Why was Cato favourite to win the Games? 

Hi friends! A quick reminder not to post spoilers for "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes". The book isn't out in many countries yet, and won't be for another few weeks, so it's incredibly inconsiderate. Also, many of you have been asking when I'll make videos about it. I won't be making videos about it until the movie adaptation is released, as this firstly gives everyone time to buy and read the book, and secondly will allow us to use the secondary canon that is a movie to base ideas off of. Cato definitely killed thresh, we know that they watched the games highlights after Katniss wins, so she knows how thresh dies, then in mockingjay, Katniss tells one of the district 2 loyalists, that that’s why she killed Cato, and that Cato killed thresh, and that thresh kills clove,

I think that despite seeming cold and uncaring, Cato struggled with killing. Internally he knows that it's the only way to have a future, which is why he volunteered but he doesn't really want that future. He realizes how screwed up it really is while in the games. I think he was favored based on his looks because Snow wanted to use him like Finnick and probably realized how vulnerable he actually was.

I was really hoping that in the movie, they would have shown Clove's and Cato's reaction to the news that there could be two victors from the same district. Especially with the movie showing more outside of Katniss's point-of-view, it would have been an interesting touch to see the two of them drawing their weapons when the announcement started and the look on their faces when they realised they are in the best position to win.

I would have bet on Clove because like Catnip(Katniss)said she never misses and even though she's very young she's was still able to get the same score as Cato and was the only Carrer that managed to almost kill Catnip twice and SURVIVED!!

If I was in their world I’d DEFINITELY bet on thresh , he was very strong and determined and went by his own rules. And clove cause she was bold and never missed a target. She could’ve won if she would’ve just kept her mouth shut and not be arrogant about her friend killing rue

I’d vote on clove due to her aim and agility and thresh due to how he managed to gain weight and was strong.

i feel like cato’s bark is worse than his bite, and just wants to intimidate so they’re scared of him and are less likely to fight back.

I would have bet on Clove and Foxface for their skill and resourcefulness respectively

I would have routed on Clove, Katniss, and Rue. I would rout for Clove because she is good with handling knifes. She also never misses her target! I would rout for Katniss because she can use a bow, she can climb, and she is pretty smart. I would rout for Rue because she is a really good climber, she can go from tree to tree, and she's pretty smart.

I would've been betting on Glimmer, Clove and Foxface Glimmer is a career tribute and if that tracker jacker hive wasn't dropped on her she might have gotten a REALLY good chance on winning Clove is also a career tribute and she's very skilled with her throwing knives. if she was able to arrive at the cornucopia first and stacked up on knives she'll be a force to be reckoned with Fox face is INCREDIBLY smart. She was able to get by all the traps and during the training period she excelled in differentiating poisonous and non poisonous berries so its very strange that she died on nightlock...

I was watching this with my friend and this is what she said "Cato is the strongest one, Clove is the tiny one, Glimmer is the flirty one, and Marvel is the hot one."

I would've bet on Thresh seeing as he was so darn big. But, then again, if I'd known that there were to be two sequels both starring Katniss, my money would've been on her. :)

I would still vote Cato since he killed 5 people in the kill count he makes the rest of the careers do his bidding which leads to them dying because Cato is the leader of the careers and would kill peeta in the finals unless he would have bled out hiding as a rock. Cato Would Obviously wins

I would put my money on Thresh because during the feast Katniss said that he looked like he had gained weight. Also I would put some money on Katniss because during just the opening day you see that she can set snares, run fast and climb trees. That’s just my opinion feel free to dispute anything

I think I've figured out why Cato's odds were 3:1. I think it was foreshadowing that he would make it to the top 3, but die.

I know this is weird, but I kinda really like Cato, Glimmer, Marvel and Clove. I don't know why. I just really like them, even though Marvel killed Rue... And I totally shipp Marvel and Glimmer and Cato and Clove 😍😍😍😍❤️

I would go for clove cuz i believe shes stronger than all the careers since she volunteered earlier than usual careers and as you said in a other video clove can easily run away from anyone with a close range weapon and throw her knifes at her enemy

I believe that Clove wasnt the favorite simply because rather than assuming she finished her training early, perhaps others saw it as a girl who overestimated herself. I believe the obvious, yes she was fantastic with knives but she was quite small and very young, I would have guess that she was overconfident and volunteered rather than actually have finished her training.

Cato is an amazing tribute

Can someone tell me why the female from district 8 (girl who died at the campfire) odds were 4 to 1? Higher than Katniss, Thresh, Clove, Glimmer, Marvel, Peeta, Foxface she was 13... and she lasted 8 hours. She was smart enough to start a fire but unable to realise the consequences. And the Male from 8’s odds were 3-1, tied with Cato and in the films he was the first dead and lasted 9 seconds. Maybe he was targeted by careers for having such high odds but he should’ve lasted longer. Maybe his injury from training affected his performance but cmon 3-1...

it’s very obvious that cato killed thresh, because clove called for cato so as soon as thresh left cato would be arriving. plus cato and clove cared for each other and cato was kinda a raging killer so he probably would’ve killed thresh for revenge.

