knew they discovered the mutiny that his treason could be exposed, so its likely he was privately begging and then threatening Prigozhin to turn around and go home, possibly even believing that if he killed Prigozhin and took control of the situation he could steer suspicion away from him permanently or perhaps be the first on the scene to destroy any evidence on the convoy that could prove his link to Wagner.
@oohhboy-funhouse
@oohhboy-funhouse 11 месяцев назад
Surovikin statement had the vide of a hostage video. He appeared to be in a bunker and was armed. A General has no business being armed unless things are dire and someone with hostile intent is eminent. No matter which side he was, he knew he was screwed.

The channel has been going for a long time before the war. The war wasn’t even a pivot in topics, he was doing current events and such, though it’s definitely gotten less technical and more streamlined. I can’t remember the last time we saw a table of actions and utility scores, or a decision tree. I’m not sure about popularity increase and can’t comment on that. If you like the channel right now, there’s 30+ videos before the Ukraine war but after the lecture style content. Of them, most are puzzles, but about 6 or so analyzing current events or real situations. My memory is a bit fuzzy so I’m not sure on exact numbers, but I remember e.g. the Zillow, email scam, and soccer tournament videos being analysis, not puzzles.

I think there is a part missing here. Last summer when Surovikin took over in Ukraine, he immediately became 'chummy' with both Pregozhin and Kadyrov. Don't forget, these three took to twitter and Telegram to lambast the MoD and pat each others backs about making advances compared to regular Army units. I distinctly recall one of the two outsiders (Pregozhin or Kadyrov) exclaiming they could run the war effort better and along with the 'Butcher of Aleppo' (Surovikin), knew how to brutalize their way to an RFA victory. I remember thinking at the time that these three were pushing the limits insinuating they could run things better; unheard of talk in a military hierarchy. It seemed pretty obvious to me what they were alluding to. Shortly thereafter in quick succession, Surovikin was demoted, Wagner took a break (before volunteering for Bahkmut), while Kadyrov took his unit home. I'm not clear on why Kadyrov came back and why he was on the road to Rostov; I know what he's claimed publicly, but his unit is still not on the front line so why did he come back in the first place. He was rather quick to move on Rostov, without being told. Lots of open ends still.

I feel like initially Prigozhin's goals was to do something about Shoigu and Gerasimov but he didn't expect that it would go so easy without any resistance and it turned out to be a mutiny. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@ronald3836
@ronald3836 11 месяцев назад
It does not make sense that Prigozhin would think that Putin would let himself be ordered by Prigozhin to sack the people around him. In my reading, Prigozhin avoided mentioning "Putin" only for tactical reasons.

@@ronald3836 It would make sense if Prigozhin thought Putin realized the war in Ukraine was doomed. This mutiny gives Putin an out, but it appears Putin is going to double down with an even weaker Russian Army.
@ronald3836
@ronald3836 11 месяцев назад
@@Edax_Royeaux there is no indication whatsoever that this was meant to give Putin a way out (and that theory is very different from "Prigozhin only wanted to remove Shoigu and Gerasimov").

Replying to someone else, I realized that you don’t put stuff like decision trees or utility tables anymore, even though you sometimes describe them with words. Is that just a production limitation due to increased upload pace? Or did you find that was affecting your viewership, and intentionally remove it?

Not sure that I believe that Moscow was the backup plan. According to what I saw on Twitter as things were unfolding there were two Wagner columns from the beginning, one head to Rostov-on-Don and one headed to Moscow, even while the first column was securing Rostov. Furthermore, the Moscow column had tanks loaded on trucks with fuel canisters. While the Rostov column was mostly tanks on the ground bulldozing past border checkpoints. They had the logistics to march to Moscow prepared in advance. I do believe the coup occurred earlier than planned after the MoD fired on Wagner, possibly because they found out what was happening or predicted it based on Prigohzin’s rhetoric which maybe meant they weren’t ready to take Moscow and didn’t get to capture Shoigu and the other guy. Prighozin himself said June 30th was the plan date. I saw speculation that the march to Moscow was supposed to take place on Scarlet Sails Day when Putin and Medvedev were going to be in St. Petersburg, either so they would be out of the capital, or there was a plan to capture them in St. Petersburg that never occurred.

I like that you represent Prigozhin in the uniform of his culinary company. 4:35 Prigozhin: Salt yours? SALT MINE. 5:30 OMG WHAT WHY IS THIS SO PERFECT! 4:45 Stop. Sledgehammertime! (keywords: Wagner, Nuzhin, sledgehammer, EU, violin-case) May i relay a little bit of an observation made by i think colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon at The Telegraph. Shortly after mutiny announcement videos by Prigozhin, there was a public video message by Surovikin, urging Prigozhin to stand down, published barely within hours. So this journalist notes that some things are highly unusual about it, for one Surovikin doesn't appear to behave quite right, also he's unshaven which never happens, and most damningly he's not wearing his shoulder rank insignia, while being in uniform. He concludes that by that point early on in the coup, Surovikin was likely already arrested and stripped of rank, and the video message may have not been entirely voluntary. In a voice message to the world after the mutiny, Prigozhin said they actually split up right up front. He headed a group that captured Rostov on Don; while Utkin headed the Moscow storm path. There has been a video message today as well. I think he would be wise not to let us know his location, but he isn't what one would call missing.

Prigozhin was easy to spot in this one as you showed him twice and him being quite close to middle of the screen was triggering my peripheral vision sense from the contrast of his outfit against the background- I was able to spot him even though I was mostly only half looking at that screen for most of the video