I wish we could have gotten more of a backstory on thresh during the hunger games

I love how interesting your videos are! Most people's videos on books are theories, but yours are more scenarios. Also, most theory videos I watch are loaded with spoilers, like they expect you to finish the series before watching the video, but yours only talk about that one book, with no mention of the others. I think Cato was a favorite because he was so intimidating and probably had tons of sponsors, considering his deleted scene of his interview. He was such a large and brutal fighter, but not only that, he was a Career and was welled trained. I don't think Cato was injured terribly (never mind the stings that come later) so he had the upper hand to many injured already. Cato was very good at killing and nothing stopped him from snapping tons of necks and slitting people. He just had the best chance because his district is liked, he has sponsors, he is a Career, and he is a ruthless killing machine. However, his death was the most terrifying and horrible. Can you imagine being mauled by dogs for hours?

I loved cato. He could throw a spear as far as Katniss can shoot an arrow.

It’s the same pheelospy as in survivor. The more kills you get, move blood on your hands meaning more chance of having revenge kill. That’s what happened to clove and marvel

i would run to the forest. I would hide in the hollow of a tree, and cover it in vines or leaves. I would then get to rocks and make a sharp point, that tapers slowly. I would tie it to a branch to make a spear. thats how i would hunt. i would then eat as much as possible to gain strength. i would hide until day then go find my district partner.we would fight others then attempt to win. thats how i would attempt to survive in the hunger games.

I know that cato also killed a tribute called Jason and i Think he was from district 6 and he also killed another tribute from district 4 i Think, anyways the video was good but maybe find out a little bit more Next time😃

His weaknesses in the actual arena they wouldn’t know those things beforehand . Going into it all we know is Cato is skilled in hand to hand combat, a wider variety of weapons, and is larger than the others. This naturally will give him better odds as you don’t know what the arena will have / be like. The guy with a wider range of abilities has better odds than one dimensional tributes. Once they enter the arena and we see we could adjust our stances

I would've bet on a Thresh. Honestly, he easily survived the cornucopia/bloodbath and if Clove didn't yell out to Cato, Cato wouldn't have known Thresh killed her. Cato then wouldn't have gone to kill Thresh. Also Katniss could easily shoot Cato like she did the Marvel. This would mean that Thresh, Peeta, and Katniss were left. At the finale (if Thresh did receive full body armor or a shield in his pack from the feast.) He could easily have taken out Katniss and Peeta leaving him the victor.

So, this is completely hypothetical. But it did cross my mind. Since it’s never disclosed what each tribute does to impress the Gamemakers, the only ones to know what goes down in that 15 minutes is the Gamemakers and the tribute. So what if, at some point, a tribute gets a freakishly high score because they stripped for the Gamemakers?

I do think Clove was the most lethal tribute of the 74th annual Hunger Games. If the feast wasn't at the cornucopia, i do think she would probably have won the games. She was really good at throwing knifes and never missed her target. I really wonder why she didn't threw a knife at Katniss when she was trapped in the tree surrounded by the career pack. I think that Katniss would have died if Clove just threw a knife at her in the tree.

i would root for rue even though i know it would be unlikely to win, i would still do it. seeing someone so small and so capable (her running, climbing, etc) would give me hope that she might win.

I'd vote for Foxface or Clove because Foxface is very smart and could probably survive a long time without fighting, and Clove because she's so good with knives and she's the only one who hasn't been killed by Katniss.

I think Clove was the dangerous one, since she was powerful, though not as big as Cato, but she was also smart, though not as smart as Foxface. However, I don’t think that Cato was truly evil. He was just another one of the Capitol’s playthings, and he was raised and trained for this. He could have been a very good person, had the games not existed. Honestly, he is one of my favorites.

My favorite is foxface. I’ve always wanted to be like foxface. Intelligent, agile, stealthy, very informed about passively surviving in the wild. I admired her, and was sad that she killed herself. She also seemed nice from the 2 seconds of panicked, wide eyed bumping into katniss scene

Wait they all volunteered? So the people who actually got picked didn’t want to go in? Also why would they volunteer when they know only 1 person can come out on top?

I think it's because it's a reality TV show. Years ago, I used to watch Big Brother in the UK. I stopped watching after the first 4 seasons because I thought the show was somewhat rigged. It always seemed like the producers had their own favourites and the presenters were always going on about how they were the favourites to win even if those people were unpopular with the public and on the forums. It was like the producers just wanted drama, and fights and all the bookies and newspapers gave certain houseguests the best odds if they were the prettiest, or the most argumentative etc. So maybe the Hunger Games is the same. The Gamemakers probably want someone from District 1 or 2 to win as they will make the best representatives for the games as mentors in years to come. So those tributes get good scores, the best odds and probably more sponsors. Also the Capitol citizens would be more likely to root for pretty popular people like Glimmer than someone like Katniss, Rue or Foxface. That's why Snow wasn't happy that Katniss was given a score of 11. Also Snow was unhappy that the Gamemakers decided to make the public root for Katniss and Peeta. Snow knew right away that they would not make good Victors from his perspective.

I think the odds are based on survival as well as lethality. My guess is that Cato is more of an all rounder than any of the other careers. As for his score being so much higher than Katniss’s, my guess is that the odds also include historical data and district 2 has the highest win rate compared to 12. All the career tributes probably have higher betting odds due to the district they come from.

Odds are set for something prior to the start of an event. So the biggest, best looking guy with a really good score (and probably a scary bloodthirsty interview) would be the favorite the start the games. Especially since he is a favorite district of the capital. P and Kat are going to have bad odds because they are an outlier district. It doesn’t matter how good they look or do with scores, they generally don’t win. Even if odds are reset at points along the way (final 8, final 4 etc) we know the capital will edit the games to make people look good or bad-so the audience may have thought Kato was doing better then we know he was.

Personally I think Cato realistically would have been the most likely to receive the best betting odds from the capitol bookmakers. Firstly I think the odds were made either before or very close to the start of the games so the events within the games won’t have influenced the odds created. On top of this, while all three of these tributes showed skill with their chosen weapons, physically Cato was the strongest and largest of the three giving him a huge advantage over marvel and clove in unarmed and close quarter combat which will have influenced the bookmakers. I think this is shown in the final battle between Cato Peter and Katniss where Cato manages to over power both katniss and Peter at the same time which I think the other two tributes would be unable to do (if they were both unarmed like Cato).

If I were the Capitol betting type I'd be going with Clove. Like you said in the video, her age and the fact that she still volunteered and got a high training score would've made her my choice.

The only problem with confirmed kills is that by that logic glimmer would have 0 kills witch is rare for a career.

Although glimmers odds were low, I generally would have bet on her. I can see many aspects of glimmer in Cashmere (75th hunger games district 1 tribute), Cashmere, Gloss and glimmer were all extremely manipulative and people smart in general, glimmer exampled by how she managed to get the bow even though she wasn’t the best with it and manipulated her principal to let her into the games, cashmere and gloss exampled by how they tried to bribe the capitol by saying how “you are are family” in the tribute interview, also they probably manipulated Caesar, Plutarch or someone else in power as they did the interview together rather than everyone else’s who did there’s apart. I see her more like cashmere however because one, they are both female with kind of similar height’s and you can tell the capitol finds both glimmer and cashmere se*ually desirable, glimmer displayed by Caesar in her tribute interview and cashmere displayed by how she was probably forced to be a pr*stitute like finnick. Yes I do believe glosses win to have helped her I think Cashmere was strong on her own, and glimmer and cashmere were very similar in my opinion! By the way I know I’m a year late, I just wanted to make my point, I really love your videos!

I feel that Glimmer and Cato where the more charismatics of the careers. Clove is too obviously into violence and Marvel is too shallow to win the public… But Cato had the charisma and the physical strength and abilities (that Glimmer lacked). He was a ten because he could win and be loved as a victor, play the capital’s golden boy. Clove was a ten because keeping her alive (with sponsorship) would keep the show interesting.

Honestly, I think that if Katniss either wasn’t in the games or she waited another year to volunteer, Clove would’ve won. She only died because she was about to kill Katniss, and Thresh overheard her talking about Rue, and killed her. If Katniss wasn’t there, Clove would’ve just gotten her things at the feast and either killed more people or left. If the same thing happened with Foxface and the berries, there would only be Clove, Thresh, and Cato left. Thresh might die like he did in the book, and it would be down to Clove and Cato. At that point, she definitely would have won. And if she has waited a year to volunteer, she would have even more experience and possibly weaker opponents. If she had still teamed up with the other careers, they would probably kill the other tributes, and Clove would’ve been able to kill the remaining careers. Sorry it’s such a long explanation, but this is just my view!

It is really difficult to route on a tribute of the hunger games cause we actually don't know anything about the rest of the tributes. Like we don't know anything about girl from 7 or boy from 8. Maybe If I knew something about them I would route on one of them. But about it the careers I would obviously route for clove and marvel.

I’d sponsor Thresh. Maybe an extra Gift would have helped him beat the mutts or Cato, whoever killed him. However, in the movie, we do hear mutts growling, somebody screaming, and then Thresh picture in the sky.

The odds are often influenced by how much money is placed in the bets. Occasionally this means an overhyped player/team will have odds that are better than those who actually have a higher probability of winning.

Sure he got less kills but cato was definitely the strongest career. Lots of stuff in the novel's described Cato as being the strongest enemy in the games. He killed thresh second strongest tribute for his raw size and strength and was clearly written to be the final opponent for Katniss and Peeta.

Marvel was the smartest out of the tributes he was the only one who thought of setting a trap ( trapping rue) probably learned it from his dad who was a hunter (deleted interview scene) he was also the one who saw katnniss first in the river and saw the fires before everyone else .

i think clove is the exact type of tribute that would double-cross her allies and kill them while they were asleep, i reckon she would have had a real chance of winning if it weren't for thresh, but then again I think that Thresh, Foxface and Cato as well as Clove could have had quite similar chances of winning the games if Katniss didn't volunteer.
